I can recommend Vectric VCarve Pro, but it is expensive for what it is. Needs
to run under Windows, but will output LinuxCNC-compatible code. Ask for a
LinuxCNC or EMC2 post-processor, if there isn't one on the menu.
I use it regularly for all sorts of jobs. Used it this morning for text
engraving.
Cut2D is cheaper, but might not have all the facilities you need for the job,
depending on your design.

This simple copper-zinc alloy, historically called commercial bronze,

If you know of a place to get this material less expensively (or in smaller

Hi,
the problem with a actual photography is, it will not look good
(realistic) if you just convert it into gray scale, interpret this as a
height field and turn this into a relief using your mill.

You would need a real high field, representing the 3D surfaces in the
scene, than compress this in a suitable way down to the depth of a
bas-relief and mill this.

This process is one of the research fields I'm working on, main goal is
to simplify or automate the processes of creating bas-reliefs as
illustrations for blind people.

Things would be easy if you had several photos showing the same scene,
but take from different points. In this case you could you software like
Agisoft's PhotoScan [1] to reconstruct the actual 3D surfaces and a mesh
modeller to compress the depth later.

In case you could provide the image I'd be happy to load them into
PhotoScan an see if I can get a usable result.

See you
Flo

PS: PhotScan is relay cool and super cheep, 180 USD and only 60 for
educational use.

Doug:

I admire your project.

For my son's grave we had a plaque cast at a foundry---all text plus
university and fraternity crests---but elsewhere in the cemetery I've
seen a few plaques like you describe which don't appear to have been
cast. I don't know who did them. Some plaques in the cemetery haven't
weathered well (or maybe just not as I would wish them to) and I notice
bird droppings are deleterious so try not to provide perches above the
plaque. Mind the means of mounting. You don't want to set up an
electrolytic cell accidentally.

I don't know my alloys. If I were selecting for a memorial plaque I'd
want to make sure (1) the weathered patina will be acceptable and (2)
any care and maintenance necessary to maintain the patina is understood.

Kent

Hi Doug

I will send you the image tonight or tomorrow night.

Sorry for being unclear, but I can't do anything with just _one_ image.
The reconstruction of a high field from a single image can't be
automated (at least to day) in general.

The only think I can do it following your approach, interpret the image
as a height field, generate C-Code and simulate the result.

A general personal comment: I'd prefer a stronger
transformation/abstraction of the image than milling it as a relief: E.G:

  http://goo.gl/EPYeL

You could also use lines and change the depth of cut to recreate the
image as shadow.

Might still be to simple uses 5axis machining it'd be nice to tilt the
holes in a way that time image is only visible om certain point of view
or under certain lighting condition.

  http://goo.gl/nKVX2

This is 3D Printed, but could be milled as well.

Or mill/grind a free form lens projecting the image, if the sun shined
down in the right angle:

  http://lgg.epfl.ch/caustics

(Sorry for teasing, but the software is not published.)

See you
Florian

Hi Doug;
I am the EnRoute trainer and I do this type of work all the time with
customers, sign companies, and foundries. EnRoute has a nice set of tools
for this, but no need to spend 8K on a one off.

Send me the file and I will convert it into Gcode for you. I can even do
the typesetting as a 2.5 D engrave over (or around) the image. All I need
is how large you want the image to be and how deep you want the relief to
be. Generally these are cut with .25 or .125 ball mills, if it is a deep
relief I can set up roughing passes too, but lithopanes are usually better
in a low relief .25 thick.

Feel free to contact me off list.

Hi, I am wanting to make a plaque for a memorial bench for a friend who
recently passed away. the plaque is 3x5 and I want to cut an image into
 bronze.

This is a one-off so I don't want to make a huge investment in software. I
have a CNC machine but would also be happy if any of you on this list has
the capability and can make if for me.

Please let me know if you are setup to do this and I will send you a sample
of the image, or if you have recommendations for software that I could
use/purchase that is not too expensive and LinuxCNC compatible.

 Thank you,

 DougM

Great, Thanks Tom, I'll send you the image off list as soon as I have it.
It will likely be the .187 bronze from McMaster.

Kent, I am sorry for your loss - the woman the plaque is for was my
girlfriend so I know a little of what you went through. In this case it is
a bench, so the angle of the backrest will be sufficient that the birds
won't be able to get to it and it won't degrade too quickly. But I can
always replace it at a later date if necessary.

Thank you everyone,

DougM

 Hi Doug;

That is a neat one. A bit like real versions of Escher's designs that only look
properly wrong from a specific viewpoint. Another one I've seen is a sculpture
of a tree that casts a shadow of a star of david when set the right distance
from a wall and light is shone through it from the right angle.
