RE: RUS not working to child domain?

2003-07-25 Thread Joe Pochedley
Chris,

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it this morning and Domainprep ran
quite quickly (much more quickly than I've ever seen it run when truly
prepping a domain for the first time)...

Unfortunately the problem persists. Further suggestions would be warmly
welcomed.

When one of our PAs puts an appointment into someone's diary, the
appointment moves forward by one hour. This has happened with two
different
user's calendars. All the PCs and the Exchange (5.5 SP4) server are on
GMT.
In one case it did occur to me than an out of sync iPaq might be causing
the
problem, but that's extremely unlikely to be the case (the owner and the
iPaq are away at the moment so I can't check).

Is there any good reason why this might be happening? The Exchange
server
is the only server in the site. I have had other people complain that
their
messages are time-stamped one hour ahead, but I've never really been
able to
explain it.

RE: RUS not working to child domain?

2003-07-25 Thread Neil Hobson
4 commons ways RUS can break are below. They may not all be appropriate
to you, but I've cut pasted them from a word doc of mine. :-)

1) RUS configuration references a deleted DC or E2K server, or the
servers defined in RUS configuration are flakey at best. Browse both
entries and choose alternates, if available.

2) Inheritable permissions are removed on an OU and the RUS is no longer
able to reach the objects within it. (Q297124)

3) RUS is unable to generate email addresses because it is unable to
locate a third party email address generator (DLL file). This can occur
in mixed environments where an Exchange 5.5 server had fax software or
the like installed. Exchange 2000 builds its recipient policies based
on Ex55 site addressing (which includes the third party address). Since
the DLL does not exist on the E2K server used by the RUS, the RUS will
fire Event IDs 2035, 2037, and 2027 if MSExchangeAL
logging is set to max. (Q286356)

4) If the RUS encounters a distribution list that has its membership
hidden, it will not be able to stamp it with mail attributes and will go
to sleep. (Q287137)

Strange OWA 5.5 issue

2003-07-25 Thread Lockmer, Amy
Hello all, I have a bizarre OWA 5.5 SP4 issue regarding hard deletes from
the Inbox. A user that uses OWA 5.5 exclusively marks items for deletion
from the Inbox, then selects the Delete Marked Items button. These items
will be moved to her Deleted Items folder. When she does this, though the
remaining mail items in the Inbox are hard deleted. They never touch the
Deleted Items folder. I am able to login to the mailbox and use Recover
Deleted Items to retrieve the mail for her.

Normally I would think this was a something the user is doing, but since the
problem happens in OWA and the mail never hits Deleted Items, it makes me
think something else is happening. Also, this problem has happened to the
same user more than once. Is it even possible to hard delete mail items
using OWA? The version of IE is 5.0, would that have anything to do with
it?

I appreciate any feedback on this situation.

Thanks,
Amy

User sent a message on 3rd July with a Deferred Delivery date of 31st July.
The message was sent on the 15th!
There was one server restart on the 7th. Can't see anything else that may
have done it. Has anyone seen this happen before with Exchange 5.5 Sp4 ?
Client is Outlook 2000.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Exchange cluster node loses sight of DC and dies

2003-07-25 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
The last couple of days we had a couple of incidents when an Exchange
2000 cluster node crapped out and did not fail over. We had to
completely shut it down in order for it to release resources and fail
over.

After the fact we checked the event logs and saw that it was having
problems seeing the domain controllers. There were a lot of RFR and NSPI
errors.

The server ran fine for a long time before this started happening. The
most recent change was applying the MS Security patch
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

the patch was applied Monday night. The node started misbehaving on
Wednesday morning.

Could this be a result of the patch?

Has anyone seen anything similar?

Thanks!

Error code 5 is access denied. I'd try running either filemon or regmon
from sysinternals. Maybe that will shed some light on what is causing
the issue.

Also, don't you know you shouldn't install SP4. It's an even numbered
service pack. ;)

Subject: Strange OWA 5.5 issue

Thanks,
Amy

Outlook dependency to GC

I took down one of the GC's for maintenance but we still have 1 other GC

RE: Outlook dependency to GC

2003-07-25 Thread Ed Crowley
Are both GCs in the same site? Outlook does keep the GC in the registry,
but it gets it from Exchange in a process known as referral. Look in your
Exchange server's Properties pages, under Directory Access (I think it is;
it's known as DSAccess) and you can see which GCs your Exchange server uses.
If there's only one in the site and it goes down, it could take maybe 15
minutes (from my experience) for the Exchange server to decide to use a GC
outside the site. That may be enough ammunition for you to purchase a
second GC for the site.

RE: Outlook dependency to GC

2003-07-25 Thread Carmila Fresco
Both GC's are in the same site. I checked ESM and exchange has
switched to the 2nd GC. I guess we just weren't patient enough. :)

Thanks guys!

Are both GCs in the same site? Outlook does keep the GC in the
registry, but it gets it from Exchange in a process known as referral.
Look in your Exchange server's Properties pages, under Directory Access
(I think it is; it's known as DSAccess) and you can see which GCs your
Exchange server uses.
If there's only one in the site and it goes down, it could take maybe 15
minutes (from my experience) for the Exchange server to decide to use a
GC outside the site. That may be enough ammunition for you to purchase
a second GC for the site.

Is there a dependecy between Outlook 2002 and the global catalog server?

I took down one of the GC's for maintenance but we still have 1 other GC
that is up and running in the site. What I was thinking was, everything
would be okay since I don't have both GC's down. All of a sudden, users
are unable to open Outlook. Brought the GC back up and it's back to

Client Not connecting on reboot of Exchange 5.5 server....

2003-07-25 Thread John Strongosky
Hey ya all, this is really weird,

Had to reinstall the imc on Monday and asked everyone to log off which
this particular client says he did but after the server came up Outlook is
very sluggish in starting or will not start at all, get either the retry,
work offline, or cancel dialog box or the Requesting Data from the
Exchange Server dialog box then it might open. Also some of the client
machines have been getting the Requesting data from Microsoft Exchange
window but very infrequently.

Have 10 servers running Exchange 5.5 sp4 on nt40 sp6, the client is running
xp and office xp with all patches loaded. The particular server that this
client is on is the Public Folder server and has the IMC/CC mail connector's
on it.

Troubleshooting steps so far:
1. Turned off, Enable Instant Messaging on the client.
2. Unchecked the all Planner Options on the client.
3. Tried a hosts file with this server name in it.
4. Change the RPC binder order from default to tcp_ip and spx only.
4a. Ran the rpc ping utility from this workstation and set ping 50 times all
successful.
5. Can ping server just by name.
5. arp -a has the correct server and mac address of the nic card
6. nbtstat -c shows the server.
7. Did a nslookup of the exchange server from this workstation and server
resolved.
8. Looked in the Wins manager did notice another entire for this machine
deleted it.
9. Can do a \\exchange server name from the workstation.
10. Uninstalled and reinstalled Office Xp.

I'm cornfused now.and scratching my head about this...

Any suggestions.

Also I want to get a sniff of this workstation and know there is a new
version of netmon called netmon2. I tried ftping to Microsoft's site via a
link that I was given and also searching via the web with no luck do any of
you have it?

Subject: Strange OWA 5.5 issue

Thanks,
Amy

Sounds like he's done all that.

My only suggestion would be to shut down, AND DISABLE all the stuff you
were going to shutdown, then reboot (That is to say, power off reset)
the server prior to starting the install of the SP.

RE: RUS not working to child domain?

2003-07-25 Thread Joe Pochedley
Neil,

Thanks for the quick rundown, but none of those appear to be the
problem:

1. All DC's listed in RUS are available from the Exchange server. No
problem with connectivity either by FQDN or short name (netbios name).

2. I've checked all the way to the individual object in AD. Exchange
Enterprise Servers have permissions to the users in question. The
Exchange Server in question is part of the Exchange Enterprise Servers.

3. No third party address generators are installed. No event errors in
the event log with logging set to max.

4. No problems with Dist. lists with hidden membership. Again, no
errors in the event log.

And the hunt continues... Thanks though.

4) If the RUS encounters a distribution list that has its membership
hidden, it will not be able to stamp it with mail attributes and will go
to sleep. (Q287137)

Kind ladies and gentlemen, once again I come forth seeking your

A number of months ago we began integrating the systems of a company

servers to a single server. Adding Exchange mailboxes for their child
domain accounts went smoothly. Once the RUS to their child domain was
added, all the information replicated to the GAL just as I expected
and
they had live mailboxes... Now, for some reason RUS no longer appears
to be working properly with the child domain... Changes to accounts
(spelling changes in names for instance) aren't reflected in the GAL
and
new accounts in the child domain never appear in the GAL. RUS appears
to be working fine within the main domain though.

I've tried to force an update and a rebuild in RUS, neither of which
 made a difference.

I've turned logging for MSExchangeAL (LDAP, Service Control, and
Address
Book Synch) to Max, but I don't see any failures or warnings (just a
lot
of informational messages which I've perused but can't discern
anything
 that looks like a problem).

I've verified connectivity to the remote child DC which is configured
in
the RUS (MSKB 294222) by both short name and FQDN. I even tried
changing to another DC in the child domain with no effect.

I've removed and rebuilt the RUS to the child domain.

I believe that the Exchange Enterprise Servers have proper permissions
all the way through the child domain per MSKB 328223 (they shouldn't
have changed since the initial accounts were put in, and everything
worked OK when I added the first 60 or so accounts)...

I'm hoping someone else can give a suggestion as to where to
investigate
next. Everything looks like it SHOULD be working properly.

As always, thanks in advance for any assistance!

Can't you just remove the exchange attributes (and mailbox) from the from
one account and connect them to the other? Is exmerge really necessary? You
may also want to look at your AD replication topology and schedule if that
type of replication is taking such an extreme amount of time to replicate.

Strange calendar problems - Exchange 2000, Outlook 2002

2003-07-25 Thread Steve Sorenson
Hello,

We are having a strange problem with one user's (we'll call her User
A) calendar and specifically with meeting requests. Here is the
scenario:

1) User A sends invitation to User B for a meeting.
2) User B accepts invitation.
3) A short while later (the time varies), User A will receive a meeting
cancellation of that meeting.
4) A check of User B's Sent Items folder shows a cancellation even
though they never issued the cancellation.

This has happened to User A at least a half-dozen times, and is not with
any specific recipient. Also, they have been able to send many other
successful meeting requests. This is on Exchange 2000 SP3 with Outlook
2002 on an all Windows 2000 network. Also, this is not happening to
other users.

Here's some of what I've tried so far:

1) I've checked the recipients' workstations for any auto-cancel rules
and found none.
2) I've scanned the workstation for viruses and found none.
3) Searched MS's knowledgebase and read anything I could find on
canceled meetings.
4) Tried starting Outlook with the /celanfreebusy and /cleanreminders
switches.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Steve

First off, if doesn't sound like an Exchange issue...it sounds like an
Outlook settings issue.

Second, have you checked User A's account for any delegates? Are there any
other people that have full User priveleges on this mailbox? Have you
checked the Outlook rules or the Tools/Options/E-mail Settings for either of
these groups of people ?

Re: Strange calendar problems - Exchange 2000, Outlook 2002

2003-07-25 Thread Chris Scharff
Does the recipient have mail delivery set to a PST file?

 Steve

Here's a copy (below) of a message I posted 8/2/2002 about my Exchange 5.5 to

It does not include the issues with OWA in Exchange 2k. OWA 2K is much prettier and
much more functional, but it is certainly MUCH slower. Also, you need to edit your
URLSCAN.INI file from the default OWA configuration or else you will

This is just an informational post, you're welcome to comment on it but I'm
not really asking any questions. Just thought folks out there getting ready
to upgrade might want to hear the story. I just spent the night upgrading
(or trying to upgrade) my exchange 5.5 server.

We have a very simple network. 1 domain. 200 users. 1 exchange server.
2 domain controllers (not the exchange server).

Started about 2 weeks ago prepping for upgrade. Armed with:
White Paper in-place upgrade from msoft exchange 5.5 to msoft
   exchange 2000
Q316886 How To: Migrate from exchange server 5.5 to exchange

Q282309 upgrading exchange server 5.5 service pack 4 to

Q295922 considerations when you upgrade to exchange 2000 server
Q296260 how to configure a two-way recipient connection agreement
   for exchange server 5.5 users
Q253829 description of the active directory connector
   deletion mechanism

And, of course, monitored this list (and the sun-exchange) one for upgrade
ideas!

Now some of the documents have conflicting information. If you weed thru
the dates and such you can usually figure out what is really true. For
example, the white paper states you MUST have at least one domain running in
native mode, but the HOW TO describes a scenario where all domains are in
mixed mode.

With the domain controllers upgraded to win2k active directory (mixed
mode) last month I tackled the exchange upgrade this month. Went thru the
white paper and how to, updating the schema (forestprep and domainprep) and
ran all the tests listed in those docs to verify it was working. Got
exactly the results they told me!

First time I ran the actual upgrade got my first rude surprise. My vendor
had shipped me the Exchange 2000 standard edition media (which doesn't
really say standard on it, just Exchange 2000) and the upgrade process
stopped immediately with You can't go from enterprise to standard you

Two days later I have the correct media. Take the server off the network
and run an online backup (Veritas backup exec with exchange option). Verify
the backup worked.
With exchange services down get back on the network and run domain tests
again. Everything ok!
Run the upgrade! The upgrade goes thru several processes but hangs at

exchange service account has all the permissions and click retry. Still no
work. Rats. Getting late so time to make the $250 call to PSS!
PSS steps me thru lots of stuff, nothing works. They have me change the
service account user permissions at the ORG container from CUSTOM to SERVICE

to cancel out of that error message. Nada. Have to task manager/shut down

Yuck. Go into registry and delete the stuff, rename the exchsrvr
folders, uninstall IIS, restart server, install IIS, re-apply all service
packs and hotfixes (that really sucks), delete the renamed exchsrvr folders,
setup /r exchange 5.5, restore directory and info store.
Restoring directory service doesn't work. Call PSS back. Directory
service was trying to start and got hung, can't restore to hung service.
Change to manual start and reboot. Directory restores!!!
Restore info store. (8 gigs). 2 hours later ready to go! (almost) Now
the internet mail connector isn't working. Dawn is breaking and panic
begins to creep in. Users will be screaming in about 2 hours. Call PSS
again. End up deleting the IMC and creating a new one. They very patiently
step me through lots of good stuff, including making sure I'm not an
internet relay and that I'm not doing circular logs. They even stand by
while I reinstall my Anti-virus for exchange. Everything is working. It's
now 7am and I'm back to my original pre-upgrade status from 7pm the night
before.
