I can submit updates for packages I currently maintain anyway ... but
not for openSSL.
If someone wants to see an update for a special package, then feel free
to Mail here or me directly and I will have a look.
This is what I can offer ...

... thanks for your tremendous work Wolfgang !!

Seeing how we were struggling up to now with 13.1 I see no way to
officially extend the support further.
Nevertheless I'm volunteering to accept patches if submitted through the
maintenance mechanism but I would not call it official support until
someone steps up to take the responsibility tracking security issues.
Therefore the following facts:
- currently there is noone after November who officially tracks updates
- 13.1 has to be considered insecure officially
- patches will be accepted if submitted from contributors
- if people step up, support can be extended

The more or less official wisdom was to upgrade to 42.2.

I have tested this under vmware player, and finished with a graphical
mode with XFCE that locks dead. ssh keeps working. I have to test again
with RC1.

I fear that the automated test bench does not test 13.1 -> 42.2 path.

All my machines are 13.1.

Hello all,

Can anybody here please answer the original question (besides tips about distro
change)?
It's very important for me too to know what to do after November 1st as I have
several 13.1 machines sitting there.

Greetings
Helmut

Hallo together,

how are the plans for openSUSE 13.1 after 2016-11-01. Is there a change for a
longer support of the current evergreen release?

Greetings

As long as you just use it from the CLI, it should be OK. Using Ubuntu with
Unity is clearly a no-go in terms of privacy.

But using TW from command line and not running behind each and every update
may be OK for a server as well. Depends on the needs.

Ubuntu *is* (a) Debian (derivative), just with a custom set of
personality modifications designed for shielding its users from the
underlying power of FOSS, e.g. Unity (aka only one way), and sudo (Ugh!).

But it is easier to handle, isn't it? More popular.

Methinks result of marketing (aka $$$) to n00b power, and Google returning
askubuntu.com hits on virtually every Linux query (even when -ubuntu is a
search term). Maybe not so good for anyone already exposed to the power of
Linux and/or comfy with that power.

sudo can be bypassed. "sudo su -" for instance.

Permanently:

sudo passwd root

Then empty the sudoers list.

various Apt-based alternatives would likely be, at the least for
openSUSE ship-jumpers, frustrating.

Yes, I was afraid of that. This pair of friends are debian entusiasts,
so that is what they want me to do. They even "threat" with replacing my
machines OS when I'm not looking with debian, ha ha. Grrr!

Me, I think something else would be easier, perhaps ubuntu. Unless they
come and set it up completely for me, ha ha, and keep maintaining it, ha!

If that is all your worried about, I haven't had a "break" on tw for over
a year.

but I do use 13.1 for server and may keep doing so for some time yet.

replace my old 32 bit hardware, or jump distro to something else, for
the server.
