[Evolution] How Best to Use Dark Theme

2017-08-05 Thread Benjamin Selzer
I'm trying to use dark theme + HTML as best I can, but I'm having
troubles. I know HTML is not ideal with a dark theme, but most of my
world involves HTML email, so it is what is is.

The problem is not so much when reading HTML emails, because Evolution
makes the background white. While this is unattractive, there is really
no choice, and it works well.

The problem is mostly in composing. When composing, the background
stays with the dark theme. For my own text, this is fine because it
appears as white text on a dark theme background (similar to when
composing plain text). However, the text that I am replying to is often
blue because it is a reply from Outlook. This blue becomes almost
impossible to see on the dark theme background. In addition, people's
signatures (which are often formatted in HTML) show as black text on
the dark theme background (hard to see).

If I ignore these things, the email looks OK to the recipient, so that
is good, but when replying to emails, I sometimes want to read what the
other person wrote, and it becomes difficult.

The only way I can think to avoid this is to have the composer window
always use white background when composing in HTML. Is there a setting
to do this? Funny enough, I think there was actually a bug in a version
of Evolution about one year ago whereby the HTML composer window would
be white background, even in dark theme. It worked much better. Now,
the composer window contains the dark theme in HTML, and it makes
problems.

Can I reactivate white background when composing in in HTML with dark
theme? If not, any plans to make this available? If not, any other
ideas?

I am on Arch Linux, evolution 3.24.4.

Thanks,
Benjamin

Nevertheless, my libsoup finally updated to 2.58.1, so another

It would be nice if this were community support. However, unfortunately,
it's a forum for a small circle of individual (you included) to deflect any
responsibility on the part of Evolution for the myriad of problems it has
and make those requesting help feel stupid for asking. Clearly it is you

[Evolution] Trouble with EWS Contacts since Upgrading to 3.24

2017-04-22 Thread Benjamin Selzer
Hello. Since I upgraded to 3.24 last night on Arch, I'm having trouble
syncing my Contacts on my EWS account. I get frequent errors like this:

https://goo.gl/photos/2BJAicEw4KCWeh618

It does this for numerous address books that I apparently have in my
EWS account, but that I never knew about. When I log into this account
using Outlook on Windows or OWA, I just see Contacts. With Evolution, I
see all these:

https://goo.gl/photos/w3X8cgiiGcizP6pD9

I have no idea what these are, but they remained silently in the
background in 3.22, but they are making annoying errors in 3.24.

Also, FYI:

[benjaminselzer@xps13 ~]$ evolution --version
evolution 3.24.2

Any ideas? Thanks.

And in the past I've seen complaints about composers that have done
exactly that along the lines of "why doesn't my text look the same
after I sent it as it does in the composer".

And Evolution can do lots of things a phone can't. They are different
bits of software. If it bothers you, which it seems to, then file a
bug.

Well, there is a bit for it, it's called "Preformatted", that's what
it's for, for inserting preformatted text that you don't want the
composer to wrap (which is why, it seems foolishly, I suggested that
you use it).

What you really want is a new type of formatting - I think it's
normally called 'Flowing Text' - i.e the text is soft broken at the
composer edge, but those soft breaks aren't translated to hard breaks
when the mail is sent.

But, can I just say that viewing that sort of thing on a desktop with a
wide window is not pleasant.  The text just stretches across the whole
window - for instance the text in the email you sent, that I'm replying
to, has a line that is over 200 characters long on my screen - if I try
I can just about stretch the window so the whole of the first paragraph
is one long line of 250 characters. It's silly I know, but I'm just
trying to point out that it is virtually impossible to create something
that everyone will be content with.

The best thing to do is to file a bug or enhancement and let the devs
decide how they are going to deal with it if at all.

The pasting code excuse is preposterous. That's a very specific use
case. They could have CODE in the drop down for that specific use case.

[Evolution] Word Wrapping

2017-04-12 Thread Benjamin Selzer
I'm having a program with word wrapping:

https://goo.gl/photos/ZWBMU3CjhvxbA4fA8

I see the option to set the number of characters for word wrapping, but
I don't see where to turn it off. The issue is that my emails look
good to the recipient on a computer, which is wide, but look terrible
on phones because the character width is <71, meaning that the line if
first broken by the phone's screen/program and then broken at 71
characters.

What I would like is for the lines to simply break when the recipients
email program deems it appropriate. That is the way logical text
wrapping seems to work in most email programs.

Setting it to a higher number won't work, because it will just create
the problem on the other end. And I can't really guess what width each
of my recipients phones are.

Thanks.

This email list should be renamed Evolution Circle Jerk. What an absolutely
absurd series of responses. The same group of people with the same
defensive responses to almost every issue. How utterly useless.

The only halfway intelligent response here was the one about creating
groups of folders. Unfortunately, that's a laughably complex workaround for
a ridiculous omission. You clearly couldn't quite understand my email, and
I'll skip the idea, but I appreciate the thought. (And yes, despite the
finagling here, it is a blatant omission.)

In terms of one of you getting the email twice, a smart email client should
have seeded this out. Consider a change.

To those of your suggesting I write the code myself, another utterly
idiotic idea. If I could write the code, I wouldn't have posted my question
here. Are you trying to be stupid?

If I'm sending this email as HTML, I don't care. Deal with it. If I'm
top-posting, I don't care because, frankly, I have no fucking idea what
that is.

Nothing direct. The closest is to define a Search Folder which will
simply "Match All" and you add folders into it. Then you can move
Search Folders at the very top between accounts (see above where to do

Hi,
just out of blue, do you have /usr/bin/ntlm_auth available in your
system? What if you rename it and restart the machine, will it start
working? I remembered, in the light of "[Evolution] Evolution EWS
stpped working after Exchange migration from 2013 to 2016" thread here,
that I also noticed some lockups when the evolution-calendar-factory-

They all use evolution-data-server to get the data from the calendar,
thus, usually, when one doesn't work, then none works. It's not always,
just usually.

[Evolution] Exchange Calendar Stopped Syncing since 3.22.3

2016-12-22 Thread Benjamin Selzer
Updated to 3.22.3, and (I believe) since that update, my Exchange (EWS)
calendar no longer syncs. I haven't been using my Linux install for a
while, and I've added dozens of meetings to my calendar on my Windows
side (same account). Upon returning to Linux, none of them are there.

I have removed and re-added the account via GOA. Mail syncs fine.
However none of my new events will get added to Evolution's calendar.

Nor will they show up in Gnome Calendar, nor in my Shell drop down top
bar calendar. So perhaps the problem is more widespread. Is Gnome
Calendar or GOA broken again?

I'm on Arch Linux.

Thanks,
B.

Re: [Evolution] Right click spelling correction not working in 3.22.2

2016-12-04 Thread Benjamin Selzer
The American/British English depends on which aspell dictionaries you have
installed.

I have found that Evolution will often red underline a correctly spelled
word, but when I right click it, the underline goes away. More continued
frustrations.

However, when a word is actually misspelled, the corrected word in inserted
for me.

That's as far as you can get without upgrading to Ubuntu 16.10. Just
the way Ubuntu works.

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and using evolution 3.20.5.  You get this
from the PPA at Gnome3 Staging: https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+arc
hive/ubuntu/gnome3-staging .  Please make sure that you follow the
instructions.

It is very stable and I have been using for months.

Hi Frank,

there's no chance for a novice to maintain stable releases of Evolution
from upstream on any Ubuntu release, regarding to a much to complex
dependency chain. Even for experienced users it's not worth the effort.
Ubuntu tries to workaround this issue with the snappy approach. I don't
want to go into details, but all those container alike approaches,
snappy is one of them, are frowned upon by most experts. Apart from
this, I seriously doubt that snappy is ready to handle all the required
interface permissions yet, resp. I doubt hat somebody want's to learn
how to handle this. The only solution for you is migrating to another
distro, or at least to run another distro as guest in a virtual
machine.
Somebody perhaps provides a PPA (third party repository) with a more
recent version of Evolution for your Ubuntu release, but a beginner
should be careful with using third party repos.

Regards,
Ralf

Use GOA for Contacts, not Calendar.
Use Evolution [native] for Calendar.

Every day, around 5PM, Evolution loses the ability to connect to my Gmail
Calendar and Contacts. Usually the error is about too many requests, which
makes no sense, because Google allows many more Calendar and Contacts
connects daily than Evolution is making. Odd that it always happens at the
end of the day.

I don't lose the ability to connect to email on Gmail, just the Calendar
and Contacts. Gmail was added via GOA.

I don't have the same behavior with my Exchange account.

Any ideas?

No, I don't mean fixed it, because if I type on a dark theme, it sends that
dark theme to the recipient.

Yes, I agree this behavior can't be right. The funny this was, for a brief
time in 3.21, they had it right. The composer area would stay white in dark
theme, but they it got botched again in 3.22

The most important folder in Gmail (namely ALL MAIL) is one of these
stupid subs. As is SENT, which I often use. It's just annoying. No big
deal though.

I've gotten the problem a couple times now and I can't seem to tie it to

"work" computer uses Ubuntu MATE/Tbird as opposed to my Arch/Evo system.

I'm running Evolution on Arch Linux with this plugin installed. I've
noticed since a last set of updates that it has completely stopped
working. I attempted to do a reinstall with no luck. Has anyone had a
similar issue, and if so does anyone know a fix?

Seemingly the mirror I'm using isn't upgraded, https://www.archlinux.org
/packages/extra/x86_64/evolution/ indeed is 3.22.1-1.
Perhaps, you experience a similar issue and/or soname issues regarding
mixed repos. resp. a partial upgrade, which shouldn't happen.

[Evolution] Cannot Reply/Reply to All (Composer Blank/Frozen)

2016-10-12 Thread Benjamin Selzer
Hello! First post, so be gentle, please.

System is Arch Linux
DE is Gnome 3.22.1 (stable, as of today)
Machine is Chromebook Pixel 2 LS (samus)
Kernel is linux-samus 4.8.2 (linux kernel version is 4.8.1)

Just upgraded from Evolution 3.22.0 from Testing repo to 3.22.1 in stable
repos.

Intermittently, I cannot reply to emails. About 70% of the time, when I
click reply or reply to all, the reply window opens, but the composer part
is blank. No original email. No signature. And I cannot click and type in
there. Then about 30% of the time, it works fine. Compose new email works
fine, however, the window opens slowly. None of this happened in 3.22.0.

It's not a theme issue. I've revered to Gnome default, and it still occurs.

Bug report filed: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772803

Any ideas?

Thanks!
