[EVDL] EVLN: Tesla Drops Using 'Model E' Trademark

Tesla Drops 'Model E' Trademark
By Megan Stewart | May 06, 2014

[image] 2014 Tesla Model S Passengers Side In Motion

The newest Tesla model is in the planning stages, and while a name may have
already been assigned to the new mass-market electric vehicle, Tesla has
decided to change it up.

While even Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk often referred to the newest car as
the Model E, the company has decided against pursuing a trademark for that
name. This may be a good thing, just in case customers were thinking it may
be a fun idea to stock their garage with the Tesla Model S, X, and E. By
changing the name of the E, Tesla is opening up the possibility for a new
nomenclature altogether.

We may not know just what the automaker is going to call its latest electric
vehicle, but what we do know is that it will be roughly 20 percent smaller
than the current Model S, have an electric range of 200 miles, and be priced
in the ballpark of $35,000.

The model will be revealed early next year, and we have a good feeling that
the automaker has already decided on a name befitting the latest edition to
the lineup. Although Model E may have fit well with the idea behind the
first two model names--Model S and Model X-- we think that it's just too
generic. E for electric is anything but original. Source: United States

Re: [EVDL] EV Digest, Vol 19, Issue 19

2014-05-15 Thread Michael Ross via EV
Wire heating is very real - hence there are derating tables for selecting
wire gauge for an application - ampacity. 4% change in resistance over
10°C is significant Insulation severely derates copper conductors.

I am familiar with Allegro Microsystems Hall sensors and most are
temperature compensated. Hall elements change their response subsequent to
mechanical strain and thermal effects cause mechanical strain. They have
ways of stabilizing them.

 Jan Steinman via EV wrote:

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Peter, although ±4% for 90% of
the typical annual temperature change here isn't TOO bad! I'm guessing
temperature affects on battery capacity are of a similar magnitude.

Keep in mind that the wire also heats up from the current flowing in it.
 That causes additional errors.

There are meters that use copper wire as the shunt; but they include a
thermistor that senses the wire temperature, and corrects the current
 reading accordingly.

I think I like the hall-effect torus sensor better.

Hall effect sensors can be very good; but they too have their sources of
error. A classic problem with hall effect sensors is zero drift. (not
 reading 0 at zero amps).

Simply measuring current isn't too bad. The real challenge is to measure
amphours. Any zero offset causes errors to accumulate. An offset error of
0.1 amps on a 500 amp sensor (0.02%, or 1 part in 5,000) accumulates an
error of 2.4 amphours per day.

Re: [EVDL] Miles Remaining

2014-05-15 Thread Rick Beebe via EV
Jack's concern was that the meter might make a connection between frame
ground and the high voltage pack so he put the DC-DC in for isolation. I
did have that problem on the analog volt meter I used to have in the
truck so I put one in as well. However I don't have any evidence to
suggest it's really necessary for this meter. I haven't found any
continuity between the 12v power and high voltage connections on the
meter. But the DC-DC was only a couple bucks so it was cheap insurance.

 The EVTV diagram says Isolated 12v to 12v DC-DC Converter. I didn't
see anywhere else that the negative power terminal on the JLD404AH
cannot be tied to the COM terminal. And all my 12V regulated supplies
are common negative. I don't have a separate 12V house battery in the
lawn tractor. Are you using an isolated dc-dc converter in your truck?

Well, my system floats from the frame, but lightobject responded:

: The power of the JLD404 is isolated and the ground of the

: NOT want to common ground the power and the INPUT ground.
: Otherwise, the amp meter won't work and that is the pretty of the

So I guess it's off to ebay for an isolating power supply. I haven't
seen one yet that can handle 48V and output 12V, so it looks like
I'll have to put it downstream from my buck converter.
