Hi
I don't see 'text/epub' in default application settings 'Default
Applications/General'.
Is it a bug or a feature?
Other question, would it be possible to group the apps in alphabetical
order?
Conditions:
Arch system
enlightenment-git
Thanks

that's for X, not wayland.
for wayland you have to get yourself 2 login sessions and just run
enlightenment_start from each.

OK, it seemed there was a problem... :)

I reported this bug here https://phab.enlightenment.org/T6606 but answer
doesn't satisfy me. I have no problem with Xorg, except with
enlightenment. I think this is a real bug affecting E22.
I tested enlightenment git version, it's worse: xserver crash freezes

we don't provide checksums.

technically just the https ssl cert should be enough to verify that the source
is correct. if the source (e.org) were compromised then the checksum could also
be compromised to match. if things were delivered over http (non-ssl) then a
checksum would help avoid a MITM modifying the tarball (but they could modify
everything in-flight including checksums too if smart enough).

Thanks for your explanation.

what is an "appimage" ? have you checked your ~/.xsession-errors or
wherever your login session stdout/error is being logged?

ok found it. never heard of appimage. kind of cool. but it seems broken.

Cannot open /tmp/.mount_7IZlPL/.DirIcon

that's what comes up in my .xsession-error log... it does very temporarily
create that /tmp/.mount_7IZlPL dir... that works. but beyond that i don't
know. it breaks after that. i can't quickly find out why... because stracing
makes mount fail (security since strace -f is needed and mount is setuid). i
tried using sudo/root do it and it screwed my filesystem (it hung - i kill
-9'd it and i was left with this dir:

 0 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 40 Jun 7 09:12 .font-unix/
 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_KdFykk/

that 2nd one there... the strace of the appimage is unkillable hung in a
kernel call... this sounds a bit fragile... but i have no details. yes it
works for me from a terminal. it doesn't work when e launches it. why? i
don't know. all e does is fork() and exec() (using ecore_exe_run() - you
can check the code). the app will inherit the stdin/out of e. it will
inherit the environment variables etc. (well ok ecore_exe also does setsid
() to create a new process group - but its pretty normal stuff).

appimage has issues though - legally. it seems to happily snarf in binaries
to make your app run (into a squashfs filesystem that is mounted that is
simply appended after the appimage launcher binary at the start of the
appimage) ... if this contains binaries of any gpl, lgpl or similar
software then you have to ensure you provide the exact source used for
building those too to comply with licenses (or make it available on request
etc.). it seems appimage totally sidesteps this legal issue... while it's a
technically working solution... at least in some scenarios... it seems to
have issues.

in fact the appimage runtime relies on inotifytools... it links to it (and
inotifytools has a library that's lgpl). thus just distributing an appimage
with the runtime at the front that's needed to launch your app requires you
comply with lgpl for inotifytools that is linked in. at least at a quick
glance i know this doesn't have to do with the technical problem... but
this project has legal problems... at least for anyone using it to
distribute their apps.

having a read of the src tho - it makes the tmp dir above, mounts the
squashfs image using fuse (if it fails you should get a notification - uses
libnotify). ... it seems to get that far... i can only imagine the mount has
something wrong (permissions, empty, ... something). the hard bit is
catching it... i know the dir exists as stracing the runtime launcher works
and i can see it successfully mkdir etc. ...

but i've been testing the subsurfacwe appimage... this is not current with
the current appimage src. it doesnt support the appimage args... if i try
the appimagetool appimage... it can't open the mount dir...

in fact... using the newer appimkages i see lots of junk mount dirs like
above:

 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_9ogv72/
 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_FTsltu/
 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_KdFykk/
 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_SzPX5k/
 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_TgorDd/
 ? d? ? ? ? ?? .mount_keqfkw/

every time i run the appimage (the appimagetool) i get a new junk garbage
directory... in fact it's almost like we have hit a kernel problem:

ls (the directory listing) reports the file as there - a directory... but
stat says ".mount_keqfkw".

hooray! we've found another kernel bug. at least that's what my stream of
thought is going to... the fact we can, from userspace, modify a directory
entry (add an entry to the directory pointing to an inode) BUT then not have
the inode exist... btw the mkdir works:

mkdir("/tmp/.mount_keqfkw", 0700) = 0

so 0 return code == success. the dir entry is there... fuse does something
really bad to this dir/inode... and it has to be at the kernel level to do

In your /home/user
1) create '.xsession' file, make it executable, edit it like:

#!/bin/sh
exec enlightenment_start

2) in /home/user create symlink '.xinitrc' which points to '.xession'
3) install 'xinit' deb package
4) in a console launch 'startx'

One wild guess from my side. You did a parallel make install (make -j

That can cause this. We only support parallel make but not parallel make
install. Please use a simple make install.

[e-users] E17 inadequate for graphic work

2012-12-22 Thread maderios
Hi
As it's said there

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=50CB3434.4020901%40gmail.comforum_name=enlightenment-users
now, it's impossible to disable dpms in e17.
Here 's the problem for graphic work like creating, editing photos, etc.. :
dpms turns off screen completely. When I turn on my (very expansive Eizo
professionnal) lcd screen, it must heat. It takes about half hour a
screen to get right and definitive colors like color temperature.
After dpms turned off screen power , so, I have to wait half hour to
get again right screen state...
The only way is to disable blanking all the time, which is not very
good for screen life
That's why I say E17 is now inadequate for graphic work.
If you need only web surfing or text, it's ok.

Greetings

With other WM and before with e17, you could choose : only blank screen

Anyway, you mail subject is quite alarming and have nothing to do with

I talk here about my work, images creating and editing. It's not a weird

 Thanks for any help.

if you don't want compositing... you'll have to go find another wm soon
enough. after e17 is out, compositing is going into e17's core and it will be
compositing ONLY. e18 will be compositing only. baked in from the very core.
when e17 sets up blanking, it's relying on its setup of screesaver/dpms values
as it uses these for things like dimming on idle, as well as compositor
effects. (when you set up a blank timeout of 1 min, dpms is set to start
kicking in at 5/6/7 seconds later (dpms has 3 stages)).

Thanks for your answer. I don't like so much some compositing effects
(tiring for eyes !) but I like e17, therefore, I set none in
composite settings.
Another point: X cursor stays on the screen when blanking.
Is there a way to avoid this ?

disable blanking. blanking enables dpms. its not optional.

Yes, I know, it's an old story here ... I prefer to enable blanking and
 disallow dpms.
It was optional in old versions. Sorry, but I dont understand where's
 the problem.

as best i know - monitors that couldnt deal with dpms died out maybe 20
 years ago...

It may seem strange but I've to use a crt monitor, that's why I need to
 disable dpms.

I use 2, 13 year old, CRT monitors that fully support DPMS. You would
have to have something that belongs in the museum to find someone that
doesn't. DPMS was originally created to mitigate the large power draw
and burn in issues with large CRTs.

 Hi
My old sony crt monitor supports dpms too.
I don't need and I don't want dpms, even for an other lcd monitor.
 Greetings

ok - so its not a technical issue. it's a person issue. well then... i'm not
too worried. in this particular case you are not interested in saving power
 and
imho that's sad because the world is in dire enough trouble with us humans
consuming it left, right and center.

I agree with you about world dire, that's why, for example, I heat my
home, I cook, I heat my hot water with wood since 1977. Biomass / wood
is neutral for global warming.
I didnt wait Kyoto and Doha. :-) Otherwise the best energy is
the energy that is not consumed = good heat insulation, if possible but
very important, consumption of local products/food, etc...

the screen is black. there is no content. the logical thing is to turn it off.
it's just power drain at this point.

I use an inverter which consumes continuously power. A PSU never
stops consuming too.
I think dpms may save screen life, perhaps, I'm not sure. The notices
diverge on the question.
Greetings

every crt monitor i have had since i had any pc does dpms just fine -

Mine, too. The problem is not there. I just want blank screen, nothing
else, no dpms.
I explained in my previous message about power, saving energy, etc...

it turns
off. and back on again once signal is back. there may be some oddities around
from way back (the early 90's or 80's) but e's memory requirements along would
put any machine from there out-of-scope to run e. on your average desktop i'd
say you'd need 128m of ram. in 96 my pc was a p120, did dpms and had 32m ram..
 which is far less...

so you somehow have managed the odd luck of having the worlds worst crt... or
one of the oldest salvaged from a machine much older than my first pc... :)

My hardware is recent: MB asus P8P67 PRO, 8 Go ram, intel core I7,
nvidia quadro 600/1Go memory. I have too an (expansive) eizo lcd monitor.

i repeat. your ecore HEADERs say i'm svn development. the code EXPLICITLY
has #if's in it for version checking you have a new enough ecore... i checked
it to make sure. your HEADERS provide symbols and at compile-time the symbol
 is
 found.

 #if (ECORE_VERSION_MAJOR  1) || (ECORE_VERSION_MINOR = 8)
 else if (e-atom == ECORE_X_ATOM_E_WINDOW_PROFILE_SUPPORTED)
   {
  bd-client.e.fetch.profile = 1;
  bd-changed = 1;
   }
 else if (e-atom == ECORE_X_ATOM_E_WINDOW_PROFILE_AVAILABLE_LIST)
   {
  bd-client.e.fetch.profile = 1;
  bd-changed = 1;
   }
 #endif

so 1.8.. or newer (1.8 is not out - its what svn will become).

since it passes the compile and linking... at RUNTIME an OLDER libecore_x.so
 is
being found and used. this says that you have an OLDER libecore_x.so... at
RUNTIME. either re-run ldconfig, or check you don't have multiple installs of
efl in different locations on your system (/usr, /usr/local, /opt/... etc.)

Thanks, e17 gamma works now
Effectively, I had to delete an old installation in /usr/local/e17 and
ldconfig...
I think all the same that it is possible to make live several
installations if the libraries versions are not too old.
Best regards

disable blanking. blanking enables dpms. its not optional.

Yes, I know, it's an old story here ... I prefer to enable blanking and
disallow dpms.
It was optional in old versions. Sorry, but I dont understand where's

As I understand it, you don't need what is in the trunk/IN-EFL folder on
subversion. The developers have just moved the old efl libraries (eina
etc.) to this subversion folder instead of deleting them from the tree
altogether. Probably they are there for posterity.

In your easy_e17.sh file, there should be no mention of eina, evil, eet,
evas, embryo or eo. These all need to be removed and replaced by efl. If
easy_e17.sh is still trying to pull/compile files for the old efl
libraries, then these are still listed somewhere in your easy_e17.sh script
 and should be removed.

In my old easy_e17.sh I had a line like this:
efl_basic=eina eet eobj evas ecore edbus efreet eio eeze e_dbus embryo
 edje azy ethumb elementary

 mine now reads:
efl_basic=efl ecore edbus efreet eio eeze e_dbus embryo edje azy ethumb
 elementary

Ok, thanks for your help, it works.

terminology uses about 4mb. i suggest you examine how you measure it
 or give
 more detail.

 Release testing (debian wheezy) 64-bit
 Kernel Linux 3.4.9
 Hardware
 memory 7,8 GiB
 Processor Intel® Core™ i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8

 I launched gnome-system-monitor then Terminology
 terminology resident memory= 50 MiB

Terminology Controls then I restart e
 terminology resident memory= 70 MiB
 memory= 38,0 MiB
 shared memory= 41 MiB
 virtual memory=383 MiB

generally actually used memory is resident MINUS shared memory. or that's
closer to reality. the BESt measurement you can do is a system one. the
 problem
is that this will include all system usage, so memory used for pixmaps and
compositing and the window manager also are measured. so let me do some
 measurements here.

 1. nvidia drivers on this box
 2. e17 with compositing (gl engine).
 3. ubuntu 12.04 base

run 1 xterm instance. difference in system memory usage (everything
 xterm+wm+x
 +etc.):

 4576kb

run 2nd xterm instance. difference in system mem usage:

 3072kb

to measure the system mem usage for 1 window the size of xterm, i ran one
remotely displaying locally so all costs are wm+x11:

 496kb
(that's pretty much about right - the xterm client window is 402x242
 pixels.
att 23 pixels of titlebar and 4 of bottom bar - the pixels alone for the
 pixmap
are 433kb, so about 64kb of overhead here and there per window).

to measure 1 gnome-terminal usage (difference in system mem):

 8916kb

 2nd gnome-terminal:

 3556kb

 so first instance of terminology:

 7192kb

 2nd instance:

 7516kb

ok - so a bit higher, but close. all of these have about 500k of
wm/compositor/x11 overhead for compositing. xterm uses less memory for the
 2nd
instance BECAUSE it has to use libraries like xt which e and efl dont use,
 so
these need loading once. same for the executable binary itself. once
 loaded
they are shared, thus the 2nd xterm adds less overhead. gnome-terminal is
special as it doesn't even start a 2nd process. it re-uses the first and
 just
opens a new window from it, but same applies to gtk etc. libs being now
 needed
 like xterm with xt.

 lets try urxvt:

 5700

 snd instance:

 5472

so here's the catch. terminology has at least 1 largish rgba image in its
 local
memory (the gradient shine) that will consume about 350-400k on its own. it
also keeps all fonts client-side (unlike gnome-terminal and xterm).

so my measurements put 1 terminology instance at about 6800kb (avg 7300kb
minus about 500kb for system overhead). if you use xterm you basically pay
about 2500kb per term. gnome-terminal costs you about 3000kb per terminal.
urxvt costs about 5000kb. this is with default setup of terminology (and
 xterm,
urxvt and gnome-terminal configured to use the same font or font size).

so let's do some work in the term. all these numbers so far are for fresh
 terminals at 80x24 default.

 let's have our workload be:

 find /usr/lib

that should now consume some memory in backscroll etc. - all terms set to
 2000
 lines backscroll history.

 terminology: 1016kb
 gnome-terminal: 460kb
 xterm: 2816kb
 urxvt: 1380kb

catch: gnome-terminal puts its backscroll on disk not in memory. this has
 been
raised as a security hold in gnome-terminal and dismissed by its authors
 as not
one. so it'll be consuming disk not memory here. but it consumes ram
 anyway,
 just less.

so... these numbers seem about right to me. base memory usage per app.
 system
(compositor/pixmap/x11/wm), etc. terminology does a lot more inside its
 own
process than the others in terms of rendering, memory buffers, image and
 font
data etc. terminology will need 8 bytes per char in the backscroll which is
pretty much what it uses (well 1250kb - but my bet is it has freed some
 memory
from init/startup and now recycled it for backscroll buffers - libc does
 this
as a normal part of operation). gnome-terminal is trying to stuff
 backscroll on
disk so this doesnt impact used memory (it does impact disk cache usage
 whcih
i didn't measure here). urxvt backscroll usage makes complete sense. xterm
 is
higher - it may be allocating more per backscroll char - eg 16bytes, which
would be overkill, but that's its decision.

so after you use the terminal for a bit, we have some backscroll too, our
 total
usage is more like (rough nummbers):

 terminology: 7800kb
 xterm: 5300kb
 gnome-terminal: 3500kb* (5500kb)
 urxvt: 6400kb

 * (scrollback is on disk so to be fair add 1-3mb depending on mem storage
 format, so lets' say 2mb).

 so

 Bonus extras, yep certainly. B-)

 before
you set dpms timeouts to the same as blanking timeouts and had both enabled.

so back to my original mail - WHY do you want to blank the screen and NOT have
 dpms?

Because I think turning video signal (lcd) off, then on, then off, etc,
damages the CCFL backlight. That's why I prefer blanking screen. But may
be I'm wrong...

you don't save any power. your screen is always on - maybe outputting
almost nothing, but it's on. it's consuming power.

I know it but, anyway, my power inverter is consuming always same power
until my power pc is off.

i don't get it. the gui
changed so you no longer can chnage it separately. this is the same thing
 gnome
and so on do - they don't give you a choice. it's dpms always if it's enabled
at all. i happen to agree that its overcomplicated and no point having 5
different sliders and checkboxes when 1 will do.

just disable enable screen blanking and screen will stay on with all your
content. :) you have a choice - screen stays on with content as-is, OR it
turns off after a timeout and you may choose the timeout. i see absolutely
no use (and total pain and confusion) in having separate blanking and pms
settings (where there were 2 timeouts for blanking one for blank and
another for cycle, and 3 dpms ones). it's just one now.

since e doesn't have any screensaver infra there is nothing else to do
here. blanking without dpms doesn't save any power - the screen stays on,
just with black. there are no plans to ever have any screensaver infra as
screensavers are on the out. they just consume electricity and generate
heat when no one is there.

 Hi
I never liked screensavers. They are useless. I always used blank screen.
I disabled enable screen blanking and unloaded screen modules then
 xset s 120
 Then xset q

 Screen Saver:
 prefer blanking: yesallow exposures: yes
 timeout: 120cycle: 5
 DPMS (Energy Star):
 Standby: 120Suspend: 120Off: 120
 DPMS is Disabled

All is ok, but after restarting E17
 xset q

 Screen Saver:
 prefer blanking: yesallow exposures: yes
 timeout: 0cycle: 5
 DPMS (Energy Star):
 Standby: 120Suspend: 120Off: 120
 DPMS is Disabled

So no blank screen after restarting E17
I think E17 disturbs xset. Is there a way to avoid this ?
To summarize, I want simply a black screen, by means of xset or E17, no
 matter.

correct. e will always set this - the module is only for the config GUI. e
still sets it. why dont u want dpms? the screen turns off. that saves power.

What I do not understand is that in the past, with e, I could set
blankscreen timing and disable DPMS on my PC. I have an old laptop, same
e revision, same settings with e : blankscreen timing and disable DPMS
work well... Strange.

eh? dpms doesnt turn on (ie screen turns off completely) ??? eh? wtf? it works
here just fine. the new dialog just sets dpms timeout to the same as blank
timeout - it also enables blanking and dpms with the same flag.

About 'the new dialog just sets dpms timeout to the same as blank'

I don't want both blanking and dpms but only blank screen.
Therefore, I went back to rev 74852. Blanking screen setting works now
independently.
I didn't find any other method.
