RE: Don'r Get Caught Running a Red Traffic Light!

2002-03-08 Thread Hare, Paul

This thread has digressed quite a bit... Allow me to add to it!

3M makes something called the Opticom System. It is a traffic management
device that really helps emergency vehicles make their way thru heavy
traffic...

Here's an article that summarizes it nicely:
http://www.pilotonline.com/news/nw0111roa.html

Also, there is a well produced video under the 3M Opticom System section
here:

Subject: Re: Don'r Get Caught Running a Red Traffic Light!

Just as a side issue about remote monitoring of
red-light runners ...

One unintended consequence of cameras watching
for people who run lights happened in Fremont
about 2 years ago. A couple of stop lights were
set up with cameras as an experiment.

During the course of rush hour traffic one day at
one of the experimental camera sites, an emergency
vehicle was stuck behind several vehicles sitting
for a red light. Apparently the fire truck was boxed
in since the roads were several lanes wide and the
truck was all the way over in a right lane. Lights
and siren were blaring away.

Q: Did any of the cars move out of the way of the
fire truck and in doing so some would have to
move through the intersection and thus thru the
red light?

A: No.

Reason: No one wanted to get a ticket running
the red light.

Be rather ironic that the fire truck was responding
to the home of someone sitting at that intersection.

Just something to think about.

Regards, Doug McKean

RE: AC 97

2002-02-22 Thread Hare, Paul

The source may be differential, but common mode currents generally
contribute much more to radiated emissions, especially with cables... It
sounds like you have cable radiation (100MHz) as well as maybe slot
radiation (600MHz)... Tell us more about your device's test setup... (i.e.
chassis and cabling details)...

Esteemed Colleages;

Has anyone had experience using Audio-Codec '97 (AC 97) topology with
respect to EMC performance. It is commonly used in PC sound cards. We have

seeing very high emissions between 100-600 MHz. The offending RF noise

RE: EFT Failures..Update!

2001-10-24 Thread Hare, Paul

Alex, make sure you investigate whether or not energy is coupling to other
cables of the EUT and causing problems. In other words, try to reduce the
system (remove cables) and see if the EFT failures persist. If you can't
remove a cable due to functionality, place ferrites on it instead (near the
EUT). You may be surprised how a failure manifests itself. Sometimes
you've got to back up and take a look at the forest... :)

Good luck...

Alex,

What happened during the burst test ? Did the EUT break down or did you only
have minor disturbances/faults during the test ?

I assume that you know that EFT/bursts usually is a performance criteria B
test, which means that temporary faults are accepted during the test, as
long that the EUT is self-recoverable after the test.

Hi Group,

THANKS for your very much appreciated responses!! I was in panic mode!!

I thought it would be appropriate to let you know the status.

My product is a small all plastic enclosure Point if Sale (POS) Class III
terminal. It has an external SMPS, Class II, no earth, supplying SELV, 12Vdc
1.5A to my product. The power supply works OK with some of our other
products, for EMC. The problem is with my product.

I solved the problem at the test house by wrapping a few turns of the DC PSU
cable through a Large Ferrite Clamp at the Product input (it did not work
so well at the PSU I/P nor O/P). The fix cannot be considered final due to
obvious reasons.

I am now at my Lab, now the serious diagnostics begin. I have been trying
various quick fixes to no avail i.e. Caps, TVS, MOV etc.

If you have any further comments feel free to email me.

THANKS again to all those who responded with their thoughts. I can tell you
they were wide and varied just as you would expect to trying to resolve an
EMC problem over the NET!!

Best Regards

 Hi Guys,

I am at an EMC test centre today and tomorrow. Unfortunately, my product

My product is Class II, no Earth. It is supplied by an external power

Has anyone got a quick solution to my problem so that I can implement here

RE: FCC rule interpretation (add'l info)

2001-08-17 Thread Hare, Paul
Stuart,

As a side note, I've seen an FCC application where the second harmonic of
the device was measured and reported to be at the limit (i.e. 54 dBuV/m).
Since the second harmonic was the closest to the limit, the transmitter's
power had been increased to a point at which there was zero margin
(questionable philosophy considering manufacturing variabilities, I know).
The limit is the limit, right?? Unfortunately, 54 dBuV/m is technically
greater than 500 uV/m and the FCC wouldn't certify the device.

I only make these comments since you have been using 54 and 74 dB in your
postings...

Not sure if you got my last response.

Answer is no(IMO). If the idea is to be able to take peak measurements
instead of average measurements to expedite the test, then I suggest you
take your peak measurements and compare them to average limits. If the peak
measurement meets both the calculated peak limit(5000 uv/m) and the stated
average limit(500uv/m), then there is no need to make the average
measurement. If, however, the peak measurement meets only the peak limit,
you are still obligated to take an average measurement and compare it to the
average limit. The stated limit always takes precedence over any derived
limits.

Does this imply that we can use 74 dBuV/m (at 3 meters) rather than the 54
dBuV/m limit
if we took measurements employing peak detection?

I left that last part out in the previous question.

RE: EN61558 60742

2001-08-17 Thread Hare, Paul
Brian,

As of August 1, 2001, EN 60742:1995 should not be used for presumption of
conformity to the LVD. EN61558-2-6:1997 supercedes it.

The last date of mfr is unimportant. The date which the xfrmrs are placed
on the market determines which standards to use in order to demonstrate
compliance. Although a device may be built before the date of cessation of
superceded standard, it still must comply with the newer standard if that
date has passed. Generally speaking, there is a three to four year window
between when the new standard is announced in the Official Journal of the
European Communities, and when it becomes required. Usually that is a long
enough period of time to allow industry to comply with the new standards.

See the following file for more info on the standards and dates of the
LVD...

I would check with the:
local
county
state
federal
requirements - in that order. That is the hierarchy established here in the
State of Minnesota.
I was also advised during a recent ISO Audit that we as a supplier of
electronic equipment using a Lithium Ion battery are required to advise our
European customers of proper disposal techniques in our device labeling
(i.e. user manual). I have not had time to research these requirements as of
yet. Does anyone in the forum have any references they are willing to pass
on regarding this situation?
Thank You

PS - I'm beginning to believe that Lithium Ion Batteries are not a good
thing to tie into electronic equipment!

Maybe sort of off topic.

What's the disposal procedures for batteries such as
the A, AA, AAA, C, D, lithiums ... ?

Are you supposed to just throw them into the trash?

What if a customer a customer calls in to ask such
a question and let's say they're in the US, Canada,
or Europe? What are you supposed to say or
what agency or website?

Detachable AC Cordset Selection for the EU

2001-06-13 Thread Hare, Paul

Hello group,

I am in the process of specifying detachable AC cordsets for European
distribution of my product. It uses an autoranging power supply
(100-240VAC) and is rated for 12 A max with a C14 appliance coupler. I
initially thought this would be a trivial task of matching plug and
connector variations for each of the EU countries and specifying a 12 A
cord. However, it looks like all the cordsets that are generally available
with European connectors are rated for 10 A max. I am also lead to believe
that the C14 coupler is rated for 15A in North America, but only 10 amps in
Europe. Are electrons hotter on the east side of the pond??

Amongst my circle of compliance peers, there seems to be a difference of
opinion as to what current rating the cordset should have. I would think
that the current rating of any cordset I choose for Europe would need to be
rated for 12A (Better safe than sorry, right?). But half of the people I've
talked to say, But why? The current will be about half of the 12A max, or
6 amps, due to the higher line voltage. And after all, the mains voltage
should be within 10% of nominal!! Therefore a 10A cordset is plenty good!

If I had my way, I would special order a 12A cordset (And I guess this would
change my appliance coupler?). But, it would be nice if I could buy an
off-the-shelf 10A cordset because of pricing and availability issues.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance,

Paul Hare

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING WARNING FROM IRV LEVINSON:
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as an 'ATT Service Technician' who was conducting a
test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should
touch nine(9), zero (0), pound (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was
suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by
pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your
telephone
line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home
phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from
many local jails/prisons.
I have also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific
Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware.
DO NOT press 9 0 # for ANYONE.
The GTE Security Department requested that I share this
information with EVERYONE I KNOW.
PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know. If you have
mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected
with,
I encourage you to pass on this information to them, too.
After checking with Verizon, they said it was true so do not dial
nine (9), zero (0), pound (#) and hang up for anyone!

Cable Harnesses and Product Safety (UL1950/CSA C22.2 no. 950)

2001-03-15 Thread Hare, Paul

I use an outside vendor to assemble various cable harnesses for my products.
The vendor is recognized by UL and CSA and undergoes quarterly audits. I
supply a drawing that specifies certain components (e.g. Connector X, Line
Filter Y). However, I leave it up to them to use whatever UL/CSA recognized
wire and shrink tube they have laying around. (I indicate the color, gauge,
etc., but not the manufacturer or part number.)

When my product safety evaluation is performed, what documentation do I need
to satisfy the UL/CSA engineer regarding the wire and shrink tube?

Comments are appreciated.
