Re: Trend e-manager opinions/caveats/complexity?

2002-01-05 Thread Chris Haaker

We use it on our DMZ smtp box along with Interscan.
It works great and we get about 1 or 2 false positives a day. My only gripe
with the product is that there is no remote way to release a quaratined
mail, like a central console or something. I have to VNC into the server
that has it, sift through the log and then release it. A central web-console
were I could manage all my e-manager boxes would be nice . . .

Subject: Trend e-manager opinions/caveats/complexity?

 Hello all,

We are looking at getting Trend's E-Manager content filter as an add on to
our Scanmail a/v product to start screening out spam. If you have or are
using E-Manager for Scanmail could you let me know if you would recommend
for or against it and if there are any caveats I need to be aware of? I
have
searched my archives of this list for E-Manager and not found much other
than some people who use it and one person who noted an issue but never
mentioned what it turned out to be due to. I also searched just on content
filtering and spam filtering among others but still didn't see all the
info
 I am after.

We are running Exchange 5.5 SP4 and ScanMail 3.5 on WinNT4 in a single
domain. Although this quarter I plan to get the domain up to Win2k so if
there are issues with Win2k I'd like to know that too. The price for
E-Manager is in our range whereas Mailsweeper etc appear not to be and I
am
very happy with our Scanmail product but want to get a feel for any issues
 with E-Manager.

I also am curious as to the time it takes to baby sit this. If those of
you
using content scanning software (particularly E-Manager but it's probably
similar for all of them) could estimate how much time is required to sort
out the non-spam mail that gets caught in the filters and see that it is
forwarded on to the user it was intended for that would be a big help. I'm
guessing that it takes a bit of tuning of the filters to minimize that but
I've no idea if I'm talking about adding a 5 minutes a week task to my job
or a 5 hours a week (or more) task.

 Thanks very much,

 Ronni

RE: NT4 Domain authnetication

2002-01-05 Thread Mark Harford

You really need to give us a load more info. Is it part of an existing
Ex5.5 set up with an ADC in place? Did you use the ADMT or a third-party
equivalent to migrate the users? Etc, etc.

Mark

Briefly though, you'll need to add the NT4 accounts into the mailbox
permissions of the mailbox-enabled AD accounts you must have created. This
can be done through AD Users and Computers. Ensure that you turn on the
Advanced View and you'll see the necessary options under the Exchange
Advanced Tab of the AD accounts properties.

Subject: NT4 Domain authnetication

I have a customer who has an NT 4 domain and does not want to upgrade it to
AD yet. He does want to use Exchange 2000. We created a seperate AD domain
and installed E2K. Two way trust were created between domains and some test
users were migrated over successfully. The problem is that whenever a user
opens Outlook 2000, they are prompted for a username/password/domainname.
Does anyone know how to correct this?
please email if possible to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or post replies here.
thanks!

Be sure to get an electric chainsaw. The fumes from the gas ones will
knock you out when used indoors. Long story, but yes, I learned from

If you're referring to Exchange 2000, I wouldn't necessarily create
front-end servers just for SMTP. I'd use the SMTP service that comes
with IIS to relay SMTP. You can use front-end servers for HTTP, IMAP

Hi all,

I'm about to configure front-end servers for SMTP, but heard some pretty
distressing news about that today. I heard that inetinfo will crash if
the servers have any information stores of them, but since the stores
generate delivery status msgs, you can't have the FE's as SMTP Gateways
or the machine will start establishing TCP connections to itself
indefinitely.

Apparently there are Q articles out about this, but I haven't read them
yet. I was curious to see who has tried to do this out in the field and
what your experience has been like so far.

TIA,
Karen

RE: Containers

2002-01-05 Thread Ed Crowley

Use containers only to differentiate between types of objects. For
example, you might make containers for:

Users
MS Mail Mailboxes
Services (like Help Desk, Payroll, etc.)
Customers (custom recipients)
Distribution Lists
Public Folders (i.e., GAL entries for them)

So, the answer is a very definite leave all your user mailboxes in one
container. You'll regret it later if you want to move mailboxes from
one container to another because you can't.

In a large Exchange 5.5 environment organization would you place
everyone in the recipients container or make different containers for
organizational levels?

RE: Message Journaling

2002-01-05 Thread Ed Crowley

Pros: You get a copy of everything that's sent.

Cons: It will add load to your server.
It will consume more disk space.
Someone will potentially spend (waste) a great deal of time going
through the data. I hope it isn't you!

I recognize the necessity of such a feature, especially in certain
environments like the securities industry for which the SEC virtually
requires it.

Goodafternoon All,

I have just been asked by my boss to implement message journaling on our
Exchange 5.5/SP4 box.

Can anyone provide any insight on pro's/con's and/or pitfalls to doing
this?

TIA

Re: 2 EXCH 5.5 Servers in 1 site

2002-01-05 Thread John Q

What allows them to talk to each other, i.e. what connector x.400 through
RPC?
Can you tell Exchange which server to put the mailboxes?

Thnaks,
-John Q Jr.
I checked the logs and there was no receipt of mail anyhere between 12:00 -
4:00 PST from msn.

You did however receive mail from a @uophx.edu connection at 15:21:27.

This confirms that you were getting mail at this time.?

You really need to give us a load more info. Is it part of an existing
Ex5.5 set up with an ADC in place? Did you use the ADMT or a third-party
equivalent to migrate the users? Etc, etc.

Mark

Briefly though, you'll need to add the NT4 accounts into the mailbox
permissions of the mailbox-enabled AD accounts you must have created. This
can be done through AD Users and Computers. Ensure that you turn on the
Advanced View and you'll see the necessary options under the Exchange
Advanced Tab of the AD accounts properties.
