I didn't mention Gerrit. But ideally you want to see the issues in your

[equinox-dev] 4.12 M3 milestone week reminders

2019-05-19 Thread Daniel Megert
Hi Folks,
It's the milestone week - 4.12 M3.

Monday: Last day of development (and even then, no "big changes"). After
Monday 18:00 ET, no feature work or unrelated fixes are allowed -- only
regression fixes.
Tuesday: All-day test pass. Nobody should develop or fix anything.
Literally spend the entire day testing.
Wednesday: Fix day with a focus on fixing regressions found during the
test day (Tuesday). No unrelated fixes. Review and thoroughly test all
commits.
The last Wednesday build is the release candidate every team signs off on
Thursday.
The "New and Noteworthy" entries are due on Wednesday evening:
Git repo: ssh://git.eclipse.org/gitroot/www.eclipse.org/eclipse/news.git
Gerrit: ssh://git.eclipse.org:29418/www.eclipse.org/eclipse/news.git
Live website: https://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/news/4.12/
Thursday: Sign-off after re-testing, or at least confirming no changes
have been made to your component's code since the last time the component
was tested well.
Friday: Build is officially declared and made available.
The master branch stays closed until the milestone is officially released.
(That is, it is not enough that your component has signed off.)

NOTE: This is the last "normal" milestone. After that we will enter the
endgame. Endgame plan will follow.

What are the general plans here? I'd like to see the specific issue fixed
in a good way. Having the new default method on IProgressMonitor seems
like a clean approach. However, I tend to agree that this is a big change
(in terms of impact).

Are there any plans to have another major version? What are the main
concerns in that area?

But without I-builds this will be a "blind flight" for two weeks! If there
will be no builds but the master is open for development, we can end with
lot of failing tests after two weeks. We had many times issues where the
tests in *different* projects were failing but Gerrit builds were green on
a particular project with the change.

Please note
Monday: Last day of development (and even then, no "big changes"). After

regression fixes.
Tuesday: All-day test pass. Nobody should develop or fix anything.
Literally spend the entire day testing.

test day (Tuesday). No unrelated fixes. Review and thoroughly test all
commits.
The last Wednesday build is the release candidate every team signs off on
Thursday.

No new code changes can be made until the milestone is officially

Re: [equinox-dev] Vote for Committer status for Mykola Nikishov

2016-11-16 Thread Daniel Megert
> But if the platform is ok with that and you are happy to deal with
the consequences.

This is an RT PMC problem where the Platform has no say, unless we move
Equinox back to the Eclipse top-level project.

The problem is that p2 is not active enough anymore and patches from
people like Mykola sit around for weeks if not months. So, unless p2
(Equinox now) committers don't commit to review incoming contributions
in a timely manner then the RT PMC must come up with a plan to fix this.
This is the PMC's job as part of the EDP. At the Eclipse top-level
project we are currently working on a plan to fix our projects where
there's not enough activity.

I'm not an Equinox committer, but from what I've seen from Mykola I
would +1 his nomination.

Equinox will not export the annotation package (via Export-Package)
because it will lead to a bad practice of using Import-Package for these
non-runtime packages. Whatever the solution ends up being to get the
annotations on the classpath of the project, PDE must do so without
requiring the bundle manifest to declare a runtime dependency on the
annotation package (Import-Package or Require-Bundle).

I don't like that approach which leaves us with maintaining and shipping

Hi Peter,

I think it's possible for PDE to ship their own jar of the code. You can
simply copy the sources from Equinox. I think you still need a CQ, though.
It can be a re-use CQ for a subset of the original CQ. Might be easier to
jut go with a full re-use.

I've cc'ed equinox-dev because I think this topic may be interesting for
them, too.

however, in order to make these annotations available to external
builders, they would need to be in a separate jar (otherwise users would
have to place the entire bundle on the build path).

Would it be OK to extract that package from Equinox and provide it via PDE
as a separate JAR? Since this isn't new code contribution, do I need any
special permissions/process? Thanks!

Hi,

[...]
 But you mention that using the boot class loader as the parent class
 loader for bundle class loaders causes problems for Nashorn. I fail to
 see why that is.

I don't know the inner details but if you run this app

 package samplenashornosgi;

 import javax.script.ScriptEngine;
 import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager;

 import org.eclipse.equinox.app.IApplication;
 import org.eclipse.equinox.app.IApplicationContext;

 public class Application implements IApplication {
public static class SampleObject {
public SampleObject() {
System.err.println(I am:
 + this);
}
}
public Object start(IApplicationContext context) throws
Exception {
System.out.println(Hello RCP World!);

ScriptEngineManager mgr = new
ScriptEngineManager();
ScriptEngine engine =
mgr.getEngineByName(nashorn);
engine.eval(var SimpleObject =
Java.type('samplenashornosgi.Application.SampleObject'); new
SimpleObject(););
engine.eval(var SimpleObject =
Java.type('samplenashornosgi.Application.SampleObject'); var
SimpleSubClass = Java.extend(SimpleObject); new SimpleSubClass() {};);

return IApplication.EXIT_OK;
}

public void stop() {
// nothing to do
}
 }

With the default setting you get:

 Hello RCP World!
 I am: samplenashornosgi.Application$SampleObject@2f8dad04

Each RC corresponds to a test fix pass week (or two) according to the
endgame plan. If we rebuild an RC build, or also a milestone build, then
we add 'a'.

Sent by: rt-pmc-boun...@eclipse.org

Hello,

I have been trying to study the winrun4j Java project.

Notwithstanding, I can't go much further because the winrun4j project
depends upon the Java project: org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.

Notwithstanding, attempts to clone the git project only increase the
number of Eclipse errors in the Eclipse problems tab.

The git clone is only the binaries which makes the winrun4j project more
unhappy because it is looking for the source.

Is it possible to clone the equinox Java launcher with the source files?

Please advise, David.
