Electric car catches fire, burns passenger
CGTN Published on Jun 14, 2018
Surveillance footage shows an electric scooter carrying two men suddenly
burst into flames while traveling at high speed. The accident took place in
Jiangxi Province's Ganzhou City in east China on June 4.
]

Electric vehicles use highly inflammable Lithium-ion batteries, which can
catch fire and go into flames within seconds

With the world moving towards electric mobility, we will soon see roads
filled with electric vehicles. While the future of electric mobility is
still a few years away in India, the Chinese market is filled with electric
vehicles and the consumers have accepted the vehicles quite well. There are
many kinds of electric vehicle on sale in the Chinese market including the
locally-made ones.

(Above) is a video of a locally assembled electric two-wheeler in China that
catches fire within seconds and was reduced to ashes. Electric vehicles use
complicated charging modules and have big batteries that power the electric
motor. Most of the modern-day electric vehicles get the highly efficient
lithium-ion batteries, which are known for their excellent capacity and
charge hold time.

However, the lithium-ion batteries can be extremely dangerous. As seen in
the video, the scooter catches fire in the middle of the road and within
seconds the whole vehicle is engulfed in the fire. Lithium-ion batteries can
get affected in many various ways. It can be because of a short-circuit or a
punctured battery pack.

The fire can spread uncontrollably. To ensure that the batteries remain safe
and avoid any such incident, manufacturers often install safety device that
can cut off the power supply to the battery during a short circuit. Many
manufacturers also place them in secured enclosures to avoid any punctures,
especially during high-speed accidents.

It is not only about low-cost electric vehicles being vulnerable to such
accidents. Many Tesla vehicles have also caught fire after accidents due to
the lithium-ion batteries. While the electric future looks unavoidable now,
manufacturers should be working towards the vehicles safer. Electric
vehicles can explode during accidents and that reduces any chance of
survival.

The shocking incident in China also shows police officers carrying fire
extinguishers and dousing the out-of-control fire. Even with the
extinguisher, it takes some time to bring the fire under control. There is
no doubt that electric vehicles are the future but will be safer than the
regular vehicles in the market? That’s a big question that remains
unanswered for the time being.

Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory February 05th 2019. ? via 42HOW
Gigafactory 3’s most recent drone flyover
]

The construction of Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai is starting to see
some serious progress. As could be seen in a drone flyover of the site
during the Chinese New Year, most of Tesla’s 864,885-square meter plot of
land appears to be ready for construction. An initial building that appears
to be a temporary structure has also been completed, and a separate area of
the site has been overlaid with concrete as well.

The recent drone video was posted on Chinese social media by the 42HOW group
and shared on YouTube by Tesla owner-enthusiast Vincent Yu. Over the course
of the nearly two-minute clip, several angles of Gigafactory 3’s land were
emphasized, particularly the first building on the site, which is already
equipped with several air conditioning units.

Since the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony last month, work on Gigafactory
3 has proceeded at a rapid pace. Barely a week after the ceremony, for one,
images from the Tesla community emerged depicting numerous trucks and heavy
equipment moving dirt from the site. In the recent drone flyover, work on
the land appears to have been paused, though this might very well be due to
one of China’s most important holidays — the Chinese New Year. With this in
mind, it would not be surprising if later drone flyovers of the site would
show renewed activity once more.

Tesla is following an incredibly aggressive timeframe for Gigafactory 3.
Elon Musk noted that the facility’s initial construction is expected to be
completed this summer. The production of electric cars — the first of which
would be an affordable variant of the Model 3 that would be sold on the
Chinese market — is expected to begin by the end of 2019. This timeline was
addressed by Elon Musk during the fourth quarter earnings call, when he
noted that the buildout of Gigafactory 3 would be “extremely fast.”

“So it basically would be — this will be extremely fast. I get like daily
updates of progress of the Shanghai Gigafactory, and those factories are
going to go up like lightning. So, we do feel quite confident at this point,
at least for the factories that are in our control, that we can achieve
volume production in Shanghai by the end of the year. And that should allow
us to get to the 10,000 vehicles a week rate or very close to it by the end
of the year,” Musk said.

While undoubtedly ambitious, Tesla’s timeframe for Gigafactory 3 is actually
quite feasible, especially considering that the company enjoys the support
of the Chinese government. Part of this support became evident in the
initiatives being placed to help Tesla acquire loans from local banks, as
well as the involvement of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co.,
Ltd, a subsidiary of China Construction, which is owned by the government.

TOMO Concept by IED

video flash
]

Named Tomo, it will debut next to the updated Urban EV prototype

Honda is set to make a major splash at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show by
debuting the newest iteration of its due-for-production fully electric
prototype, but it turns out that won't be the only EV on the stand. In
partnership with the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Turin, Italy, Honda
will debut a brand-new design concept, the miniature Honda Tomo EV ute.

Honda and IED have a long history, as this will be the 15th 1:1 design model
the two have produced. The stylish concepts are the thesis projects for the
two-year master's program at the university's transportation design school.
For this exercise, Honda sent 13 students a simple, if roughly translated,
brief: "Honda next 2025 fun driving." The result is a bite-sized, curvaceous
electric coupe with a tiny rear truck bed.

Tomo, which means "friend" in Japanese, is meant to portray how young people
see "driving pleasure," and "is able to combine the needs of leisure time
outside the city with business demands of the city." At 13.1 feet long, 6.2
feet wide, and 5.1 feet tall, it's slightly bigger than a Mazda Miata.

The two-door coupe resembles both of Honda's most recent EV concepts, the
Urban EV and the Sports EV. The body's bar-soap smoothness, the white and
black contrasting exterior, the circular lighting patterns, and even the
black hood scoop detail all make this a perfect fit for Honda's blossoming
family of electrics.

The talented student designers who worked on the project are Ricardo
Alejandro Campos Ortega, Rudraksh Banerjie, Tanmay Madhukar Chavan, Michele
Corneliani, Shobhanjit Das, Alexander Marcel Fröse, Xiaole Ge, Ramón
Emmanuel Hernández Cortés, Tianchen Huang, Sameer Aminullah Khan, Saketh
Nalla, Jay Shrikant Nibandhe and Yu-Jie Wang. Campos Ortega's design won out
for the exterior, while Banerjie's design was implemented for the interior.

As of now, this is just a design exercise, but its similarity to Honda's
real concepts give us hope that it might one day influence a real production
car. We think it'd be pretty amazing to have a modern-day take on the Subaru
Mighty Boy.

]

Without body panels or a real interior, anyway.

Volkswagen gave us our first look at an undisguised prototype of its future
electric cars—sort of. This is the MEB (Modular Elektrobaukasten) platform
which will underpin the VW Group’s future compact and subcompact
battery-powered EVs, including the production versions of the
Volkswagen-brand concepts we’ve seen so far: I.D., I.D. Crozz, I.D. Vizzion,
and I.D. Buzz.

For those familiar with modern battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), there’s
nothing radical here: The battery pack is under the floor, the mechanical
bits are ahead of the firewall, and the control hardware is spread
throughout the chassis. With no need to support an internal-combustion
powertrain, the MEB platform features short overhangs, no driveline/exhaust
tunnel, and a low cargo-area floor.

During the presentation, Volkswagen touted the benefits of a dedicated EV
architecture versus making a BEV out of the MQB platform that underpins the
e-Golf—primarily that there’s no need to stuff batteries and other equipment
into whichever nook or cranny will fit them. Volkswagen blames the
petrol-first layout for the electric Golf’s 125-mile range, and while we’re
a bit skeptical—Hyundai gets 258 miles out of the Kona Electric, which
shares its structure with variants that have internal-combustion
engines—it’s obvious MEB has plenty of space for a large battery. We have no
reason to doubt VW’s estimate of 200 to 300 miles of range, and with the
rapid advances being made in battery chemistry, we’d hope those numbers are
conservative.

We did learn additional interesting bits about the MEB platform. First,
although BEVs can have their motors pretty much any place the engineers
please, MEB-based cars will offer either rear- or all-wheel-drive. VW is
looking for rear-drive performance benefits, which we applaud; still, we
have to wonder what fate will befall Snow Belt buyers want a budget-friendly
electric car but might be uncomfortable with rear-drive. If they want a VW,
they’ll have to pony up for the extra-cost all-wheel-drive system. (Or get
winter tires, which can make the drive wheels somewhat less of an issue.)
With so much flexibility in powertrain placement, we can’t help but wonder
why Volkswagen wouldn’t make front-drive BEVs as well.

Another curiosity: The rear brakes are drums. We assumed this was primarily
a cost-cutting move; after all, modern BEVs rely heavily on regenerative
braking (using the motors as generators to charge the battery, which creates
resistance that slows the car), to the point that friction brakes do only a
fraction of the work. VW tells us that drums have less rolling resistance
when the brakes are released. Rear-wheel drive and disc/drum brakes? It’s
the 1970s all over again!

The point Volkswagen was looking to make—and the one we see as most
important—is that the electric cars it promised in the wake of Dieselgate
are well on their way, and that it won’t be staking its future on cars that
offer myriad powertrain options. The MEB platform shows that it is
approaching EVs as it would gasoline or diesel cars, creating an
architecture that can underpin a family of products designed to suit every
purse and purpose. Considering that VW is the world’s largest automaker, MEB
could signal a sea change in the availability and acceptance of BEVs.

[EVDL] EVLN: (Rumor) GM,Tesla Electric pickup truck

2019-02-13 Thread brucedp5 via EV

https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121451_rumor-gm-electric-pickup-could-come-from-tesla
Rumor: GM electric pickup could come from Tesla
Feb 12, 2019 Eric C. Evarts

[image] 2019 GMC Sierra ice

Last month, the president of General Motors' GMC truck division said the
brand was considering building an electric pickup.

Now, according to a CleanTechnica report [
https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/12/scoop-gm-working-on-electric-pickup-truck-with-tesla-powertrain/
], that pickup could come from Tesla.

Even the CleanTechnica reporter says to file this in the category of an
enticing rumor, rather than fact, because there are no pictures, and a
single, anonymous source inside GM. Still, he reports confidence in the
source and says the person has been reliable about other findings ...

Tesla's own CEO Elon Musk has been talking for years about building a Tesla
pickup. In his most recent interviews about the Tesla truck, he has
described it as "a really futuristic-like cyberpunk, Blade Runner pickup
truck," and said that it will have a massive towing capacity of 300,000
pounds and be made with lots of expensive titanium.

Musk has even alluded to a second, more attainable and mainstream pickup.
Now it looks possible that latter pickup could come from GM. GM CEO Mary
Barra has announced that the company plans to convert to an all-electric
lineup, and is revamping the automaker's electric strategy with a move to
make Cadillac its primary electric-car division.

CleanTechnica reports that the General Motors pickup—either a GMC or a
Chevrolet Silverado—could get its entire powertrain from Tesla, including
batteries and motors. That would hardly be an unprecedented step, after GM
leaned on supplier LG to develop most of the powertrain for the Chevrolet
Bolt EV.

It wouldn't be the first time a company has leaned on Tesla for powertrain
components either—Toyota with the 2012-2014 RAV4 EV, for instance ...

GM regularly partners with other automakers to provide specialized
engineering expertise or manufacturing.

The rest of the truck could would come from GM's practiced truck development
team.

If such an agreement pans out, it could also be a way for GM to access
Tesla's battery production from its Nevada Gigafactory, the largest producer
of lithium-ion batteries in the world. Thus far, GM has bought batteries
from South Korean supplier LG Chem ...

Pickups are the second-largest selling segment of the car market, and many
electric-car buyers have been clamoring to be able to buy a pickup with
battery power.

Last month, Ford said it is developing an electric version of its upcoming
F-Series, along with a plug-in hybrid version.

The automakers seem to be racing startup electric-automaker Rivian, which
got a glowing reception for its R1T electric pickup concept when it revealed
the truck at the LA auto show last November.

It's not clear how seriously to take this report, but we'll be watching for
any confirmation.
