I doubt my employer knows what the IEEE EMC Society is, let alone ‘cares’ about
it. I find employers are more concerned with membership to internal committees
for the betterment of the business. Take for example the Halloween Decoration
Committee. 

With most breakups, parties hire lawyers and split assets. Since I'm both an

will claim me? ;-)

On the serious side, I wonder if employers will continue to value either

Yes, the EU has a new cybersecurity requirement for IoT devices (WiFi,

I would expect to see a lot more about this topic as implementation dates get

All,

In the last few months, I've received a number of inquiries from recruiters
thinking I have an interest in Cybersecurity. Many of these come to me via
LinkedIn and I realize the word "compliance" shows up in many disciplines such
as legal, financial, medical, etc. But now it seems all the recent hype into
Cybersecurity and I.T. Compliance has created a fair bit of "noise"; and in my
case as it is never related to EMC or Product Safety. Although I suppose
Regulatory Compliance could be construed...

I am curious to know if others on this forum are seeing a similar increase in
inquiries, or is it just me?

Gary,

The LED driver (assuming AC-to-DC) should be approved; however, the kit does
not need to be certified. The field inspection will take into consideration
the LED driver along with the rest of the equipment.

I think you should be good to go!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the feedback. I am asking if a retrofit kit can/should be
evaluated/certified to 62368. And for a twist, the product it goes into may
not have NRTL approval when it leaves the factory and will need to be field
evaluated after the kit is installed.

Cheers,

Hello Gary,

Can you please clarify your first question? Are you asking if the retrofit
kits should be evaluated/certified to 62368, or, if a product that has been
evaluated/certified to 62368 can incorporate a retrofit kit?

For your second question, most will suggest that a qualified/trained person
should conduct the retrofit kit installation; however, it is likely that the
AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) will require an inspection of the equipment
once the work is completed. Usually, this can be accomplished via 'Special
Inspection' with an accredited body (UL, CSA, etc...)

Subject: [PSES] Retrofit kits

Hello Experts,
I am trying to understand the requirements around UL Listed retrofit kits
intended for installation in the field. The only ones I am aware of are for
upgrading light fixtures from older technologies to LED's. There are several
flavors such as Self-ballasted LED Type Lamp category (OOLV) and Sign
Conversions, Retrofit (UYWU).

Can retrofit kits be listed for IT products examined to UL62368? Does it help
if the installation is only done by trained personnel?

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers,
Gary Tornquist

Re: [PSES] Retrofit kits

2022-05-24 Thread Chris Brown

Yes, 60950-1 to 62368-1 has been an 'adventure'.

Chris

EU Directives don't require assessing (to new standards) to "remain compliant"
- they require re-assessing to maintain a "Presumption of Conformity".
There is no grandfathering under CE marking as standards are only every
optional (though that's a narrow technicality to sit on for some directives)

Market enforcement and customers expect Harmonised Standards to be applied, and
that's the recommended approach.
Depending on the product, and how it was configured and monitored when tested
against EN 55024, you may find that only partial re-testing is required. This
is much more straightforward for the transition from 55024 to 55035 than for
60950-1 to 62368-1

Best regards
Charlie

FORWARD:
In an Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/455 issued in mid-March, the Commission
moved to replace the 2010 edition of EN 55024, Electromagnetic compatibility -
Product family standard for audio, video, audio-visual and entertainment
lighting control apparatus for professional use - Part 2: Immunity, with EN
55035: 2017, Electromagnetic compatibility of multimedia equipment - Immunity
requirements. The date of withdrawal for EN 55024:2010 is mid-September 2022.

QUESTION:
Will this withdrawal be similar to the withdrawal of EN 60950-1, where models
compliant with EN 60950-1 had to be assessed to EN 62368-1 in-order-to remain
compliant?
Or, will the change to EN 55035:2017 allow existing models to be
"grandfathered" (i.e., models assessed to EN 55024:2010 not required to be
assessed to the new harmonized standard EN 55035:2017)?

Thanks,
Chris

Friends,

Are there any other government agency that can do safety tests beside JET in
Japan? I have been dealing with JET directly and it has been a nightmare due to
their lack of knowledge of ITE standard and wanted to see if there are any
other labs that I can use rather than JET.

Thanks

[PSES] EMC Testing Required for Cables with E-Markers?

2020-02-27 Thread Chris Brown
Hello colleagues!

Do (otherwise) passive cables with e-markers require EMC/EMI testing for North
America and Europe?
Example: USB-C cable with power delivery

I don't see a specific exemption for them in the FCC regulation; however, the
function of e-markers is not necessarily taken into account.

Thanks,
Chris
