I have been getting a fair amount of spam in my efn inbox that looks
like it is not being processed by the spam servers (no spamassassin
headers). How are these getting through, and how would I plug up that
hole? I'm considering spamassassin for my mail server and need to know
how to deal with the issues. Any spamassassin experts want to jump in
and give us a quick dissertation?

Thanks,

[eug-lug]Sidney Morning Herald: ACT Pases Open Source Bill

2003-12-11 Thread D. Cooper Stevenson
All,

From the Sidney Morning Herald:

The ACT Legislative Assembly passed the Democrats' Open Source Bill last
night, information from party sources says.

The bill was introduced in July by Roslyn Dundas, the member for
Ginninderra. Amendments to the same were suggested by a government
member, Helen Cross, and accepted.

The bill says that public bodies should, as far as practicable, consider
the use of open source software when procuring computer software.

Nice... so now Im hot, and holding grudges... I assure you ben, Im quite
calm. I dont think Im holding any grudges or anything, but then again, its
not like you've ever aplogized or anything either. I have noticed that
usually when you make a comment to me, its critical, an not really warrented.
why is that?
In your last messge, you had the oportunity to say, oh, I made a mistake,
thought you were talking about another member... but instead you decided to
get defensive (claiming you *did* ask for forgiveness), and you went even
further to by calling me hot, and holding a grudge. This is actually the
opposite of an appology isnt it.

In general, I think your a good guy, but I have noticed that you tend to jump
on even the slighest opportunity to complain or nit. Have I given you some
reasont to want to be that way toward me?

Because of the number of messages I'm rejecting to this and other
lists from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (and quite a few others @msn.com) I'm guessing
that yet another worm is out infecting Windows and targeting userIDs with
spam.

Perversely, I doubt any of these actually originate @msn.com, but
it's a nice, handy domain to blame the spam on. (Purely speculative, I
don't see an easy header to support this).

Obviously, all we need to do is convince ninety five percent of
the world's computer users to change operating systems to something not
creating such a lucrative (and vulnerable) monopoly.

Can we get back to subverting the dominant paradigms now?

I also get a large amount of spam that IS trapped by spamassassin. I
don't believe that my spam assassin settings have anything to do with
this, other than the fact that spamassassin is enabled on my account,
and has been since the very beginning of the efn implementation. All
other email I get at my efn address is marked by spamassassin one way or
the other (spam or not spam). As I mentioned below, there are No
spamassassin headers in the spam I am talking about.

I guess my complete question, away from any specific account is as follows.

Why would a spamassassin setup such as efn.org's completely miss 3-10
spam emails a day, where miss is defined as not process at all.

because it can be overwhelmed, if all three spamassassin boxes are
chugging away
and aren't returning an answer within 10sec procmail will just assume
spamd is unavailable and default to delivering the mail.

I'd like to try something like SPF
http://spf.pobox.com
because SA, while surprisingly good for an expert system, is not a
complete solution
to the problem of spam.

For a solution to work, it needs to be

1. standards based
2. unilaterally implementable (i can implement it and get some benefit,
you don't get the benefit but aren't actively harmed by it if you
choose not to implement)
3. not centralised (if I have to pay USD 300 per year to verisign just
to send email, I will share my pain )

this, other than the fact that spamassassin is enabled on my account,

other email I get at my efn address is marked by spamassassin one way
or the other (spam or not spam). As I mentioned below, there are No
spamassassin headers in the spam I am talking about.

I guess my complete question, away from any specific account is as
follows.

Why would a spamassassin setup such as efn.org's completely miss 3-10
spam emails a day, where miss is defined as not process at all.

I have been getting a fair amount of spam in my efn inbox that looks
like it is not being processed by the spam servers (no spamassassin
headers). How are these getting through, and how would I plug up that
hole? I'm considering spamassassin for my mail server and need to
know
how to deal with the issues. Any spamassassin experts want to jump in
and give us a quick dissertation?

Thanks,

My EFN account gets a ton of spam however. Ive had that account

[eug-lug]Linux at Lane CC

2003-12-11 Thread Ken Barber
Last May we had a thread on eug-lug regarding Linux classes at LCC. Beaker
had a great suggestion which has finally become reality:

I've always thought a Best of Open Source series would be of interest to
people. Many apps such as OpenOffice, The Gimp, and Mozilla run on several
operating systems - not _just_ Linux :J - and may have broader appeal then
 Linux-only apps.

It's taken months to get it approved, but I'll be teaching a best of Open
Source class at LCC Winter term. The descriptions of all of my linux
classes are here:

http://www.lanecc.edu/cont_ed/cont_ed/cc_menu_winter04.html#3

and instructions on how to register are here:

http://www.lanecc.edu/cont_ed/faq.htm

(hint: the website isn't easy. Best way to register is by phone)

Note, if you will, that I'll also be teaching an Introduction to Linux
class for newbies at LCC now. It will eventually be geared to people whose
workplace has switched to Linux... which should counter the M$ FUD that
goes, where will you get trained people to use Linux in your workplace?
But there might be some nonprofits out there who are already using it, and
this class will help these folks quickly get up to speed.

Of course, the Linux system administration class (formerly Red Hat Linux
System Administration) is also being offered. We plan to expand it to two
classes, basic and a second-level class, starting Spring term. I also
plan to have earned my RHCE, and possibly a couple of LPI certs, by then.

Finally, we're also offering a special Linux sysadmin class for the folks at
K12s who are in charge of keeping their computers running.

Please spread the word.
