2014-08-02 Thread s3raph...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Re "I happen to have the Magical Mystery Tour DVD ":

Ah yes - Christmas time in England.
On Boxing Day in 1967 the BBC broadcast "Magical Mystery Tour". The whole
family sat down to watch it and we all thought it complete rubbish and switched
channels after 30 minutes.
The previous Christmas (28 December 1966) we had gathered to watch "Alice in
Wonderland". Again we all agreed to switch stations after the first half hour.
Decades later I saw "Alice" again and this time thought it completely
brilliant - a must-see for any Lewis Carroll fans. So when they recently
brought out a digitally restored version of "Magical Mystery Tour" I decided to
take a second look. I've always liked the music but I now also think the film
fab. Yep, it's obviously dated (we are talking Summer of Love here) but it has
an anarchic charm and inventiveness.
 Here's the Alice adaptation:

2014-08-02 Thread s3raph...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
My favourite Houdini trick was one time when he visited some one-horse town in
the States to demonstrate his jail-breaking skill. The local sheriff locked him
in the jail and everyone then waited outside the building for the great
magician to emerge. All the townsfolk were there to witness the great event.
Inside Harry was doing his usual trickery. He had a lock pick hidden on his
person (best not to ask where). Now the locks were placed too far away for a
man's arm and hand to reach so should have been secure. But Houdini had
developed his dexterity to such a degree that he could use his legs and feet to
manipulate the pick. In this case however, despite his best endeavours spending
hours trying to work the mechanism, he completely failed. He was about to give
up and call in the witnesses when he leant against the cell door and it swung
open. He then realised that the sheriff had been so overawed by having a mega
celebrity in town that he'd completely forgotten to lock the door.

Houdini emerged to an ecstatic crowd who cheered and clapped an astonishing
feat. But there had been no trick at all in reality; it was all illusion.
Fantastic!

I'm wrong about there not being ANY sessons of about Ayureveda.

There have been several so far, including 1 or 2 that have showed up in the
online broadcast of the "plenary" (attended by all the members) sessions:

 http://sanskritlibrary.org/download/pms/schedule.pdf
http://sanskritlibrary.org/download/pms/schedule.pdf

This is a HUGE conference, as far as Vedic Studies conferences go. There's
apparently several hundred peple attending from out-of-state, including many
from India. The TM people dominate parts of the conference because they have a
consistent interpretation of the Vedas, with physiological research to back up
their perspective. Thus far, everyone has been very polite to each other, and
the non-TMers seem quite intrigued with Maharishi's physiological
interpretation of enlightenment and comprehension of Veda based on that
physiological state.

The quality of the online broadcast has been spotty, but I'm told that all the
videos will be made available on youtube eventually.

I don't know if they are recording all seminars, or just the ones in the main
hall --the plenary sessions.

It had a rocky start online since the 31 July video was aired in the 3 AUG
page, but they've since corrected that. The keynote presentation s by MUM
speakers was very much All TM, All the time, but after a bit of thought I could
understand why it was done that way, True Believerism aside. Many, if not most,
of the guests likely had only the slightest idea of how MMY's take on the Veda
is different from the traditional ones they are used to.

There's an awful lot of sessions upcoming. I hope that they'll be able to
record and broadcast all of them via youtube:

I guess it's called a silly "pushing of buttons" attempt. I really enjoyed
that link you provided.

Especially when you consider there is really only one place in the world where
the redwoods grow like that.

Especially when you consider that people are chopping off the knurls of many
of those trees.

Sort of like the slaughtering of elephants or rhinos, I guess.

The joke just sort of falls flat.

Much more than before.

Which leads to the question - can you transcend using other mantras or
techniques?

Absolutely (pardon the pun). For someone who claims to have been a "Zen
Master" you sure don't understand much about other mantras or
techniques.A mantra for ayurveda is used only to bring oneself back
into balance. Jyotish mantras are used as remedial measures. But if you
were truly a wise pundit you would have known this.

If transcending is important to you, then you probably wouldn't want
to forgo pure bliss consciousness just to be able to cast a few spells
and attempt to bring to yourself a minor boon or two. So, I'd say that
a wise man would probably want to transcend mundane goals. And, a
really wise man would probably want both - the spiritual and material
enjoyment.

So far, in the history of science, it has never been demonstrated that a
mental thought could cause a corresponding physiological change in the
human body. Humans are probably not ever going to be able to levitate or
bend spoons using just their mind power. However, if and when this
occurs, it will certainly be a revolution in physics. I'm sure it will
be on the cover of Popular Mechanics. It sounds complicated.

The Buddha was the first historical yogin in India. He is supposed
to have attained enlightenment after meditating under a tree around
583 B.C. He realized the truth of suffering, it's cause, and the way
out it. He had resolved to find a way to free himself and others
from the binding law of karma.  So, what did he realize?

When he awakened, he realized all his past lives and the suffering
he had gone through; then he realized all the suffering that all
other beings had gone through. After that, he realized all the
suffering he and others would have to endure in the future. He saw
all at once in a flash the total extent of cause and effect.

The extent of his enlightenment was the realization of karma,
causation, which governs everything from human activity down to a
blade of grass. He awakened when he realized that everything past,
present, and future, all happens for a reason based on the law of
cause and effect.

The only way to avoid karma is to realize that there are no chance
events. In order to free oneself from the binding law of karma each
individual must burn up their past karma through yoga and avoid
doing anything that would cause more karma to accrue. It sounds
simple.

However, everyone has past karma to bear and they will not be able
to avoid all action in the future. But, you should strive for
perfection in everything you do and try to avoid doing harm to
others. You should dedicate all your actions to Ishvara and try not
to be attached to the fruit of your actions. Karma yoga is the only
practical way to free yourself from the pain of suffering in this
age.

Excellent example of either "missing the point" or "reinforcing people's view
