I've a usb tree resembling a weeping willow, over a dozen usb cables

other is doing. The x10 stuff has only been running about 35 years. I'm 
one of the two authors of the Amiga's ezhome software for x19 stuff. 
I've long since forgot the nitty and gritty details of what all I had it 
doing.


Whatever you have that did use the /dev/serial/by-id stuff would not be 
working if the bug is present. Buster is ok, bullseye and bookworm will 
fail and the final trixie is supposed to be fixed.  Your stuff is 
probably too old to be effected.

Like I said earlier, I added the user to the dialout group (using that usermod 
command below) and that fixed my issue.

My system does not show /dev/ttyUSB0 as locked  (I can't say for sure if that 
was the case before I added dialout to the user's groups.

"stat /dev/ttyUSB0"  does contain  Gid: ( 20/ dialout)

I'm not sure that, bug is completely relevant to my issue. As my Mb2hal config 
never used serial/by-id. It has always used /dev/ttyUSB0 to address the RS485 
device. Maybe serial by id might be a better way to address the specific serial 
port used, but I am not even sure if it is even be supported by Mb2hal or 
exactly how to set it up that way (none of the example Mb2hal configurations 
use it.) And even if it were possible, I'm not sure if I still would have had 
the permission problems and I would have also had to fix the udev bug first. 
Changing the permission is all I needed to do to get this working as it was 
before.

Yes, it was a permission issue.  After I added the user to the "dialout" group 
it worked fine.  Thanks Peter for putting me on the right track.

That might be something that should be added to the Mb2hal documentation.  (If 
there isn't something about it already there.)

Debian screwed the moose at debian 11, and it's not fixed until trixie.

Some how a copy paste left out the 2 udev lines that generate the 
/dev/serial/by-id to usb links.  There a pinned patch for that on the 
discord/klipper forum that restores that.

This will properly convert analog input registers read from
a LabJack UE9-Pro over Modbus TCP into a floating point
value readable by an M66 E0 L0.

I am attempting to use a LabJack UE9 data acquisition
device with LinuxCNC using mb2hal.  I want to read
analog input channels, which the UE9 stores in modbus
registers starting at 0 as 32-bit floating point numbers
(two 16-bit registers per value).

When mb2hal reads the two registers (function 3), it
does not do any conversion.  I get exactly the same number
in the "float" pin as the "s32" pin.  The first register appears
to be the high word, and the second register appears to
be the low word.

I believe I need to concatenate these two 16-bit registers
to recover the 32-bit float, and then convert the 32-bit
float to a 64-bit float, which is what HAL uses.  Are there
any components already existing that would help with this,
or do I need to write a new component?

As someone else suggested in another thread you can give a try at a python
module called modbustk (modbus toolkit) .
I've tested it on TCP/IP and is a powerful,complete and documented python
module.
The serial line is supported as well.

 I don't know mb2hal at all, but looking at mb2hal_HOWTO.ini i see
 there's a MAX_UPDATE_RATE for each transaction.  Maybe you could reduce
 the update rate of the transactions you don't care as much about?

 If you need finer control over when reads and writes happen, you're
 probably better off writing a custom component (in C or python or the
 halcompile language) that does exactly what you need.

[Emc-users] Mb2hal?

Is it possible to make Mb2hal only make reads and writes of the nessisary 
registers, rather than all the registers used all the time? 

Just curious. I am using Mb2hal to control 8 VFDs on a gang router, and the 
slightly awkward way these drives must be addressed causes Mb2hal to have to 
make a lot of seemingly unnecessary reads and writes. 

Each drives registers must be addressed individually (can't send one write to 
all the drives). To oporate the drives, I have to write to 3 different non 
consecutive registers, and read a 3rd block of 6 registers, all of that times 8 
drives. I am pretty sure the 3 writes, do not need to be repeated, more than 
occasionally if at all. The read does need to be done regularly. 

The 3 reads are: 
writing 0 to register #48 - to unlock the drives mb control (only needs to be 
done once, or if serial link is lost) 
writing to register #1 - to start/stop the spindle (only needs writteen tp when 
changing state) 
writing to register #40 - to set the VFD frequency (only needs written to when 
changing the speed) 

The read is : 
reading registers #24-32 (this has to be read at least every 10 seconds to keep 
the drive unlocked (see the first write) also contains all drive status info. 
I don't think all of these would need to be read every time but, it is easier 
to do 1 large block than to pick and choose.

Is anyone successfully using mb2hal since the revision of master streamlining 
the modbus stuff? I have an install of master (I was using for testing) from 
before this where libmodbus3 had to be installed separately that is working but 
when I went to install the new on the pc I intended for the machine, I can't 
get it to work. Mb2hal is installed and appears to function, I just can't get 
it to actually communicate with the drives (using the same setup and hardware 
that works on the other pc).

Hi there, i'm the guy who changed the libmodbus usage in master recently.

I confess i have never run mb2hal, so it's possible i broke it somehow 
and didn't notice.  However, the changes i made did not touch a single 
line of the mb2hal source code, i only changed how mb2hal gets access to 
the libmodbus library, and possibly which version of the libmodbus 
library it uses.

Which platform were you running on when things were working?  Please 
report the distro and the installed libmodbus version.

Are you using the same modbus target (slave) in both the working and 
non-working situations?  Same cabling?

Apparently, in my frustration, I posted to hastily.  When I was trying to get 
the new config to open a few days ago, I must have disabled my modbus to hal 
section, and forgotten about it.  Going back to it the next day with a fresher 
mind helped.  I removed the comment mark and now it worked (sort of).  I am 
still having a lot of communication errors, but that probably isn't related.
