She has both a Facebook page and a website. I have had a few dealings with her in the past know people that have sent FeLV cats to her. She is well known in sanctuary circles and has a very good reputation. Personally I would not worry about sending a cat to her. For example, a 4-year-old dog or cat would actually be 28 years old in human years. But when you really begin weighing out the arithmetic, this method doesn't add up. Say a 1-year-old dog is the equivalent of a 7-year-old human -- get out of here! How many 7-year-old humans are sexually active and capable of reproducing? Dogs and cats are much more likely to have babies at 1 year old or even at 10 years old, than any person who is 7 or 70. DOGS Aging is much faster during a dog's first two years but varies among breeds. Large breeds, while they mature quicker, tend to live shorter lives. By the time they reach 5 they are considered senior dogs. Medium-sized breeds take around seven years to reach the senior stage, while small and toy breeds do not become seniors until around 10. Kelly, I can understand the second test and yea you need to wait that time. Im sorry that you cant find anyone in your area to hold the cat for the 6 weeks but please DON'T try and put down sanctuaries. We like any rescue look for donations and the good will of people to help us help the animals. Yes almost all sanctuaries that take an animal for life ask for fees( some more than others) but your talking the care and vetting for what could be 10 or so years and with FeLV that can get really expensive. I wish you the best of luck in finding a foster for him, and i pray that he is - so he can be adopted. We could start treatment, but this lady gets more attached to this cat by the day and it really is not fair to her (or the cat) to put him through treatment and then have him PTS. We have an FELV sanctuary, but unfortunately they only take in cats when there is money to be made off them. We did ship a cat to Best Friends once, but they do not always have room either. Like I said, this list has always been my go-to resource for FELV cats and I have found placement for every single one in the past. It is possible he has a false positive, but as he is anemic and sick, I'm leaning towards true +. Unfortunately as I said there is no one to hold him for 6 weeks and if we put him back outside he will be dead in 6 weeks. He's had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which we know there are a lot of false +s with). There is no one to hold him for a confirmatory IFA. Someone wrote me asking for help, this is her description of him: He is slated to be euthanized at 5pm today. This boy is very affectionate, loving to be held, petted, scratched, etc. He was even purring while being petted at the counter at the vet's office with all the strange scents and animal noises going on! He's pretty sick at the moment. Vet says he's extremely anemic. That's why he hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated the problem since he's been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the condition is treatable, but the treatment makes him very infectious. So what he needs is an indoor home either in a one-cat household or in a house where all the cats are feline leukemia positive. It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to find someone who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have to be euthanized. I've asked for pics etc I also asked for an extra day which is hopefully being negotiated. She has family in PA and goes up there several times a year so driving a distance isn't a problem for her. Plus we have other people who can drive them to various other states. The kittens will be fully vetted and spayed or neutered. My rescue is a very small group. We don't have a shelter facility, we just have foster homes. We don't have a long term place for the kittens. Can anyone help or offer suggestions? We've only had one ELISA test done on the kittens but the mother cat had two positive ELISA tests and we're waiting on the IFA results for her. Because of that I'm thinking the kittens who tested positive are really positive. Think we should do an IFA test on them? I feel certain that they are truly positive but who knows. Also two of their littermates have tested negative on their first ELISA. How long should we wait before re-testing? Do you guys think those kittens could really be negative or is it more likely that it just isn't showing up yet for some reason? I know I've heard some of you say that you had a positive and a negative kitten that were littermates that came from a positive mother cat. But does that happen very often? Please let me know if anyone can put me in touch with a sanctuary for the kittens. We might need one for the mother but for now I'll just worry about the kittens. First off THERE IS NO CURE for FeLV. I have heard of all kinds of things that are supposed to give great extensions of life to cats with FeLV, but have yet to see any kind of results. After 8 years of specializing in nothing but Fe-Luk cats i have found that, love, attention, basic supplements ( iron,L-lysine, and the like) are the best treatments for them. Adding things like high O2 water helps as well.( moving water not in a bowl). I know that many are going to say things like interferon, transfusions and like are good for them but they only prolong the inevitable. This virus will at some point in the cats life cause issues that will have grave consequences. once a cat gets beyond a year it is all up to the immune system. We have had a cat that had gone as long as 18 years old before she was taken by the virus. Since then I've had a few of my other kitties tested with the combo/snap test at the vet's office. All have come out negative so far, thank the Lord for that. These other kitties that have tested negative lived with Two Face for over a year. Sharing litterboxes, food bowls and all that stuff. I would think that would mean that they had enough exposure to the virus to get it in their system and that they either extinguished the virus or put it into a dormant status. Is that a reasonable assumption? My main question now is should I give them a FeLV vaccination. If they did get the virus in their system and extinguished it then they're immune for life, right? If so, there's no need for a vaccination. Is it possible with all that exposure that they didn't get enough of the virus into their system to do any harm? If that's the case then I should vaccinate them? I just don't know how they could not have gotten enough exposure since they lived together and shared everything for over a year. Thoughts? It's a flawed business model. A sanctuary by definition offers lifetime care So they fill up fast and, as the population ages, become more and more expensive to maintain. And usually the people who try to start sanctuaries keep taking in new animals, sometimes because they need the surrender fee to keep the operation running and sometimes because they simply have a hard time saying no. This is just not a sustainable model. The few good long term sanctuaries really limit the population. And they very often have an adoption component that allows them to make space by placing animals in good homes. You just can't keep taking animals in with no way to decrease the population. Weasley has twice tested FELV+ on snap tests and the rescuer does not have funds for an IFA. It is a bit of a complicated story, my friend who rescued him was volunteering at a high volume low-cost spay day when sweet little Weasley was brought in, he had horrible scabies and the person who brought him wouldn't keep him and he was going to be euthanized. My friend took him home, treated him for scabies (he was neutered at the clinic but not tested), and came accross another rescue volunteer who wished to adopt him, which she did but he since tested + for FELV twice and so she returned him. Since his history is unknown, we do not know if he was born with it/infected as a kitten or more recently as a teen on the streets. My rescue friend is in a difficult situation, she is one who saves so many cats that no one else steps up to help and is loaded with more than 30 cats and fosters, including several very hard to place special needs cats (including a somewhat traumatized, 4 paw declaw deaf white kitty who was living on the streets and needs a home badly as well), and her young husband is going through chemo for a brain tumor. She is a graduate student with a lot on her hands and mounting cat situations and has no where to keep this sweet boy separate other than caged, she has to be careful since she has so many fosters to be adopted out who can't be exposed. Weasley is so sweet and described to have the personality of a puppy! He has a shortie tail, about 1/3 - 1/2 of a regular tail, making him even cuter. I was told he is about 6 months old. tonight we lost our queen, Lita. our very first FeLV cat, she was 18 yrs old. Lita started out as Pink at the SPCA. she was the house cat there for a few years, and was given to me after finding out that my chemo had failed and what i had would eventually kill me. This huge torte was a pissy old girl and would hiss at everything. she at her best was about 20 lbs of pure joy. she would come up to you and head butt you to get petted, and then jump in your lap and just lay there. Lita died at home surrounded by those who loved her, laying on my daughters jacket with her by her side petting her to the end Lita had been with us for 8 long years and had been treated for everything from Uri's to arthritis, to the starting of a feline form of glaucoma, but she held on and fought for all this time finally giving in to liver failure. Safe travels across the bridge Lita. you will be missed. thank you for making Second Chance possible I know i don't send a lot of things here but we here at Second Chance try to do the best we can while running a full house. Please remember that the smaller rescues and homes like us do this from our own pockets. They have a dedicated area for FeLV+ cats and will attempt to adopt them out to caring homes. my suggestion is to do some research on it. Interferon is used to fight forms of cancer, and is considered to be chemo. side effects include: loss of weight, nausea,hair loss, heart issues, pain, chills,temperature, and many others. I know your talking about low doses of it but anything that is placed into these little bodies that has the power to kill not only the bad cells BUT THE GOOD ONES TOO can not be good for them. their systems are compromised already. JUST MY OPINION. before you make the decision to give this to the cat...look into your own heart and ask is this for the cat..or for yourself?? will this really improve the quality of its life or just prolong the agony its going thru or create more agony,stress for it? This also makes me suspicious about the long term viability of the place. You have to be committed to finding homes for the cats. They need human families, attention, and they won't get that in a giant sanctuary setting.
