Install disc 3, that'll give you X11 (at least it did with 7B85, which is
the official release of MacOS X 10.3.. 10.3 server is 7B86.)

Thanks for the Terminal .plist tips. It's kind of aggravating how I seem
to need different keybindings when in BitchX or vim or kismet or... you
 get the picture.

Yes, it annoyed the crap out of me and I figured it was better to teach
Terminal.app to behave regarding my keyboard rather than learning to hold
down shift to get the right keys. If I knew the hex keycode of the Help
key, I'd bind it to insert since it's in the insert key's spot and frankly
F1 works as help in most things that support a help key anyway, rendering
the help key pointless - especially in the terminal.

I did just discover that there is a Tenebrae port, but it apparently locks
up and I looked at the code.. It's such a mess (it's basically unmodified
Quake 1 save for the OpenGL code) that I'm not going to mess with it.

This is awfully vague... What, specifically, is the problem you're
having?

FWIW, I don't use inkjet printers any more to output photos. Not
good enough quality... I burn 'em to a CD and take 'em to Costco

Re: [eug-lug]Gimp printing photos

2003-10-27 Thread Ben Barrett
You should make sure your printer is correctly configured before you
worry about application-level details like specifically printing photos.
You should be able to:
echo I'm alive | lpr
to print some text (use lpr -P /dev/XXX to specify printer, see man lpr)
or:
lpq
to see the printer queue.
You might want to fool around with redhat-config-printer since you're
using redhat! Once CUPS or gimp-print is setup, you should be able to
specify a nice driver which gives you most, if not all, of the same
controls for the printer that you see in your windows printer dialog
boxes... if there are multiple drivers, you might want to experiment to
find the one that works best *for you*.

Best of luck,

   Ben

[eug-lug]Host Security - EUGLUG Presentation Details

2003-10-27 Thread Jason
Hey List,

Here is a little blurb to shed some more light on the
presentation I'll be giving on Saturday (Nov. 1):

A Platform-Independent Approach to System Security

One-liner:
I'll be discussing the methodology I've helped develop
at @stake for implementing and evaluating host
security, regardless of operating system.

Problem Statement (for those who like these sorts of
things):
Most organizations use multiple operating systems
(i.e. Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc.), and there are
tons of tools available to help secure hosts (i.e.
Global Policies, Bastille Linux, SST/JASS, YASSP,
Titan). However, there is little in the way of
cross-platform guidance, both detailed and high-level,
for administrators who may or may not have any tools
at their disposal.

Anyhoo, I'll be covering the key areas that must be
addressed when securing (i.e. hardening, tightening,
locking down) a system. To prevent boredom and random
nodding off, I'll try to keep it lively with some
pen-testing (i.e. breaking in, r00ting, 0wnz0ring) war
stories that are relevant to each security area.

Given, the audience, I'll of course be talking about
these issues WRT Linux, but I'll also be addressing
Windows, Solaris, etc. And, feel free to bring any
random host, etc. security related questions.

Looking forward to seeing some folks there.

Thanks,
Jason

Yes, it is a fine codebase indeed! I had used it on my dual-booting
laptop about 1 1/2 years ago, but it was pretty unstable, still.
Locked up 'doze numerous times. I take it that it is working better
now?
And if I may, how in the world do you justify trusting that 'doze will
let tcpdump and libpcap do what they want??? As in trusting the kernel
and tcp stack, etc...

This sounds pretty silly. Why did these reporters waste our time
writing it up. I hardly call 200 to 40 website defacements war. The
one site they listed in the article is running iis4 and is the premier
arabic online music store. Big deal, so lots of sites have been found
running insecure webservers and all of the so called attacks are
simply website defacements.

One of the cracker groups says, One man can destroy a whole company
