RE: EMail addresses not being created on new mailboxes
You are likely having some problem with the Recipient Update Service. Did you install any third-party connector, such as RightFax? Do you find an Application Event Log entry telling you of a missing DLL? Do you have a Recipient Update Service defined for the Active Directory domain in question? Do you have a recipient policy defined that applies to the recipients? If none of these apply, search TechNet for Recipient Update Service or RUS. Mailtraq question
Hi All In a proposal to a client I suggested an Exchange environment. The client, after considering cost primarily, asked about Mailtraq. I must admit I'm not familiar with the product. I have read up on the web about it. It seems to rely on a web based client a lot, but has anybody got any real life experience with this product? Any views? There doesn't appear to be much info on the actual inner workings of the product, nor any disaster recovery. RE: Restore Exchange 2000 IS?
Depends on what you need :) The priv.edb and priv.stm should give you all mail that has been committed to the databases, but will not give you mail that has been received since that time. Also, having the same server name is not quite as important, but having the same org name and same Admin Group and Storage Group is what is important. Having the same server name should be absolutely fine though. Since you are not doing a typical restore though, you will probably have to stop the Exchange services, then replace the files. I also wouldn't be surprised if you may find that you have to run eseutil and/or isinteg to get the database mounted. Before running those though, try and re-start the services and then take note of any errors you receive. Also, before running eseutil or isinteg, make sure that you still have your backup copy of the databases in case something happens to them while running either of those utilities. RE: Virtual Memory error
Brian, Recently someone had the same issues as you and the following was posted here - Here is something from Marc Stanton (Microsoft) Here is a useful checklist for VM problems that should be able to help solve your problems 1. Check whether this is Win2K Server or Advanced Server. If it's Server, then make sure that the /3GB switch is not in the boot.ini. If this is Advanced Server and there is more than 1Gb of physical RAM installed, ensure that /3GB does appear in the boot.ini 2. Look at the app log.are you seeing 9582 warnings (i.e. 32Mb block available) or 9582 errors (i.e. 16Mb block available). 3. Are the 9582's being accompanied by other out of memory errors such as 12800 events. If so, then you probably have users calling up the support desk asking why their mail isn't working. If user experience is good, then the 9582 may be relatively benign, but should still be investigated for possible action. 4. Look at the MSExchangeIS | VM Largest Block Size perfmon counter .I find this is the best counter to try figure out if something is wrong. You can look at this in realtime to get some data, but if you want to spot trends and figure out if memory is being released, then log this counter for 1 min intervals and collect about 18-24 hours worth. Look at the 'Minimum' value to see what the dip is. Don't worry if this value appears to be low, our own E2K servers at Microsoft were running at 55Mb as the largest block size. 5. Be aware that other store-related processes like virus scanning can tip the threshold. For example, at one customer, by enabling MDB scanning, the VM block would dip below 32Mb and thus the 9582's were generated. However, we only dipped slightly under 32Mb and user perf was absolutely fine. Additionally, during the night, the VM block would grow and the 9582's would stop. This is a classic example of a benign 9582 .as long as user perf is good and the VM block grows again during quiet times. 6. Unfortunately, some scenarios will dictate that you need to do something to get rid of the 9582's .pulling the MDB scanner off (if running) will probably do the trick, but this is a band-aid, not the solution. First of all, you really need to make sure that the server is running Exchange SP3. At various customers, we saw massive VM improvements once SP3 was applied. If you're running on a cluster, also make sure that Q315771 is installed. You'll also want to get the latest scsiport.sys driver install. The version which comes with Win2K SP2 is known to fragment VM (see Q311901 for more details) 7. If you're still seeing 9582's then you need to perform a reg tweak. This tweak is okay as long as there is a decent amount of RAM available in the server. Look at Memory | Available Bytes .if you have more than a couple hundred megs, then you're fine. This is the parameter that ITG runs with: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshold=262144 8. At this stage, things should be on the up. For example, by doing all the above, a customer was able to re-enable MDB scanning and still only dip to 348Mb as the VM Largest Block. If you're still seeing issues, then you're either dealing with a heavily loaded system, or a leaky application. If you suspect a leaky app, take a look at Process | Private Bytes | Store to see if this is growing over a period of time. If you suspect the system is overloaded, then there should be other giveaways (such as high CPU utilization). 9. If the 9582's have still not disappeared, then take a look at your Physical Disk | Disk Queue Lengths for database and log drives (you'll need diskperf -y to get these stats). The disk queue length should never be consistently above the number of spindles in the array. You will of course see peaks, and these can range into the low hundreds, but this is fine. If disk queue lengths are up into 300+ and beyond pretty consistently then you have a disk bottleneck somewhere. If you determine that the disk is good, then you can lower the ESE buffer from 850 to 800Mb and get some more VM to play with This is the msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax value that is outlined in the Quick Tuning Guide. Note: Many customers with large systems actually up this value from 0.85Gb to 1.2Gb to get additional perf, however if you're VM bound, then it's much better to lower the value. 10. If after all this, things are still looking bad, you need to find other ways of reducing VM consumption. For example, what is the SG / MDB configuration? A customer having massive VM problems had 4 Storage Groups hosting a total of 8 databases. We got that down to 3 storage groups and they went away .sometimes the fourth will tip the server over the edge. This is certainly true for Exchange 2000 SP2 and under. SP3 this is not as big of deal 11. If all else fails, you will need to get a VADUMP (E2K reskit) on the store and contact PSS

RE: The spam that gets through
If it gets past the database of known spam (we use SurfControl), then it also undergoes a keyword scan. Sometimes this blocks legitimate mail, which is a PITA. I've removed myself from the keyword scanning, as I was spending more time getting messgaes released than I was dealing with spam. It doesn't bother me to delete a few messages. If it gets past the keyword scan, then sometimes we evaluate the text, and we add in specific rules to combat that particular message. For example, we can't see much communication involving septic tanks within our normal day-to-daty activities. :0) The manual adding is not very scalable I admit. But SurfControl's spam datbase is catching 3x the amount of our previous product. A bit off topic - Multiple apps on 1 server
All, Excuse me for the slightly off-topic inquiry. We are currently rolling out Exchange 2000 - we have about 10,000 users in several locations - 150-300 users per office on average. We run the Exchange 2000 servers also as Domain Controllers, with the addition of DNS and DHCP. Everything works just fine, but now the CTO wants to start doing an Office in a Box concept - where we load tons of additional apps on this server. Sort of like Small Business Server - but with additional licenses (more than 50), and not all the apps are Microsoft. I thought we were being a bit risky having Exchange on the same server as a DC, DNS, and DHCP. Does anyone have any advice on this? Bad idea? Terrible idea? Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus Software for Exchange
Hello All. Current Configuration: Exchange 5.5 Windows 2000 Advanced Server (One server) OWA CA AntiVirus CA ArcServe (w/blb) 19GB IS 900 Users Currently I run all services for Exchange on one server. I know, I know, and I have paid the price more than one late night coming in to reboot because services are failing. Most problems came when ArcServe started the brick-level backups (again I knowcannot convince Mgmt. to stop brick level backupseven with 30 day retention settings). When the BLB started it would knock out OWA or worse, slowing backups to a crawl taking 36 hours to do a brick level backup. Also, when doing virus updates, brick level backups would again fail. When it comes down to it, probably too many services running on one server. I have recently convinced my management to purchase another server for Exchange so that I may move some services from the primary server to a second server. The services that I will be moving to the additional server (additional server will be outside the firewallprimary server inside firewall) are OWA, IIS/HTTP, SSL, SMTP Gateway and the IMC. My question: I am not sure what kind of Antivirus and Antispam software to purchase and where to put it. As I understand it, Computer Assoc. does not sell a product that will scan just the IMC. Trend has a product called Interscan Messaging Security Suite that will scan the IMC box as mail comes and goes through it. Trend's ScanMail for Exchange scans the IS which is good but do I really need it if I am scanning on the second Exchange server IMC? I would appreciate your comments positive or negative. RE: A bit off topic - Multiple apps on 1 server
Bad, bad, bad idea. To paraphrase Clint Eastwood, do you feel lucky, well do you. There can be some serious repercussions with this one. You have 10,000 users on an Exchange servers in multiple sites and now he's suggesting that your mail server function as an application server, hosting multiple apps. What about performance, what about backups? You will need to run an Exchange backup and a standard file backup. You might need two versions of a virus software, one for your files and one for Exchange specifically. Oh this is the domain controller. Don't forget the application that needs to be rebooted once its installed and knocks off 10,000 users or even an application that overwrites certain dlls and Exchange no longer loads. These apps gonna' share the same drive with the priv and pub? I could go on, but you recall Renfields laugh when he was on the brink of madness, he, he, he he. Sorry, I got carried way. Personally I like Trend stuff, it tends to just work, and work very well IMHO. I'd look at Scanmail as it will scan everything, inbound/outbound, internal, external and can be used on as many Exchange servers as you like so long as your licence covers the relevent number of users. Anti spam is a little trickier as it depends on your budget and a few other things. If you have an old machine spare I'd really suggest spending a short while investigating Spamassassin - downside is it's a *nix product so you need to get your head around more things, but for the price (totally free except for the time and a box to run it on) you will not do better. I'd also suggest a look at Xwall from www.dataenter.at, cheap and works well IME - I don't have any experience of the really expensive products, but I'd suggest spamassassin is as good as any of them if you have the time to spare. regards, Paul _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I dont have that many users myself...but I did a while ago and change to Trend's Suite of products Desktop-Servers-Exchange-IMSS(gateway) after having run Mcafee for 3 years here and looked at Symantec and Antigen, and a couple others.. IF I had the budget... Hands down I would have used Antigen for my Exchange and SMTP gateway. And Trend for everything else. As I sit I have trend for everything..and Must say I like it VERY much... features are really nice, product is good to excellent. I have only found one problem/feature with IMSS which is potentially a significant problem for me. Outlook Message Indents
I have a user who is having a problem with the indents on forwarded mail. Have you ever received a forwarded email that is hard to read because of the corruption from indents? The text is scattered and hard to follow. Is this happening because a user on the other end is sending from Outlook Express? Is this something that only happens in OE or can it happen in Outlook 2000? How do I fix it? RE: Restore Exchange 2000 IS?
While running ESEUTIL /P I am seeing this in the log... (see below) Hopefully the repair will work and the darn thing will mount. Dbtime is larger than database dbtime -Original Message- From: Ben Winzenz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 10:36 AM To: Exchange Discussions Depends on what you need :) The priv.edb and priv.stm should give you all mail that has been committed to the databases, but will not give you mail that has been received since that time. Re: A bit off topic - Multiple apps on 1 server
Robert, Well, anything is possible, but this sort of configuration is certainly not recommended. An Exchange Server is an Exchange Server, a DC is a DC etc. Its generally thought of as a bad idea, however there are always costs associated with deploying larger numbers of servers for (comparatively) smaller regional offices. That being said, I have done similar things (although with smaller offices), and provided you have all the backup / AV and DR strategies in place, its not a huge issue. Performance and scaling of the server will be paramount to the configuration. For a 150-300 user office it could potentially be a bit of a squeeze to get all the apps on a single box and still provide the required levels of service, however the following is a configuration I've used that has worked in the past. Dual 2.4/2.8 GHz processors 1-2gb RAM RAID Controller, with up to 6 x36gb drives Software installed was Windows 2000, running AD, DNS, DHCP, WINS Exchange 2000 Oracle File and Print Server This was for an office of up to about 50 staff, and the performance levels were quite acceptable. Obviously the recommended Exchange configuration (mirror set, mirror set, RAID 5) wasn't possible in the hardware being used, however Exchange hasn't seemed to be affected (there is obviously a performance hit, but its been negligible). There are risks associated with doing this sort of config, but as long as you are aware of them, and have contingency plans in place, you should be ok. For example Exchange and SQL aren't very good bedfellows, and need optimisation on both sides to make sure the performance is appropiate for both applications. G. - Original Message - From: Miller, Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Exchange Discussions [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2003 3:39 AM Subject: A bit off topic - Multiple apps on 1 server All, Excuse me for the slightly off-topic inquiry. RE: Brick level backups - legal disclaimers
Well I am not a legal speagle by any means, but the disclaimer issue it bad joke. The true responsibility of who the message went to is in the hands of the sender. If the message was addressed correctly then the need for disclaimers would be a non-issue. Sorry I watched this thread long enough that I had to put my two cents in there. I find it hard that anyone should accept the burden of responsibility for receiving an electronic message that was sent to them by mistake. And those disclaimers that try to shift the burden of responiblity from the shoulders of the sender to the reciever are a sad attempt at just that. -Original Message- From: Steve Molkentin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 3:34 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Brick level backups - legal disclaimers What about Klingon and Elvish? Just because no-one ever reads disclaimers doesn't mean that they are not legally applicable - when was the last time you read the MS license agreement when installing software? Error on Outlook 2000
Have a user that is using Outlook 2000 accessing an Exchange 2000 environment. While just sitting there will pop up with a memory error. Load that same user on a different machine creat a new profile same thing. I was thinking of exporting his mail to a pst killing his mailbox then create a new one. RE: A bit off topic - Multiple apps on 1 server
I don't personally like the idea but it's what Small Business Server is all about, albeit for a smaller office population. Ed Crowley MCSE+I MVP Protecting the world from PSTs and bricked backups. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Miller, Robert Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 10:39 AM To: Exchange Discussions All, Excuse me for the slightly off-topic inquiry.
