EU Directives for Locomotive Switching and Communications Systems
Does anyone know what Directives would apply the electronic switching control systems and communications systems used in railway systems. some of this equipment would be installed on the locomotive, some in a control center some in train stations. I would thin the LVD and EMC directives would apply or is there a directive specific to this type of equipment. Any communications systems that use the airways or PSTN would fall under the R&TTE, but is there anything if the communications is via the rails. Thanks! Re: strange symbols (to me anyway)
On defense of the use of symbols: I haven't read every posting on this thread, but as I understand it, for the indoor use symbol, even the original poster has since stated that he was pretty sure what it meant. It seemed to me that his original question was mainly focussed on where it came from; i.e. he just wanted to confirm that it "officially" means no more and no less than what it seems to mean. Personally, IF/when a warning is required at all (separate issue!) I would much prefer a symbol than some small print in a language that I can't read. (And remember that even in developed areas including USA and EU, the functional literacy rate is significantly less than 100%.) best regards, glyn TUV Rheinland of North America, Inc. Re: strange symbols (to me anyway)
John, I have no objection to the house and arrow symbol meaning "indoor use only" being made an official 417 symbol, but I can forsee no use for it. I would not want to disturb the IP scheme already in place using the IEC 60529 for Ingress Protection (IP). No marking is already established as meaning inadequate IP. There will be no improvement in understanding between the symbol and the IP marking because the use of one excludes the use of the other - or am I missing something? I am essentially satisfied - remembering that my experience is almost all limited to ITE and electronic sub-assemblies where someone following me is concerned with the enclosure. I am also in agreement with Rich Nute's earlier comment, "So, it would seem to me that outdoor products should be identified; if not specifically identified for outdoor use, then the product is for indoor use." European voltages and apology
I thought I had taught my employers email to recognize postings from the forum and NOT send automatic replies in my absence on vacation. It seems not to have worked, my apologies to the board. The European voltage thing reminds me of the joke in Monty Python Life Of Brian, the Peoples Front of Judea (not to be confused with the Judean Peoples Front, who are splitters) are debating: What have the Romans ever done for us? Well, there's roads, laws, water supplies, medicineYeah but apart from roads, laws water supply, medicine, what have the Romans ever done for us? Well what has the EU ever done for us? Single currency, single voltage (at least for domestic consumers), England joined to France ;-) Without these changes the countries of Europe would have been left far behind in the global economy. With them Europe has a fighting chance in competition with USA, Japan, S America, China etc. A Happy New Year to all the board. Re: EN 60601-1-2/ EN 55022: 1998
David, EN 60601-1-2:2001 (i.e. IEC 60601-1-2) was published in the Official Journal Dec 13, 2002 with reference to the MDD, i.e. it is now officially harmonized. The date of cessation of presumption of conformity by applying the superseded standard EN 60601-1-2:1993 has been set to 2004-11-01 (Nov. 1, 2004). Regards, Brent DeWitt Datex-Ohmeda Louisville, CO ITL-EMC User Group @majordomo.ieee.org on 04-01-2003 10:46:59 PM Please respond to ITL-EMC User Group Sent by: owner-emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org To: "Emc-Pstc Group (E-mail)" cc: Subject: EN 60601-1-2/ EN 55022: 1998 Dear All, I have read in various places that the new edition of IEC/EN 60601-1-2 is in effect (FDA in the US). As yet, only EN 60601-1-2: 1993 is listed in the OJ (December 2002). Does anyone know when the new edition will be listed in the OJ and thus become official? Regarding EN 55022: 1998 + Amendment A1: 2000, I have also read that the application of this standard is being delayed. Does anyone have any information as to when it will become applicable? Re: EUROPEAN VOLTAGE HARMONISATION
In message "Gordon,Ian" writes: > All > Does anybody know what the planned European Voltage Harmonisation levels are > (I think there is a change in tolerance) and when they will be introduced? > Thanks > Ian Gordon Ian, I reproduce below the section on this from the old s.e.e.c FAQ. Recently it has been announced that the final step due 1.1.2003 has been delayed, I'm not sure till when, possibly permanently. Additionally, from a safety point of view, the (UK) IEE made a recommendation in 1996 that "All equipment designed for pan European distribution and for use after 2003 must be tested for safety over the range 230V +10% to -14% even though it may not be necessary for the equipment to work satisfactorily over this range." The "low end" of -14% was to allow for building voltage drops up to 4% in addition to the supply variations. Hope this helps. Bill -- Bill Lyons - b...@lyons.demon.co.uk / w.ly...@ieee.org 2.2.1 European Voltage Harmonisation ~~ The nominal European voltage is now 230V 50 Hz (formerly 240V in UK, 220V in the rest of Europe) but this does not mean there has been a real change in the supply. Instead, the new "harmonised voltage limits" in Europe are now: 230V -10% +6% (i.e. 207.0 - 243.8V) in most of Europe (the former 220V nominal countries), and 230V -6% +10% (i.e. 216.2 - 253.0V) in UK (former 240V nominal). This is really a fudge and means there is no real change of supply voltage, only a change in the "label", with no incentive for electricity supply companies to actually change the supply voltage. To cope with both sets of limits an equipment will therefore need to cover 230V +/-10% i.e. 207-253V. This will actually become the official limit for the whole of the EU in 2003.
