[Emc-users] manual tool change

2008-08-21 Thread Len Shelton
What behavior should I expect with the M6 manual tool change routine? I need
to be able to jog the z-axis up and down to swap the bit, then re-zero that
axis before continuing. From what I can tell, it only just pauses the
program but will not allow me to jog or zero.

I am not near my machine at the moment, but I believe it is running 2.2.2 or
newer.

Thanks.

Len

2008-08-21 Thread Kai Schaeffer
Hm, this thread seems to be stuck a little bit. I am new here and I even
don't use EMC until now. But a conference would be great for us to learn
for our future projects. So please do it. :-) I know, contribution is
the essence of the OpenSource world so what I could offer to support it
is a location. We have a conference room for up to 50 persons (it could
be split if necessary) and enough space to setup demonstrating machines.
The big disadvantage of our location is, that we don't have own EMC
machines. We are located in Berlin, what is always worth a visit. :-)

What I need right now is some brainstorming what you really would like
to have in a meeting (except the bbq). What type of classes? A
retrofit? Seminar? Visits? Please shout it out! :)

I would like to attend. I don't know if I have anything to offer.

Is there any idea about a location? I don't know if there are
area's where a lot of emc users are concentrated?

For beginners it might be interesting to learn something about the
different ways tot retrofit a machine. Making it visible what does
and doesn't work and why a certain setup is better or cheaper. For
instance a stepper motor wich is too weak for the load, or a screw
which is too long for a certain speed. Seeing things makes you
remember it more easily. OTOH, this only makes sense if you can
get visitors who might start with EMC.
For current users some HAL tutorials, presentations, trainings or
hands on sessions can be interesting.

Is there an estimate about the number of visitors you can expect?

 Dirk

Thanks Ray.

I tried this, but at first it didn't work (the monitor wouldn't sync).
Adding a line to specify the mode as 1280x1024 was the final touch.

Thanks again (and to SWPadnos who suggested the same thing with less

I had a few little problems with the AXIS GUI display using the default

Heh - the lack of detail was due to my lack of specific knowledge there
- I have no 8.04 systems. My only experience with one surprised me when
the xorg.conf was nearly empty :)

Thanks again to Ray for the specific information - I'm sure I'll find it

Sound good, Jon.

Some other things I've noticed in my (still ongoing) conversion to EMC2.

1 -- The Integrator manual pages have the wrong names for some of the pins.

2 -- It would be nice if the univpwm_io.hal file had the inverted sense
for the limit and home switches. As far as I can tell, most people use
normally closed switches for these functions. It is set up now for
normally open switches. Lines in the file for both with the unused one
commented out would make it easier for the integrator.

Ken

Yes, gedit is very good, but for some reason I don't seem to have
 it on this
F8 box. A pity, really. I got started with vi before I ever ran
 linux, we
had a conversion patch for tsedit on the coco/os9 systems that
 turned it into
a vi clone, so I've been using that for over 20 years now.

As for quitting vi, ESC:wqENTER will exit the edit mode, then
 save and quit
the editor. My fingers do it in their sleep. :)

vi may be vile but it works, it is on every 'nix system, it
tolerates large files

I end up leaving interesting char strings in the middle of edits
with non-vi editors just from reflex.

With older, slower machines I can have short edits done with vi
before larger editors even come up.

There's a reason for this. When a user fisrt fires up the

Ah, commented out lines for the opposite sense would be a good

Re: [Emc-users] manual tool change

2008-08-21 Thread Len Shelton
Thanks for the answer, but what can we do about this? I would say that 95%
of the EMC2 user base (especially the newer silent ones) are using off the
shelf routers for thier spindles and do not have presetable tool options.

How hard would it be to make it function like I described?

I could fairly easily probe the tool length after swapping each bit, but I'd
still need to jog during the tool change and still maintain my x and y
reference.

With respect,
Len
