(YOSHIKAZU TSUNO/AFP/Getty Images) ] When life introduces new conveniences, it usually also comes with new problems. Online shopping has been a boon for consumers—and cyber-thieves. Likewise, hybrid cars are simultaneously an ally of the environment and of battery thieves. The police in San Francisco have identified a growing trend of thieves tearing out the battery out of Toyota Priuses and presumably selling them on the black market, reported ABC7 News. It’s unlikely that the thefts could be attributed to random acts of vandalism. The batteries weigh 120 pounds, are connected to dangerous cables, and would take a professional mechanic an hour to remove. Yahoo Autos says that the outbreak of theft coincides with the expiration of the battery warrant for the first-generation of Priuses, whose owners are looking for replacements. Replacements can cost as much as $2,500 retail, but only $500-$1,000 on Craigslist. Dealers, however, have been warning car-buyers about the possibility of theft as early as 2008. That the batteries are mostly harvested from third-generation Priuses are another sign that the thieves are professional and organized. They would have to make in-house modifications to be able to sell those batteries in usable form to owners of the first-generation Prius. Battery thefts from hybrid cars have also been reported in Sacramento and New York. Ironically, the Prius vehicle is actually one of the least likely car models to be stolen in the United States. The silver lining is that battery theft could decline as the market share for fully electric vehicles grows, as the batteries for such vehicles will most likely be so heavy that it would be impractical for the thieves to transport them. For instance, the battery for the Tesla Model S comes at a hefty 1,200 pounds. What’s worse than somebody breaking into your car and stealing a purse or laptop? Try a thief ripping out the battery, rendering the vehicle into a sad, immovable magnet for parking tickets. That’s what’s happening with hybrid cars around San Francisco, according to this report from ABC 7. After talking with a recent victim of theft, parking garages, and a Toyota dealership, the news station concludes the city is facing a spike in battery-ganking: John Nashed’s Toyota Prius was broken into when he went to his parked car. “The passenger rear window was broken into and I look inside and everything is just a mess,” Nashed said. “It looked like a tornado went through.” A burglar made his way into the back of his car and stole the 150-pound battery that powers his engine. The car was towed to a garage for repairs. That’s when he learned there’s been a rash of Prius battery thefts in the city. “There there was an Allstate insurance adjuster there and he’s like, wait a minute, I actually have three cases that I’m working on. Same exact problem,” Nashed said. Via Twitter, Nashed says he hasn’t heard anything about the police finding a culprit and his insurance will be taking care of the repairs. Removing hybrid batteries is a tactical challenge. There must be either multiple thieves or one, Dwayne Johnson-sized baddie, because the items are heavy enough to shred untrained back muscles. Then there’s the risk of accidentally going up like the Fourth of July. Toyota warns that improperly tinkering

Instagram: https://instagram.com/betweensupercars/ ] We may be busy with last minute preparations for our trip to Stockholm for the European leg of the rally, but having a Tesla Model S P85D joining the grid is something we need to talk about. Hypercars, supercars, sportscars, opulent limousines, the craziest wraps, celebrities, you name it Gumball 3000 has it. If there is something the eccentric car event was missing it’s a proper EV racing along. They have everything from actors like David Hasselhoff and Dolph Lundgren to personalized outwear collection and timepieces, but if there was one game Gumball 3000 wasn’t playing that’s the eco-conscious gig. That is about to change, though, since there’s a Dutch team that decided to bring Elon Musk’s fastest toy out to play. Like last year, the 2015 Gumball 3000 is once again following a transatlantic route, although, in a reverse direction compared to that done in 2014. The flag will drop in Stockholm and end in the US, in Las Vegas. Apparently, the team is aiming for a world record attempt, driving the whole rally. Since Gumball 3000 is all about the appearances, they also had the EV properly customized. Besides the orange wrap, the Tesla Model S P85D also received a proper pair of Forgiato rims. However, what is really unique about this particular model are the Living Colors Lightning. Considering the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official range for the Model S Performance model equipped with an 85 kWh battery pack is 265 miles, we hope they made sure there are plenty of superchargers available on the track. The Gumball 3000 Rallu is more of an endurance event than a competition, but it doesn’t mean the EV doesn’t need a fast charging station to keep the pace. Ben Griffin took the Dual Motor P85D version for a spin - and ended up with a case of whiplash. How do you make the already rapid Tesla Model S even faster? Simple: Add another electric motor. Opt for the top-spec P85D (the Performance+ model is no more) and you get 691hp and all-wheel drive. Just let that sink in for a second. Suffice to say, this luxury cruiser can embarrass a number of supercars, plus it has up to seven seats, making it one of the fastest, most practical and most economical cars. But is doubling up worth the money? Design There is very little difference between the Dual Motor Model S and the now redundant P85+. The design borrows styling cues from a number of executive and luxury saloons, including those from Aston Martin and Maserati. That's no bad thing; the Model S is a real head turner. The interior is relatively sparse, which suits the futuristic feel of the car but will leave those used to top-end BMWs and Mercedes cars pining for a little extra luxury. It is, however, extremely comfortable and the 17-inch touchscreen used to control almost all car functions is a nice, unique touch. This particular version of the car gets a strip of Alcantara on the dashboard, making it less plasticy and more sporty. Comfier, more supportive seats, meanwhile, help remind you and your passengers you're sitting in something special. Practicality Because of the electric powertrain, the Model S P85D Dual Motor has both front and rear boots so you can fill it with a lot of stuff, even if the extra front motor in the Dual Motor setup eats away about a third of the 150-litre front trunk. Rear boot space is 744 litres, making it the largest in its class by some margin. With the £2,500 optional rear-facing seats fitted, the Model S becomes a seven-seater and, again, no other car in its class can make that claim. The extra seats are tiny and only really used by children or tiny adults, but fold them down and rear space grows to 1,645 litres, making it more spacious than just about any other
[EVDL] EVLN: What Attracted Them About Their 2015 Kia Soul EV, Leaf'rs say no
'Three Reasons Why I Prefer Nissan Leaf EV over Kia Soul EV' http://www.torquenews.com/1/kia-soul-fans-explain-what-attracts-them-about-2015-soul-ev Kia Soul Fans Explain What Attracts Them About the 2015 Soul EV By Armen Hareyan 2015-05-20 [image http://www.torquenews.com/sites/default/files/image-%5Buid%5D/%5Btitle-raw%5D/exterior_2015_kia_soul_ev.jpg ] What makes you want to buy or lease a Kia Soul EV? Is it because this electric car is eco-friendly, because of its uniqueness, looks or how it drives? This was the question posted on Kia Soul EV group on Facebook yesterday, May 19. What was surprising is that even several Nissan LEAF owners preferred Soul EV despite the fact that Kia Soul EV is selling under a decimal point compared to LEAF. Here is how people responded. Annick All of the above and because we are the Koulests of all cools ( Kouls = K for Kia, oul for Soul and s because we want to be a lot more if possible in the near futureLol) Genevieve All your mentions are my reason to want to buy a Kia Soul EV, but mostly, the range. The range and the fact that it look like a little truck (replacing an old Pontiac Vibe). Wyatt Not having to pay for gas! Kia Soul EV has low or no maintenance, no emissions, quick, air conditioned seats too. Pal I would trade our LEAF any time. The power needed for heating the floor in our smallest bathroom, could run the Soul for a year. Keith The Nissan LEAF has worked well enough for me for the last 2 years, but the Kia Soul EV has slightly better range (which would have made life easier several times in the past), and feels nicer than a comparably priced LEAF. And my state has an excellent tax break (that will be expiring in a month!) for buying an EV. Also, the BMW i3 isn't really suitable for my family (toddler), and I didn't want to deal with importing a Mercedes or VW from out of state. And the iMiev and Smart ED were out of the question. Richard I like the EV driving experience for going in and out of busy cities. And it's better than my Nissan LEAF was in a few ways including build quality and range. Judy I am looking for a commute vehicle that doesn't make me deal with the rapacious oil companies. Kind of the same reason I got a hybrid. But, I live and work in Silicon Valley and have a relatively high-mileage commute. I'd like to avoid a REX or plug-in hybrid vehicle. I'd like pure electric. Other answers of why people look to buy or lease a Kia Soul EV are look and range, not burning fossil fuel and being the second best EV after Tesla Model S. Are you attracted to Kia Soul EV? What in your opinion are the advantages of disadvantages of the 2015 Kia Soul EV compared to other electric cars in their comparable segment? [© torquenews.com] http://www.torquenews.com/1/three-reasons-i-prefer-nissan-leaf-over-kia-soul-ev Three Reasons I Prefer Nissan LEAF over Kia Soul EV By Armen Hareyan 2015-05-21 Kia Soul EV is a great looking electric vehicle with number of advantages, but why more people buy Nissan LEAF? There are number of good reasons, but here are three, shared by a LEAF owner named Lanky from CA. He writes that he really likes the Soul and on paper he feels that it's a better car than Nissan LEAF and many respects. But I chose the LEAF because of the following reasons, he writes, and lists three reasons for his choice. The first reason is the lack of nearby Kia dealers. It will take him to drive 45 minutes to get to the nearest Kia dealer that actually stocks Soul EV. This is, of course, closely related to the second and particularly the third reasons, discussed below. Expertise and prior experience are key for decision-making. If something goes wrong with his Nissan LEAF, due to the larger install base and time in the market it will likely be something the Nissan mechanics or service departments in the dealerships have already seen or encountered before.Since Nissan LEAF has already had few generations of production, it is very likely that their mechanics already know how to quickly fix an issue should something happen with the EV. When a new car enters the market, flaws related to it's design or technology crop up in its first or second years. This is true with electric cars as well, just like with any software. The third reason he says he chose Nissan is related to this aspect. The LEAF has undergone number of battery and other revisions including a trio of Drive Modes for all models - Normal, Eco-Mode and B-Mode - as well as new standard 17-inch alloy wheels for the SV trim level. It also includes a number of smaller fixes over the years. By now, all major bugs are already well documented and fixed. This is an important deciding factor on why people choose Nissan LEAF vs Kia Soul EV. The fact that I got a free L2 charger and 2 years NoChargeToCharge was also a factor in buying the LEAF, Lanky ads. As you can see these are important deciding factors when it comes to EV buying these days, despite its own

I'm not going to rent a car once or twice a week - too much expense and wasted time. The need is not rare for me. Even an EV that could do 70 miles on a charge would be inadequate. Make it 150 or 200 miles or it's not enough. And since I buy my vehicles used for under $10,000, that used EV should cost the same. Know where I can get one? Re: [EVDL] Design News: Why Aren't Electrical Cars Sales Better? It's the battery.
That is my experience too Peri, most people haven't thought much about it. They have very little awareness of evs, and the general perception is they cost more, take a long time to refuel, have less places to refuel, and don't go far enough to be useful except for in town. All pretty much true I think at this point for evs that cost less than $50k. You have to be willing to adapt, and most people are not, plus they tend to exaggerate some of those points. For example when I say my car has about 75 mile range, then tell them I can drive to which is about 30 miles away and back without charging they are surprised, indicating they haven't thought much about distances either. The Volt solves some of those issues but there is still higher cost and the need to install an EVSE. Plus today with instant everything, putting up with inconvenience is sooo yesterday. -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/Re-EVLN-Open-Source-Street-Legal-affordable-long-range-EV-4the-masses-tp4675590p4675777.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
