[expert] Stateful inspection firewall.

2003-05-29 Thread Frankie
Hi guys,

I have a semi OT question about packet filter firewalls.

Up till now, I have used linux IPCHAINS and IPTABLES firewalls were one was
required, and never had a problem...

I just got hold of a DLINK DSL504 and set it up with a mixture of NAT and
portforwarding.. all of which went fine.

Then I did the usual thing when setting up a firewall, I set the firewall to
block everything, and then enabled the usual suspects, SSH, SMTP, HTTPD,
HTTPS, and so on. which were all portforwarded to two linux boxes on the
inside net..

Unfortunatly, when enabled, the firewall blocked all NAT traffic as well...
so with the firewall on, I can't do anything at all.. but my web sites still
get access, and my mail server works..

Does anyone have any experiance with router firmware firewalls and what I
can do to get NAT working without opening the whole thing up??

I have linux IPTABLES filters setup on the linux machines as well, but I
want external port scans to show the ports as dropping all packets to closed
ports, not closed as they are now.
Since that end of things is done by the router, that is where I have to
tackle it.

Anyone know anything that would be useful here?? (There is no MASQ setting
in the routers firewall config. :-)

regards

Franki

may help others.

I will try un- and re-subscribing to expert... :-/

account and recreating it, no soap. It's pretty frustrating; I suppose I
could delete the entire config.xmldb and start over, but it would be a
huge pain and at this rate I don't see how it would fix things.

As you are using Evolution 1.2.4 apparently, have you tried closing
Evolution and running killev to completely force Evo and all its
background tasks to quit?
# killev

FYI: For 1.3 (beta), current 1.4RC1 (aka 1.3.92) and all forthcoming
Evolution versions this is:
# evolution-1.3 --force-shutdown

(The '-1.3' part will only be temporarily of course...)

Maybe you should try removing stale /tmp/*jack* files and directories.
jack sure is meant to be your user name.

An additional frustration is that Ximian's made it very difficult to
report problems on their site; having bought the Ximian Connector which
 a) doesn't work and b) started this whole mess (uninstallled with no
effect), I'd think that I could at least get a login to ask questions on
their support site. I'd think wrong.

I really don't suspect Connector to start those problems, as long as
that account is not related to the MS server...

Reporting bugs is easy, assuming you are used to bugzilla:
 http://bugzilla.ximian.com/

You can ask a lot of knowledgeable folks on the Evolution mailing list:
 http://lists.ximian.com/mailman/listinfo/evolution

Maybe you wanna give the 1.4RC1 a try (1.3.92) with Gnome 2 integration.
Works really stable for me since previous beta versions. (Beware: I'm
not sure, if Connector works with 1.3.x versions again. Previous
versions were not yet supported.)

You can get Evolution 1.3.92 via Red Carpet (easy download, subscribe to
Evolution beta channel). Grab Red Carpet from:
 http://ximian.com/products/redcarpet/

Red Carpet direct download, just install red-carpet-* and rcd-* from
 http://www-files.ximian.com/red-carpet/mandrake-91-i586/

or grab all desired Evolution 1.3.92 packages from
 ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/ximian-evolution-beta/mandrake-91-i586/

(make sure to grab the libgnomecanvas RPM, as they fix dnd bugs).

I'd ask d-link, but IIRC some of these commercial products are set up so
that they won't portforward to a NAT'd address, or will only portforward
to a single NAT, or won't portforward at all but instead make you put
the server on a DMZ cable, which is naked to the world. Idea being to
make you buy more public IPs, go to business class service provision,
pay more money, be less likely to run a server.

 Good day everyone,

After getting my hand on the new version of Winex 3, I have observed that it

On remedy to this is not to use the pre-built RPM and compile from CVS
instead: I saw a TWO-FOLD increase in display performance afterwards. It is
really worth it, even if there were some minor problems associated the
compilation (mostly library dependencies that were easily soled using urpmi
 (tm)).

Patrick,

I brought up this very issue early on in the Transgaming forums, and
thru email. This was with version 1.0 or something similar. I was told
that recompilation for the processor would not result in significantly
greater performance. I felt that this was wrong, but never bothered to
download the CVS version. So I am glad that you posted the results from
your experimentation.

At this point Transgaming should be made aware of this fact and that
*they* should be the ones releasing an athlon (or similar) rpm. I think
they actually may already be aware of the performance increase, but for
some reason (probably regarding the issue of support) they do not want
to compile for other than i386.

BTW, what moniker do you go by on Transgaming?

One last small problem that I had to solve was that Winex whined about being
unable to find the libntdll.so library. A quick search provided it's
location: /usr/local/lib, which was not added to /etc/ld.so.conf when doing
the make install. Manual modification of the file was therefore required,
followed by ldconfig. Problem solved :)

Time to get back to my Panzer General 2 campaign ;)

I'm still waiting on Morrowind. :(

Sorry for the OT, but I just received an email for a product called
'soundpix' which allows you to embed sound in a standard jpeg. I thought
that sounded cool, but I don't want to buy the software and then realize
all I had to do was download a gimp plugin or something else that simple.
Any suggestions?

hello again :)

a) its connected to a motherboard connector
b) not a problem, harddisk is detected by cmos
c) settings are correct (been messing with computers all my life ;)

the entry in lilo.conf was like this:
append=devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off quiet

i removed this hdc=ide-scsi.
this had one effect, that during boot-up a message appears, telling me that
hdc was added. so far so good.
this dows not happen with lilo.conf in its original state.
the diealog asks me whether i wnat to run the config tool, okay.
then i have a listing of the partitions on hda, the partitions on hdb, but no
trace of hdc (even though it just announced to me that it had discovered the
same)
unfortunately it doesn't change anything on the situation afterwards.

in can see hdc in the detected hardware listing of mandrake control center
(even with hdc=ide-scsi in lilo.conf), but thats about it.
can't see it in diskdrake, can't open it with fdisk...

/dev/hdc simply doesn't exist.

thanks for your help!

adding ide hard disks should be straightforward assuming that
 a) it's not connected to a seperate io card but to a motherboard connector
 b) your cmos settings are ok - note, i've known some os's detect drives
that are not shown in cmos, winxp for one and i think maybe linux too,
 c) you have your slave/master settings correct for your new drive, for a
disk plus cdrom on the same channel i suggest making the disk master and
the cdrom slave (which you seem to have if the cdrom is /dev/hdd), - note,
some hard disks have different settings for master-alone and
 master-with-slave,

i'm surprised that harddrake didn't detect the new disk and offer to run
the config tool, have you tried running it within mandrake?
run mandrake control centre and go to hardwarehardware list, is your new
disk listed there? if so run the config tool which will be diskdrake, this
will write your /etc/fstab (without which the new drive won't be mounted at
start up and won't show up in file managers) and, i would have thought, set
lilo.conf to rights too, though i can't be sure 'bout that

come back if this doesn't help

Jamies, I have a suspecion that you have alot more options then I do...

I got around it for now by portforwarding whole ranges of ports to a non

So I have stealth, and NAT, but I don't like doing it this way, somehow its
just not need.

I have emailed the filter table to Dlink tech support, so hopefully someone
there will know.

[expert] Lockups in LM91

2003-05-29 Thread Lyvim Xaphir
Peeps,

There have been an alarming number of system freezes here recently, and
I guess I'm not so much looking for a solution as I am for other LM91
users that have been experiencing similar things.

There have been other system lockups, but I viewed them as anomalies at
the time, and did not take notice of the circumstances at those times.
However the last lockup was recent enough that I still had my ears
pricked up. There were several applications open at the same time,
several of which usually work without incident together. Evolution,
Eterms (3), mplayer (CLI mode), xclock, qmail, Enlightenment, chronyd,
esd, and kdm. The other app that I do not usually run was drakconf. I
was composing an email in Evo, and drakconf had been open for perhaps 30
seconds. At the end of that 30 secs the cursor disappeared from Evo's
composer window, and the system went unresponsive.

Although E was still showing a desktop and the cursor could move about
the screen, mouse clicking did nothing, as did ctrl-alt-backspace or
cntrl-alt-del. No go with cntrl-alt-f1 thru 6 either.

In the end the only recourse was the reset switch. The filesystem btw
is XFS, and no problem with recovery this time. However I did not
experience troubles of this sort under 8.2, so let me knock the hardware
suggestions in the head right off the bat. According to LM82 the HW is
immaculate (and has not changed); in addition, all LM91 updates have
been applied.

Has anyone else experienced similar situations or is my situation
unique?

[expert] Unable to find the Postscript driver when setting up printer in MDK9.1

2003-05-29 Thread JOHAM,DAVID (HP-Boise,ex1)

Hello all,

I'm trying to set up a generic postscript printer via the KDE print system
and CUPS. To do this, I go into the KDE control center, select peripherals
and then printers. After getting into administrator mode, I'm allowed to add
a printer.

Everything goes great until I get to the point where I'm asked what kind of
printer I have. I want to just choose the Postscript printer option, but
every time I do, I get the error message Unable to find the Postscript
driver.

This is totally baffling to me. I can pick the generic manufacturer and pick
the generic postscript driver from there, so I know a generic postscript
driver exists on my system. I also have a postscript.ppd.gz file in
/usr/share/cups/model which is where I think the default postscript ppd
should be.

I've updated everything on my system from the mandrake update and made sure
I had ghostscript foomatic and every other print support library I know of
installed, but still no luck. Google hasn't been much help either.

Does anyone here know what's going on?

David

btw: yes, I know I can set printers up via the Mandrake control center, I
just think the KDE interface is much nicer...

[expert] RPM binary doesn't seem to be working

2003-05-29 Thread Rick Salsa
Hi,

I've come across something that I haven't seen before, but my RPM binary
doesn't seem to work. If I try to install or upgrade any RPMs, it just
sits and doesn't do anything.

rpm -qa, rpm --help, and rpm --version work, but that's it. I tried rpm
--list to see if the last rpm installed might have done something, but
that doesn't work either. Any ideas on what might be up or how to fix
this? Mandrake 8.2

Thanks,
/rick

Has anyone else experienced similar situations or is my situation
 unique?

Not quiet the way you describe it.

I was happy enough using RC2 awaiting 9.1 final.
Recently (last week) I upgraded which wasn't a big deal as I kept everything
updated anyway.
I have had a few lock ups which I blamed on my kyrosII video card and the
powerVR patches which are actually meant to be for mdk8.2, nothing like that
before though!
In general I've a feeling the whole install is less stable i.e. locks up for
no apparent reason---it just doesn't feel right.
My gui works a little more stable since I use the non-fb boot option so I'll
keep a lookout for error messages as of now.
So actually my gut feeling says: XFree86-4!

Anyway, I'm not upgrading any of my other machines before I'm sure though.

Good luck,
HarM

Re: [expert] OT - sound embedded in jpg

2003-05-29 Thread Torstein Dybdahl
Hi

This seems to be a very proprietary format. Supposely they have plans
for support for multiple desktop platforms. But I doubt they ever will
support linux.
They have a plugin for IE. To create files for the soundpix format you
have to buy the software, that is obvious.

Can not see that Mplayer has any support for this either. I would guess
to embedde sound i jpeg files and maintain standards, they fill the
metadata of the jpeg with encoded sound. For the program you only supply
a jpeg and a wav file.

With an example file it might not be difficult to make a player for the
fileformat.

If you are able to get example files you could try to preceede the
mplayer developers or some other multimedia developers for the
linuxplatform.

For the same effect you could make an avi or mpeg file with the same
picture throughout the whole file.

For testing if you have windows installed you can teste the soundpix
sampler

Any suggestions?

Did you do anything with RPM before it croaked? In my experience, you can
break rpm if you make a slip and do a rpm -qa and hit enter, then hit
Ctrl-C to stop it (it will otherwise go through the entire list of your
installed rpms). Doing the Ctrl-C often leads to what you are experiencing,
and I imagine similar actions of stopping rpm from doing something it is in
the middle of.

Me thinks you will need to delete your current rpm database and then do an

The easiest way is to right click the desktop - Run Command - then type

Re: [expert] change mouse sensitivity?

2003-05-29 Thread Robert Crawford
For all:

If you're a kde fan, the best way is to drag (as user) the kcontrol icon in
/usr/bin to the panel creating an instant one click shortcut, and then you
have an instant access to the entire kde control center window, where it's
all available to do anything you want in kde configuration. When I stumbled
on this insight, linux life in kde became much easier.

[expert] Kernel: i8253 too high?

2003-05-29 Thread David Guntner
I had a tail -f going on my syslog, and I noticed an entry which said:

kernel: i8253 too high! Resetting

(not 100% sure of the number, but it was close to that)

That was the final entry on the screen. Everything else had stopped. Even
my main console wouldn't respond when I moved the mouse and I had to hit
the reset button to reboot.

Anyone know what this message means? And maybe what can be done to keep it

[expert] Win4Lin version 3 problem on Mdk 9.1

2003-05-29 Thread Gerard Godin
Hi,

I installed my copy of win4lin 3 on mdk 9.1 and though everything works
fine, I can't seem to be able to use the Windows Update through ie.

Has anyone encountered this situation before?

I'm hoping that I won't have to upgrade to version 5, for the little
that I need Windows for, I'd rather not spend extra money. :)

Thanks in advance for any advice and help

Re: [expert] Lockups in LM91

2003-05-29 Thread Mark Williamson
I have found LM91 rock solid, and I have installed it on quite a number
of different types of PCs, about the only things I dislike with Mandrake
9.1 is the way it runs depmod -a on every bootup and the Zeroconf
stuff, both very easy to fix.. About the Zeroconf stuff it was causing
3 second freezes now and again in Evolution and making Mandrake operate
like a slug.

To Fix the depmod -a stuff comment out lines 491 to 508 in the
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit (Umm that could be a little differnet in yours)

That will speed up your bootup.. Considerably -- At least if your still
locking up you won't have to wait too long for the reboots ;)

Now the Zeroconf stuff, and the freezes are usually caused by a program
tmdns, just run the command rpm -e tmdns after you have completed this
process, just check your /etc/hosts file and the /etc/resolv.conf file
making sure that the continence is correct, if the continence of your
/etc/hosts file is not correct that will cause lockups..

Cheers
Mark

Has anyone else experienced similar situations or is my situation
 unique?

anymore.

Open the menue, go to
Configuration
KDE

Mouse
Chose the Tab Advanced
(I have German menues so I'm not sure about the correct names)

I just got hold of a DLINK DSL504 and set it up with a mixture of NAT and

Then I did the usual thing when setting up a firewall, I set the firewall

I've got a D-Link 713P here that is working just fine... Question, is it
outbound or inbound traffic that is getting blocked? If it is outbound
then I've got a page that falls under the title Packet Filter. The
Default here was to block all outbound except special rules from
specific boxes. Then a button at the bottom to do the same for inbound.
Filtering can either be done in general or by mac address.

Jamies, I have a suspecion that you have alot more options then I do...

I got around it for now by portforwarding whole ranges of ports to a non

So I have stealth, and NAT, but I don't like doing it this way, somehow its

I have emailed the filter table to Dlink tech support, so hopefully someone
 there will know.

Sounds like it... I had to deal with a Linksys today that gave us
similar fits. It couldn't port forward say port 2200 to port 22 on an
internal IP number ... so I had to make the internal Linux box listen to
2200 and 22 then forward 2200 to 2200+ internal IP... that
worked AAA!

Can not see that Mplayer has any support for this either. I would guess
to embedde sound i jpeg files and maintain standards, they fill the

With an example file it might not be difficult to make a player for the

If you are able to get example files you could try to preceede the

For the same effect you could make an avi or mpeg file with the same

Now the Zeroconf stuff, and the freezes are usually caused by a

completed this process, just check your /etc/hosts file and the

if the continence of your /etc/hosts file is not correct that
 will cause lockups..

For tmdns, I just went to MCC, System Services and stopped it
from running.

Anyone know what this message means? And maybe what can be done to keep it

Is this a laptop? i82365 is a pcmcia chipset is why I'm asking.

Nope. It's a Gigabyte motherboard inside a tower case.

If your windows is 98, forget it, I think M$ is not supporting it anymore.

 Gerard

I have 98SE and I thought they were supporting it through June anyway.

That's okay for me. I only use it for a few apps so I don't have to reboot to
my Win2k partition just to do a simple task.
