Yes, those are open-loop stepper motors. I _think_ that it even has
software step generation, but I am not sure.

I have a couple of domains and they are on a server that sits on a DSL
line. I use a dynamic DNS setup to direct traffic to the server.
I use it as a low volume web server and for email collection.
The DSL connection does not allow mail to be sent from a SMTP server
sitting on their DSL lines. I tried to circumvent their filters but they
really have it locked down.
Still, I get stuff in my inbox - perhaps 20 messages per week saying
that the messages that I sent were returned. This has been going on for
years.
I send mail out on a secured SMTP server that is remote.
I still get hackers into that server trying to set it up so they can
send messages, but it simply is not possible.
Some of these hackers have way too much time on their hands!
From what I see I would not be surprised if 90% of the email traffic on
the web these days is spam.

The motors are a bit klunky, but serviceable. Typically, they are 11 A
motors,
though. The stock Bridgeport drives are GHASTLY, and you would be doing
everybody a favor by trashing them. They are full-step drives with no
current
control. They use a magnetic amplifier to switch between idle current and
running current. Many people have had fairly good luck with Gecko stepper
drives, or there are apparently Leadshine (China) drives that can give
rated current and handle higher voltage.

If you try to use the stock drives, you need to provide 4 signals per
axis, although
they are complementary pairs, so inverters can turn the wave drive into the
4 signals. Then, you need to provide the High-low current selection to
the transistor
for the mag amp based on whether the motor is below creeping speed or moving
rapidly.

LinuxCNC currently runs on Ubuntu 12.04 in Simulation mode only. Debs
in the usual places.

LinuxCNC realtime requires RTAI, and it has not been ported to Linux 3.2
(the Ubuntu 12.04 kernel), so LinuxCNC realtime can't run on "normal"
Ubuntu 12.04.

It is possible to run Ubuntu 12.04 with the RTAI kernel from 10.04
(Linux 2.6.32), and in that case you can compile LinuxCNC from source
and run it. You get the 12.04 userspace on the 10.04 kernel, so no new
hardware support, just new userspace tools.

Michael Joyce just completed a kickstarter project for a 3D
printer, he got $510,000 in one month. He now has to deliver
about 180 systems. This is the b9creator project.
A lot of discussion of this type machine has been going on on
the Yahoo group :
diy_3d_printing_and_fabricat...@yahoogroups.com

The basic idea is a vat of photosensitive resin and a build
platform that raises above the vat. A DLP-type computer
projector shines through the bottom of the vat to expose a
layer at a time, which is made planar by the vat bottom.
A guy in Spain is providing relatively inexpensive resins.
Software has been modified from the standard reprap software
preview mode. The last problems that Michael solved was
preventing the model from sticking to the vat bottom (a clear
silicone similar to RTV was used) and preventing a suction
cup effect (his scheme is to have a plateau of the silicone
for the build area and slide the model sideways to a lower
area of the floor to prevent suction.)

The advantage of this machine is it exposes an entire
layer in parallel, and has about an 8-10 second cycle time,
regardless of layer complexity. Pixels of 50 - 100 um
are typical, and layer thicknesses of 20 - 50 um are
what they are using, I think.

Pretty much all the details have been hashed out on that
group.

Re: [Emc-users] How to test original Bridgeport Series I CNC Mill

Igor,

I have a Boss 5 still running the original control. Assuming you're feeding it
3 phase power, you press the E-stop override button (like you've done) and the
light should go out. Then make sure that you're in "setup" mode on the rotary
switch at the top right of the panel. Then you should be able to jog the axes.
I have the manuals, but only in paper format. I'm happy to answer any
questions you might have. Obviously, it's unlikely that more than one axis has
a blown transistor, so if at least one of them doesn't run, then there may be
something else wrong.

It's also worth mentioning that if you're using a rotary phase converter, it's
important that the generated phase not feed the stepper power supply. The
generated voltage is too high, overloading the stepper drive and blowing
transistors. I believe it's connected to L1 & L2 but you'll have to confirm.
When I first installed the machine, I went through 2 or 3 transistors before
figuring this out.

With respect to conversions, I understand that a breakout board can be used to
adapt the machine to EMC2, but can't say what additional hardware might be
required. Someone else will have to speak to that.

I don't have three phase power, so I'm doing the total retrofit (excepting
steppers), with Gecko 203V's, Antek 70VDC power supply & 240 to 120V stepdown
transformer, a VFD, and a Pico Systems USC board. I plan to control the
original air motor for the varispeed drive, wire up the original lube pump, and
the coolant/spray mister relay with EMC. I have yet to begin the conversion,
so I'm not sure what challenges I will encounter.

The fundamental problem with a RepStrap made from a typical milling
machine is speed: my rather customized Thing-O-Matic prints reasonably
well at 30 mm/s and makes rapid motions at 250 mm/s.

That's about 70 in/min printing and 600 in/min moving, which seems
rather peppy for most affordable milling machines.

At those speeds, an "interesting" object requires upwards of a half hour
to print, with the largest one taking (IIRC) four hours.

Tuned Ultimakers seem to have the fastest printing these days, somewhere
upwards of 150 mm/s; call it 350 in/min.

You can scale the total time pretty much linearly by the printing speed,
because that's what it spends most of its time doing. My Sherline,
admittedly a slug, tops out at 24 in/min = 10 mm/s, so larger objects
would require a bit over three consecutive shifts.

That's why you need a purpose-built 3D printer...

Greetings,

Has anyone used servo motors with mirrors as scanner galvos using LinuxCNC to
drive them? Or possibly a polygonal mirror with an encoder?

If not, can it be done? Seems like with the kinematics it should be possible.

I imagine for high resolution over a relatively large area (at least 1m square)
the servo would have to be geared down quite a bit - maybe around 100:1.

Any insight into this topic would be greatly appreciated!

We use Mitsubishi J2S servo drivers for plasma machines. Its encoder cable
is shielded, while its power cable is not. We had EMI issues with servo
drivers at beginning. Then we realized that we need an isolated
pulse/encoder interface for such machine. So, we developed one, and it
solves the EMI issue.

[Emc-users] How to test original Bridgeport Series I CNC Mill

2012-06-27 Thread Igor Chudov
I finally brought a Series I CNC Bridgeport to my warehouse.

It does power up.

http://igor.chudov.com/tmp/Bridgeport-Series-1/

It does not complain of anything, however, I was pressing various
buttons and I could not get it to do anything, such as move in X, Y,
and Z.

I did take it out of E-Stop.

I am wondering if anyone has a manual for it, or a simple instruction
like "press this and then press that button" to just get it to move
and move the spindle.

Secondly, is my recollection correct that EMC2 is easily capable of running
such a machine?

Would one need to replace stepper drives or can they be used with, say, Jon
Elson's system?

I would love it if someone said "I used boards A,B,C and it was easy". Kind
of like for my own Series II Interact 2, I used Jon's controller board and
AMC servo drives and it was "easy". (BG)

a bit a few months ago, and hope to get back to it this summer.
I'd be happy to contribute content to the wiki page once I have
something going. At least collecting links to the several
documented builds using linuxcnc would be helpful.

Why would anyone who owns a mill buy a reprap kit? With your
knowledge of linear motion you could build a far superior machine in
an afternoon :-)

I got a couple of the equivalent Copley drive for a future retrofit.
Note these are
torque-mode only drives, where the analog command input determines winding
current on two terminals. (Of course, the 3rd terminal needs to equal
the sum of
the other two.)

I believe a couple people have gotten this working with Mesa hardware
and the
BLDC component. I plan on using my own PPMC hardware, but the analog
outputs
are not anything special, it is the HAL connections that determine what
they do.

I just was looking for a small computer, and I found i.mx53 Quick Start
Board, very small with touchscreen. It runs linux and QNX, but there is no
ARM support in RTAI.

Anders Wallin did some experiments like that in 2010:

http://www.anderswallin.net/2010/12/3d-printer-first-test/
http://www.anderswallin.net/2010/12/3d-printer-day-2/

I'm not sure what's happened since then...

[Emc-users] Plasma

2012-06-27 Thread Viesturs Lācis
Hello, folks!

I have 3 small things.
First one is a question for any useful plasma-specific tips, when
designing plasma cutting machine. I just got a contract for building
one and I would appreciate a chance to learn from other people's
mistakes rather than my own.
Following things are on my to-do list:
1) use shielded cables for encoders AND for motor power; shield is
grounded only on one end of cable, most probably the drive end;
2) connect the machine frame and all the moving constructions and
everything possible to earth grounding;
3) route plasma cable separately from motor/encoder/signal/whatever
cables wherever possible;

I would appreciate, if plasma machine owners could share their
experience and some problem areas they have encountered, when
designing their machines.

Second question - I would appreciate some advices for good and
efficient downdraft table design. I have one brochure, where one
concept is shown, but, guess what, it is not very detailed. So maybe
there is some webpage with useful information on this matter.

And last one - I would like to share a video of Anthony's 5 axis
plasma cutting machine. I think that he has built very nice machine
and I find his design of the rotary head to be very interesting (well,
take a look at other of his videos for some closeups). Actually it
showed me a solution to the problem I encountered, when designed the
head for the waterjet.
I helped him out with 2 kinematics modules:
With the first module the machine can take the angle of torch tilt,
given in the g-code as A word, and keep the direction of the tilt
perpendicular to the XY movement. I do not know about plasmas, but for
waterjet this concept handles the kinematics for taper compensation.
The second is "usual" 5 axis module, which compensates for torch
length offset along x, y and z as the torch is rotated by rotary
joints.
Both kinematics modules will also adjust torch height along central
line of the torch instead of just moving along Z, which is crucial for
5 axis cutting.

The video shows the taper control module in action, running a
testcode, consisting of 2 arcs.

[Emc-users] Status of Linux-emc and 3d printing?

2012-06-27 Thread John Stewart
Hi all;

Noted lots of interest in 3D printing, and have saved the emails.

I do find it a bit confusing, (RAMPS, Mendel, other new words) and am wondering
if anyone is working on a web page to provide a "put an extruder in the
spindle, and 3D print" web page for Linux-EMC?

I keep thinking about pushing the "buy" button for a RepRap kit of parts, but
as I have a perfectly good CNC mill sitting around…

[Emc-users] AMC Sinusoidal Drive

2012-06-27 Thread Todd Zuercher
Has anyone here used some of these brushless sine drives (like an AMC
SX25A20) that take two analog sine waves from the control (the 3rd is
calculated from the other two)?

What hardware did you use? It seems like most hardware is aimed
towards a single signal per drive. I will need to use 4 drives and
there for need 8 analog signals, 4 differential encoders, 4 halls (also
differential like the encoders),

Any one see a problem with using a Mesa 5i25 with 2 7i77s? How hard
would this be to get working?

[Emc-users] Requesting suggestion about viability of a project

2012-06-27 Thread Eugenio Yime Rodriguez
Hi everybody,

I would like to start a project with some of my students.

My thoughts is to use i.mx53 QSP with EMC2, but still there is no support
or RTAI for ARM, so I was thinking in QNX., so my question is:

* Is possible to use LinuxCNC with QNX ?.

Hardware and software:

- A i.mx53 Quick Start Board

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=IMX53QSB

- QNX OS and BSP

http://community.qnx.com/sf/wiki/do/viewPage/projects.bsp/wiki/FreescaleImx53Qst

Thanks in advance,

Eugenio
