Can anyone tell me why when creating a rule to redirect mail to another mailbox out of
the corporate network, that it will only redirect inhouse mail, but any mail coming
from the outside into the corporate network will not be redirected back out?

RE: OWA authorisation delay

2002-01-29 Thread Ed Crowley

I wouldn't put OWA on a proxy server. Instead, I would publish your
internal OWA server through your Proxy server. The reason for that is
that you must pass many more ports between an OWA server and the
back-end Exchange server than you do for straight OWA traffic.

I would install the SMTP Service on your Proxy Server and configure it
to relay your SMTP mail. (See FAQ for more information on that.)

Subject: OWA authorisation delay

All,

Machine 1. NT 4.0 SP 4, Proxy 2.0 SP2, OWA 5.5 SP4

Machine 2. NT 4.0 SP4, Exchange 5.5 SP4

Machine 1 is multi homed with a private and public IP address. OWA is
configured to connect tto the Exchange server on machine 2.

When I enter xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/exchange in a web browser I am presented
with the OWA logon.asp page. I enter an alias in the box and I am then
presented with a security logon immediately. When I add my username and
password and press return it takes at least 2-3 minutes for it to
authorise me and then display my inbox. I am using Basic (clear text)
authentication without SSL. I have scoured the Internet and technet to
no avail. This happens on all accounts using OWA. I used the
installation guides from www.swinc.com and they mention nothing about a
delay in the troubleshooting. I can access other OWA servers properly
using the same remote access machines. Any help much appreciated.

Turn on protocol logging and see what particular command is causing the

I have two servers and only want to send mail outbound through one. And
accept mail for only one, then have it transfer, MTA, to the Primary server
where mail is stored.
But I am having this issue, because a users wants a POP connection to one
server and I get this error.
Right now I have one system accepting mail then transfer it over and the
other one sends.

Did you restore it in a location where it had access to the production
network (PDC/BDC) or take a BDC offline and promote it to PDC? Otherwise,
it doesn't have access to validate the Service Account. It also has to run
off the exact same user account. Check Technet on how to change the Service
Account. Also Sounds to me like you needs to be readin' the Disaster
Recovery White Paper. You can find it here (link may wrap):

I need some help with the following problem
I have a client that had a total crash (we came in after the crash) of his
server and has lost all of his exchange. There is only one item that this
client requires and that is a public folder with all of his contact details
for a news letter (2000 - 3000 Contacts). We managed to recover a copy of
the priv.edb, pub.edb and dir.edb and build a new server with the old site
name and organisation. we then ran eseutil and isinteg -patch and all seems
to be OK The system attendant and the directory service started.(a good
start) The problem is that when we run up the other services we get Event
9994 and error 2186 (both relate to logon issue) which is the service
account and password are incorrect. We have changed the account to services
and also to admin but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this

Do a default export of mailboxes to a CSV file via the Exchange admin
program. Open the CSV file in Excel and sort by Primary NT Account (not
exact wording, but it's close). Delete all rows EXCEPT for the ones that
have UNKNOWN as the account.

Add one column, header is MODE and insert the word "DELETE" (without the
quotes) in that column in all rows.

Please make sure that the accounts shown in the spreadsheet are the ones to
be deleted, UNKNOWN can come up if there is no trust between two domains
that are served by your Exchange org. You also want to make sure you're not
deleting any service mailboxes that wouldn't have an account assigned
anyway.

Save your CSV file, then import it. All the mailboxes marked with DELETE
will disappear.

"The item could not be saved to this folder. The folder has been deleted or
moved or you do not have permission. Do you want to save a copy in the
default folder for this item."

The tree structure for this folder is Public Folders>All Public
Folders>MyFolder>SubFolder. I am the owner of both MyFolder and SubFolder. I
can create new contacts, copy existing ones and do everything else 'normal'
in this folder, except create a DL.

Any ideas ?

Thanks heaps,

Tim

RE: Exchange behind an apache proxy server

2002-01-29 Thread Chuck Bryant

I didn't, but I read about it at
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&selm=2prG6.1195%24O7.30461%40news1.mts
.net

It seemed overly complex for my needs so I decided to do it by reverse NAT
(ipchains & ipmasqadm mfw) instead. This also gaurantees that OWA uses SSL

Use Nmap or some other port scanner on your network. Probably best to scan
from the outside to find out what is most vulnerable, but a scan from the

I have a client that had a total crash (we came in after the crash) of his

client requires and that is a public folder with all of his contact details
for a news letter (2000 - 3000 Contacts).
We managed to recover a copy of the priv.edb, pub.edb and dir.edb and build
a new server with the old site name and organisation.
we then ran eseutil and isinteg -patch and all seems to be OK
The system attendant and the directory service started.(a good start)
The problem is that when we run up the other services we get Event 9994 and
error 2186 (both relate to logon issue) which is the service account and

Re: Exchange behind an apache proxy server

2002-01-29 Thread Daniel Chenault

There is a KB article on which ports to open. Putting OWA outside the
firewall is absolutely no different than having Outlook outside the
firewall; OWA and Outlook both use MAPI to connect to the server. A VPN
would be a better and more secure solution.

RE: IMS - problem?

2002-01-29 Thread Mellott, Bill

thx
Well I rebooted the server to the unpopularity of users in the company.
I was getting in the event viewer:

An RPC communications error occurred.
Unable to bind over RPC. The locality table (LTAB) index is 76.
Windows NT error code: 1722. [BASE IL MAIN BASE 1 500] (12)

type messages, I could NOT send e-mail though I could receive. SO a trip to
MS KB revealed tech doc 170056

I could ping everything as doc stated..so Rebooted.

Error went away...but still no outgoing e-mail.

YES Firewall-Pix. Could ping to Pix internal Interface but not outside to
anybody.

Clear Xlate

fixed it.

E-mail now flows, brain is burnt.

Will continue on with Ed's FAQ...

thx
bill

PS Oh and all this on top of installing NAI GrpSh451 HF7
I love them, it grabbed 4430 emails Sunday to Monday for no good reason,
reload superdat was their answer.
Then it still didn't work right, so very late early this morning
unload/reload to fix it.still it grabbed 50 e-mails for no good reason.
UNTIL! drum roll pleaseA tech had me add a reg entry to fix it.
I did mention that the 4400+ e-mails..yup have to go thru one by one AND the
user HAS too send me the e-mail with the ALTER.TXT to find out what goes
with who.
Mom said if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

2 default recipient policies

2002-01-29 Thread Jonathan Barrie

I have Exchange 2000 running in mixed mode as we are slowly cutting
everything over from 5.5. I've run into a problem where email addresses
are not being generated properly. When someone receives an email it has
the what looks like the X400 address with the SMTP attached on the end.

I've tracked the problem down to having 2 recipient policies. The default
one is correct and is set at lowest priority. Another one is there with
the incorrect filter and is set at highest priority. Unfortunately I
cannot delete it.

Is there any trick to get rid of this so I am only left with the default?

RE: Primary NT Account\Unknown

2002-01-29 Thread John Matteson

Could some share with me an easy way to identify and delete all Exchange 5.5

user's mailboxes after the NT account is deleted.

Any help would be appreciated...

E2K - E2K undeliverable

2002-01-29 Thread Mail

We have a problem with e-mails sent to a few different E2K-servers that
bounce with the following message:

Sending e-mails to other brands of mailservers (including E5.5) works
just fine but not sending to some E2K-servers.

We´re running a Small Business Server 2000 behind a Watchguard firewall.
The latest servicepacks are installed.

Sounds familiar to anyone?
I have searched through technet several times without finding anything
relevant.

RE: IMS woes

2002-01-29 Thread Michel, David

Good point here. My original MTA was trashed most likely because of Norton.
Our IMC is on a web server which I really don't do anything with as far as
administration. I deliberately never installed anything other than Antigen
on that server but unbeknownst to me, the webmaster had manually mapped a
drive from his workstation and was scanning both c$ and d$ with Norton. As
far as PSS and I could tell, this is probably what hosed it in the first
place.

Accessing Recurring Appointments

2002-01-29 Thread John Best

I have written some code(asp, vbscript) that contacts an exchange server
and collects
a users calendar for a given week.

This works super.

The problem I am having is that recurring appointments created in
Outlook 2000 aren't showing up, until they have been viewed in Outlook
web access.

Recurring appointments created in Outlook web access show up straight
away.

The sql I am using is

strQ = "SELECT ""DAV:href"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:calendar:busystatus"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:calendar:instancetype"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:calendar:dtstart"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:calendar:location"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:calendar:dtend"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:httpmail:subject"", " & _
" ""urn:schemas:calendar:alldayevent"" " & _
" FROM scope('shallow traversal of """ & strURL & """') " &_
"WHERE (""urn:schemas:calendar:dtstart"" >= CAST(""" &
formattedDateStart & """ as 'dateTime')) " &_
" AND (""urn:schemas:calendar:dtstart"" <= CAST(""" & formattedDateEnd &
""" as 'dateTime')) " &_
" ORDER BY
""urn:schemas:calendar:dtstart"",""urn:schemas:calendar:alldayevent""
desc "

Anyone have any idea why recurring appointments would not be returned
until they had been viewed in OWA?

Cheers

John Best

When they reply to it, that junk gets put in the reply-to field. ANy

Primary NT Account\Unknown

Could some share with me an easy way to identify and delete all Exchange 5.5
mailboxes that has an Unknown Primary NT Account? The group responsible for
adding and deleting users throughout the organization has not been removing
user's mailboxes after the NT account is deleted.

Any help would be appreciated...

RE: How to setup multiple E2k Servers? -- Bounced Messages

2002-01-29 Thread Myles, Damian

Have you set a smart host on one of the SMTP Virtual Servers
?(SMTP|Properties|Delivery|Advanced)... ensure direct connect box is checked.

An incorrectly configured SMTP Connector can also cause problems as some of the
settings within override those on the virtual server.

Where are the NDR's occurring ..

Try enabling message tracking it's most likely that you've unwittingly checked a
box somewhere :)

Subject: How to setup multiple E2k Servers? -- Bounced Messages

My org recently migrated from a 2-site, 1 Exchange 5.5 Org to E2K w/TWO exchange
servers that are in 2 physical locations.

Previously, I had 1 E55 server that had the single Internet Mail Server while the 2nd
server got mail replicated to it.

Now, we have the 2 E2k servers w/2 SMTP virtual servers w/1 SMTP connector. We can
send mail externally from both servers and receive external email but we cannot send
mail to each other. We're getting bouncing mail between two servers.

Can someone help with this...I'm not sure if I need a routing group or my bridgehead
servers are wrong or what.

NOTE: The servers are physically separated by routers but they serve the same domain,
example: abc.com

Any clues?

Terry

I neglected to mention that I was installing via the 2 user "terminal
server admin mode." When installing Exchange server in this fashion the
registry key points to the local machine name for the domain, so
Exchange cannot tell it is in a domain.

So you modify:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon/DefaultDomainN
ame
to the domain name instead of the machine name.

Viola!

GFI Mail Essentials and Exchange 5.5

2002-01-29 Thread Nick Goodman

Hi all, Wondering if anyone is running a similar combination.

I currently run Exch 5.5 and a seperate POP 3 server for internet mail due
to some past issues, long story. Anyways I'm looking at using GFI Mail
essentials as my Mail gateway and forwarding all mail to the exchange
server. I was also thinking about using IIS's SMTP instead of Mail
Essentials and just running A/V on the desktop for that one then forwarding
all mail to Exchange.

Can anyone share their experiences with me with GFI? Thanks.

That procedure is called an MTAWipe. The old mtadata files that you have not
yet copied over contain undelivered mail; there's an article on how to
manually replay MTA .DAT files.

IMS - rpoblem?

2002-01-29 Thread Mellott, Bill

I'm doing the FAQ...Appx A Ed Crowley move server.

I'm at the point of doing the IMS, I have created the new IMS on the New
server.

I am not able to telnet to the new server on port 25.

RE: Quote about most virus being spread by email

2002-01-29 Thread Chris Scharff

I usually look to Ferris or the like for quotes rather than Ed, but Ed's not
bad either for statistics made up on the fly.

Personally I don't think you should implement antivirus software on your
mail servers. Given the recent stories on the marked rise in hacking attacks
of businesses and universities, I think it's a good idea for the Cal State
system to serve as a honeypot to distract would be hackers, crakers, phreaks
and script kiddies away from the rest of us.

Subject: OT: Quote about most virus being spread by email

I am trying to make the stongest case on the need for email server virus
protection. AMAZINGLY, my warnings and the recent rash of email virus
still
hasn't convinced them. I am looking for your experience, but more
importanta
quote from Ed Crowley. I believe the quote was along the lines that "If
an
Administrator would just protect their email servers with anti-virus
software this would block 99% of virus from spreading" Does anyone know
the
source of this?

As soon as I restarted the MTA and the IMS all of the messages appeared in
the queue and we sent successfully.

If the messages still are not going out and are stuck in the IMS queue then
you probably don't have a choice. If the messages aren't urgent and can be
resent by your users (since there are only 5 of them) then it's not much of
a gamble to do it. However, our particular problem got progressively worse
over the course of a day whereas we were originally able to get mail flowing
by stopping/restarting all services. We then had to actually reboot the
server then later even that didn't work and the mail just stopped flowing
altogether. That's when we called PSS and figured out exactly what was
wrong and followed those exact steps.

We had a very similar problem (albeit without the VPN piece) and here was
the final solution, step-by-step from PSS when all was said and done. Turned
out our problem had nothing to do with the IMC but was, in fact, the MTA.
Maybe it will help. Hope it does.

Resolution:
===
Stopped the MTA.
Renamed the MtaData directory (which we have not deleted yet). Copied the
MTADATA directory from the Exchange 5.5 CD, selected ALL files and removed
the read only attribute. Cut and pasted ALL the *.DAT files into the
relevant \\Exchsrvr\Mtadata directory. Cut and pasted the remaining files
into the relevant \\Exchsrvr\Mtadata directory. Ran an MtaCheck /v 3 times.
Re-applied service pack 4 for Exchange and restarted the MTA and IMC.

Exchange 5.5 SP4, NT 4.0 SP6a

I have a second IMS that I use to send mail securley to clients. I've run
into an issue that I have never seen before. We are able to receive
messages from all of our clients without a problem however, they do not
receive any messages from us. This started happening 2 days ago and up
until that point everything has been working fine for a little over a year.

The client connections are all configured VPN tunnels through my firewall
directly to my IMS server. I can telnet from my IMS server and from my
firewall to port 25 of every client's mail server and successfully send
messages to them via that approach. This tells me that the tunnel is up and
working. Whenever I send a message from outlook, the clients never receive
the message. The messages do not appear in the queue and no undeliverables
are received. My event logs are sparodic but do show messages being sent to
the client sites as well does my firewall logs.

I have to believe that this problem is on my side because we have only 5
clients using this IMS for secure mail and non of them can receive messages
from us.

Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this and where to look?

OT: Quote about most virus being spread by email

2002-01-29 Thread Paul Done

I am trying to make the stongest case on the need for email server virus
protection. AMAZINGLY, my warnings and the recent rash of email virus still
hasn't convinced them. I am looking for your experience, but more importanta
quote from Ed Crowley. I believe the quote was along the lines that "If an
Administrator would just protect their email servers with anti-virus
software this would block 99% of virus from spreading" Does anyone know the
source of this?

Paul

IMS woes

2002-01-29 Thread Friese, Casey

Need info - outsourcing recovery

2002-01-29 Thread Ali Wilkes (IT)

Does anyone know of a company (preferably in the U.S.) that will perform a
recovery from an IBM magstar 3590E using ADSM v3r7lev4.0?

I've been calling everyone I can find, no one I have found yet does the IBM
magstar.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Can't forward meeting requests.

2002-01-29 Thread Smith, Calvin C

We are a large user of Exchange. There are several individual Exchange 5.5
organizations. If a meeting request comes from one particular organization,
the user can't forward it. They get the error, "You do not have the
permission to send the message on behalf of the specified user" Of course,
we are not trying to send on behalf, we are trying to forward the meeting
request. This problem happens with one organization with meeting requests
going both ways. This organization is in a domain that does not have any
trust relationship with ours.

Does anybody have a suggestion on how to work around this?

OWA authorisation delay

2002-01-29 Thread Mark Condron

All,

When I enter xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/exchange in a web browser I am presented with
the OWA logon.asp page. I enter an alias in the box and I am then presented
with a security logon immediately. When I add my username and password and
press return it takes at least 2-3 minutes for it to authorise me and then
display my inbox. I am using Basic (clear text) authentication without SSL.
I have scoured the Internet and technet to no avail. This happens on all
accounts using OWA. I used the installation guides from www.swinc.com and
they mention nothing about a delay in the troubleshooting. I can access
other OWA servers properly using the same remote access machines. Any help
much appreciated.

TIA

Tried that. Damm no luck. Really fustrating. If it's a setting on the

for me.

Maybe check the setting in Internet Message Formats below the

"Apply content settings to non-Mapi clients".

Subject: Directory Sync Problems on setup.

Listers,

I have a peculiar problem and I would like to share it with you guys,
just in case you might have come across it.

I have a customer who's Exchange 5.5(sp4) Org is split over two sites.
Currently a server in each site. They are connected via 128k link and
directory replication works fine. In a bid to upgrade a site, I'm
trying to add a second server in the second site. It's something I've
done before and I'm familiar with what should be done.

Initially, I tried to install the second exchange server on a Win2k
Domain controller (Emulating as the PDC whilst in mixed mode). The
first server in the site is running on an NT4.0 SP6a BDC by the way.

When running set-up on the new server I chose the option to join an
existing site and give the password. It likes this and continues. It
gets to the point where it replicates the directory with the other
server in the site and fails with error code " 0xc1030b11 ". It fails
the set-up and now I'm stuck.

I've tried this on 3 different servers in the domain. 2 of which are
Win2k and the other was NT4.0 - same problem.

In the event log I get an error in the application from MSExhcangeSetup
Event ID 2013 - Replication Configuration.

" An error occurred adding replica of naming context
'/o=SHG/ou=SUNGBR02/cn=Microsoft DMD' to server '51205SVR001' from
server '51208SVR001'. <<0xc1030b11 - A connection could not be made to
the remote directory service, possibly due to network failure. Be sure
that both directory services are running and that your network is
available, and then try connecting again.>> "

I've tried different switches/lan cables etc.

Any ideas ?

Help is greatly appreciated

Did you restore it in a location where it had access to the production
network (PDC/BDC) or take a BDC offline and promote it to PDC?
Otherwise,
it doesn't have access to validate the Service Account. It also has to
run
off the exact same user account. Check Technet on how to change the
Service

Hi All
I need some help with the following problem
I have a client that had a total crash (we came in after the crash) of
his
server and has lost all of his exchange. There is only one item that
this
client requires and that is a public folder with all of his contact
details
for a news letter (2000 - 3000 Contacts).
We managed to recover a copy of the priv.edb, pub.edb and dir.edb and
build
a new server with the old site name and organisation.
we then ran eseutil and isinteg -patch and all seems to be OK
The system attendant and the directory service started.(a good start)
The problem is that when we run up the other services we get Event 9994
and
error 2186 (both relate to logon issue) which is the service account and
password are incorrect. We have changed the account to services and also
to
admin but to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get this information back
Thanks

Well this is off topic but is showing up as many users have used Netscape

When a user sends mail from OWA E2K/SP2 to a user that retrieves the email

gets there but the winmail.dat file is ther regardless if there is an
attached file or not. When checking mail using other clients such as
Outlook, Outlook Express or Hotmail, everything is fine. I checked the Web
client's DLL's to insure they are indeed 6.04.4720.60 or later.

It's only Netscape clients retreiving mail sent by OWA E2K. I have the IMS
setting at default. I set it at both plain text and HTML formating, still
the same results. Could not find anything yet on Netscape's site.

RE: alternative to exchange (iMail ? )

2002-01-29 Thread Jim Brady

For a long list of reasons why you should be using Exch2k, read
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/compare/R5Comparison.asp
and http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/compare/ZDLotus.asp

For a short list of reasons why IBM :) says you should be using Domino,
read http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/SG245167.html (chapter 2) and
http://www.lotus.com/homepage.nsf/(search)/search?OpenDocument&exchange%
20comparison

In short, iMail is more resource intensive on the backend and a costlier
solution than OWA (unless you have a room full of available RS/6000's).

Hi

For on project where the licensing of MS make the use of Ex 2000 not
possible, I must go with another messaging platform

It's may be not the right place but i'm sure you can help me

What do you think of iMail ? stable ? it has a web interface for eMail
and
calendering.

It's for an ASP project where external user would get their eMAil and
calendar.

JF
Thanks !

Hi,

I don't watch the open connections through the firewall that much, but there
seems to be a lot of strange ports opening etc... Any strange behaviour
anywhere else?

RE: SPAM Blocking List

2002-01-29 Thread Chris Scharff

One of these days I'll work out the exact number of possible valid SMTP
address combinations. Gotta be well over a trillion I'd imagine and a
spammer can forge any one of them. For the long run, blocking by sender is,
in my experience an exercise in futility.

Yes, you can use an "OR".

Re: LDAP access questions

2002-01-29 Thread missy koslosky

LDAP = Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It's a method of accessing
the directory, and thus doesn't perform the same function as MAPI, which is
the Messaging API.

I just saw an e-mail in ths group about LDAP access to Exchange. I hate to
be a dummy but I don't know squat about LDAP access. Are their advantages to
this over MAPI?

RE: Exchange 2000 and OWA...logon.asp is gonzo?

2002-01-29 Thread Chris Scharff

No, not really. There are some circumstances where it'll happen, especially
with multiple PF servers.

But what I'm really talking about is a single server which happens to host
both a website and the Exchange server. The pop-up for E2K is a bit ugly for
the average home user when compared to the logon screen one gets at hotmail
or any other webmail provider I can think of.

I ran into the double login when a user had to download an attached file

using OWA. It just happened today. So this is normal?
