I've read that everyone on the planet could have their own IP address

IPv6 uses a 128 bit address. 128 bits allows
340282366920938463463374607431768211456 different addresses. There
are only slightly more than 60 people on earth today, so each
person could have more than 1e28 IP addresses.

This morning on another mailing list, I speculated that as soon as we
have microscopic computers, 1e28 IP addresses apiece won't seem like
that many.

Maybe someday your IP address will be your phone number all rolled
 up into one.

An IP address is needed for each network interface of each computer,
not for each person. For example, my laptop has both a wireless
Ethernet card and a (wired) Ethernet interface, so it has two IP
addresses.

djbdns is closed source? In what way? The source is published
 at http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/djbdns-1.05.tar.gz; are there use
restrictions that violate the Open Source Definition?

I would call it Closed Binary. It can't be redistributed in binary
form if it does not operate exactly as it was designed to. So to
distribute it in binary form, linux/unix distributions would have to
use /service, and /service can't be a symlink. At least that's my
understanding of the issue.

I probably should have said Unfree Software; i was thinking both of this
restriction, and on the restrictions against distribution with downstream
source modifications.

This is probably good.
However, the job announcements were sent to me as MS Word files

[EUG-LUG:826] My own, personal, IP

2001-04-30 Thread Jim Beard

Maybe someday your IP address will be your phone number all rolled
 up into one.

An IP address is needed for each network interface of each computer,
not for each person. For example, my laptop has both a wireless
Ethernet card and a (wired) Ethernet interface, so it has two IP
addresses.

You could have a server similar to a DNS where you query it with someone's
personal IP and then the spits back the IP of the machine that they are
actively
working on. Which would change as you moved around. I guess it would
basically be
an extension of the instant messaging craze. It would also be similar to a
universal
phone number, which some telco's offer. Where when someone calls that
number it gets
forwarded around (home, work, cell etc..) until you pick up.

[EUG-LUG:828] Matrox G450 DualHead Drivers

I am looking for some help on installing a driver for a Matrox
G450 DualHead video card. I have just installed Libranet v1.9.0.
This is my first experience with Linux and I am command line
challenged. I have two monitors and want to get them both
operating in Linux. I live in Cottage Grove and would be willing
to pick someone up in Eugene and drive them down here to help
with this.

Thank You

2001-04-30 Thread Rob Hudson

Hi John,

Possibly someone on our email list can help you. See our webpage for
details on how to sign up [1].

I personally have this card and have linux with it working on my
desktop at work. I can answer some questions and guide you thru the
process if you need help.

The order of things needed are:

1) Get the latest linux kernel and compile that with DRI and AGPGART
support. I can fill you in more on this later. [2]

2) Get the latest version of X (v 4.0.3) and follow the instructions
there on getting that working. [3]

3) Install the latest linux drivers from matrox.com. I can send you
also my X configuration file to get dual head working. [4]

Matrox.com also has good forums to help folks out too.

Bob hasn't asked yet (since portland announced their meeting already), but here's a

Netfilter and Iptables
Learn to configure Netfilter, the Linux 2.4 stateful firewall, to build a home or
business firewall or router and more. Stateful firewalling means simpler rule sets
that are generally more effective. We'll make a home firewall script with only two
