I haven't seen this yet. could you try disabling plugins one by one to

(in Settings - 'Launcher' - 'Evrything' - Plugins Tab). I suspect
that it might be caused by efreet as it now uses a dbus daemon to get
Application items.

hmm, ok. currently not sure how to remote debug this issue.. do you
use the efl release or svn?
maybe log of strace or valgrind --tool=callgrind running e might be
useful if you know how to get it :)

this sounds like a different issue than what I've had but most likely
also related to e_xkb. If you want to try you could disable it by
running this in ~/.e/e/config/_your_profile_/ while not being logged
into e:

 eet -d e.cfg config $21 | sed -e '/^.*E_Config_XKB_Layout/,+5d' |
sed -e '/^.*xkb\./,+0d' tmp eet -e e.cfg config tmp 1

The fix (for me) is pretty simple. I turn on the numlock and that seems to
 make everything work again.

After running for awhile (minutes), some of the keys on my keyboard stop

I've tried two keyboards as well. Everything works great under Kubuntu.

  Any ideas?

e17 does modify X's keyboard settings for while. I've also seen the
issue with loosing keys when using e with my heavily modified xmodmap.
Try to delete all key bindings and reassign the ones in use.. On my
TODO is to add an option to fully disable e's xkb handling.

as the menu could be larger than maximum X window size or rather

ok, found the cause: lid was bound to 'System Controls' which grabs
input and is hidden behind desklock. anyway this is not default
config, but still should be fixed somehow. i.e. dont allow anything to
grab input while desklock is active.

while I'm at it: 'Processor' should probably not be an assignable ACPI action :)

possible to use edje_entry in evry, forwarding key events to entry and
reading its content back for search. Any suggestions? (asking the

E17 has its own tiling window module

 You can activate it in:

 Menu - Preferences - Modules - Core - Tiling

I tried it for some time... but I'm used to the normal method

I activated it as well, but either I'm missing something crucial, or
it simply doesn't work, because I noticed no difference at all. On
top of that I completely failed to find any documentation on how to
 use it.

iirc tiling is enabled in the config dialog in window settings by
setting the number of columns/rows greater than zero. the module also
adds a few actions that should be bound to preferred shortcuts. still
it is imo no replacement for a tiling wm yet

No history editor available, though there are some keys documented for
'cheat sorting'
http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/Gadgets/Everything

or you can extract, edit, and recompile:
eet -d ~/.e/e/config/_profile_/module.everything.cache.cfg config evry.txt
for the more advanced, but nothing in between

It's not like me to be so brief. But...

work daily using Eclipse to code and I often have window focusing
  problems. For
java I have setup to use Sun's java
  (/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java).

I do have the GNOME Settings Daemon and a number of other Ubuntu stuff
  launched
on startup, namely just to get the GTK windows looking right in
  addition to the
network and proxy pieces working correctly. There is no ecomorph
  running or
compiz. Mouse focus is set to click to focus.

I really like e17, but the conflicts with Eclipse focusing is getting
  harder to
accept. I haven't been able to fully list steps to reproduce yet, but
  some of
the symptoms I have are as follows:

1.) Edit window looses focus (greyed out). If the text buffer has
  changed it
won't allow me to save. File context Save All is also disallowed
  even though
the buffer shows change. To save the file I have to close the tab for
  the file,
which will then prompt me to save the file. I then have to dig through my
  project to reopen the file.

2.) Select text in an editor for a file, find and Replace window (I
  have mapped
to CTRL+F) when invoked will appear but the editor has lost focus so
  the Find
button will be greyed out until the editor window is selected and the
  Find
  Replace window is reselected.

3.) When debugging, the thread stack doesn't always allow switching a
  thread
  (seems to ignore the click).

On a side note, Mono (debugger) also will crash when hovering over a
  variable in
the watch window. A tooltip usually displays extended values of the
  variable
  (like a full string).

Not sure what else I can do to help, but I will try to see if I can
  get the
  issue to be reproducible.

For the record, I do experience similar problems, which disapear when I
switch to Gnome, so it really seems to be a window manager problem.  The
point 1) above is really annoying for me.

I use E17 from trunk with easy_e17.sh script on a Debian Sid machine,
with an Eclipse 3.7.1 and a Java 7 (openJDK) JVM.

I don't know how I could help solving these issues, but if I can help, I
 will be glad to.

i'm going to give something very non-positive here now. look for mentions of
the word java in e17's src. and then look for the swear words right near it.
here is the reality of things:

java's awt is built to emulate a windows style focus and behavior world.
having read some of its x11 layer code, it looks like it's written by some
junior programmer with little to no idea about x11. it tries make a x11+wm
world appear like the windows world. reality is that this is nigh impossible.
and doing so to work across wm's needs high levewls of skill, knowledge,
experience and needs care and effort. java has code (i've read it before)
SPECIFICALLY to detect a range of window managers and work around them, do
weird and wonderful things in each situation, and try all sorts of tricks to
 get
things to happen that it wants.

fact is that java doesn't respect icccm/netwm/x11 correctly and does hacks to
get its write once, run anywhere to work. i gave up working around java a
long time ago. i'm down to not really caring anymore as i've sunk 100's of
hours of trying to find bugs in e only to find it's java being a dick. i
have little patience or time to bother anymore.

patches (that don't totally screw e17's src) accepted. :)

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=59639

seems like a eclipse bug with focus-window-under-mouse, should work
when setting e's window focus to click-to-focus. I'm also currently
not in the mood to fix this. But maybe I'll look after it some day.

Regards,
Hannes

the buffer shows change.

I meant 'work around this'... I guess a 'focus mode toggle' button
gadget would be the best solution

 Hannes

This no longer works. I've also tried toggling E17's Settings == Apps
== Desktop Environments == 'Start GNOME services on login'. This
doesn't work either. I get the default Gtk2 / Gtk3 theme, which looks
 like arse.

I can use a tool like lxappearance to set my ~/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and
~/.gtkrc-2.0 ... but this doesn't seem to work for Gtk3 apps ( it does
for Gkt2 apps ), and also it's not in sync with what I've selected under
 Gnome3.

Is there some trick to getting theming of Gtk2 Gtk3 apps working by
 using gnome-settings-daemon?

yes, there is an option in look-applications-'enable settings
daemon' which makes e17 manage xsettings. it needs to be disabled to
make gnome-settings-daemon work. Maybe it would be good to add the
option to use gnome-settings-daemon to that dialog (and graying out
the other settings when enabled) to avoid confusion.

 Thanks.

this seems to be a bug. do you mean fullscreen windows or maximized

add an engage instance on the second screen. maybe one could add a

thats how it works currently

as jeff said - patches welcome. xsettings is something gtk/gnome uses

glueing it into all the right spots and adding a few more config vars

I know how to set a keyboard shortcut, I just do not know how I can
 connect it to run everything.

The action is called 'show everything launcher'

Also, can I have somehow an digital and not an analog clock in the shelf?

with current svn you can change the clock to digital mode. otherwise
there is tclock module.

BR

 Thanks!
 Nathan

ups, Terry send me a direct message so i only directly replied to him ...

ah right, Ubuntu doesn't provide the tools for that.. so in order to
build it he will need the build-essentials package which installs
 the necessary development tools.

However as raster said current e17 builds provide such a clock so
well, unless there is no other way, being up to date with it is
 advised

Unfortunately there is still no ppa for e17 snapshots, but being up to
date with e is not that hard either, see
http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/Installation for a guide.

Shelves that are suppose to not let windows over lap them should never have
windows over lap then. Regardless of if the window state is set to smart
 expansion or fill available space.

Ok, I guess one part is a problem with initial placement of windows
that are larger than the available space without overlapping
shelves(useful geometry) and the other is a bug in fill policy that
it does not take non-overlap shelves into account. For the first one
could resize initial window to be within 'useful geometry' though not

Re: [e-users] E Built in Compositing Performance is Poor

2011-03-19 Thread hannes.janet...@gmail.com
2011/3/20 Jochen Schröder cycoma...@gmail.com:
This discussion actually reminds of something I have been meaning to
report for quite a while. I have a desktop system with a low end radeon
card, and a laptop with integrated intel card. On both systems I'm using
software engine for composite, because it's significantly faster than
GL, however when I watch videos (either through vlc/totem or flash) in
full-screen they become jerky, not terribly but just enough to notice
(I'd say a frame rate of ~15-17). Checking composite full-screen does
not make any difference at all. The videos run fine in Gnome with
 composition enabled. Any ideas?

If Gnome is using OpenGL for compositing this is probably faster than
software compositing in e17.
Does texture_from_pixmap setting work with comp module?

 Cheers
 Jochen

It seems to depend on the type of nvidia card you have. I had a T61 with
nvidia card NVS140m with 128M video ram. Composite would be decently fast
for a while, but gradually get very slow after a couple of hours. The
slow-down could be hastened if I dared to run any video via vdpau, or
restart e. ecomorph used to run fine for a while, but eventually get slow
 too (in about a day).

I now have a different laptop with nvidia 310M with 1G video ram. composite
is really fast in this. The card seems able to run without any slowness,
tested for over a week. Restarts of e or playing videos via vdpau has no
 slow-down effect.

The difference between the above two systems was so stark that I believe my
earlier graphics card (or the driver) was just not up to the mark. Also,
probably composite is more taxing and unforgiving on your gpu than
ecomorph/compiz (raster can confirm perhaps?). Eventually, the nvs140m
graphics card died suddenly in the middle of playing a video (the infamous
nvidia hardware problem). This also leads me to believe that the hardware
was not up to the mark.

raster has always claimed that composite was smooth on his system (that too
with a dual screen setup at high resolution). I presume he has a powerful
 enough and recent graphics card.

actually have a whole range off them. my desktop has the lowest end nvidia -
8600GTS with only 256m ram. laptop actually is the highest end (gt-330m, 1gb
 vid ram).

as such this slowdown issue is almost certainly some nvidia driver resource
leak. you will find that no matter how many times you restart the
 enlightenment
process, it will remain slow until an Xorg restart.

evas is the rendering engine for e17's comp module. that means it needs what
evas needs. evas needs a GLSL capable GPU. old GPU's just don't cut it and
drivers that don't support GLSL (properly and efficiently) will be poor. As
such a good driver that supports GLSL will perform equally well as compiz.
 just
the baseline support requirement for evas's rendering is higher than compiz
(needs newer card and decent drivers). As such all nvidia cards have done
 full
hardware shaders that are GLSL capable since the GF6xxx series. there will be
no difference between GLSL and fixed function on these level of cards and up
 as
all the fixed pipeline is implemented as shaders anyway. apparently the open
radeon drivers don't (properly) support GLSL shaders, so with ati you're
screwed unless you use the gallium drivers i understand. they can do shaders
right. fglrx (closed drivers) do do shaders right, but fglrx just cant
 properly
handle direct rendering + compositing, so texture-from-pixmap exhibits bugs.
nvidia handles this just fine. the intel drivers do shaders just fine on the
945GM i have and work just fine with e17's comp and speed is good. no
 resource
 leak issues.

you may want to try the newest nvidia drivers and combinations to see if
issues went away. jeffdammeth also suspects loose binding of textures may
trigger it, though compiz also can use loose binding (loose binding is a good
speedup for nvidia - or was). it might be interesting to disable loose
 bindings
on nvidia (see evas_x_main.c in the gl_x11 engine where it does
 gw-detected.loose_binding = 1 when detecting nvidia).

Ecomorph/other three-d run just fine, but E's built in compositing is just
 a
dog. It is lessthan smooth when changing desktops and it cuts the FPS I see
when gaming down to 1/3 of what it normally is. Is this normal or is
 something wrong with my setup?

you can set all screen options also with xrandr utility. if you found

Probably one of the many modules from E-MODULES-EXTRA that I am
using. Like I mentioned earlier, there are no problems if I use a
new clean config (with no modules from EXTRA).

that'd be the best thing you can do - disable modules u use from
e-modules-extra. they are, in general a major vector for bugs like
 this.

Or at least disable them all, then enable one at a time to see which
one is the problem, to help their authors fix the bugs.

Ok. I just tested this dbus - e thing, adding modules one after another
on a new account, with new config. After loading a new module from
EXTRA, I kill dbus-launch and dbus-daemon and then I restart e, and then
I exit e using System - Logout. Result: no segvs, except for one with
module places that occured only once, and that I couldn't reproduce any
time after that first time (sorry, no bt :-( ). Not even itask-ng
 triggered any segvs.

That error popup that dbus is not present actually comes from the
 notification module.

But all of the above are with a new config. And I think the segv's I saw
 earlier may have been because

  1. I have an old config in the main account. However, it seems
unlikely that a config may trigger a segv.

btw these strange backtraces can occur when some of e's structs
changed and one forgot to recompile modules using them.. happend to
me sometimes with modules that one loaded once to just try them and
then forgot about them.

  2. I had used some opengl game a week ago on that login (I tend to
remain logged in for weeks at a time). Whereas, this time, I had
restarted the X server (sort of forced to restart for some other reason)
and done all these tests on the restarted X server. Which means the bug
may be in the nvidia drivers themselves.

In essence, no bug in e. Kudos to e-devs :D

initial default action should be 'launch'. anyway to fix this for you you can:
select app tab select 'launch' enter. to make this default one
can cheat sorting by ctrl+insert when 'launch' is selected, see

dbus-daemon crashes or quits while e17 is running. It happened yesterday
that dbus-daemon crashed (or quit, not sure what happened) and here are my

  1. e17 was running quite fine, with no visible problems.
  2. restarting e17 would produce an error message that dbus was not running,
etc.. (don't remember what the error message was). But e17 would restart and
 run just fine.
  3. Quitting e17 using System - Logout would actually hang e17 with no
White box of death. The bt of e17 at this stage is attached.
could you check if it also happens without itask-ng loaded as bt hangs
in _ngi_*. just to make sure that it's not a third party module
causing trouble ;)

  4. Quitting e17 using Enlightenment - Exit actually succeeds in quitting
 e17.

Re: [e-users] opengl rendered background for e17 - was: edje hooks for ecomp/ecomorph

old friend, enlightenment, got some cool eye candy.  :-)  So I gave it a
spin.  And now I'm back on the wagon.

Anyway, I really like the effects ecomorph adds, but I hit a small snag.  I
got side tracked onto animated wallpapers and how they work.  I modded the
circuit.edj one (just moved stuff to the left) so my gkrellm didn't interfere
with the display.  Neat.  I saw that edje can incorporate lua, which gives me
the ability to open sockets and do interrupt driven things.

ecomorph does not draw the background. it is a window created by e17.

And there's the problem.  I'd love to receive data from the real world
(weather, ntp stats, gps position, latency stats, accelerometer, etc), and
render them with opengl to the wallpaper.  I'm thinking a field of grass that
bends according to the direction and speed of the wind, or a statue in the
sun where the lighting changes according to the orientation of the laptop.

So, is there any way to do opengl rendering with edge?  If so, can someone
point me in the right direction?  My internet searches haven't uncovered
 much...

you can render edje with opengl though you are restricted to what is
possible with evas/edje. you cannot use native opengl commands, doing
the animation you describe will be pretty hard with evas I guess. Best
way I can think of you could achieve an opengl bg atm is to use a
compositing manager, create the opengl bg in a separate window, layer
it below e's bg and make e's bg transparent. If you get the proposed
animation working I would look into the other parts :)

BR

 thx,

 Jason.

  Thanks again Hannes,

I may need you to hold my hand on this ... where can I find the 'code'?
Configuration files in ~/.e/e/config seem binary, rather than text
format. Since I am not a programmer I can't edit these with a text
  editor.

whether a text part listens to scale changes is defined in the theme.
 in data/themes/default.edc group e/widgets/menu/default/label. but
scaling is set there to one so it should work. if you use the default
 theme.

Yes, of course, changing back to the default theme and suddenly Scaling works
fine.  Decreasing DPI to 70 makes the menu fonts larger, however, what I'm
really trying to find out is:

isn't there an easy way to change the font size on another theme?

 like for example this theme:

yes, the maybe not so easy: extract the theme: edje_decc theme.edj.
change the theme group e/widgets/menu/default/label to include
'scaling: 1;' then run ./build.sh in the extracted theme dir. or
contact the author to update the theme.

Yes I know e17 is still under heavy development, so I can't
expect it to be completely stable. But I thought I should bring this
up even though I found a workaround that works for me.

And I know this could be a distro specific problem... But I don't think so
 because:

To quote from the Arch wiki:

 http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux

 - Arch provides non-patched, vanilla software; packages are offered from
 - pure upstream sources, how the author originally intended it be
 - distributed. Patching only occurs in extremely rare cases, to prevent
 - severe breakage in the instance of version mismatches that may occur
 - within a rolling release model.

However I am a multi-Linux/multi-boot kind of guy, who in each and
every distro I install, heavily depends on their package management
system to keep me out of dependency hel^Hck... ;-7

And e17 is definitely one package that I wouldn't even attempt to
 install by hand.

But of all my currently installed distros, Arch is the one that seems
most likely to install an unadulterated upstream package, rather than a
 distro specific {modified} version.

Thus I don't think the fact that the only e17 on my laptop that this has
happened to, is the one in Arch, automatically makes it a distro specific
issue. It probably only means the Arch e17 is more accurately updated...
At least that's mt best guess.

I'm not really sure what was the e17 version number that I installed to Arch
sometime since my mid March initial installation of Arch itself, but as
of now the e17 help about lists it as Enlightenment 0.16.999.063.
Prior to this recent pacman -Syu, e17's run prompt worked normally.
Afterwards it's become fussy what the first character I input into it is.
That is to say, I usually start opera via the run prompt and when I type o
 the
command history displays the last instance of the command And I can in fact
start opera. Yet I also use firefox {though I usually start that from inside
alpine}. The other day I tried to start firefox from the run prompt. But as
 soon as
I typed an f into the first character position of the command input field,
I got a pop-up error telling me that Enlightenment SEGV'd That also
advised me to compile everything with -g in CFLAGS So far, the the restore
button succeeds in restarting e17 without closing any open applications...
But of course firefox didn't start. I can start firefox from an xterm. And
I tested that I can type of into the run prompt without an immediate SEGV
But I can't type an f as the first character. I haven't tested the whole
alphabet, BUT I did find I can't type a command starting with b or / as
 the
first character either. Though just because I'm stubborn I can tell you that
 I can
start firefox [via e17's run prompt] with: ~/../../usr/bin/firefox (go
 figure)

I did say I've got a work around that works for me... Since I've also got
XFCE installed as a back-up desktop, I've reassigned the keybinding I used
to use to pull up e17's run prompt with, to /usr/bin/xfrun4. Which works
 just fine.

before you do that enable Everything module which comes with e17 and
make a shortcut for show Everything dialog. or just show apps
plugin in the same section. but there too: current svn will be more
fun ;)

Regards,
Hannes

I don't know if this is a known issue or a new one. But I thought I
 should mention it.

[e-users] Everything is empty! plugins moved to modules(for svn users only)

Hello,

The plugins for the Everything module which were before loaded
differently are now e-modules. If you have an existing config, you'll
need to enable them with the Modules dialog.

.. what about adding a ChangeLog dialog at least for the snapshot releases?

the issue with not connecting to tracker was fixed recently but I
guess it is not yet packaged. It should work for you either by
starting tracker before enlightenment or after restarting e.

if you have scrolling on middle + trackpoint, change the binding to
right button. imo it would be nicer to make this default. not sure if
this is some 'standard' binding for window managers though

Re: [e-users] Is E17 causing memory leak in X.org ?

2009-06-11 Thread hannes.janet...@gmail.com
hi,
for me the xserver used up to 500MB after one day running. I found the
trigger for X's leaking to be e's animated idle mouse
pointer. try turn it off. maybe you could file a bug for xserver if
it's the same issue.

 Hi

Lately I've been seeing huge memory consumption by the X-server and I've
started to suspect some unexpected feature in E17... I'm building E17 from
source, almost daily using easy17.sh script.

I write to this list because I guess people here are more capable of
saying if it is so or not. I consider myself uncapable of that.

I'm running E17 both at home and at work (and on my Freerunner :-) ).
At work, with ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card (RV630 [Radeon HD 2600XT]) with
dual DVI-connected displays, using the AMD/ATI fglrx driver (latest).

At home I have ATI Radeon HD3300 Integrated graphics on Asus M3A78-T mb
 using the opensource ATI driver.

The symptom of memory consumption is identical to both configurations and
shows up after 1-2 days of running. Restarting enlightenment does not
release any memory in X-server, instead I need to logout of X to resolve
that. Once X managed to own all memory, including virtmem (swap) so all I
could do was to recycle the PC (push the on/off button thatis).

Below you see the output of 'top', 'xrestop' and 'xdpyinfo' with various
info. Please let me know if I can provide more info.

Cool... Now I've been able to replace the old e_systray module! ;)

However I've tried to put it as a gadget of itask-ng and it has some

Who should fix this? The systray module or itask-ng?

 Thanks again!
