Re: [PSES] Seismic requirements- Euro Machinery Directive
Hi! Sad enough to say, Italy regularly undergoes earthquakes with casualties and/or damages to structures with a period of about 10 to 20 years. That without forgetting that Greece is also a EU member. Kind regards Canio Dichirico ESO www.eso.orghttp://www.eso.org Germany P.S. Re: [PSES] Seismic requirements- Euro Machinery Directive
Some of the product specific standards include requirements for protection against siesmic effects, although I don’t know of any which are harmonised under the Machinery Directive. Probably the one closest is: BS ISO 11031. Cranes. Design principles for seismic load” which is still a draft (12/30269745 DC). Purchaseable from BSI for GBP20. I’ve just had a quick look at it, and it contains quite a lot of maths, but it also gives risk factors for different territories worldwide. I’d say it’s probably a good start for answering the question you asked (and since it’s a draft, it’s cheap!). I’m not sure whether or not I agree with Lauren that the MD does not require you to consider siesmic effects. What I do know is that it’s wrong to think that just because the risk is very low in places like the UK then you never need to do anything about earthquake protection.* If you are designing serious infrastructure (rail, power stations etc) then earthquake risk definitely needs to be on your radar. Nick. *note: not that I’m accusing you of this! Re: [PSES] Seismic requirements- Euro Machinery Directive
From the MD Annex I 1.3.1. Risk of loss of stability Machinery and its components and fittings must be stable enough to avoid overturning, falling or uncontrolled movements during transportation, assembly, dismantling and any other action involving the machinery. If the shape of the machinery itself or its intended installation does not offer sufficient stability, appropriate means of anchorage must be incorporated and indicated in the instructions. I'd interpret this to apply to seismic stability if that could be a concern. -Dave -Original Message- From: Pete Perkins [mailto:0061f3f32d0c-dmarc-requ...@ieee.org] Sent: Monday, November 24, 2014 4:37 PM To: EMC-PSTC@LISTSERV.IEEE.ORG Subject: [PSES] Seismic requirements- Euro Machinery Directive ok group, I'm dealing with a large machine which, by design, seems top-heavy. Re: [PSES] Seismic requirements- Euro Machinery Directive
Dave, We're familiar with these usual stability requirements and the mechanical team is confident the equipment is adequate for these circumstances. The additional questions arise from direct seismic action and the additional forces developed during such an event. It doesn't seem to me that the Euro Zone is particularly active from the seismic point of view and we've not run into this issue before but are doing our due diligence here to ensure that no stone is left unturned. The USGS Seismic history of the earth 1900-2014 website doesn't even include a reporting zone for Europe. So maybe this isn't an issue for the MD. :) br, Pete Peter E Perkins, PE Principal Product Safety Engineer PO Box 23427 Tigard, ORe 97281-3427 503/452-1201 fone/fax p.perk...@ieee.org _ _ _ _ _ From the MD Annex I 1.3.1. Hi Pete: I've never run across a seismic requirement for the EU. If for some reason you want to apply some seismic tests as part of your safety evaluation, the telecom industry here is the USA includes seismic requirements in Telcordia standard GR-63. I suspect that there may be some candidate MIL specs as well. Pete, I do not think seismic stability is in scope of the MD concerns, nonetheless for EU seismic concerns take a look at EN 1998-1: Eurocode 8: Design of structures for earthquake resistance - Part 1: General rules, seismic actions and rules for buildings and consider the requirements for non-structural elements of buildings.
