RE: looking for used power supply
Recent products introduced by Elgar, Pacific Power, and others have an output range from DC to kHz, perform a multitude of EMC/safety measurements and test conditions, are no larger than 4U (some are smaller), and full featured for less than $8k(US). There are less expensive AC sources available (some $3k), but they may not be instrument-grade. Tell your boss to open his wallet let the moths free... For simple production-line testing, that required some degree of automation, I've use motor-driven variacs. For even more simple (simplistic ?) requirements, I've used zero-sense crossing SSRs that switch taps in transformer windings. And, given a clear requirements specification, I am certain that the clever people of this listserv will think of solutions that are much more elegant. I speak only for myself. I am very familiar with this type equipment. If you are familiar with this type equipment you should also know that an Elgar covering this power range, variable from say 40 to 400 Hz costs upwards of $25K, takes 5 rack bays to house, and 6 weeks to order in. On the other hand if Mike is simply looking for something to make 50 Hz from 60 Hz then a simple motor gen set costing a few $K will do the job. Finally if Mike is really trying to hook up a single phase load to a 3 phase main, then all he needs is the right transformer. $1K The operative word here is variable and in what context. It seemed obvious to me that Mike was not familiar with this subject and could have mis-specificed his requirements, i.e. did he say variable when he meant compatible? Re: looking for used power supply
How about the good old HP Harmonic Flicker Test Sysytem that Agilent was thinking about discontinuing support on? (remember that thread a while ago?) I don't know about the current (it seems like I remember 9-10A max), but I know you could dial in any voltage and frequency (DC-500Hz??) and it would produce it! If Agilent did discontinue support, you could probably get a great deal! Dave Mike Stone wrote: Good Day, I am looking into purchasing a used power supply. RE: looking for used power supply
Sir, Please do not take as flame. I've yet to work at a company, that make products for connection to AC mains, intended for use in multiple countries, and being both serious professional about testing for compliance and performance, that did not have at least one of these instruments in the lab. Please visit the web pages of Elgar, Pacific Power, Agilent, etc. The requirement should be obvious. -Original Message- From: Fred Townsend [mailto:f...@poasana.com] Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2001 1:42 PM To: Mike Stone Cc: emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org Subject: Re: looking for used power supply I can see why you might have difficulty finding such a device. Another option might be to use a variac (adjustable auto transformer) to adjust the input. -Original Message- From: Kenneth McCormick [mailto:kmccormick...@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2001 4:26 PM To: emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org Subject: Re: looking for used power supply It sounds like Mike is looking for a power supply to provide power to test electrical devices (not a power supply to be installed in a product). Hi Michael, Can you be more specific about what you need for inputs and outputs? Or, perhaps, you could describe the problem you are trying to solve?
