I'd be a little wary. By submitting your spam to them you could just be
giving them live email addresses to sell on.

If memory serves, you have to import a bunch of stuff into your Active
Directory: new objects and things to support the HP unit. It may have even
gone as far as modifying your schema (can't be sure on that).

When we realized what was involved, we backed off in a hurry. That's mostly
due to lack of confidence (our AD setup was quite new at the time), and a
lack of any defined business need. All agreed that it would be nice to
have, but then agreed that affecting the entire organization to benefit one
department was a risk we didn't need to take.

Has anyone used an HP 9100C Digital Sender connected to Active Directory
before? I cannot get the darn thing to work. I have all all the
parameters correct, but get No matching entries found when I do a
search. I have the correct port (389), the correct IP of the GC server,
and the search root is set to (DC=domain,DC=com). If anyone has any
insight on this, I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
 Thanks.

I've never seen it do that. I would upgrade to Ex5.5sp4, then upgrade NAVMSE

We currently run Exchange 5.5 SP3. We have installed NAV for Excahnge
Version 1.5.2 The server has 1 gig of RAM. Recently we have been
experiencing and issue in task manager. The memory allocated for
NAVeAP.exe is very hightotaling almost all of the memory for the
server. It usually is in the 900 meg range then the server begins to run
VERY slow. Also when you look in Task Manager it is listed twice
(NAVeAP.exe)The second one totaling about half the memory allocated of the
first. I only have about 250 users with email accounts and by all
accounts the server is not hit very hard.

When rebooting the server everything seems ok for a day or so but then the
memory allocated shoots up very high when a virus is detected and the
server does a scan, when finished the server never reclaims the memory
used and within a week I am more than likely forced to again reboot the
server to reclaim the memory.

Thanks in Advance.

The best method I have seen for this is to create a dummy mailbox.
Assign it all the SMTP addresses for the former employees.

Open this mailbox and set up an inbox rule wizard to permanently delete
the
messages as they come in. For all practical purposes they become
vaporized.

Not exactly RCW and such compliant, but it works.

Is there some brilliant way to delete all of the junk e-mail that
ex-employees get? I.E. I have it (Exchange 2000) set to send me any
e-mail message that does not resolve to one of our employees. When we
kill their old e-mail box, they have inevitably set them selves to
receive every piece of junk e-mail known to man so I get tons of them. I
realize I could just create a rule in my e-mail box to kill it as it
comes to me, but is there some kid of way to return an e-mail to the
sender that acts like the domain is no longer available (I.E. it would
act like it bounced and we no longer exist). For example, when our
server went down during the conversion, all of the e-mails I get for
this list service got bounced back and my account get set to on-hold.
What ever it looks like when my e-mail gets bounced is what I would like
to do for specific addresses.

Does this make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

Phil, I would urge your CEO to think twice about this. There are a few
reasons.
A) Many folks don't want HTML email.
B) A 10K graphic just eats up space, makes downloading of email slow, and
generally is useless to anyone but the sender. It's a cute trick, but that's
it. It adds NOTHING of value.

Personally if a company started sending us emails with that in everyone, we
could quickly ask them to stop or block them from sending us email.

a graphic with a hotlink to our website. 10K total size.

Can I configure this from the server?

There is a way to get this via exchange admin.

Goto mailbox resources on the server and highlight all mailboxes, click on
File and save windows contents into a csv file. Open the CSV file in

This does it accurately.

There is a way to get this via exchange admin.

Goto mailbox resources on the server and highlight all mailboxes, click on
File and save windows contents into a csv file. Open the CSV file in
excel and sum the Total K.

This does it accurately.

RE: Virus Attack ??

2002-05-16 Thread Orr, Dale

This has NEVER been the Be Kind to the Clueless List. ALL members are
expected to do some research before asking a question, and are expected to
actually CONTRIBUTE to the list when their area of expertise is crossed. If
you have no area of expertise, you need to find the Care Bear List.
Once upon a time, this list had several self-appointed enforcers that kept
it that way. As it happened, they were also amongst the most eloquent,
best-informed contributors. Now that they've gone on to greener pastures, we
read more and more questions like What happens if I pull the plug out of
the back of the server? Is that bad?
Perhaps we should put a fund together and pay CJ to come back every few
days

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

Clue 4:

track the message. We have gotten one of these, and it came from the
outside. The text was a message undeliverable, which comes from system
attendant not the postmaster. When you track it, you will see who it
really
has come from. Then tell the sender they have the Klez and now would be
a
good time to get some A/V software and keep it up to date. Jeff

Actually, since this list is free, and anyone can come here and ask a
question, I don't think anyone has a right to say, Don't talk to me that
way.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like it much either when Mr. Ely gets his
panties in a wad and goes hog out on me, but then I also don't like it when
someone signs onto the list and asks, How can I change the admin account
password?, which has been asked at least 500 times and the answer is out
there to be found.

I have a very good friend whom I was managing and he had this really bad
habit of always asking me How big can a DIM field be? (Extra credit if you
know a. What language we are talking about, b. What the answer is) I used to
just spout the answer off without thinking about it, then I decided one day
to make him look it up. He got quite upset with me, and said, You know,
why don't you just tell me? To which I replied, Give a man a fish, he
eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.

While I do my best to be nice, that doesn't mean I expect others to. As a
matter of fact, saying that they should is really placing my standards of
conduct upon them, something I don't have the right to do, and neither do
you. While if we all lived in a perfect world, people would never get upset
and say cross things, this isn't the perfect world, and some people, and yes
even those that have the greatest knowledge of all, sometimes just say mean
things, my heartfelt suggestion is either learn to deal with it, or
unsubscribe from the list.

When signing up for this list, I think an email should be sent first to the
person wishing to join that states, If you haven't done your homework,
don't expect to be treated with kid gloves!.

Hell, I remember my first question on this list, I was told succinctly by Ed
Crowley to read the FAQ, check the knowledgebase, and if I still had
questions, then ask them, BUT UNDER NO MEANS SHOULD I EVER ASK SUCH A STUPID
QUESTION AGAIN WITHOUT FIRST TRYING TO FIND THE ANSWER.

The long and the short of it is this, (Paraphrashing ED), if you want to be
treated nice, call PSS. If you want the answers, first try and find out the
information on your own, read the FAQ, search the archives, look into
technet, then and only then, ask your question here.

I guess what I'm saying, is life is hard, and sometimes ppl get a bit tired
of answering questions that are quite easily answered if you only do the
research first.

This has NEVER been the Be Kind to the Clueless List. ALL members are
expected to do some research before asking a question, and are expected to
actually CONTRIBUTE to the list when their area of expertise is crossed. If
you have no area of expertise, you need to find the Care Bear List. Once
upon a time, this list had several self-appointed enforcers that kept it
that way. As it happened, they were also amongst the most eloquent,
best-informed contributors. Now that they've gone on to greener pastures, we
read more and more questions like What happens if I pull the plug out of
the back of the server? Is that bad? Perhaps we should put a fund together
and pay CJ to come back every few days

An email referencing the Awesome FAQ used to go out to new subscribers. Now
that just posting can get you autosubscribed to more spam than you can
possibly read, I am no longer sure if that is the case.

At a minumum people should be willing to spend $50 US for a decent Exchange
book which will cleverly have the answers to most of these questions hidden
therein.

But sadly, NO ONE reads anymore. I love my book. (Thanks to Paul, another

Certs are not a sign of competency. They just mean that the person is
capable of memorizing braindumps. I interviewed MCSEs that answered the
question Explain your NT domain structure in your previous job with an
answer like We had ATM coming to the back of our PCs. You've got to be
careful with MCSEs that come with huge resumes. There are some ways you can
tell if they're good or not though. For example if the candidate writes
MCSE with a larger font than his own name, you probably have a clueless
wall-licker in your hands.

If a person doesn't have certification, it means that he/she has not sat
through the tests. That person can be the most knowledgeable guy out there.

That guy is a knucklehead. The Best Cert is the one you need or help you
do your job better. That is the best cert. I have a CCNP and CCDP and I
really do not work in that industry. I really am an admin working with M$,
Cisco, Citrix, Unix etc I studied the Cisco stuff because we were
converting from x.25 to frame relay and I wanted to do it so I asked the
company to give me a shot. I used the knowledge again when we switched to
NVPN. My only point is that the Certs were about what I needed to improve my
skill set.

I had to hire a guy recently (echoing Lori and Ray) and I hired the guy that
had very little Practical experience but he did have an MCSE. I thought that
at least showed that he wanted to learn. I interviewed a few others that had
more experience and never took the time to educate themselves in their
chosen craft.

certification. One of the speakers was telling a senior class this before

I deal with (new and different) people daily who have worked with Exchange
for years but don't know their database from their check file. I wouldn't
let them within 20 feet of any Exchange server that I worked on but they are
the hired Exchange expert for their company. The fact is that people are
people, and certified people are not inherently better than experienced
people or vice versa. I think that the best bet is the person who realizes
that, regardless of how much he knows, he does not know everything and is
always willing and wanting to learn more than he currently knows.

You people talk like you can't have both. Sure there are some paper MCSEs
out there but there are also many MCSEs that have mucho experience. Most
hiring managers, all things being equal will look at experience first but...
then certs. Additionally while experience is the best there are people that
have worked in one environment for so long that they know NOTHING about any
other capabilities of the hardware/software. They are nearly as bad as the
paper MSCE because the scope of their knowledge is so very limited and
because of their experience think the only way to run a network is the way
they did it at their last job. At least the Paper boyz know they are
limited, are willing to learn, cost half as much and don't cause half the
drama the experience guy does. They piss me off so much more, that and
they usually have no idea as to WHY their last network was set up that way
but that it is just the best way. Experience is NOT always the best
qualifier either

I've got a 5.5 organization, and the Exchange server in one of my sites is
getting 9318 bind errors to all other servers in other sites. I've verified
name resolution both ways, and everything seems to be in order. I'm able to
net use shares both ways with no problem. I'm also able to ping by name
both ways with no problem. I've added the other servers to it's hosts and
lmhosts files for good measure with no luck.

Any suggestions???

 Hi

I'm running down a event id 142, and I do think its ISP related with a
border gateway protocol issue. The problem is generating a undeliverable
that indicates the emails cant go over 17 hops to their target. Now I'm
no
networking wiz but it looks like a loop issue outside our system, so I
thought I would try to up the number of hops and see if that helped.

Is there a place in IMS or Exchange where I can set that? I couldn't find
 one.

connecting through VPN and needed to give Domain Users the Logon Local

Like I said, I can not speak for E2K but that was EXACTLY my problem.

When attempting to login to OWA in Exchange 2000, all of my users get this
error after entering username and password: Error. Access is Denied.
Administrators can log on just fine but normal users cannot. The Exchange
server is Win2K with Exchange 2K and all the latest service packs
installed. OWA resides on the Exchange server through the default
install. The primary domain controller and global catalog is a separate
Win2K server.

OWA used to work until recently. Nothing has been modified on the
Exchange Server, but recently there were some unintentional security
changes on the domain controller and we don't know what they were. The
only thing I can find about login denial in OWA says to make sure that
users have log on locally rights and access this computer from the
network rights. They have these but still can't login to OWA.

Any ideas?

Oh. Well, that's an RFC question. You're asking for how to let
everybody in the universe EXCEPT your own people send inbound mail?
That's just kinda weird. No way to stop it; they're just telnetting

It's in the FAQ for 5.5, and it's in the FAQ for 2000. I would have
gotten more specific, if you had said what version of Exchange you were
using. That's important info. But look it up in the FAQ will get you
there.

In 5.5 it's in the properties of the IMC, to require auth. In 2000 it's
in the properties of the SMTP Virtual Server or connector, whichever
applies in your case.

Malformed Data Transfer Request can Cause Windows SMTP Service to Fail

Originally posted: February 27, 2002

Summary

Who should read this bulletin: Customers using Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 2000
Server and Professional, Windows XP Professional and Exchange Server 2000

Impact of vulnerability:Denial of Service

Maximum Severity Rating:Low

Recommendation:Customers who need the Windows 2000 SMTP services should
apply the patch; all others should disable the SMTP service.

Affected Software:
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Exchange 2000

Technical description:

An SMTP service installs by default as part of Windows 2000 server products.
Exchange 2000, which can only be installed on Windows 2000, uses the native
Windows 2000 SMTP service rather than providing its own. In addition,
Windows 2000 and Windows XP workstation products provide an SMTP service
that is not installed by default. All of these implementations contain a
flaw that could enable denial of service attacks to be mounted against the
service.

The flaw involves how the service handles a particular type of SMTP command
used to transfer the data that constitutes an incoming mail. By sending a
malformed version of this command, an attacker could cause the SMTP service
to fail. This would have the effect of disrupting mail services on the
affected system, but would not cause the operating system itself to fail.

Mitigating factors:
- Windows XP Home Edition does not provide an SMTP service, and is not
affected by the vulnerability.
- Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional do provide an SMTP
service, but it is not installed by default.
- Windows 2000 server products do install the SMTP service by default.
However, best practices recommend disabling any unneeded services, and
systems on which the SMTP service had been disabled would not be at risk.
- Exchange 5.5, even if installed on a Windows 2000 server, is not affected
by the vulnerability.
- The result of an attack would be limited to disrupting the SMTP service
and, depending on the system configuration, potentially IIS and other
internet services as well. However, it would not disrupt any other system
functions.
- The vulnerability would not enable an attacker to gain any privileges on
the affected system or to access users' email or data.

Vulnerability identifier: CAN-2002-0055

Malformed Data Transfer Request can Cause Windows SMTP Service to Fail

 Originally posted: February 27, 2002

 Summary

Who should read this bulletin: Customers using Microsoft(r) Windows(r)
 2000
Server and Professional, Windows XP Professional and Exchange Server
2000

 Impact of vulnerability:Denial of Service

 Maximum Severity Rating:Low

Recommendation:Customers who need the Windows 2000 SMTP services
should
apply the patch; all others should disable the SMTP service.

 Affected Software:
 - Microsoft Windows 2000
 - Microsoft Windows XP Professional
 - Microsoft Exchange 2000

 Technical description:

An SMTP service installs by default as part of Windows 2000 server
 products.
Exchange 2000, which can only be installed on Windows 2000, uses the
 native
Windows 2000 SMTP service rather than providing its own. In addition,
Windows 2000 and Windows XP workstation products provide an SMTP
service
that is not installed by default. All of these implementations
contain a
flaw that could enable denial of service attacks to be mounted against
the
 service.

The flaw involves how the service handles a particular type of SMTP
 command
used to transfer the data that constitutes an incoming mail. By
sending a
malformed version of this command, an attacker could cause the SMTP
 service
to fail. This would have the effect of disrupting mail services on the
affected system, but would not cause the operating system itself to
fail.

 Mitigating factors:
 - Windows XP Home Edition does not provide an SMTP service, and is not
 affected by the vulnerability.
 - Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional do provide an
SMTP
service, but it is not installed by default.
 - Windows 2000 server products do install the SMTP service by default.
However, best practices recommend disabling any unneeded services, and
systems on which the SMTP service had been disabled would not be at
risk.
 - Exchange 5.5, even if installed on a Windows 2000 server, is not
 affected
 by the vulnerability.
 - The result of an attack would be limited to disrupting the SMTP
service
and, depending on the system configuration, potentially IIS and other
internet services as well. However, it would not disrupt any other
system
 functions.
 - The vulnerability would not enable an attacker to gain any
privileges on
the affected system or to access users' email or data.

 Vulnerability identifier: CAN-2002-0055

Let me step out from behind the curtain to say I feel deep shock and grief
for those of you who are affected by the disasters happening today. Some of
you are only in shock; others have lost dear ones. Some of the people on
this list may have been injured or killed, even.

The enormity of this day overwhelms us all. The images, reports, and losses
touch every human deeply. Let me offer myself as someone you can correspond
with, should you have any need. Many of you placed yourselves at my disposal
during my time of loss: I am here for you, should you need in your time of
loss.

It is peacemaking and sharing of grief that keeps us human.

I've decided that much of the movement in the IT field is caused by bad

OK, so perhaps I should add a little more information here.

Believe me, I KNOW .pst files are bad. And, in light of what follows, I have
already started looking for another job.

We are currently merging two companies. My IT director wants ALL remote
Exchange servers removed from ALL offices across Europe and for ALL users to
connect Outlook directly to central servers in the UK over VPN. Some of this
work has been done and naturally, users are complaining about speed issues
and performance. Especially those on a 256K link! :)

So, rather than backing down, he wants ALL remote users to have RPC
connectivity to the central servers and use .pst files for their mail.
(ouch!) But...he doesn't want the whole .pst file backing up every time
because...some users have 1Gb .pst files!!! Now you understand why I am
looking for another job. My arms are not nearly long enough to keep this at
sufficient arms length! Instead, he wants an incremental backup on the file.
Then, for it to be backed up on a networked server.

So, until I find another job, any suggestions?

Hi,

A *little* off target I know, but can anyone recommend a product that
does incremental backups of .pst files? I only want to backup what has
changed in the file rather than the whole thing.

I normally would never do such a thing, but after watching the tone of
this group for some time now and seeing compliants on other lists about
the abusive nature of it's elders, I've taken it upon myself to create an
alternative Exchange mail list that will be user friendly, polite and
sensitive to new Admin needs.

This is not an attack on you or your methods, just a realization that
different people learn different ways and it's time to have an
alternative.

I wish the Swynk Exchange mail list well, and I hope you'll do the same
for us.

Not that minions and/or PFY aren't a good thing to have around, but 90% or
more of the task Michèle describes below could be automated via scripting.

 here's what we do:

Change the primary NT account used by the mailbox to the supervisor's
 account.
Go to the supervisor's station and from Tools, Services,
 highlight Microsoft
Exchange Server and click Properties. On the Advanced tab,
 add the mailbox
to the Open these additional mailboxes selections. (If the
 supervisor uses
the Outlook Bar, add a shortcut to the mailbox there.)
Hide the mailbox from the GAL.
Make a notation in the Exchange Admin GAL entry in the Administrative
Notes section stating that this mailbox will be deleted on a
 date 90 days
 from the date of termination.
Make Administrator an Alternate Recipient for the mailbox
 and DO NOT check
 the deliver to both box
Give Exchange Admins Send As permissions to the mailbox
Remove the terminated employee's mailbox from all DLs.
 Disable their NT account.
Archive their G: C: drives to CD. Give the CD to the supervisor.
Give the supervisor any mail archive CDs (.pst).
After 30 days, remove the mailbox from the supervisor's Additional
 Mailboxes listing.
Ask the supervisor if the CDs are no longer needed. If they
 are not, ask if
MIS should store them or if the supervisor would like to keep them.
 Delete the user's Home Directory.
After 90 days, delete the mailbox the NT account.

Next time, hide the mailbox, set the max allowable incoming
 mail size to 0K
and then get permission to delete it in writing, after having
 permission
export the mailbox to PST and burn it to a CD.That's how
 I do it...YMMV

For your immediate problem, get busy building that recovery server.

 HELP!

Recently I deleted the mailbox of one of the resigned
 employee, after 3 days
her replacement comes in and asking about the old mails of
 her successor,
she says that there are some important mails she needs to
 retrieve on the
said mailbox. This user is one of the VP's here.

How can I retrieve the deleted mailbox? Is there an
 Undelete mailbox like
 command in Exchange?

I have Exchange 5.5 with SP4, and have no recovery server
 ready here.

 Thanks in advance...

Or you could compile a little VB app called IE.exe that pops up a GIANT
dialog box saying Dad said NO Internet and drop it on your PC. Rename
IE's executable so only you know where to find it.

Thanks for those that read this even though its OT. It's a quickie...
I need to block access to the internet from my pc, but be
 able to use it
when *I* want to. ( Parent kid issue).
Zone alarm would be perfect, but if I use it to do not
 allow IE to access
the internet, all that needs to be done is open ZA, and
 click allow it.
If ZA could be password protected it would be perfect. Anyone
 have a link or
suggestion? Does Programs like Net nanny do this or just
 limit WHERE they
 can go?
 Thanks!
 Ron
