At least 100 million Africans are estimated to have the post-traumatic stress
disorder caused by wars, terror attacks, natural disasters, abuse and chronic
violence. In countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and South
Sudan, as much as half of the population may suffer from PTSD.
In a one-hour special devoted to the topic, Voice of America's Shaka Ssali
discussed the causes, effects and most effective treatments of the disorder
with a panel of experts.

Xeno, I replied to a message you had posted here last night, but my reply never
showed up, and now I don't see your original message.

But I enjoyed your piece about The Cloisters, and wanted to invite you for
lunch at the Four Seasons, Pool Room tomorrow (Monday), at noon.

That may depend if our attire will permit us entrance, but if not we will dine
somewhere else.

We'll be a party of four, two adults, and two grown kids.

I know little about the Four Seasons other than hearing about it occasionally,
but I read that it may have to relocate, and that it had a wonderful atmosphere.

And me, being a sucker for darshan, of any sort, I though,we'd make a
splurge.

Hope you can make it, even with the last minute notice!

2015-07-05 Thread steve.sun...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
I'm gonna try this again, since last night's message didn't come through.

We saw the fireworks last night, and they were, I may say, exceedingly
mediocre.

I am guessing that what makes them special would be the backdrop of the Statue
of Liberty, but from our vantage point inside the city, they were pretty
average.

And yes, there was a heavy police presence during that time, as I guess there
was talk of some event, but overall, the police presence was pretty average.

The highlight of yesterday's activities was the Observation Deck at the World
Trade Center.

This was more than your get off the elevator at the 105 th floor, and look
around.

Someone designed a pretty remarkable experience from the time you board the
elevator, until the time you exit.

Was gonna invite xeno to meet us for lunch one day up here in NYC, but guess
that ain't gonna happen.

Got some funny directions leaving the museum trying to find the subway, and we
ended up walking two miles along the freeway, looking dow! n at the Hudson
River, before we finally found it.

Ain't a lot of green in NYC, but we had a nice stroll through Central Park.

Tired as hell, but we're gonna have some dindin, and check out Times Square.

 Good Times!

Xeno, thank you for your detailed response.

I enjoyed every minute of it!

Oh, a little follow up on Bhairitu's comment about high security in NYC.

As I met my wife and daughter after they attended Mass at St. Patrick's
Cathedral ,there was a heavy police presence,. They were with armed semi, or
fully automatic assault rifles and other gear. So, that was interesting.

Also, the two Memorial Pools at the 9-11 site, marking the location of the two
towers, was very impressive, IMO.

Everything to do with the memorial was controversial including the memorials,
but I found them to be rather perfect.

I deleted my post as I tend not to have any photos I have taken remain on the

drive to the Metro North Train Station in Brewster (and at my age the round
trip costs about $18.50), which actually costs less that the total cost of
driving, though it takes longer. Parking is expensive in New York unless you
hunt around. I have medical appointments on Monday. As I get older these
appointments seem to be increasing in frequency.

My vehicle is about 15 years old and I need to take it in for repairs, the
exhaust system needs patching (I hope) as there are some holes in it and my SO
is complaining about fumes, she is very sensitive to industrial fumes even
though she thinks nothing of asphyxiating me with smoke particles from incense.

The Cloisters was interesting. That day I was there, I went with a local photo
club. The museum gave me temporary permission to use a tripod so I was able to
get shots in darker areas until my camera died. I used my SO's camera for the
rest of the day. I think that camera died a few months later too.

Once again thanks for the invite, but it takes a lot of pressure to get me to
go into New York City. If I go in more than two or three times a year, it's
unusual.

I know what you mean. You know the Bay Area and San Francisco is
probably getting as bad as New York to drive into. And it is only about
35 miles away from here. Last time I did that was 3 years ago for a
conference.

My car is 17 years old but then it's a Subaru Forester and I've kept it
up. Funny thing, the dealer left a robocall the other day that I hadn't
been in for service since 2009. Yup, I found a independent shop up the
street that has a Subaru mechanic and they've been keeping it up for me.
And they cost less than the dealer. I don't need to do much driving
since everything is just a few miles away. But I did have to replace a
few things around 110,000 miles and those will be good for another 100K.

Thanks for the invitation, but I have other obligations.

I deleted my post as I tend not to have any photos I have taken remain
on the Internet in a public space for very long. I live about a 60
mile drive out of the City, and tend to avoid going into the City
unless I have to. Normally I drive to the Metro North Train Station in
Brewster (and at my age the round trip costs about $18.50), which
actually costs less that the total cost of driving, though it takes
longer. Parking is expensive in New York unless you hunt around. I
have medical appointments on Monday. As I get older these appointments
seem to be increasing in frequency.

My vehicle is about 15 years old and I need to take it in for repairs,
the exhaust system needs patching (I hope) as there are some holes in
it and my SO is complaining about fumes, she is very sensitive to
industrial fumes even though she thinks nothing of asphyxiating me
with smoke particles from incense.

The Cloisters was interesting. That day I was there, I went with a
local photo club. The museum gave me temporary permission to use a
tripod so I was able to get shots in darker areas until my camera
died. I used my SO's camera for the rest of the day. I think that
camera died a few months later too.

Once again thanks for the invite, but it takes a lot of pressure to
get me to go into New York City. If I go in more than two or three
times a year, it's unusual.

Xeno, I replied to a message you had posted here last night, but my
reply never showed up, and now I don't see your original message.

But I enjoyed your piece about The Cloisters, and wanted to invite you
for lunch at the Four Seasons, Pool Room tomorrow (Monday), at noon.

That may depend if our attire will permit us entrance, but if not we
will dine somewhere else.

We'll be a party of four, two adults, and two grown kids.

I know little about the Four Seasons other than hearing about it
occasionally, but I read that it may have to relocate, and that it had
a wonderful atmosphere.

And me, being a sucker for darshan, of any sort, I though,we'd make
a splurge.

Hope you can make it, even with the last minute notice!

I caught a laugh with Jupiter Ascending when they call the elephant

really sci-fi but people will think it is because it's got big

America's values and it's endless fight against the nameless

Been a lot of films like that recently. Aliens with no backstory,

Thanks for the follow up. I suspect much of this is security theater
and unnecessary. They could do it more covertly given our technology.
I think they want to condition us to live like we're in a Stalag.

We had a 32 year old woman shot dead on the Embarcadero the other
evening. They caught the guy who did it and he was a Mexican who had
been deported 5 times already and had felony convictions. Apparently he
just decided to shoot somebody. And I bet he used an unregistered gun
so gun laws aren't going to help in these situations. Nor would
security theater.

We've also had a couple of shooting down the road from me on the
freeway. They don't know who did those. Maybe it was the same guy.

Oh, a little follow up on Bhairitu's comment about high security in NYC.

As I met my wife and daughter after they attended Mass at St.
Patrick's Cathedral ,there *was a *heavy police presence,. They were
with armed semi, or fully automatic assault rifles and other gear.
So, that was interesting.

Also, the two Memorial Pools at the 9-11 site, marking the location of
the two towers, *was *very impressive, IMO.

Everything to do with the memorial was controversial including the
memorials, but I found them to be rather perfect.

The Cloisters was interesting. That day I was there, I went with a

Laugh of the day - thanks Xeno.
Last time I was in NYC was many a year ago on my way to the Catskills,
specifically to Livingston Manor to get my first bloc of the siddhis under the
auspices of Reed Martin and TM Siddhi Administrators Big Bopper Bevan and John
Cowhig.

While at Port Authority waiting for my bus, I was accosted by a crazy old Irish
Catholic bag lady who gave me shit and told me I was going to hell for not
going to church. She assumed that my red hair and pale skin meant I was Irish.
I also witnessed a helluva fight between a big fat woman and one of the men in
charge of one of the bus lines. They didn't throw any punches but god almighty
they sure did cuss each other out. I had not traveled much outside of South
Carolina at that point in my life, and I had never heard anybody cussing each
other like that in public.

I also stepped between an old homeless guy and a young girl, teenager, he was
harassing. Port Authority cop stepped in too, right after I did.

Interesting time and little did I realize in my TM brain addled mode that I was
about to spend two weeks rubbing elbows with some people at LM who were a whole
lot crazier than anybody I saw in Port Authority. Some of those TM'ers had
actually sold their homes to get enough money to do the siddhis all the way
through. I admired 'em at the time.

I did see it a long time ago - I like mind Battleship all that much, I thought
it was better than Prometheus. But to get real now you gotta get to something
like Minority Report which I liked very much.

There is one called Battle Los Angles - kind of a similar plot deal to
Battleship in that invading aliens are beat down by some US Marines, but I
liked it mainly cause I like Aaron Eckhart who stars.

and Battleship was a Hasbro movie, as was Transformers and GI Joe. Damn, wish I
still had my GI Joes from the 1960's.

TMers think like ordinary householders so they give a narrative that only makes

We had a 32 year old woman shot dead on the Embarcadero the other evening.
They caught the guy who did it and he was a Mexican who had been deported 5
times already and had felony convictions. Apparently he just decided to shoot
somebody. And I bet he used an unregistered gun so gun laws aren't going to

Greece has decisively rejected the austerity package wanted by other EU

will end in tears whatever.

Greece owes $330 billion. There are only 11 million Greeks!

One article discussing the crisis mentioned that Britain once defaulted on its
debt to the USA. I'd never heard of that one but it turns out that in 1934
Britain defaulted on war debts to the USA worth about $350 billion in today’s
money. So virtually the same amount! Most people think we have paid the debt

[FairfieldLife] Re: Greece votes NO

2015-07-05 Thread jr_...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Greece's problem is probably an indicator of the world economy. The US itself
has a national debt of about $17 trillion, but it's not suffering like Greece.
IMO, this is due to the productivity of the US and the potential productivity
for years to come. As such, many countries are willing to buy American bonds
which in turn help to finance the government expenditures, including the
payments for interests of previous bonds. Obviously, this trend can't go on
forever. And the American public will have to fix this problem sooner than
later.

Unfortunately, Greece has no choice in the matter. They don't want to pay the
debts because it would drastically affect their standard of living. IMO, the
EU leaders would have to adopt a Marshall Plan for Greece which is similar to
what the Americans did for the European countries after WWII.

If not, other countries in Europe, such as Italy, Spain and Portugal, could
fall in the same trap of financial insolvency. With that scenario, a world
economic depression could follow just as well.

Rand Paul has proposed a tax reduction plan. But this would only
increase the debt problem if nothing else is done. The obvious
followup is to reduce government spending to fit the government

cut off. For obvious reasons, it would not be the military.

HK has been around for years and knows both sides of the story. There were
quite a few black Confederate soldiers and most fought in integrated regiments,
unlike northerner black troops who were segregated. I saw a video last week of
a young black fellow who refused to condemn the flag. His great grandfather
fought for the Confederacy and his family received a Confederate pension after
the war. Most bitterness between blacks and whites in the south was a result of
reconstruction efforts by *Republicans* using racial divide and conquer tactics
to politically subjugate white southerners and Democrats. The Jim Crow south
was the result of the backlash. But you should know this , coming from SC.
Unfortunately, the victors in a war write the history and is always written to
justify their victory.

Re: [FairfieldLife] Greece votes NO

2015-07-05 Thread jr_...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]

The world would have fallen into an economic depression without the bailout
back then. If our national debt problem is not solved, the US could be in the
same situation as Greece. Our current presidential candidates should address
this problem. So far, nobody has come up with a viable solution.

Rand Paul has proposed a tax reduction plan. But this would only increase the
debt problem if nothing else is done. The obvious followup is to reduce
government spending to fit the government income. This would mean that many
government programs will have to be cut off. For obvious reasons, it would not
be the military.

2015-07-05 Thread jr_...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
These so-called famous people do not know what they're saying. They merely
parrot what others are saying and are basing their ideas on emotions in order
to be perceived as cool or hep to the ways of the world.

In the scientific world, scientists are finding out, at the quantum level,
that the objective world paradigm does not exist. IOW, the entire universe
is coming out of Nothing, which is the unified field. Otherwise, scientists
are forced to say that the universe created itself. This is NOT logical and is
therefore bunk.

Pier 14 is a very popular tourist spot and not a rough neighborhood at

I read about that, seems like a mighty rough neighborhood when the

being filmed by yet other news crews.

Sounds like the hooligans in your area need a good whiff of grape!

Thanks for the follow up. I suspect much of this is security
theater and unnecessary. They could do it more covertly given our
technology. I think they want to condition us to live like we're in
a Stalag.

We had a 32 year old woman shot dead on the Embarcadero the other
evening. They caught the guy who did it and he was a Mexican who had
been deported 5 times already and had felony convictions. Apparently
he just decided to shoot somebody. And I bet he used an unregistered
gun so gun laws aren't going to help in these situations. Nor would
security theater.

Also, the two Memorial Pools at the 9-11 site, marking the location
of the two towers, *was *very impressive, IMO.

Everything to do with the memorial was controversial including the
memorials, but I found them to be rather perfect.

Thanks for the invitation, but I have other obligations.

I deleted my post as I tend not to have any photos I have taken
remain on the Internet in a public space for very long. I live about
a 60 mile drive out of the City, and tend to avoid going into the
City unless I have to. Normally I drive to the Metro North Train
Station in Brewster (and at my age the round trip costs about
$18.50), which actually costs less that the total cost of driving,
though it takes longer. Parking is expensive in New York unless you
hunt around. I have medical appointments on Monday. As I get older
these appointments seem to be increasing in frequency.

My vehicle is about 15 years old and I need to take it in for
repairs, the exhaust system needs patching (I hope) as there are
some holes in it and my SO is complaining about fumes, she is very
sensitive to industrial fumes even though she thinks nothing of
asphyxiating me with smoke particles from incense.

Some are from cigarettes or camp fires. There haven't been enough storms to
account for lightening strikes in the Victoria or Vancouver vicinities but the
interior of BC probably have some that are caused by nature. It is really,
really dry here so the conditions are ripe for fires.

Xeno, I replied to a message you had posted here last night, but my reply
never showed up, and now I don't see your original message.

NICE INVITE! If I had been in the area I would have stood in for Xeno. Sounds
wonderful.

 Re Good for Greece.:

Maybe. But the $350 billion (equivalent) that Britain in 1934 (population then
approx 43 million) owed the US and defaulted on had paid for the country to
fight a world war! Greece (population 11 million) owes $330 billion. The Greeks
seem to have pissed the money against the wall.

Whatever happens about debt relief or write-offs the Greeks will have to get
grips with their chronic tax evasion and business-unfriendly environment.
That's not happening anytime soon.

Most people think we have paid the debt
off, but we haven’t.

So if you Yanks are short of cash you know where to look.
