It's interesting reading this below how Maharishi was the one
who was
  more
tight with money than anyone I've ever known. I never saw him
giving
anything to anyone, except maybe Tony Nader where he made that
public
display of giving his weight in gold, but that was no doubt
donated at
  his
request. He was only asking for more money all time even though
he
controlled probably more than a billion, yet he upbraids others
for
  lack of
generosity and compassion. What he writes below displays a lack
of
understanding for bankers, who are just business people, like
any
  other kind
of business. If bankers are to give away their profits, then
why not
businesses of all types, which certainly is a good idea to give
to
  charity
and help others, which he never did on any material level. His
  fantasy
about all the world's probem's being solved in the Age of
  Enlightenment or
Sat yuga, which he spoke of since we were kids and for which he
claims
credit, along with Guru Dev, continues to be shown to be just
that, a
fantasy. It's surprising with such a brilliant mind and such
wisdom
  of the
Vedas he had these unusual quirks.

In June 2007, Maharishi made some comments about banks, along
with his
   poverty removal program...

On 19 June, during the Conference on Removal of Poverty
broadcast live
  by
satellite and the Internet from the Financial Capital of New
York,
  Maharishi
gave a strong message to the banks and financial institutions
of the
  world.

This is the telling statement for me:

When you are on the path of God-realization, that path will not
bring
you suffering. And, if the path to God-realization brings
suffering, it
is not the path of God-realization; it is not a religion.

  MMY

I understand the theory, but looking at meditators, in practice
whew!

How many of those meditators you mention are really devoted to God?

 Thomas Pynchon

While that is an interesting suggestion, and
while I even liked some of his books, you should
bear in mind that you are talking about an author
for whom the words insular, isolated, self-
absorbed, or self-indulgent have appeared in
most of the reviews of most of his works.

Also, bearing in mind the lifetime achievement
nature of the Nobel Prize for Literature, it is
good to remember that Pynchon has written a total
of only five novels in 45 years, plus one book
of short stories and a few essays. Compare and
contrast to:

Orhan Pamuk: 12 books in 26 years
Doris Lessing: 62 books in 58 years
Gunter Grass: 29 books in 56 years
Harold Pinter: 65+ books in 50+ years
V.S. Naipaul: 33 books in 49 years
Toni Morrison: 19 books in 38 years

Compare and contrast also to the lifetime
achievement of other American writers who
won the Nobel Prize for Literature:

John Steinbeck
Ernest Hemingway
William Faulkner
Pearl Buck
Eugene O'Neill
Sinclair Lewis

I rest my case.

But I remain open to being convinced otherwise,
if anyone really can come up with an American
writer still writing who would be in the same
class as the Nobel Prize for Literature winners
listed above. I'd love to read such a writer,
but alas I know of no one who qualifies. In
the field of modern literature, I have to stand
on my claim that America is as second-rate or
third-rate as it is in most other fields these
days.

Now if you were talking about movies... :-)

I think I managed the first time I looked at
his website using the Internet Wayback Machine
and realized that he systematically goes back
and deletes or actually *changes* his past
predictions that didn't work out the way he
predicted to make it look as if more of them
did.

I suspect that he's so gone (we are talking
about someone who has convinced himself that
not only aliens from the Pleiaides care about
Earth politics and Sarah Palin but that they
look like big verginas and that they speak
through him) that he doesn't consciously
realize that he does this. But he does.

He systematically lies to make it appear that
his predictions were more accurate that they
were. So that he can make a living selling
those predictions to others.

What amazes me is not Lou's P.T. Barnum There
is a sucker born every minute mentality, but
the mentality of the suckers. If he actually
manages TO make a living while doing this, I
shudder to think what his customers are like.

I am reminded of one of P.T. Barnum's most
famous tricks. He needed to empty the tent
after one performance so that he could fill
it with the next group of suckers, but people
were hanging around talking and wouldn't leave.
So he picked up a bullhorn and started shouting,
This way to see the egress! This way to see
the egress! Everyone followed him, to the
egress.

egress
Pronunciation: \#712;#275;-#716;gres\
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin egressus, from egredi to go out,
from e- + gradi to go — more at grade

1 : the action or right of going or coming out
2 : a place or means of going out : exit

Guidelines File - Updated 9/8/08

Fairfield Life used to average 75-150 posts a day - 300+ on peak days - and the
guidelines included steps on how to deal with the volume. But this volume was
due largely to indiscriminate posting by a few members. We now have a policy
that limits all members to 50 posts a week. Most participants feel this policy
has greatly enhanced the quality of the forum. A Post Count message is posted
every evening, listing members' names (or aliases) and the number of messages
they've posted that week. Those who exceed their weekly quota will be
prohibited from posting for a week. The new week starts each Friday at 7pm Iowa
time, or 00:00 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). UTC is the same as Greenwich
Mean Time during winter.

The book, [Sex Rebel] which closely tracks Mr [Frank]Davis's life in
Chicago and Hawaii and the fact that his first wife was black and his
second white, describes in lurid detail a series of shockingly sordid
sexual encounters, often involving group sex.

One chapter concerns the seduction by Mr Davis and his first wife of a
13-year-old girl called Anne. Mr Davis wrote that it was the girl who
had suggested he had sex with her. I'm not one to go in for Lolitas.
Usually I'd rather not bed a babe under 20.

But there are exceptions. I didn't want to disappoint the trusting
child. At her still-impressionistic age, a rejection might be
traumatic, could even cripple her sexually for life.

[FairfieldLife] Obama asked to stop wearing soldier's bracelet last March

2008-10-01 Thread raunchydog
Barack Obama played the me too game during the Friday debates on
September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a
bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New
Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said
that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember
the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David
Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

However, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the
young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006,
recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had
asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son's name on
it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.

Radio host Glenn Moberg of the show Route 51 asked Mr. Jopek, a man
who believes in the efforts in Iraq and is not in favor of Obama's
positions on the war, what he and his ex-wife think of Obama
continually using their son's name on the campaign trail. (h/t D.
Keith Howington of www.dehavelle.com ) Jopek began by saying that his
ex-wife was taken aback, even upset, that Obama has made the death of
her son a campaign issue. Jopek says his wife gave Obama the bracelet
because she just wanted Mr. Obama to know Ryan's name. Jopek went on
to say that she wasn't looking to turn it into a big media event and
just wanted it to be something between Barack Obama and herself.
Apparently, they were all shocked it became such a big deal.

But, he also said that his ex-wife has refused further interviews on
the matter and that she wanted Obama to stop wearing the reminder of
her son's sacrifice that he keeps turning into a campaign. Even the
snow job that the radio host tried to pull off to cover for Barack's
refusing the wishes of the family of the KIA soldier who's bracelet he
wears doesn't pass the smell test. After all, now that Obama has made
it a big point in the debates, I guess the silent observance of Sgt.
Jopek is no longer so silent and Obama is back to exploiting the death
of a soldier even when he was asked NOT to do so by that soldier's
parents.

To pile insult onto injury here, the Mother doesn't even want to force
the issue of telling Obama to stop exploiting her son because she
wants to see him win the election. Obama is not only taking advantage
of this brave soldier's death, he is taking advantage of the good
wishes of the man's Mother who doesn't want to hurt the campaign.

And, why is the media not playing this story? The radio show on which
this interview is heard happened all the way back in March. How is it
the media missed this? Is it because they are also don't want to hurt
Obama's campaign?

I can only say that if the parents of the soldier whose bracelet John
McCain is wearing had said in public that they want him to stop
wearing their son's bracelet the news would have been coast to coast,
and wall to wall, not just ignored in Madison, Wisconsin.

Obama's use of this soldier that fell in the line of duty is tainted
by his ambition and callousness. And the media is letting him get away
with it.

Soldier's mother 'ecstatic' about Obama's bracelet

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The mother of a Wisconsin soldier who died in Iraq
says she was ecstatic when Democratic presidential nominee Barack
Obama mentioned during Friday's debate the bracelet she gave him in
honor of her son.

Tracy Jopek of Merrill told The Associated Press on Sunday she was
honored that Obama remembered Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in
2006 by a roadside bomb.

Jopek criticized Internet reports suggesting Obama, D-Ill., exploited
her son for political purposes.

I don't understand how people can take that and turn it into some
garbage on the Internet, she said.

Jopek acknowledged e-mailing the Obama campaign in February asking
that the presidential candidate not mention her son in speeches or
debates. But she said Obama's mention on Friday was appropriate
because he was responding after Sen. John McCain, the Republican
nominee, said a soldier's mother gave him a bracelet.

I've got a bracelet, too, from Sergeant — from the mother of Sergeant
Ryan David Jopek, given to me in Green Bay, Obama said during the
debate. She asked me, 'Can you please make sure another mother is not
going through what I'm going through?' No U.S. soldier ever dies in
vain because they're carrying out the missions of their commander in
chief. And we honor all the service that they've provided.

Jopek says Obama's comment rightfully suggested there's more than one
viewpoint on

Barack Obama played the me too game during
 the Friday debates on
September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he
 was wearing a
bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident
 of New
Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006.
 Obama said
that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to
 remember
the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant
 Ryan David
 Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

However, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan
 Jopek, the
young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside
 bomb in 2006,
recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his
 family had
asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his
 son's name on
it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the
 family.

Radio host Glenn Moberg of the show Route 51
 asked Mr. Jopek, a man
who believes in the efforts in Iraq and is not in favor of
 Obama's
positions on the war, what he and his ex-wife think of
 Obama
continually using their son's name on the campaign
 trail. (h/t D.
Keith Howington of www.dehavelle.com ) Jopek began by
 saying that his
ex-wife was taken aback, even upset, that Obama has made
 the death of
her son a campaign issue. Jopek says his wife gave Obama
 the bracelet
because she just wanted Mr. Obama to know Ryan's
 name. Jopek went on
to say that she wasn't looking to turn it into a
 big media event and
just wanted it to be something between Barack Obama
 and herself.
Apparently, they were all shocked it became such a big
 deal.

But, he also said that his ex-wife has refused further
 interviews on
the matter and that she wanted Obama to stop wearing the
 reminder of
her son's sacrifice that he keeps turning into a
 campaign. Even the
snow job that the radio host tried to pull off to cover for
 Barack's
refusing the wishes of the family of the KIA soldier
 who's bracelet he
wears doesn't pass the smell test. After all, now that
 Obama has made
it a big point in the debates, I guess the silent
 observance of Sgt.
Jopek is no longer so silent and Obama is back to
 exploiting the death
of a soldier even when he was asked NOT to do so by that
 soldier's
 parents.

To pile insult onto injury here, the Mother doesn't
 even want to force
the issue of telling Obama to stop exploiting her son
 because she
wants to see him win the election. Obama is not only taking
 advantage
of this brave soldier's death, he is taking advantage
 of the good
wishes of the man's Mother who doesn't want to hurt
 the campaign.

And, why is the media not playing this story? The radio
 show on which
this interview is heard happened all the way back in March.
 How is it
the media missed this? Is it because they are also
 don't want to hurt

Heh heh, I read that, an excellent bit of deconstruction.

I suspect that he's so gone (we are talking

He systematically lies to make it appear that

What amazes me is not Lou's P.T. Barnum There

[FairfieldLife] Stop Bush's No Banker Left Behind Act

2008-10-01 Thread Vaj

Call the Senate Today
Stop Bush's No Banker Left Behind Act

Having suffered a stunning defeat of their Grand Theft Bailout Bill
on Monday, the Bush Administration, the banks and Wall Street are now
coming back for their second try. They are used to directing the
affairs of the country regardless of the will of the people. The U.S.
Senate is expected to vote tonight, Wednesday evening, in favor of a
nearly identical version. This is intended to force the House of
Representatives to do the same when they return tomorrow, Thursday.

You can call the Capitol Switchboard at 800-473-6711 or 202-224-3121
to ask to be transferred to the offices of the Senators from your state.

Bush's No Banker Left Behind Act was defeated because of
overwhelming public opposition. But now the politicians have come up
with an easy answer. In an unprecedented step, Congress is virtually
shutting down its incoming constituent email. They are installing the
digital version of riot police, protecting the politicians from an
enraged population that demands to be heard. Congress has
acknowledged that it is receiving millions of emails from the people
of the United States, all opposing this theft of $700 billion to be
handed to the richest bankers. People who try to send emails are
likely to receive error messages and their emails will not go through
during peak hours. Congress claims that this is a response to the
overwhelming emails to keep their server from crashing; however,
their server did not crash during the time they were receiving the
most emails and they quietly instituted this program late Tuesday
afternoon.

The U.S. Senate - this country's version of the House of Lords - is
returning to do the work of the White House in league with the
biggest bankers. Known as millionaires club because of the elite
status of its members, the U.S. Senate is playing the same role that
the King's House of Lords played in earlier times in British history,
a political barrier created to protect the aristocracy from the wrath
of the people.

VoteNoBailout.org is urging all of its members and supporters to call
Congress, to email them at off peak hours, and to come directly to
the U.S. Capitol on Thursday morning at 10 am so our voices can be
heard at the People's Demonstration/Speakout. Congress can run but
they can't hide from the wrath of the people. We won't let them.

Thursday's demonstration will take place at 10 am on the South side
of the Capitol at Independence Ave. and New Jersey Avenues SE. For
more information, see below or go to VoteNoBailout.org.

[FairfieldLife] Revolt of the Nihilist

2008-10-01 Thread John
To All:

There are various reasons why Congress voted down the bailout plan.
One of the reasons is the fear of losing their jobs because of voter
anger. So, they let the other members to vote for the bailout plan.
In short, there is an element of cowardice involved in this scenario.

Nonetheless, here's one author's opinion of what occurred last Monday.

(from the NY Times)

Revolt of the Nihilists

By DAVID BROOKS
Published: September 29, 2008
In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt inherited an economic crisis. He
understood that his first job was to restore confidence, to give
people a sense that somebody was in charge, that something was going
to be done.

David Brooks

The Conversation
Times columnists David Brooks and Gail Collins discuss the 2008
presidential race.

All Conversations » Readers' Comments
There is no escaping at least some pain when the fundamental
workings of the economic system are called into question.
John Gilbert, Pasadena, CA

This generation of political leaders is confronting a similar
situation, and, so far, they have failed utterly and catastrophically
to project any sense of authority, to give the world any reason to
believe that this country is being governed. Instead, by rejecting
the rescue package on Monday, they have made the psychological
climate much worse.

George W. Bush is completely out of juice, having squandered his
influence with Republicans as well as Democrats. Treasury Secretary
Henry Paulson is a smart moneyman, but an inept legislator. He was
told time and time again that House Republicans would not support his
bill, and his response was to get down on bended knee before House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

House leaders of both parties got wrapped up in their own
negotiations, but did it occur to any of them that it might be hard
to pass a bill fairly described as a bailout to Wall Street? Was the
media darling Barney Frank too busy to notice the 95 Democrats who
opposed his bill? Pelosi's fiery speech at the crucial moment didn't
actually kill this bill, but did she have to act like a Democratic
fund-raiser at the most important moment of her career?

And let us recognize above all the 228 who voted no — the authors of
this revolt of the nihilists. They showed the world how much they
detest their own leaders and the collected expertise of the Treasury
and Fed. They did the momentarily popular thing, and if the country
slides into a deep recession, they will have the time and leisure to
watch public opinion shift against them.

House Republicans led the way and will get most of the blame. It has
been interesting to watch them on their single-minded mission to
destroy the Republican Party. Not long ago, they led an anti-
immigration crusade that drove away Hispanic support. Then, too, they
listened to the loudest and angriest voices in their party, oblivious
to the complicated anxieties that lurk in most American minds.

Now they have once again confused talk radio with reality. If this
economy slides, they will go down in history as the Smoot-Hawleys of
the 21st century. With this vote, they've taken responsibility for
this economy, and they will be held accountable. The short-term blows
will fall on John McCain, the long-term stress on the existence of
the G.O.P. as we know it.

I've spoken with several House Republicans over the past few days and
most admirably believe in free-market principles. What's sad is that
they still think it's 1984. They still think the biggest threat comes
from socialism and Walter Mondale liberalism. They seem not to have
noticed how global capital flows have transformed our political
economy.

We're living in an age when a vast excess of capital sloshes around
the world fueling cycles of bubble and bust. When the capital floods
into a sector or economy, it washes away sober business practices,
and habits of discipline and self-denial. Then the money managers
panic and it sloshes out, punishing the just and unjust alike.

What we need in this situation is authority. Not heavy-handed
government regulation, but the steady and powerful hand of some
public institutions that can guard against the corrupting influences
of sloppy money and then prevent destructive contagions when the
credit dries up.

The Congressional plan was nobody's darling, but it was an effort to
assert some authority. It was an effort to alter the psychology of
the markets. People don't trust the banks; the bankers don't trust
each other. It was an effort to address the crisis of authority in
Washington. At least it might have stabilized the situation so
fundamental reforms of the world's financial architecture could be
undertaken later.

But the 228 House members who voted no have exacerbated the global
psychological free fall, and now we have a crisis of political
authority on top of the crisis of financial authority.

The only thing now is to try again — to rescue the rescue.

Social exclusion causes unconscious mimicry

Lakin et al. make some interesting observations on our reactions to
being socially excluded by others, we are likely to unconsciously
start mimicking their behaviors:

Research across various disciplines has demonstrated that social
exclusion has devastating psychological, emotional, and behavioral
consequences. Excluded individuals are therefore motivated to
affiliate with others, even though they may not have the resources,
cognitive or otherwise, to do so. The current research explored
whether nonconscious mimicry of other individuals—a low-cost, low-
risk, automatic behavior—might help excluded individuals address
threatened belongingness needs. Our first experiment demonstrated
that excluded people mimic a subsequent interaction partner more than
included people do. A second experiment showed that individuals
excluded by an in-group selectively (and nonconsciously) mimic a
confederate who is an in-group member more than a confederate who is
an out-group member. The relationship between exclusion and mimicry
suggests that there are automatic behaviors people can use to recover
from the experience of being excluded. In addition, this research
demonstrates that nonconscious mimicry is selective and sensitive to
context.

[FairfieldLife] Neural correlates of Zen meditation: “Thinkin g about Not-Thinking”

2008-10-01 Thread Vaj

Neural correlates of Zen meditation

The complete title of the article by Pagoni et al. is “Thinking about
Not-Thinking”: Neural Correlates of Conceptual Processing during Zen
Meditation. Here is their abstract:

Recent neuroimaging studies have identified a set of brain regions
that are metabolically active during wakeful rest and consistently
deactivate in a variety the performance of demanding tasks. This
“default network” has been functionally linked to the stream of
thoughts occurring automatically in the absence of goal-directed
activity and which constitutes an aspect of mental behavior
specifically addressed by many meditative practices. Zen meditation,
in particular, is traditionally associated with a mental state of
full awareness but reduced conceptual content, to be attained via a
disciplined regulation of attention and bodily posture. Using fMRI
and a simplified meditative condition interspersed with a lexical
decision task, we investigated the neural correlates of conceptual
processing during meditation in regular Zen practitioners and matched
control subjects. While behavioral performance did not differ between
groups, Zen practitioners displayed a reduced duration of the neural
response linked to conceptual processing in regions of the default
network, suggesting that meditative training may foster the ability
to control the automatic cascade of semantic associations triggered
by a stimulus and, by extension, to voluntarily regulate the flow of
spontaneous mentation.

the bailout: let big government and their taxpayers bailout the rich.
So it appears the free market economic system is a double edged

I think we need socialism if you want a global economy. It is best
managed by governmental groups designed so that no particular person or
group can control it. Make it truly transparent and responsible to the
people. Note this to manage the commons or what should remain in the
public domain. Those things are best managed by government. Whereas
government has no business running small business. It makes no sense
and *would* truly be inefficient so you will still get some capitalism
which should suit you and your small business just fine. Government
will limit how big and powerful you can become. We are seeing now what

Well what happened to that guy in China is actually authoritarianism not
necessarily communism. Sounds like they didn't want him to take away a

going to a TM thing in Vancouver once and the TM teacher I was riding

to steal jobs from Canadians. As we pulled away I yelled at the dumbass
for doing that as all he had to say was we're visiting or visiting some
friends and we would have just sped right through. He replied I was
honest but that wasn't the question they asked, just what is the
purpose of your visit.

Communism is collectivism and can come in two flavors: state run and
corporate run. Both are bad but if Billy had his way we'd wind up in a
Blade Runner world with no government which Ridley Scott defines as a

[FairfieldLife] Ron Paul: Buying bad debt is the wrong solution

2008-10-01 Thread Brian Horsfield
Ron Paul: Buying bad debt is the wrong solution

* Story Highlights
* Paul: Bailout is bad for taxpayers, sticks to policies that
caused economic troubles
* You have to allow the market to adjust prices downward, he says
* Crisis putting pressure on dollar, could force world to give up
on it, Paul says
* Paul: Increasing insurance limits would cover over the mistakes

(CNN) -- Two days after the House rejected the $700 billion bailout
bill, the Senate is set to vote on the rescue plan for financial
institutions.

The vote is scheduled for after sundown Wednesday.

Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, Democratic nominee
Sen. Barack Obama, and Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, all said
they would be present for the vote.

Speaking to CNN's John Roberts on Wednesday, House Financial Services
Committee member and former Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron
Paul discussed why he thinks the bailout bill is the wrong solution to
the economic problem and what he would do to secure financial security.

John Roberts: Congressman, great to see you. I was browsing around on
your Web site, Campaign for Liberty. And right there on the very front
page, you are appealing to your supporters -- and there are tens of
thousands of them -- to get in touch with key senators to tell them to
vote this bill down when it comes to a vote in the Senate at sundown
tonight.

Why do you want them to vote it down?

Rep. Ron Paul: I think it's a bad bill. I think it's bad for the
taxpayers. I think it's doing more of the same thing. The same policy
that we're following now with this bill is exactly how we got into
that trouble. VideoWatch Ron Paul explain why he opposes the bailout »

And you know, I really don't have that much clout in Washington, D.C.
And I recognize it. But there are a couple people outside of
Washington that care about what I'm thinking and care about free
market ... economics. And they will respond. And I think we did help
generate a little bit of mail to the House members.

So you go where you can have the influence. And I think that people --
the grassroots -- understand this a lot better than members of
Congress give them credit for.

Roberts: So, instead of the bills that are currently before the
Senate, the one that may be before the House as early as Thursday,
what would you do?

Paul: Well, we need to do a lot, but a lot differently. We have to
recognize how we got into this problem. We have too much debt. We have
too much malinvestment.

Roberts:OK, OK. So we recognize all of the things that got us here.
But, right now, today, what would you do, if not this bill?

Paul: You have to liquidate those mistakes. Those mistakes were made
due to monetary policy. So you have to allow the market to adjust
prices downward. And that's what we're not allowing to do.

If there are too many houses and the prices are too high, the sooner
we get the prices down to the market level, as soon as we quit trying
to encourage more housing -- this is what we're doing. They're trying
to stimulate houses and keep prices high. It's exactly opposite of
what we should do.

So, we should get out of the way and not buy up bad debt. There's
illiquid assets, but most of those are probably worthless. They're
mostly derivatives. And we're sticking those with the taxpayer. So we
have to recognize that the liquidation of debt is crucial. And if we
did that, we would have tough times, there's no doubt about it, for a
year. But if we keep propping a system up that's not viable, we're
going to have a problem for decades, just like we did in the
Depression. That's what we're on the verge of doing.

Roberts: Congressman Paul, what do you think of this idea that's being
floated -- this process called mark to market, which would, they would
modify the rules so that the, right now, paper that a lot of these
institutions are holding, which is worth nothing, they would actually
be able to assign some sort of value to it.

Some people are saying that that would just hide the problem. Other
people are wondering if maybe that might create some sort of voodoo
accounting that would allow widespread abuse in the system.

What do you think?

Paul: It demonstrates the problem. You know, when they prevented them
from marking them down, this was an SEC [Securities and Exchange
Commission] regulation. Shows how regulations backfire.

If you had a market economy and then if you had a market-adjusted
FDIC, where insurance was based on the strength of the bank, this
would have happened on a daily basis. But instead, we insure
everybody, no matter what the bank is doing, and we do it, either we
overkill -- we give you too much credit on bad investments -- and then
we make changes all of a sudden, and they're drastic, to what they
have done.

So, it's impossible. It's either too little or too much. And what you
need is insurance of, FDIC type of insurance, has to be driven by the
marketplace to measure the viability of a bank.

[FairfieldLife] What it's like to debate Sarah Palin

2008-10-01 Thread do.rflex

I know firsthand: She's a master of the non-answer.

By Andrew Halcro - October 1, 2008 - Christian Science Monitor

Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes,
no papers, and yet when asked questions, you spout off
facts, figures, and policies, and I'm amazed. But then
I look out into the audience and I ask myself, 'Does
any of this really matter?' Palin said.

Anchorage, Alaska - When he faces off against Sarah Palin Thursday
night, Joe Biden will have his hands full.

I should know. I've debated Governor Palin more than two dozen times.
And she's a master, not of facts, figures, or insightful policy
recommendations, but at the fine art of the nonanswer, the glittering
generality. Against such charms there is little Senator Biden, or
anyone, can do.

On paper, of course, the debate appears to be a mismatch.

In 2000, Palin was the mayor of an Alaskan town of 5,500 people, while
Biden was serving his 28th year as a United States senator. Her major
public policy concern was building a local ice rink and sports center.
His major public policy concern was the State Department's decision to
grant an export license to allow sales of heavy-lift helicopters to
Turkey, during tense UN-sponsored Cyprus peace talks.

On paper, the difference in experience on both domestic and foreign
policy is like the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing a
bullet. Unfortunately for Biden, if recent history is an indicator,
experience or a grasp of the issues won't matter when it comes to
debating Palin.

On April 17, 2006, Palin and I participated in a debate at the
University of Alaska in Fairbanks on agriculture issues. The next day,
the Fairbanks Daily News Miner published this excerpt:

Andrew Halcro, a declared independent candidate from Anchorage, came
armed with statistics on agricultural productivity. Sarah Palin, a
Republican from Wasilla, said the Matanuska Valley provides a positive
example for other communities interested in agriculture to study.

On April 18, 2006, Palin and I sat together in a hotel coffee shop
comparing campaign trail notes. As we talked about the debates, Palin
made a comment that highlights the phenomenon that Biden is up against.

Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers, and
yet when asked questions, you spout off facts, figures, and policies,
and I'm amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask
myself, 'Does any of this really matter?' Palin said.

While policy wonks such as Biden might cringe, it seemed to me that
Palin was simply vocalizing her strength without realizing it. During
the campaign, Palin's knowledge on public policy issues never matured
– because it didn't have to. Her ability to fill the debate halls with
her presence and her gift of the glittering generality made it
possible for her to rely on populism instead of policy.

Palin is a master of the nonanswer. She can turn a 60-second response
to a query about her specific solutions to healthcare challenges into
a folksy story about how she's met people on the campaign trail who
face healthcare challenges. All without uttering a word about her
public-policy solutions to healthcare challenges.

In one debate, a moderator asked the candidates to name a bill the
legislature had recently passed that we didn't like. I named one.
Democratic candidate Tony Knowles named one. But Sarah Palin instead
used her allotted time to criticize the incumbent governor, Frank
Murkowski. Asked to name a bill we did like, the same pattern emerged:
Palin didn't name a bill.

And when she does answer the actual question asked, she has a canny
ability to connect with the audience on a personal level. For example,
asked to name a major issue that had been ignored during the campaign,
I discussed the health of local communities, Mr. Knowles talked about
affordable healthcare, and Palin talked about ... the need to protect
hunting and fishing rights.

So what does that mean for Biden? With shorter question-and-answer
times and limited interaction between the two, he should simply ignore
Palin in a respectful manner on the stage and answer the questions as
though he were alone. Any attempt to flex his public-policy knowledge
and show Palin is not ready for prime time will inevitably cast him in
the role of the bully.

On the other side of the stage, if Palin is to be successful, she
needs to do what she does best: fill the room with her presence and
stick to the scripted sound bites.

State House of Representatives. He ran for governor as an Independent

Very good lecture. But I'm sure the Republicans will not agree to the
points made by Dr. Batra.

Nonetheless, I agree tha tax cuts should be made to the middle class
and increase taxes for the wealthy. In fact, it appears that the tax
cut for the middle class will stimulate the economy since they will
more likely spend it to purchase goods and services. Thus, this will
create surpluses in the budget which in turn will reduce the national
debt.

Hartmann was reading from many newspaper articles leading up to and

Communism as a political system is obviously the most intelligent.

First of all, both you and the ignorant Maharishi probably mean
socialism. Communism involves the violent overthrowing of the ruling
class by the working class. Maharishi and all his educated minions
would be enemies to communism and among the first to be persecuted in
a communist takeover..

What it lacks is the understanding of human nature. People who don't
see the personal benefit for busting their ass stop working hard. And
politics becomes corrupt as all the party leaders of every communist
country we know about has proven. The collapse of communism and the
rise of free enterprise in previously communist countries has proven
the flaws in communism.

That is for anyone who likes to read or knows people from these
countries. You know, people with their eyes opened.

best self interest and when all the educated people in the world need
to be violently overthrown by the workers? And BTW if the guy who
changes oil at Jiffy Lube uses a computer, is he part of the
revolution, or part of the problem?

But I may be wrong. Tell me why Maharishi uses the word Communism
which involves a violent power transfer, rather than socialism?

As reported by the local radio stations' e-news:

Molly Atkinson of Fairfield has charges pending after losing control
of her 2003 Ford Focus while traveling northbound on Osage Avenue 4.7
miles southeast of Fairfield and a half a mile north of the
intersection with 252nd Street and on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.,
causing Atkinson's vehicle to roll into the northwest direction and
into the westbound ditch. Atkinson was transported to the Jefferson
County Hospital and treated for the non-incapacitating injuries
sustained in the one-car accident. Atkinson's vehicle suffered a total
estimated value of approximately $6,000 worth of total damages
 sustained in the crash.

 Non-incapacitating injuries? WTF!

I was thinking about this. Aren't the injuries she sustained, which
will
probably cripple her for life, punishment enough for the fact that she
was
probably driving too fast and not wearing her seat belt? It seems so
petty
to give people traffic tickets after something like that.

First of all, both you and the ignorant Maharishi probably mean
socialism.  Communism involves the violent overthrowing of the ruling
class by the working class.  Maharishi and all his educated minions
would be enemies to communism and among the first to be persecuted in
a communist takeover.

For some reason, the real difference seems to have alluded Winston Churchill.

Your rant has nothing to do with facts, only feelings as usual.
That communism hasn't worked perfectly in any country TO THIS DAY is
irrelevant and a totally different discussion altogether.

So tell me what day it will be when humans stop acting in their own
best self interest and when all the educated people in the world need
to be violently overthrown by the workers? And BTW if the guy who
changes oil at Jiffy Lube uses a computer, is he part of the
revolution, or part of the problem?

But I may be wrong. Tell me why Maharishi uses the word Communism
which involves a violent power transfer, rather than socialism?

There was a sad case 15 or 20 years ago in one of
the suburban municipalities that surround the
Phoenix area. The chief of a small police force was off
duty, driving his own vehicle, and going to get a gallon
of milk at 7 AM on a Sunday morning when he was
involved, but not at fault, in a crippling auto accident.
The police report, not written by the same force that
employed him, mentioned he was not wearing his
seatbelt. His insurance company never payed a dime.
I checked into my own policy at the time and
realized that not wearing the seatbelt could cost me
a lot more than the price of a ticket. My agent told me
it was considered on par with driving around a road
closed sign. Coverage is voided. Some people
just let it slip their mind on occassion. Methinks those
who do it willfully would never take the time to
determine their liability if a bad situation should arise.
Everytime one of my brothers gets in my car he wants
to argue that seatbelts are just a bullshit cradle to
grave big government blah blah blah. I then remind
him that in the state of Arizona the ticket issued
for his failure to wear the seatbelt would be issued to

Break your neck and we drop all charges?
  Now there's a real deal...

You know how hard Jefferson County has been
working to get people to put their
seatbelts on? It's not rocket science, and
it's one of the easiest ways to avoid serious
  injury.

I then remind
him that in the state of Arizona the ticket issued
for his failure to wear the seatbelt would be issued to
*me* and he can walk if he prefers. I then hear a click
and he is silent for a minute or two.

My car doesn't move unless everybody has their seat belt on. Only pure
morons who have never been in an accident would even consider not wearing one.

Idiocy.

Does anyone actually know for sure that she was not wearing a
 seatbelt?

She was thrown from the car.

You can still get injured wearing one. And how, pray, does
Mr. Archer think it probable that she was driving too fast? How
does
he know? Was he there? Seems to me there's a lot of blame being
heaped
on this unfortunate woman without much knowledge of the facts.

feste, please ! Since when did Mr. Archer bother with facts ? Facts
is a word this fellow really, really dislikes.

That doesn't prove anything about how fast she was driving. There
could have been many causes of the crash -- maybe there was an animal
on the road and she was trying to avoid it. I have no idea, but I
think it's wrong to pile on blame without knowing facts.

She was driving on a dirt road with curves in it. Skid marks
indicated she
went into a skid and lost control of the vehicle, which went off the
road
 and rolled.

You're right about that. it's clear that she wasn't wearing a seat belt, but
it was sloppy of me to suggest that she was driving too fast. She may, as
you said, have been trying to avoid an animal. Deer are common out there.
I'm not trying to pile on blame. Molly is a friend of mine and I feel
nothing but concern and compassion for her. Here's something I received by
email

During the prayer session last night at Divine Mother Church we received a
message:

Molly will have a full recovery although it may take several months for her
to regain her ability to dance. All the prayers for her are enabling the
divine beings to fill her body with more and more healing light and grace.
She is not suffering. This accident was necessary for her evolution and
because of unavoidable karma. It will advance her spiritual growth toward
Enlightenment dramatically. We suggest prayers for the family as well. They
will be they support team that will insure her complete recovery. When she
can move she should see notable healers. She can use many healers, Connie,
John of God (he will hasten much of the physical process when she starts to
walk), others. This is not a tragedy at all. Do not give up on her. Divine
Mother is holding her in grace will continue blessing her.
