Re: [PSES] Filter Issues [General Use]

2021-10-28 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi all

Thanks for the replies,

The filter is a ETS Lindgren Filter N6003 installed on the EMC Chamber wall.
The filter is defined as a 4 line 230/400V 32A <450Hz filter.
When used for DEF STAN EMC measurements and loaded by the 4 of 10uF prior to
the 5uH LISNs it appears to be OK,
however when only 1 phase is used it seems to cause an imbalance.

The ambient measurement shows the 400Hz and harmonics. Other than the region
6kHz to 50kHz which exceeds the specified limit the rest of the frequency range
is flat and meets the 6dB below the specified limit criteria.
The use of 10uF on each supply lead on the load side of the LISN's improves the
response of the 6kHz to 50kHz region but this is still within 6dB of the
specified limit.

Is there anything that can be done to improve the chamber filter performance?

The original 155V 400Hz generator never caused any issues, when it was replaced
had an issue with the filter being noisy.
Chamber was replaced when EMC facility moved to a new building.
Originally 115V 400Hz to be taken from building supply but LISN's kept tripping
supply.
Now supply obtained from a Failsafe SFC 6010 Static Convertor.

Andy

[PSES] Filter Issues [General Use]

2021-10-27 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi members

Can anyone offer some advice.
Have issues with EMC Chamber RF Filter 3 phase.
Using 115V 400Hz single phase supply from a static convertor, filter looks like
it is saturating.
Ambient levels failing between 6kHz to 150kHz.
Voltage of phase at static convertor 115.8Vrms but at EUT on bench 132Vrms

[PSES] 41 " Rod Antennas [General Use]

2019-04-25 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi all,

Is there anyone who has done an ambient noise floor analysis of 41" rod
antennas to determine those with the best performance.
This question comes as a result of the changes to DEF STAN 59-411 Part 3 Issue
3 where DRE03.B is being incorporated into DRE01.B and the limit over the
frequency range 1.6MHz to 30MHz will be 5dBuV/m. Not all active rod antennas
will meet this limit.

[PSES] CE106 Test set-up info [General Use]

2018-12-11 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi all.

Can anyone help with this query?
Doing a CE106 test, have had to insert 60dB attenuation (40dB + 20dB) in the
antenna output to help prevent the receiver input overloading.
These values incorporated into the measurement software.
Also have had to include a Hi Pass Filter 780MHz to 3000MHz to cover some of
the transmit frequencies.
The attenuation can be compensated for in the software but without Auto Range
On the receiver goes into over load when the transmit frequency is reached.
With Auto Range on the measurement recovers but if the external attenuation is
reduced to attenuation remains increase for the remaining duration of the sweep.
Software used is EMC32.
Is there anything that I am missing or is there a better way to set this test
up?

Andy

Re: [PSES] LED Spots in EMC Chamber [General Use]

2017-11-22 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Thanks everyone for the replies.

I will pass this information onto the person who raised this query.
>From the information I was provided the LED Spots issue a broadband noise seen
>as rise in the ambient noise floor over the frequency range 30MHz to 180MHz,
>there is some minor noise between 18MHz to 30MHz but the rest of the frequency
>range between 20Hz and 18GHz is clean.
The effect on the 30MHz to 180MHz is a lift in the ambient noise floor
approx..8-10dB around 40MHz getting less as the frequency increases. The test
engineer stated that the measurements were still below spec limits but
apparently during system measurements was enough to cause the unit to fail.
(Unit passed when the LED Spots switched off.
There is no noise detectable during conducted emissions (20Hz to 150MHz).

Re: [PSES] EMI Software [General Use]

2017-08-02 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi all,

I have used various versions of Emission Software including HP, Emtest,
EMCHire, Labview, Emiscan, Qinetiq own software, and R EMC32.
Of these if you use R EMI receivers then the EMC32 is probably the best. If
you have other types of receivers than you should use the best for that
receiver.

For Immunity I use the AR Emcware V3.6, aside from this being free it is very
easy to use and seems to provide reliable and repeatable results.

Re: [PSES] Chamber grounding [General Use]

2017-07-19 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Thanks all for the replies.

It seems that there is some divided opinion.

Some of the test houses I have spoken to state that they definitely ground
their chambers via ground spikes. This is to remove low frequency noise that
causes issues with the low frequency emc tests that are required in mil-std,
def stan  and rtca/do-160.
One test house I spoke to stated that as a result of cost cutting an earth
spike was not fitted so earthing was taken to building ground, as a result of
this the test house has issues with low frequency noise.

The consensus of the forum is that a ground spike should not be required and
the building ground used should be enough.

This then probably raises the question of how good is the building ground? Is
there a requirement for this?
If there is noise on the building ground how can this be eliminated?

Andy

Hi All

Which is the best to use?
Ground each EMC chamber via an earth spike or back to the transformer of the

Which is best practice?

[PSES] Calculating Modulated Power Output. [General Use]

2017-06-29 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi all.

I hope one of the RF engineers can help with this.

When calculating ERP you use the Tx power either in dBW or W and the antenna
gain in dBi.
So when you have pulse modulation, example 9.3GHz, 38.5dBW (7676.89W) ERP at a
duty cycle of 13%, do you calculate the modulated power level by using the ERP
dBW or the actual ERP Watts?

[PSES] CE Compliance [General Use]

Hi all,

Can a statement that a product is compliant with the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC
or 2014/30/EU in the support documentation be regarded as proof of conformity
or does there have to be a Declaration of Conformity which states compliance
with the Directive via appropriate standards???
Also to refresh my memory does the DofC have to be supplied to the end user or
can it be held by the products distributor in the EU??

Thanks Ken,

That's the first piece of the puzzle covered, so still looking for 10KHz-400KHz
and above 10MHz.
Not sure if Fischer have a full solution for this but will ring them back to
see :-)

Does anyone know of other vendors who may be able to help?

Although they don't show a data sheet, you can derive from the max input power
and insertion loss that it's capable of injecting 2 amps. But only between
roughly 400 kHz to 10 MHz.

Subject: [PSES] RF CS High Current Test Level

Hi Folks

Does anyone have experience generating 1.7A CW (10KHz - 400MHz) using Bulk
Current Injection?

Wondering how people have achieved it, is there a BCI on the market able to
sustain this level "off the shelf" or a vendor who custom builds them?

A possible alternative was to use multiple BCI's and a Power Splitter, but I
can see this problematic at higher frequencies due to wavelength/phase etc

I realise that you would need separate BCI's, splitting the test into frequency
bands as no one BCI could do it all

Thanks for any help provided

Rich

AS far as I am aware there is only one Bulk Current Injection Probe available
for doing high level injection.
It was origonally designed by a Mr Dave Herke at Qinetiq and sold through
Schaffner Chase, later Teseq.
The probe in question is a CIP-9136A. These are made to order.

There are hex screws in the eternal case of the probe which can be removed and
connection to forced air cooling which will be reqired for this and higher
level to prevent damage to the core.

I do believe it is possible to hire them as well from places such as EMC-Hire
UK.

Hope this helps

I had a reply from R which stated that by changing the units in the

the measurement is carried out. So far the measurements are working out

[PSES] Passive Loop Emissions [General Use]

2017-02-27 Thread Price, Andrew (Leonardo, UK)
Hi All

I need some help in obtaining the correct result.

The customer has requested an extended magnetic field emission test over the
range 100kHz to 2MHz with a limit defined in dBpT.
The antenna to be used is an EMCO 6512 which has it correction factors provided
in dBS/m which the emission software used does not recognise.
So is there a conversion factor that enables the right correction factor to be
entered or is the conversion factor only used once a result is obtained??

Hi all

Can anyone shed some light on working up the Uncertainty Measurement

I need to show the uncertainty values for these tests as follows:
Uncertainty in overall test level = 2.2dB, Uncertainty in time measurement =
1.91%, Uncertainty in Amplitude measurement = 0.82%

MIL-STD-461 defines
4.3.1 Measurement tolerances.
Unless otherwise stated for a particular measurement, the tolerance shall be as
