Not a freezer: liquid nitrogen. Apparently, this is actually one way that
*damaged* Li batteries are (or have been) recycled: freeze them with liquid
nitrogen to render them inert, then put them into a huge shredder.

It is not one of the ways mentioned in this paper, so perhaps it is no longer
in use, or was never in widespread use?

Cheers,

Roger.

I think you all know the rest of that experiential wisdom; I was
inspired
by one of Bruce the EV-angelist's post "CA Low-Income Electrified
Rebates
Raised by $500" last Wednesday (which I read on Thursday) to do
something I
have never done before-->lease a NEW EV for myself. I have bought 3 &
leased 1 for my wife over the last 35 years, but never for myself. The
Chevy Spark I leased is probably not a good choice for many, but I seem
to
have caught a wave here as I reach the end of my 6th decade. The main
reason for lease over purchase were that we can't use the tax credit, so
the price they use to calculate took a $14000 cut, and the $2500 rebate
from the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program jumped to $4500 when I made the
application., based on our low income (I had a disability related
retirement at age 56). So, what it looks like now is that my total
monthly
cost for the lease, including insurance (which is a little more per
month
than my Escort EV) will be ~$90 per month. This does not include the
PG
charge for the electrons I purchase for charging, (which has averaged
less
than $10 a month for me for the Escort) or what I spend on installing an
EVSE. I am so used to working with a 40 mile range vehicle, that
doubling
that will make a real difference for me in extending my EV reach without
recharging in the North Bay, and making a Berkeley trip feasible for the
first time for us. I do not know, of course, whether the Escort EV will
be
the final step in a journey which this fellowship of giving, helpful
people
made possible for me to create and drive electric for ~18 years.
Tis the season to BE GRATEFUL!!

[EVDL] rtfm: Chevy Volt pih in long term storage

2016-10-31 Thread brucedp5 via EV
A simple search
https://www.google.com/search?q=Chevy+Volt+long+storage
 gives:

https://www.chevrolet.com/content/dam/Chevrolet/northamerica/usa/nscwebsite/en/Home/Ownership/Manuals_and_Videos/02_pdf/2k13volt.pdf
2013 Chevrolet Volt Owner Manual
 Vehicle Care 10-23 Vehicle Storage
{ WARNING 12‐volt batteries ...
See Jump Starting on page 10‑69

Up to four weeks
. Plug in the high voltage battery
charge cord if temperatures will
exceed 35°C (95°F) and keep
the 12-volt battery cables
connected.

Four weeks to 12 months
. Discharge the high voltage
battery until two or three bars
remain on the battery range
indicator (Battery symbol) on the
instrument cluster.

. Do not plug in the high voltage
battery charge cord.

. Remove the black negative (−)
cable from the 12-volt battery
and attach a trickle charger to
the battery terminals or keep the
12-volt battery cables connected
and trickle charge from the
underhood remote positive (+)
and negative (−) terminals. See
Jump Starting on page 10‑69 for
the location of these terminals.

Notice: The vehicle is equipped
with an AGM/VRLA 12-volt
battery, which can be damaged by
using the incorrect type of
trickle charger. An AGM/
VRLA-compatible charger must
be used, with the appropriate
setting selected. Follow the
trickle charger manufacturer
instructions.

Reconnecting the 12-Volt Black
Negative Cable
With the 12-volt black negative (−)
cable disconnected, the hatch
cannot be opened by pressing the
hatch release button. If the hatch is
closed and latched, reopen it:

1. Use the door key to open the
driver door.
2. Manually unlock and open one
of the rear doors.
3. Lower one of the rear seatbacks.
4. Pull the load floor cover forward
to access and reconnect the
12-volt battery black negative (−)
cable.
5. After the cable has been
connected, open the hatch and
then tighten the cable.
After the battery cable is
reconnected, it is possible that the
vehicle may not operate in Electric
Mode. If this happens, the high
voltage battery may need to be
charged ...

IMO, the problem with chemical fuels like gasoline is as they sit and age,
they can get gummy, which could lead to problems. Thus, I suggest before you
put any chemical fuel vehicle (ice, hev, pih, etc.) into long (6+mo)
storage, if the fuel is already old (you drive mostly in Electric-only
mode), use up that old-fuel, then put in a few gallons of fresh fuel, and
drive at high speeds just long enough to run that fresh fuel into its ice.
Then (short of adding a GM recommended fuel preservative as well) you will
have the freshest fuel when you return to fire the ice up.

Re: [EVDL] How cum zit? cid #'s added to nabble-archived URLs > fail to open links

2016-10-31 Thread EVDL Administrator via EV
I did some further investigation of this.

I am NOT seeing the extraneous glop on the end of the URL which Bruce
describes in the status bar of the following browsers: Seamonkey 2.33.1,
Firefox 45.0.2, Opera 12.16, and Midori 0.2.2.

I AM seeing the ";cid=" junk in the status bar of the following browsers:
Chromium 27.0.1421.0 and QTWeb Portable 3.7.3.

I expect that Safari, Chrome, and newer versions of Opera (all Webkit-based
browsers) would act like the latter two browsers.

Oddly, when I view the source of the page in ANY browser, this garbage
doesn't appear in any of the links.

I suspect this junk is being generated in the browser by a tracking script
on the Nabble server. Speculation here, I admit, but maybe we normally
wouldn't notice it but for the fact that someone at Nabble has accidentally
introduced a bug into their script.

I'm under deadline for a project right now and can't spend any more time on
this tonight, but I'll look into it later this week.

In the meantime, here are a couple of things you can do.

One is to use a Mozilla based browser at the Nabble archive. Mozilla seems
to strip off the garbage after the semicolon. (I think.) Webkit browsers
such as Chrome and Safari apparently don't. (I think.)

Or, be safe and just don't click directly on any links in a Nabble post.
Instead, highlight and copy the link text as displayed, open a new browser
window or tab, and paste the link text into the URL field on the new
window/tab.
