[Emc-users] Carving a spiral
A friend and I have been discussing exactly how to write the G-Code to create a spiral scroll. His rotary table 90:1 reduction with a 1600 micro-step motor could be set up to move N steps for each step of the X axis to create the spiral. But that approach seems clumsy. Say I wanted to cut a scroll with a 6mm pitch using a 3mm cutter. Without using G2 or G3 it's really just a triangle isn't it? Move rotary table distance A and move X axis distance A'. Do it in small enough increments and you get a spiral. But I feel like I'm missing something really simple. Suggestions? John The pi has a micro hdmi for video, and any old 1920x1040 monitor just works. So video is not a problem here. I have all machine power controlled by a pair of 60 amp 600 volt SSR's controlled by linuxcnc's F2 key, so the pi is not equipt with a power switch. Uptimes are power failure to power failure, so pi & monitor are around 22 watts when linuxcnc is not running. Rod Webster can supply sd card images for bookworm. Latency is not as good, but plenty adequate to run my lathe well. Currently running with 3 phase closed loop steppers on 45 volt power supplies, no PID's. They do EXACTLY as the TP tells them to or can shut linuxcnc down with the e-stop in a millisecond. Tested well, has never occurred while actually running a job. Re: [Emc-users] Raspberry Pi5
I have had good luck with the 4 but haven't updated it recently.. It seems maybe to be on the edge graphics wise - I would think the 5 would be perfect.. Re: [Emc-users] Raspberry Pi5
The Pi5 has the advantage over a Pi4 of not only a faster CPU but the real step up over the Pi4 is that you can install the file system on a M2 SSD and not have to run off the SD card. But if you look at the price, you get more for the same money if you buy a low-end Intel PC from a place like Newegg. They offer a refurbished Intel I5 with 4gb RAM and SSD for $95.This might seem like it costs $10 more than the Pi5 but the PC has a power supply, case, and cooling fan and the SSD is included too.So it is a bit cheaper than the Pi5. I think the Raspberry Pi is very good for my robotics projects that have to run off battery power and have very limited internal space for the control electronics. But if you are building a machine that runs off AC mains power and is not portable, why bother with a Raspberry Pi? The Pi4 or even Pi3 might be OK for driving the milling machine while it is cutting metal but you do other things like software updates, compiles, and visualizations. > On Apr 9, 2024, at 9:45 AM, John Dammeyer wrote: > > Hi all, > > Will the Pi5 be any better for LinuxCNC than the Pi4 with a MESA Ethernet > Controller or is the Pi4 already more than what LinuxCNC requires? > > John > > > ___ > Emc-users mailing list > Emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users ___ Emc-users mailing list Emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users
