If someone needs contactors for a 12v system, I also have a little PCB that
steps up 12v to 24v to drive contactors with a 24v coil. Using a 24v coil
significantly reduces heating and power consumption in the coil.

British automaker Jaguar has revealed in a recent announcement that a fleet
of its all-electric I-Pace SUVs will be used at the Heathrow airport, for
offering shuttle services. The automaker also said that the use of I-Pace
SUVs at the airport will start during “the summer 2018.”

The announcement is noteworthy because even though the Jaguar I-Pace SUVs
are still to arrive in the market, the large orders which Jaguar has
received for the vehicle has already resulted in a considerable backlog.

According to Jaguar’s recent announcement, the automaker has received an
order of 200 I-Pace SUVs for shuttle-service use from the Heathrow airport.
For building up a fleet of the I-Pace SUVs, the airport has teamed up with
Jaguar and WeKnowGroup travel services firm.

The latest order for I-Pace SUV fleet of 200 vehicles for the airport is an
apparent indication of the increasing popularity of all-electric vehicles
for taxi services at airports.

With regard to the delivery of the 200 I-Pace SUVs for the airport, Jaguar
said that the first 50 units of the vehicle will be delivered this summer,
with the remaining 150 units to be added to the fleet “over the next 12
months.” Jaguar has also revealed that a charging station will be installed
at the Heathrow airport to support the I-Pace SUV fleet.

The Nissan Leaf is all new for 2018.
Since its introduction in 2010, Nissan has sold more than 300,000 Leafs,
making it the best-selling electric vehicle in the world.

The second-generation Leaf is powered by a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery
with a range of 151 miles on a single charge.

Our test car came with Nissan's optional ProPilot Assist
semiautonomous-driving tech.

We found the Leaf to be a pleasant and capable EV, but the 151 miles of
range is lacking when compared to its rivals.

The Nissan Leaf starts at $29,990 while our top-spec test car carried an
as-tested-price of $37,865.

The Nissan Leaf is a true pioneer in the electric-car game. The Leaf's
combination of perky performance, 100 miles of range, and easy-to-use
demeanor made it a popular choice for those looking for pure electric
mobility. Generous government incentives also helped move cars off dealer
lots. Since its introduction in 2010, Nissan has sold more than 320,000
Leafs globally, making it the best-selling electric car in the world.

But alas, time and tide wait for no man.

Since 2010, the benchmark for EV performance has changed drastically. For
consumers, 100 miles of range is no longer enough, especially after the
release of the comparably priced 238-mile Chevrolet Bolt and the 220-mile
Tesla Model 3.

(Note: Tesla's 220-mile Model 3 has not yet reached production. The company
is only producing the longer-range 310-mile version, which retails for
upwards of $55,000.)

The Tesla Model S and Model X have set new standards for speed and utility,
albeit at a much higher price.

So for 2018, Nissan introduced an all-new second-generation Leaf, one that's
better equipped to handle this latest wave of competition.

"This is the car of the future, today," Nissan North America chairman Denis
Le Vot told Business Insider in an interview at the 2018 New York Auto Show.
"In that sense, it is a flagship of the company's technology." In addition
to the Leaf, Nissan plans to launch eight fully electric models by 2022, Le
Vot said.

Earlier this year, Nissan dropped off a blue 2018 Leaf for us to check out.
It starts at $29,990 while our top-specced SL tester started at $36,200.
With options, our Tennessee-built car carried an as-tested-price of $37,865.
It should be noted that EV tax incentives could knock thousands of dollars
off the sticker price depending on where you live.

Here's a closer look at the 2018 Nissan Leaf:
[images] / Hollis Johnson/Business Insider ...

From 2010 to 2017, the Nissan Leaf sold at an unprecedented rate for an
electric car. 2017 Nissan LEAF. Nissan

Tesla Model 3, it was time for Nissan to update its stalwart EV.

For 2018, Nissan is back with the second-generation Leaf EV.

Aesthetically, there's a lot more to like about the new Leaf than its
predecessor. Gone are the soft curves and funky bug-eye headlights. In their
place, is a more aggressive and chiseled look.

Overall, we found the Leaf's styling to be handsome and modern.

Even though the new Leaf looks and feels larger, its length, width, height,
and weight remain virtually unchanged from its predecessor. Even the 0.28
drag coefficient remains the same.

Inside, the Leaf effortlessly blends tech with familiar Nissan touches. It's
modern without feeling too futuristic or weird.

And the tech features are abundant. Leading the way is Nissan's new ProPilot
Assist semiautonomous-driving system.

ProPilot is a camera-based system that stitches together input from the
car's steering assistance and intelligent cruise control tech to create a
semiautonomous-driving experience.

The system works pretty well and will keep you from swerving out of your
lane. But ProPilot is purely an assistance feature, so you'll need to keep
your hands on the steering wheel at all times. This is something Nissan has
been very clear about.

Nissan has also been working on single-pedal operation for the Leaf. Using
the new e-Pedal, Leaf owners can effectively drive without using the

Prince Harry and his new wife Meghan Markle have arrived in a converted
electric Jaguar for their wedding reception at Frogmore House, after a
multi-cultural wedding the likes of which Britain's royals and the millions
watching have never seen before.

The newlyweds shared tears, laughter and a passionate kiss in front of their
hundreds of VIP guests dominated by Hollywood stars including the Clooneys,
the Beckhams, Idris Elba, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hardy and James Corden.

[image] This evening the royal couple, the newly created Duke and Duchess
of Sussex, headed to their reception at Frogmore House, a 17th-century venue
in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

About 200 guests were due to join the couple at the evening event at the
Frogmore mansion, where Meghan was due to make a speech to guests.

They travelled in a silver blue Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero, which was
originally manufactured in 1968 and now runs on electricity, to the English
country house which stands in the home park of Windsor Castle and is part of
the Crown Estate. It is only open to individuals on three days of the year.

Actor James Corden, who attended the ceremony earlier with his wife Julia
Carey, is set to play the role of host and entertainer for the reception, it
is reported. Guests invited to Frogmore House, a royal estate in Windsor
Home Park, were given a few hours after the lunch to rest and change
outfits.

The bride's evening dress is designed by Stella McCartney and is a bespoke
lily white high neck gown made of silk crepe, while her Aquazurra shoes are
silky satin with soles painted in baby blue.

A double decker coach full of guests arrived at the entrance to Frogmore
House for the evening reception at 7.15pm. The coach had arrived from
Coworth Park hotel in Ascot, where Princes Harry and William spent the night
before the wedding. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie arrived in a black
Bentley at 7.30pm.

Earlier Meghan became the first mixed-race member of the royal family in an
extraordinary journey for a girl born in LA to a white father and
African-American mother who fought her way through the tough world of
showbusiness to land a plum role in the TV series Suits.

Harry and Meghan's big day couldn't have been more different than royal
weddings of the past, especially because the prince was visibly emotional
throughout - and guests suggested it was the most diverse major event in the
Queen's 66-year reign.

The prince had looked tearful when he saw his bride for the first time,
grabbing her hand telling her: 'You look amazing - I missed you' before
tenderly lifting her veil ...

Meghan Markle's Givenchy gown was everything we imagined it might be and so
much more ...

Introduction
Electric vehicles are powered by huge battery banks, constructed of long
strings of batteries in series (Figure 1). These battery banks, typically
made up of lithium-ion (Li+) cells, can achieve operating voltages higher
than 800V. However, the materials of this battery chemistry can be damaged
if overcharged. Each cell voltage must be monitored and, if necessary,
appropriate control methods must be applied to avoid overvoltage. Excessive
cell leakage current, overvoltage, undervoltage, and extreme temperature can
all lead to weaker performance or even catastrophic failure.

This article reviews the structure of a typical electric vehicle (EV)
battery and highlights many concerns associated with its complexity and
safety. We then introduce a novel battery management system that overcomes
these concerns, allowing EV power system engineers to design with
confidence.

EV Battery Structure
The typical EV battery depicted in Figure 2 is made of 6720 Li+ cells,
managed by eight control modules. Each cell has a capacity of 3.54Ah, adding
up to a total battery nominal energy storage of 100kWh (3.54Ah x 4.2V x 6720
cells). The series of 96 rows, each made of 70 cells in parallel, add up to
a battery voltage of 403.2V (96 rows x 4.2V), with a capacity of 248Ah
(100kWh/403.2V or 3.54Ah x 70 columns).

This allows an EV to travel 300 miles at a speed of 50mph for 6 hours before
exhausting the battery. The EV motor will draw an average current of 41A
(248Ah/6h).

Data Link
In the daisy-chain configuration of Figure 2, all the control modules
communicate serially with a central microprocessor via IC1; isolation is
required between the microprocessor and the first module, and from one
module to the next. Alternatively, in an isolated controller area network
(CAN) configuration, a more cumbersome solution is necessary since each
module requires one microprocessor and a CAN IC, in addition to the BMS IC.
The data link must reliably operate in noisy high-power battery
environments, where both the high dV/dt supply noise and common-mode current
injection (induced by electromagnetic fields) are present.

Cell Diagnostics
Many things can go wrong in a battery pack. Excessive current leakage, high
or low voltage, and extreme temperature of the cells can all lead to
weakened performance or even catastrophic failure. The manifestation of
these faults varies with the battery cell configuration. In a series stack
of cells, voltage variations are more readily spotted, while in parallel
configurations, the leakage current becomes amplified. In a mix of
series-parallel configurations, like the one in Figure 2, deviations in
leakage current are more readily measured while voltage deviations induced
by a single bad cell are attenuated and require measurements with a higher
level of accuracy.

Cell Balancing
Li+ and lithium-polymer battery chemistries cannot be overcharged without
damaging their active materials. In a string of cells in series, the
state-of-charge (SoC) of each cell voltage must be monitored, and if
necessary, appropriate control methods must be applied to avoid overvoltage
due to overcharge. Cells in parallel tend to be self-balancing since the
parallel connection holds all the cells at the same voltage preventing
runaway voltage of a single cell. Accordingly, in a matrix of cells such as
in Figure 2, the monitoring proceeds by a row of cells, rather than a single
cell. Each module in Figure 2 contains all the electronics necessary to
perform balancing by means of arrays of

Mercedes really, really wants you to know that its EQ electric cars will
soon become a practical reality. The automaker has shown off heavily
camouflaged prototypes of its EQC SUV with word that the production model is
on track to launch in 2019. Test mules already endured "tough" winter
conditions in northern Sweden between January and March, while upcoming
trials will check its powertrain and suspension. It won't be a gentle summer
for the EQC, as Mercedes is subjecting it to a heat stress test in Spain.

The EQC is leading Mercedes' entry into from-scratch EVs and should be
competitive with the likes of Tesla's Model X and Jaguar's I-Pace. The
twin-motor vehicle pumps out roughly 400HP and is estimated to drive up to
310 miles on a charge, albeit on an outgoing test cycle (US EPA figures are
likely to be lower). Its main advantage is likely to be that three-pointed
star on the front -- it's an upscale electric vehicle with a familiar name
and a (mostly) familiar approach to design.

Fire ignites at Ecomaine facility

SAN FRANCISCO - Love your electronic devices all you want, but please,
please, please don't throw them in the trash when you're done with them.

That's a plea from makers of the lithium-ion batteries that typically power
our phones, laptops and even power tools. Thrown into the trash or even the
recycling bin, they can cause fires at trash and recycling centers.

Last year, 65% of waste facilities fires in California began with
lithium-ion batteries. And when one goes, others can, too.

"If there are multiple batteries there, you will have not just a fire, you
will have explosions,' said Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle, a
national recycling program funded by battery manufacturers.

It's such a big problem that this week, California has launched an awareness
campaign to try to get consumers to keep these ever-so-useful but also
potentially dangerous items out of garbage trucks and landfills. It's part
of a national effort to keep increasingly common batteries from causing
fires.

Those fires can be devastating. In March, an improperly disposed of
lithium-ion battery caused a five-alarm fire at a recycling facility in
Queens in New York City. It burned for two days and shut down four branches
of the Long Island Rail Road for several hours, due to the thick smoke
blowing onto the tracks.

That same month, an Indianapolis recycling plant also shut down after a fire
blamed on batteries.

Last year, a lithium-ion battery thrown into the trash caused an explosion
in a New York City garbage truck when the workers compacted the waste,
igniting and exploding the battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in cell phones, laptop computers, cameras
and rechargeable power tools and even the electric scooters that have risen
in popularity in the past year, says Kerchner. They also power electric cars
like Teslas and Chevy Bolts.

When it comes to the lithium-ion batteries in everyday devices, consumers
tend to put them in the recycling "hoping that somebody at the end of the
line will recycle them eventually,' said George Kerchner, executive director
of the Rechargeable Battery Association.

We use a lot of them. In 2017, 175 million pounds of lithium-ion batteries
were sold into the U.S. market, according to Call2Recycle.

The problem with lithium-ion batteries is the same thing that makes them so
great - they're small and light but still pack a serious energy punch. These
are the same kind type batteries that were catching fire in the recalled
Samsung Galaxy Note 7's - as well as many other Samsung and other phone
models that don't regularly explode.

Even when they've pooped out in your device, there's still enough charge in
them that they can create a spark if the terminal of the battery - the metal
bits that send power from the battery into the device, touch something
metallic, like the side of a garbage truck.

This can close the circuit, which creates an electric charge that can create
a spark.

"And sparks create fires. If it's at a recycling facility where it's mixed
in with paper and other items that are burnable, that just goes up like you
wouldn't believe,' Smith said.

"These are high-energy batteries, no question about it. If they're not
properly handled they can catch on fire, Kerchner said.

What to do with them

Some areas' recycling programs have special battery recycling. For example,
in San Francisco, you can leave batteries in a bag on top of your recycling
bin on trash day and the local trash company will take them away to be
recycled.

Nationally, lithium-ion batteries can be recycled at all Home Depots, Lowes
and Best Buy stores.

If you put them in your recycling bin, put them in a closed plastic bag so
that the battery can't come into contact with metal. A Ziploc bag or
something similar works well, said Smith.

Don't put them in the regular garbage, which is typically crushed and
shredded. That can cause fires and even explosions.

A less optimal but possible solution is to wrap either electrical or duct
tape aroun
