And you would have thought correctly. Trust me, this guy is WAY outside
any corporate environment.

Thankfully Enigmail has a "Never" option for PGP/MIME, on a
per-recipient basis, so Mr. Brunschwig has done great work in a very
tricky domain.

[Enigmail] Set Owner Trust missing from menu

I fiddled around some more. This time I SIGNED the key, telling a lie
by saying that I had checked it very carefully. Then when I
right-clicked on the key the "Set Owner Trust" option appeared under
"Sign Key" where it usually appears for all other keys in my key ring.

I'll probably try deleting the key and importing it again to see if I
can establish a well-worn groove of behavior for newly imported keys.

I believe that 'PGP Tray' is part of Symantec's PGP email encryption
software. Either that or it's a very old version of the PGP software. I
vaguely seem to recall that PGP Tray was part of PGP Desktop before
Symantec bought it. But that was a very long ago.

As far as I am aware, up to date PGP from Symantec can handle PGP/MIME
but I would have thought that virtually no one outside of a corporate
environment would be using this nowadays.

The answer is go into Enigmail Preferences, Send Options, and under "To
send encrypted, accept" click "All usable keys".

It still begs the question of why I can't Set Owner Trust on a newly
imported key. My guess is that I myself do not "Own" the key, whatever
that means. As I mentioned, I still CAN set owner trust on keys I've
already had imported for a long time, just not this new one I imported
several minutes ago. The right-click option simply does not appear on
this one key.

[Enigmail] Can't set Owner Trust to "Ultimate" on an imported key

2018-09-07 Thread Patrick Chkoreff
Whenever I import a new key, the only way I can ever encrypt to it is to
first go into Key Management and set "Owner Trust" to "Ultimate". I
just now imported a key and when I right click on it, I see no menu
option to set Owner Trust. I do see the option on keys I've already
imported.

So, when I import a new key, how can I make it so I can encrypt messages
to that key? I've never had this problem before.

What mail client is Bob using? The first message part header you
quoted[1] is correct for PGP/MIME which I would have thought any modern
mail client should be able to decode.

Footnote:-
1: If this is the message part header (which you quoted)

Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="encrypted.asc"
Content-Description: OpenPGP encrypted message
Content-Disposition: inline; filename="encrypted.asc"

then this will be in the main message header:

Content-Type: multipart/encrypted;
 protocol="application/pgp-encrypted";
 boundary=""

OK I think I figured something out. I went into the Per-Recipient rules

MIME-Version: 1.0

My Enigmail menu when composing already shows this option selected:

  * Protocol: Inline PGP (auto)

I just sent myself an encrypted email and I still see the "Autocrypt"
header.

I even went to Account Settings / OpenPGP Security and unchecked the
option "Use PGP/MIME by default". Made no difference.

I guess this big "Autocrypt" header is just the New Normal and I'll have
to tell my Stone Age command-line friend just to deal with it. I myself
have tried using gpg from the command line, but all the copying and
pasting just offends me. I guess I'll just have to live with this
"Autocrypt" header thing, whatever that is.

That's great to know, thanks for the info. In the heat of
experimentation I didn't bother to look up "autocrypt". Maybe that is a
good idea, cuz the uptake on PGP has been rather thin.

Wow it took me a while to figure out what you meant by the Autocrypt
"Tab", because Thunderbird shows those tabs as just plain text. I
finally scanned the preference page line-by-line and saw this text:

  Message Composition Autocrypt

Turns out "Message Composition" and "Autocrypt" are separate clickable
tabs, not just text. Well I'll be dog.

Anyway yes that does work, I can uncheck Enable Autocrypt and sure
enough it disables it. But now that you've explained to me what a
wonderful and promising feature this is, with the prospect of bringing
secure email to the masses, I think I'll leave it enabled. Thanks Florian.

Autocrypt sends your (automatically generated) public key in every mail.
If the receiver also supports it it will automatically encrypt all
messages to you. If the concept/implementation is a good or bad idea -
well, let's say there are different opinions.

If you just want plain and simple PGP you should be able to disable this
behavior using Account Setting -> OpenPGP -> Tab Autocrypt -> Enable
Autocrypt

On second thought, it really bothers me that even when sending a plain
text email, the email includes a big "Autocrypt" header. Why would
Enigmail insert that for a PLAIN TEXT email?

  You can use 'Inline PGP' either from the Enigmail menu in the mail
composer. You can also set it via a recipient rule to avoid doing that
every time. You can also disable 'Use PGP/MIME by default in the
Account preferences, in the 'OpenPGP Security' tab.
  PGP/Mime is better suited to handle e-mails with attachments,
non-latin text, weird formatting (long lines, nested quotes, etc.) and
non-plain-text messages (e.g. HTML formatted).
  As always I might be wrong.

  P.S. The developer of Enigmail is Patrick Brunschwig, it was amusing
to see a question here signed just 'Patrick' :)

[Enigmail] Can Enigmail be configured to send simple PGP?

2018-09-07 Thread Patrick Chkoreff
I recently sent an encrypted email via Enigmail to a friend who does all
his crypto from the command line using gpg directly. He remarked that:

> I got your message. However, it was sent as an encrypted
> attachment in a blank MIME message. The message was not
> marked with the property "encrypted."

I did a View Message Source on the message and saw a lot of headers and
such which suggest that Enigmail is not simply encrypting the message,
the way I would do manually with a command such as:

gpg -o - -e -r fri...@somewhere.com -r p...@fexl.com -a

In the message I saw elaborate headers such as:

From: p...@fexl.com
Subject: test
Openpgp: preference=signencrypt
Autocrypt: addr=patr...@absolutefundadministration.com;
prefer-encrypt=mutual;
 keydata=
 xsFNBFVTu9wBEAD3HrqNmAU5TPesso2t7QG+bq/Y9Brz0X...

And this:

Content-Type: multipart/encrypted;
 protocol="application/pgp-encrypted";

And then FINALLY this:

-BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-

hQIMA6Lhji0Goz+pAQ//RxnH969Jij+H9eupX698NC//p1PWVxDD2L9l0nruAKwz
...

-END PGP MESSAGE-

I was hoping there was a way for Enigmail just to compose a plain
message with nothing but the "PGP" block, and no "Openpgp" or
"Autocrypt" anything at the top.

I actually tried disabling Enigmail "for this identity" entirely, and
just doing the message manually, but that only worked for my default
identity. If I chose a different identity, Enigmail inserted those
Autocrypt headers even when I was sending a plain text email!
