ot - Ever ubiquitous pee
Remember the thread where everyone was trying to figure out where the urine odor was coming from? (Kelley, I'm sure you do). Well, someone has contaminated my dryer. I'm not sure how they did it. I'm assuming they backed up, aimed and fired into the crevices around the opening of the door, but I guess it could be in the air filter. All I know is that I've scrubbed and sprayed and scrubbed some more. Every time I think it's safe to dry a load of clothes they come out of the dryer smelling not springtime fresh, but of fresh kitty. Whoever marked the dryer must be thrilled, everything smells of their scent now. Any suggestions? Do I have to get a new dryer and house it behind chain link? Nina

I don't even try anymore - well, I do, but clearly it is ineffective. They actually moved me at work so that I have a 2 seat buffer between me and the next closest person in any direction. *sigh*. Thanks for the sympathy. The dryer is such an ingenuous touch. How clever this particular little fiend is, (I don't know which of my clan is the culprit). Not only does the dryer bake in the fragrance, but it is then carried about all over the house, (not to mention everywhere I might travel). It's so darn efficient of them! All the fabric throws covering the furniture are now pre-marked :-) . Nina elizabeth trent wrote: Oh no! Nina, you have all my sympathy. Many years ago our cat peed in my son's basket of fresh laundry just before we left for vacation. We didn't realize what had happened until we were on the plane and I became aware of a powerful odor on Andrew's person, which turned out to be the clothes he had retrieved from the basket and was wearing. We had to change planes, so we made a beeline for a gift shop in search of clean clothes to wear for the rest of the flight. As soon as we checked into the hotel at our destination, I bagged up everything in his suitcase and took it to the front desk to be laundered. You can also take your used coffee grounds and put them around the bases of your hydrangeas to give the soil the acidity that they need. Good for the color. Anyone feed a raw diet to their FeLV+ cats?
And how has it worked for you? I started feeding a raw diet from here http://www.catnutrition.org/recipes.html a few weeks ago. The problem is, i've been having crisis after crisis in my house with my 5 cats, and am wondering if the raw diet has anything to do with it. After Tomi got sick with anemia and he and Kisa tested positive for FeLV, I started out trying the raw diet, hoping to improve everyone's health. Well last weekend, my 15 year old cat Koda died due to her liver and kidneys shutting down. The vet had no idea what caused it. Then early last week, my 9 year old cat Link seemed a bit under the weather, but pulled out of it just fine. Now, Kisa (my other FeLV) is sick. She's never been sick, and she's almost 3 yrs old. Yesterday morning she vomited after I put her morning food in front of her (without eating anything). She continues to vomit anytime she smells food. I've tried all her favorite treats and she won't touch any of it. She's been over 36 hours now since she's eaten anything. Due to today being a holiday, I can't take her to the vet until tomorrow. Hopefully she'll be safe from fatty liver though, since she is a normal weight. I'm really hoping that my change to raw food isn't causing this. My cats seem to really enjoy the food, and I was hoping that my older overweight ones would reduce to a normal weight on a natural diet, and everyone would be healthier. If anyone has had experiences with raw food, any input would be appreciated. Cassandra
Re: the labs are on their way
Kelly, Nix that list, I for some reason thought you were asking about Oncology specialists. One of my rescues, highly recomends Suzanne Gordan as a vet she used for her FeLV+'s (she rescued FeLV+'s only, she has since stopped rescuing, got overwhelmed). She is in Gig Harbor. Closest one I know of. See her quote below: Suzanne Gordon (who works at the emergency clinic also) is wonderful and may be able to catch something your vet hasn't or know of another thing to try. She often talks w/ the head professor at WSU vet school who knows alot about FeLV, they have both helped me. It is in Gig Harbor so a bit of a drive, but I have been told by many, that she is one of the best vets in the state, if interested her number is 253-851-7866 -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Being normal weight doesn't mean she is safe from fatty liver, overweight cats are just more susceptible it is said, but from experience I'd say that's debatable. Tigger loves those bags to play in. I can hold one open, and he will walk in and lay down, then I can pick him up in it (like he's a sack of groceries), and swing him around in it (he's laying down in the bag upside down at this point, like a hammock). He chirps and then flips over and digs his claws in and digs out through the bottom of the bag, and out he pops! He loves it, he's a silly boy. Re: Anyone feed a raw diet to their FeLV+ cats?
Dixie is eating the Primal raw diet and seems to love it. All the pet food recalls made me really rethink her diet. The Primal is frozen in cubes and you thaw what you need. I mix hers with veggies and water just to increase the volume. It is so concentrated. She gets the calories but not the volume she needs to satisfy her. It appears pretty balanced too. I would hate to try to fully balance a cat's diet on my own. I have a bunch of home-cooked frozen meals for her to supplement the Primal. In the wild or in the barn/alley whatever she would have some variety and I think it is good for her to as a person owning cat. Good luck with your cats. What sort of raw meat did you use? I started off with ground turkey/chicken from the supermarket, but didn't feel comfortable with that, so I bought a meat grinder. Now I grind up turkey/chicken thighs after washing them off. I can't find organic meat in my area, so I have little choice other than to buy meat at the supermarket. I fed my little Baby a raw diet until he went into a home with leukemia cats. He came in as a tiny little thing with horrible URI's and sucked that stuff up like no tomorrow. Used Blakkatz.com or catinfo.org - pretty much the same. Whole chicken thighs ground up in grinder, plus supplements, for 6 months. He did really, really well, and he absolutely loved it. Re: Anyone feed a raw diet to their FeLV+ cats?
Hi everyone. I fed Slinky (+) raw, and am feeding Mouse (-) raw as well. I use Nature's Variety frozen raw, mostly chicken and turkey (though sometimes I mix it up with some lamb or venison) - www.naturesvariety.com. I've found the cats have all loved it once they got used to it. I, too, would be nervous about trying to balance it myself. Slinky died of his felv, but I'm sure it had nothing to do with the raw. I asked my vet the other day (remember? the amazing Dr. G who helped me look for Georgia)...an ALLOPATHIC vet...what she thinks about feeding raw. She said she thinks it's the best thing for them if you do it right (said she tried it with her cats but they didn't like it...she was disappointed and wished they had). She seemed to prefer the idea of buying pre-made since it can be tough to balance it. But she said if I decided to make my own I should just use a trusted recipe, follow it closely, and try to avoid the ones that are high in grains. My best friend asked her HOMEOPATHIC vet about feeding raw to cats and she said she feeds her cats Nature's Variety. That's what I know about feeding raw. There are several good books out there and lots of info online. Good luck...hope they start feeling better GLOW to you and the furkids. Marissa, Mouse, Georgia, Angel Slinky ^..^ p.s. Hi Cassandra, I also used chicken and turkey, mostly chicken, my guys don't care for turkey. I also have a grinder and did the bone thing. I used the recipe on the catnutrition.org site by Dr. Lisa DVM. Most of my guys ate it but Bailey my positive LOVED it, he gained up to a very healthy almost 11 pounds (he is chubby at 10). I cook for them now, Fred my CRF really likes that and has gained back all of the weight he had lost. It's easier to do than raw, I cook about every 4 or 5 days. Each pint jar lasts me a little over a day. One whole chicken makes about 5 pints for me. Still trying to switch the hard liners and haven't been able to make a good dry so thinking I'm going to have to just buy their dry and pray it's OK. Great Snake evening excitement
Ok..So I am alone and head into the bedroom to see several cats curiously looking under the dresser. this can mean, a toad, a bird, a gopher or snake,,,I have already removed a few garter snakes from the cats this year,,, i got down on my hand and knees,,,shooing the cats away and heard a very irritated snake under the dresser. i could not tell if it was a gopher snake or a rattle snake,,,So now what,,there are 13 cats in there and i tried to get them out with out scaring them under the dresser,,favorite hiding place,,I did not want to leave as i needed to keep track of the snake, I tossed a few cats in the bathroom,,slammed the door,,,got one into the closet and scared a few into my cat inclosure and locked them out, that left only 4 more, I called Ashley, my cat helper to come give me a hand,,She arrived a few moments later,,,boots,,,rake and pail,,,but i still needed to get one feral out of the room,,,Well I grabbed her by the scuff and was almost out the door but she turned and really got me good, Several very deep bites but I got her out, Well we got the snake out and once in the light it looked more like a poor little scared gopher snake so we took him out to the vineyards to release him,,, I have pictures if anyone wants to see him,,, the moral of the story is ..well there may not be one,,find a snake in your room and go the emergency room with a cat bite!! What is strange is I have a pair of Red Tail hawks nesting in my palm tree and eating on the telephone pole out side my window,,,each day they seem to come home dangling a snake and i was just commenting that all my snakes will disappear,,,hmmm Kelly
