[EVDL] EVLN: Tesla patents make packs safer in a fire

Therefore, if it’s not something you worry about in gas-powered cars, it shouldn’t be something you worry about in Tesla vehicles or most other electric vehicles for that matter. But it doesn’t mean that there is no room for improvement in making battery packs safer and more resistant to fire. Tesla has recently patented two new inventions to do just that. The automaker submitted two patent applications that have recently been released. The patents have to do with managing the release of gas when battery cells fail inside a battery module and a new way to more efficiently terminate a battery pack fire. The problem with battery fires is that when one or more cells fail and catch on fire, it releases a significant amount of energy which can result in nearby cells also catching on fire. With sometimes thousands of cells in a battery pack, this can create a significant chain reaction that can last for hours. The good news is that it most often, aside from in the most extreme cases, leaves enough time for the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle. But if you could vent internally generated gases from a cell that is failing, you could potentially prevent others from catching on fire. At the battery module level, Tesla is patenting a new design with weak points between cells made to break in case of a cell failure and release the gas. Here’s the full patent application for the battery module: At the battery pack level, if all fails and it has caught on fire, it is very difficult for firefighters to address the situation. They have to apply a great amount of water and even then, they will have to monitor the pack for hours and even days. One of the issues is that Tesla’s battery packs are designed to be sealed and not let water or any fluid inside for obvious reasons since it is installed in the floor of the vehicle. But Tesla is patenting a way to inject a “thermal-control liquid” inside the pack during a fire: “A battery pack has an enclosure that contains a plurality of batteries and conductors and that resists the flow of fluid between an interior of the enclosure and an exterior of the enclosure. An exit vent formed in the enclosure at a first location allows exhaust gas to flow from the interior of the enclosure to the exterior of the enclosure. A fill port formed in the enclosure at a second location, in an impermeable state, prevent ingress of fluid from an exterior of the enclosure to an interior of the disclosure. The fill port, in a permeable state achieved by receipt of a perforation tool there through, permits ingress of a sufficient amount of a thermal-control liquid into the enclosure through the fill port to terminate a runaway thermal event in the battery pack. A fill port coupler having a passageway and an externally accessible port may be included.” The solution could make it a lot easier for first responders to address a fire in a Tesla vehicle in the future. [EVDL] EVLN: Performance modified Tesla-3 Track Record> That’s straight up nutty
https://gas2.org/2018/07/31/tesla-model-3-track-mode-unlocked-sets-track-record/ Tesla Model 3 Track Mode Unlocked – Sets Track Record July 31, 2018 Kyle Field [image https://gas2.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/MountainPassPerf_CSCS_MAIN-800x445.jpg shares https://instagram.com/p/Bly2aFijFzI/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_loading_state_control https://instagram.com/p/Bl32dHlD8VD/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_loading_state_control video https://youtu.be/AKobATboIWY Tesla Model 3 Track Mode | Drifting World's First Tesla Model 3 Drifting On Track ] Sasha Anis and his crew of tuners at Mountain Pass Performance [ https://www.instagram.com/mountainpassperformance/ ] may be known for their big brake kits, coilovers, and suspension mods for the Tesla Model 3, but today, they took the wraps off their latest and perhaps greatest achievement: disabling Electronic Stability Control (SC) and the Traction Control System (TCS) without disabling the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) on the Model 3. CleanTechnica got an inside scoop [ https://cleantechnica.com/2018/07/31/mountain-pass-performance-unlocks-tesla-model-3-track-mode-shatters-track-record-cleantechnica-exclusive/ ]. While details on the modification have yet to be shared, Sasha did share that they have designed a defeat system that, unlike the defeat devices implemented by internal combustion vehicle manufacturers, is designed to let the vehicle play a little nicer on the track. The factory Stability Control and Traction Control systems were designed to maximize traction and safety in the Model 3 while on the street, but when it hits the track, drivers are looking for more control over the vehicle. These two automated systems continuously override the accelerator inputs, even going so far as to kill the acceleration when the vehicle is pushed to the limits. Racers like to have more control over the vehicle, so Sasha and his crew of misfits took on the challenge and have essentially unlocked the famed “Track Mode” on the Tesla Model 3 … and theirs is a rear-wheel drive model, not an all-wheel drive Performance Edition. Naturally, Sasha quickly took the newly modified Model 3 out to the road to test out the new modes and found that he was able to easily get the vehicle to break traction around a turn, confirming that ESC and TCS had been disabled, then stopped abruptly, confirming that ABS was still functioning. After the road test to confirm the new modifications were successful, Sasha and the team at Mountain Pass Performance took “the future” — the name of their Model 3 — to the track to see just how much it had improved. The results were astonishing. Over the last few weeks, the team at Mountain Pass Performance has developed a new Big Brake Kit for the Model 3 along with a set of custom coilovers and some suspension mods for the car — all of which stacked onto the capability added by a good set of rims and tires. The MPP hardware modifications took the car to a new level, but this new “hack” blows the lid off of the entire thing. I won’t spoil the fun. Sasha reached out to us and shared that the, “Car also went wildly faster today with the traction control disabled and some more setup work. It would have set a new record in its class by almost a second if this was a competition. The record is a 1:20.3 by an M3 and we did a 1:18.9!!!” The modification was achieved “with CAN communication with the Motec,” according to a post by Mountain Pass Performance on its Instagram feed. Not only does this new modification validate the direction he’s headed with “the future” — it also confirms that the Model 3 is a serious contender and, while the progress made by Mountain Pass Performance is stunning, the outfit has only been playing with it for a few weeks, so there is no doubt that this is only the beginning and Sasha Anis and the crew at Mountain Pass Performance will be sitting on top with a new record. Elon Musk and the team at Tesla have created a beast, but they tamed it before unleashing it on the streets. Sasha Anis and his team at Mountain Pass Performance are now enticing the beast to reveal its inner nature. They are putting the car on a strict workout regimen designed to squeeze as much performance out of this thing as possible, while feeding it only a diet of fresh and clean renewable energy. The results today confirm that the Model 3 is indeed a monster on the track and that Tesla has an opportunity to open up an entirely new segment of customers in the racing community if it’s willing to play nice and officially open up “Track Mode” features to drivers of its vehicles. An even better bet would be to go straight to the guys over at Mountain Pass Performance to figure out what racers actually want from the car … and work with them to build up a custom set of track capabilities for the Model 3. What’s even crazier about this accomplishment is that Sasha did this with just the RWD version of the car. It’s not the Perfor

Mark Hanson via EV wrote: Sounds like it's best to keep a spare small battery capable of 450a or ultra caps by Maxwell etc like Lee mentioned. It's a bummer to be in the middle of a big lake and the boat won't start for the next skier. When an ICE starting battery "suddenly" goes dead, it's usually because it's been slowly failing for a long time, and finally crossed the threshold where it no longer has the "ooomph" needed to start the engine. Most vehicles have no instrumentation at all on the battery; so the owner has no idea that the battery is getting weaker and weaker. You know a lot about batteries. If you added at the very least a voltmeter and ammeter, you should be able to tell if something is going wrong. For instance, if the voltage sags more than normal during starting, or if the charging current after starting does not rise to a high level for a short time and then drop off to a normal "trickle charge" level, then something is failing. That said, your 4lbs battery probably has between 200 to 300 Wh of capacity at best, using normal density numbers. [EVDL] Proper charge port connection
Hello,On El Moto my electric motorcycle conversion El Moto part 35 First ride with the 2kWh Lithium battery | | | | | | | | | | | El Moto part 35 First ride with the 2kWh Lithium battery I have battery mounted & everything assembled so, let's see what she can do. | | | | I have a circuit breaker mounted in a small plastic box (so all terminals safe & covered) I am mounting a charge port next to it (for connecting the battery charger) My questions are: 1.) When connecting the charge port, should the positive (+) wire (from the charge port) be connected to the Battery side of the circuit breaker or the Auxiliary side? If it's connected to the battery side, charging could be done with the circuit breaker "main cut-off switch" turned "off" (if/by doing it this way the whole bike would be dead/off) or If it's connected to the Auxiliary side, the circuit breaker "main cut-off switch" would have to be turned "on" to charge the battery (if/by doing it this way "some stuff" on the bike would still be live/on) * The second way kinda makes me nervous 2.) Should there be a small fuse (~10A) wired in-line between the charge port & the circuit breaker? (for added protection?) * It's carrying a "load" so, I would think so 3.) Should the negative (-) wire (from the charge port) be connected "directly" to the negative (-) terminal if the battery? * I would think so, where else?
