Re: [EVDL] Juicebox contactor problem

2016-02-01 Thread Rush Dougherty via EV
Actually Cor, when I tested the Juicebox I had a meter in the J1772 Power pins
and it showed 240vac from the first thunk to the 2nd thunk, when the contactor
closed and when it opened. And the easiest way the contactor can be tested is to
put power thru it and that is what the Juicebox does.

Best to all

I am sure that this test is done in software just to verify that
everything works, just like there is a special relay that will *create*
a GFCI event
just to test the detection of GFCI before relying on it.
Most standards actually do not specify what happens in transition (such
as power up) but if it is important - the software is open source so you
can simply comment out this test and if you want to still get the proper
test results, you do the test at the (first) plug-in event. Problem
solved.

I agree. It is common practice for a product to test its own safety
circuits automatically, one way or another. The standards were written
to allow and even encourage this.

Relay contacts can stick closed. If you want to be sure a relay opens,
then monitor its contacts and operate it.

I recall one product where it was vital that its AC output could be
turned off in an emergency. So we had *two* relays, with their contacts
in series (one switching one hot lead, the other switching the other).
The safety test circuit closed and opened one relay while measuring its
output to be sure it worked. Then it repeated this test with the other
relay. Only if both passed did it turn on BOTH relays to power the load.

[EVDL] EVLN: Bronko Bikes> metal and bamboo e-bicycles in San_Antonio-TX

San Antonio electric bicycle startup gears up to start cranking out hybrid

Antonio / COURTESY PHOTO
]

One local entrepreneur is banking that the hills of San Antonio are steep
enough to send bicyclists seeking for a speedier option while staying in the
saddle.

Former motorcyclist turned bicycle enthusiast Bryan Martin is the founder of
Bronko Bikes, a start-up targeting the hybrid bike market.

"I kind of think of e-bikes and electric vehicles today where cell phones
were in the late 1990s, they were becoming more ubiquitous, useful and
affordable," said Martin, adding that he missed the wind in his hair on the
way to work and started crafting an electronic bicycle in 2012.

Martin moved to San Antonio from Austin about a year ago and is working on
another prototype of an electric bicycle that combines a mountain bike-like
frame and dirt bike throttle on the handlebars. Over the next few months he
plans to finish a second prototype, launch a crowd funding campaign to test
the market and search for a business savvy co-founder.

"I do see it as an emerging market and this business doesn't have to hinge
on local sales," Martin said.

It costs about $2,000 to build an [Electric] bicycle from scratch that can
run up to 30 miles per hour. The selling price point is $3,000. Martin said
he plans to also offer electric bicycle conversions for $700 a pop.

"There are plenty of kits out there but there aren't a lot of people willing
to put it together for you," he said.

A lithium battery pack attached to the frame of the bicycle provides the
power to spin the back wheel, much like a motorcycle, but it can also pedal
using human power. The 48-volt battery is charged through a typical wall
outlet and lasts about a year of heavy use.
One niche market he's aiming for is the bamboo electric bicycles, which are
lightweight but also sturdy.

"In some cases it can be half the weight of steel and twice as strong, but
also very good at absorbing road vibrations and bumps," he said. There's
also opportunity to source bamboo grown in central Texas to trim shipping
costs.

In general, laws in Texas allow electric bicycles to share the road so long
as they don't go faster than about 20 miles per hour. One thing that's been
missing from the electric bicycle market is affordability and sleek design,
he argued.

"It needs to have sex appeal and spark the imagination," he said.

You can be sure that whatever Tesla makes it’s going to be powered by
electricity. It’s an electric car company after all. If the roadster, the
luxury sedan or the crossover haven’t proven to be enough for you, and if
you don’t see much value in the upcoming affordable Model 3 sedan, perhaps
you might like to purchase an electric truck from Tesla. It turns out that
the idea to make one hasn’t completely been shot down by the company so it
may come out with one at some point in the future.

During an interview at the StartmeupHK Festival in Hong Kong Tesla CEO Elon
Musk touched on the possibility of Tesla making a pickup truck. “I think it
is quite likely we will do a truck in the future,” said Musk, “I think it’s
sort of a logical thing for us to do in the future.”

Obviously that was no confirmation that Tesla will soon be making one but
it’s good to know that it’s open to the idea and whenever it feels the time
is right for an all-electric truck, it will start making one.

The company has a bigger challenge on its plate right now. Chevrolet is
coming out with the affordable all-electric Bolt and Tesla will counter it
with its affordably priced Model 3 sedan. It’s going to be the mass market
option that will enable lots of people to purchase an electric car as
opposed to the minority that can spend as much as $100,000 on an electric
car.

Electric Vehicles Revolutionize Airport Shuttle Fleets

ONTARIO, California, Jan. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Motorcars LLC., a
manufacturer of electric vehicles for the fleet market, continues its rapid
growth by accepting an order for 50 of its Zero Emissions Utility Shuttle
(ZEUS) buses from WallyPark, Joe's Airport Parking and Joe's Auto Parks, all
subsidiaries of the L Group of Companies and leaders in the airport
shuttle bus industry. The 14-passenger fully electric buses will be used to
service airport parking at Los Angeles International, San Diego
International, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, three of the
nation's busiest hubs.

Each of the buses is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more
than 60 tons of carbon dioxide per year as compared with a conventional
diesel shuttle, Phoenix says. All 50 buses will have fast-charging
capability, which allows full charging to take place in less than than three
hours.

In addition, the vehicles "we provide our clients with sizable savings in
fueling and maintenance costs, making us a great solution for our
customers," said Phoenix president Steven Davis. "Phoenix is excited to
partner with L on electrifying over 50 buses across the US, a significant
commitment to cleaning the air around our airports. L is a forward
thinking company that's making a difference in the Airport and parking
industry."

WallyPark/Joe's offer premier airport parking facilities in major
metropolitan areas across the nation (including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver,
Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Diego and Seattle).
WallyPark features valet and self-parking, shuttle service, and valet
express check-in/check-out services, as well as car care services that
include auto washing/detailing, window tinting, and oil changes at select
locations. Joe's Auto Parks, growing rapidly throughout the USA, is one of
Los Angeles' largest parking operations with more than 85 downtown
locations.

"We are pleased to partner with Phoenix Motorcars as we look to
revolutionize and electrify our Fleet of buses," said L & R's Chief
Operating Officer Kevin Montgomery.

Phoenix Motorcars is focused on commercial and government fleet customers.
Fleets are the ideal customers for EVs, due to their vehicle usage patterns,
centralized operation and high fuel consumption. In addition to the
environmentally friendly aspects of EVs, they offer significant cost
benefits over the total life of the vehicle.

Kia Soul EV preheating - time lapse
]

Here is a review of the 2016 Kia Soul EV after first three months of driving
and nearly 7,800 km (over 4,800 miles).

The maker of the video is pretty happy with the new car and recommends it as
a solid car with great quality. One of the small drawbacks is the navigation
system, but again the infotainment overall is considered great.

The real world range is 150-160 km (up to 100 miles) with best range in
summer weather at 180-186 km (and 4% capacity still available) so around 200
km is the limit. In the winter, range drops to 130-140 km and in highway
commuting maybe 120 km (75 miles) is to be expected.

The B mode for strong regenerative braking works great, so you almost don’t
need to touch the brakes.

And the heating is considered efficient.

]

Tesla's next vehicle will be the Model 3, a mass-market car that's expected
to be priced around $35,000.

The design will be unveiled in March, but we now have greater indications
that the Model 3 will actually be a platform for two vehicles — a small
sedan and a compact SUV — and possibly more.

At Electrek, Seth Weintraub offers some speculation about Model 3 pricing
and configurations.

This follows comments that Tesla's CTO, JB Straubel, made last year, when he
said that the Model 3 would be the basis for a variety of different
vehicles.

A big question for Tesla followers is whether the Model 3 will continue the
company's pattern of introducing a relatively luxurious new vehicle, as it
did with the $100,000-plus Model X SUV last year, or whether the Model 3
will really be an electric car for the masses.

General Motors rolled out its all-electric Bolt this month, with plans to
get the car to market this year. That's well ahead of the Model 3, which
won't arrive until 2017.

The Bolt's interior, as we found out when we test drove it in Las Vegas, is
perfectly nice but hardly luxurious. But GM will be able to sell the Bolt
for $30,000, after tax rebates and government credits. The Bolt will be the
only EV in the market that has range comparable with Tesla's vehicles. Tesla
range, given that it requires a big and expensive battery, has always come
at a steep price.

It's also unclear whether Tesla will retain on the crossover version of the
Model 3 the exotic Falcon Wing doors that nearly doomed an on-time Model X
launch last year. Tesla had to dump a supplier and redesign the feature. The
Model X's rear seats, which CEO Elon Musk likened to sculpture, also
presented problems. Tesla has now brought their production in-house.

Tesla hasn't confirmed it, but the Model 3 probably won't utilize the costly
aluminum structure of the Model S and Model X. Expect to see the Model 3 use
good old-fashioned steel.

Weintraub offers some intriguing ideas about the Model 3's access to Tesla's
supercharger network, which is free for all Tesla owners. There have been
some issues, however, with owners using the Superchargers for everyday
charging, rather than for longer trips, as Tesla reportedly intended the
system. Weintraub suggests that Model 3 owners may have to pay to use
Superchargers.

Re: [EVDL] Juicebox contactor problem

2016-02-01 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
Oh that was clear from the beginning: energize the contactor and power
goes to the J1772 plug. What I meant was that the choice to energize the
contactor and measure the 240V output presence is a software
implementation.
Remove the lines of code that energize the contactor on startup and you
will not see 240V on the J1772 plug. This means that the test if the
contactor works must be postponed until the first plug-in event.
Probably the GFCI test requires the contactor closed as well, so that
test can then also only be done after an EV plugged in, not on power-up.

Hope this clarifies,

Actually Cor, when I tested the Juicebox I had a meter in the J1772
Power pins
and it showed 240vac from the first thunk to the 2nd thunk, when the
contactor
closed and when it opened. And the easiest way the contactor can be
tested is to
put power thru it and that is what the Juicebox does.

Best to all
