Re: OT - 2 things/tonya
Tonya www.healthypets.com Has the feliways cheap and 2.95 for shipping as much as you want and over $100something is free. I use them and like their service all and all they have the best prices when you add the shipping in so far that I found! I would use the plug ins but after cleaning use the spray too! Spray works better in my house. As for your sofa, my x brought in a used sofa in great shape well until then never had a pee problem with cats, I think the past owner had a cat and the cat's smell was on the sofa so I battled the pee on the sofa. I found 2 things that worked well. One I bought Get Serious (sold Foster smith) and in Petsmarts. You put it in the micro and heat then spray and dap and dry. I used a blow dryer cos I was in a rush. Also Foster and Smith sells Cat Detgerrent I swear by this stuff. If you can wash you can get the smell out with this stuff. Soak the area then put in wash with more CD and the smell is gone. I had a bedspread that became a marking zone and I did this and it stopped the war. Last month the one cat go excited (happy) and wet the bed spread soaked the spot washed and fine and dandy. I also like giving the cats Rock Water, Emergency, Chestnut Budd and Cherry Blossom Flower essences. Emergency is like Rescue but it worked 100% in my house for a cat that had mental problems in spraying. (not over night did the trick for her) You can get all of these at: http://www.blackkatherbs.com/ Sandi the owner is great and can help you with any mixes and make mixes for your cats She helped solve a aggressive problem in my house with cats nosodes she made for me. We still have some issues but s much better. Carla

I don't think an fiv test is considered definitive on a cat under 3 or 6 months. I don't remember which it is. I know I wish shelters didn't test for fiv anymore because it is not a bad enough disease to euthanise for and there are so many false positives. I don't consider fiv cats to be a problem to keep in my house. I will try to find the article and post it or mail it to you when I locate it. (RIght now I am in hurricane preparation mode so all is upside down). Anyway, they did exhaustive research and found out that a large percentage of cats that tested positive were not positive. And, of those that were, only 10% became ill and died of fel leuk - the rest died of natural causes. You might want to put that kitty on interferon - I have a friend who cares for a large group of fel leuk positives and she always gives them interferon to help boost the immune system. AC
Hi Kat, I have a question not sure if you can answer this but I have a cat bengal that came to the house one day. I have him up for adoption but he had some health issues so I was holding back on adopting meanwhile he is best buds with one of my cats. He has know started to mark places in the house. Most of the places where places the cat that was marking (that stopped). My question is do you know if he is unhappy here, has he always done this is he trying to tell me something. I had him tested for urine. I had complete blood work done he drinks like a horse too! He knows better cos if I see him and he is gonna start I yell and he runs like he knows this is not right. Any ideas you can see Thanks Carla
RE: AC - cats marking
Kat Thanks I never thought of the spray bottle. He was an indoor outdoor declawed cat! I know that declaws sometimes do this. I always tell him he is a good boy when I see him use the box. I am using some flower essences with him and also have the feliway plug ins and the spray(which I use after cleaning the wall) I will keep the visions of him being calm and relaxed with the other. I know with multi cat house hold especially foster it's hard. I welcome all new ideas it's a challenge to find out what the problem is. I solved the felmale cats problem a year ago through trial and error. Thank you so much Carla

Norman was quite healthy up until a month ago when he became lethargic and his appetite diminished. Blood work showed him to be anemic (13) so we did a transfusion which improved his condition a bit for a few weeks but he still wasn't eating much and hadn't much energy. Tuesday night suddenly he could no longer stand up and seemed in real distress so we took him to the vet in the morning and helped him cross over to the bridge. It's always an agonizing decision to make but I feel it was the right one. I just wanted to thank you to everyone for their advice and for listening. This is the third cat we've lost in less than 2 years (the others due to other illnesses). For statistics, Norman was 5 years old but I don't know how long he was FELV+ (was only initially tested 2 years ago). It's such a horrible disease, I hope someday some of my money can go to research. For now, we're going to retest our other three cats, hope they continue to be negative and go from there. I know there will be more furkids in our lives. Thank you for listening. Robin
Re: Carla - marking behaviorNina
Nina Thanks for your input The new cat is marking one I think it's cos I think he is trying to show he belongs and has marked in the place where the other two sleep on the walls near the cage they sleep. I think he is trying to let them know he is there. Now they all have seemed to be ok but Cheetah I think has issues that were not address earlier as he was neutered late, indoor/outdoor declawed cat! He has the 3 strikes the 1st time I caught him he didn't know he was doing wrong. I keep him separate while I am not home. I think this weekend or next I will put his crate in the room with the other two so this way they can maybe get the sense they are all there together. I crate my fosters at night (can't deal will the high volume of cats at night) Day time Cheetah is in our garage till I get home and the others are in the house. So that may be the next step, but I agree with the sending messages. Thanks again Carla

After some testing, they narrowed it down to a couple of things - and they are hoping that fluid therapy and the antibiotics will treat her - please pray for Cork's recovery - a poor baby, she is very scared there, she is never out of the house and I really want to be able to bring her home soon! Also, last Saturday, I rescued a boy kitty who I had been feeding for several months now. I noticed that he lost lots of weight (I hadn't seen him for a couple of weeks) - and I took him to the vet - everything seems to be OK except that on ELISA, he tested positive on FIV - now I am having Cornell Lab to do the western blot (as I had a couple of cats who tested positive on FIV via ELISA, and ended up negative later) - anyway, now I have to figure out where to place him - he must have belonged to someone a long time ago, as he is very friendly and used to people. I talked to Carl (I named him Carl) via AC - Carl told my AC that he used to be an indoor kitty when she was a kitten, and somehow he became an outdoor kitty, and somehow, then he did not have a home anywhere - I asked via AC, if he would like to stay with me and to be an indoor kitty, he said he would like that very much - I hope his lost weight is just a temporary, and I am so praying that the western blot will come back as negative - please also pray for Carl's well-being, he is such a sweet baby, and he has had a rough life since he had lost home...

Michelle, I am sorry to hear about Bramble. My Bamama had full blown aides for 3 yrs. I found different things to keep her going for 2 1/2 yrs but I had to be home to feed her everyday for lunch too and I was lucky to live so close to home. He then went into a seizure - writhing around for about 4 minutes and has just done that for another minute about 30mins later. The other 2 cats are scared again. I'm pretty sure this will have to be a euthansia case today - I am going to push on the flea treatment adverse effects though - but I can say that he is now suffering and I can't let him suffer if they can't do anything. These decisions hurt so bad but my baby boy without doubt is in the full blown faids stage - his weight is plummeting fast even though he has eaten. I just hope if the vet says the E word and I go ahead that it is right for him. Whilst I think the flea treatment may well have exacerbated this I'm sure the FIV is a lot to blame too. I'll let you know the outcome. Michelle L
AC: Charmed/Bamama
Hi I have two cats that I loved that passed away, Charmed was Felv+ then tested negative after 1 1/2 yrs then 6week later discovered he had cancer and died. Both were very special in different ways and both left me with a sadden heart that I still cry about often. He was very smart I would like to know if he really understood and was he happy the time he spend with us even though he was seperated from his siblings. . It's 4 yrs almost and I still miss him. I had to make a choice when he had a heartattack not to try and bring him back and it hurt a lot not too. Was he ok with that? Bamama was like my little watch dog. If my boyfriend yelled at me she would fluff up and protect me. She became anemic when her spleen was removed and with full flown aides as it was it was too much to battle. Even in the end as I cried to pts she dragged her body (she had a seizure the night before) to me to comfort me on last time. It's been almost 3 yrs for her. Is she ok and does she forgive me for the mistakes I made and my paients was running a little low when she didn't want to eat and I would get annoyed with her. Can you tell me anything about either one and how they feel or anything about them now that they have passed? Carla [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: outcome of anemia - Immuno-Regulin
I tried Immuno-Regulin for a fiv anemic cat. Helped alittle But she had too many other things going on she was at the stage of full blown aides, her immunes system was 0. She was anemic due to her spleen was removed since they thought it was cancer but turned out it had some toxic cells but not cancer. Trick is to use the right amount of Immun each cat is different and has different side effects or reactions, it's a trial and error to find the dose that works well with that cat that is on it. There is an article on this group's website about it. Anecdotally there seems to be some success with it helping anemic cats, where the anemia is not caused by lymphoma, leukemia, or hemobartonella. However, another cause of anemia is an auto-immune reaction that causes the body to kill its own red blood cells, and steroids are prescribed for this-- and I think Immuno-Regulin could make this condition worse. Marleen My heart goes out to you at this time. I know that Digby will be missed and will live in your hearts forever. Again I am truly sorry for your loss of sweet Digby. Carla From: Marlene Chornie [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Date sent: Thu, 26 May 2005 12:28:24 -0400 Subject:Digby has passed Send reply to: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Dear Group, It is with great sadness that I tell you that Digby crossed over on Tues. evening (Mar. 24th). I had taken him to the vet clinic that morning, to obtain some repeat blood work to check his numbers from the previous week. Our intent was to then take him the next morning to see his regular vet for a follow-up assessment and results from the blood tests, and then more than likely make our decision. We had been syringe feeding him this past weekend, since Sat. evening when he just couldn't/wouldn't take anything we had been hand feeding him. Thankfully, this kept his strength and weight up. In between feedings, he was comfortable in his various safe places sleeping. Late Tues. afternoon, after he used the litter box he immediately became winded - laid down on the floor, panting and softly moaning when he exhaled. I knew that was his sign to me. I called my husband to come home from work and when he arrived we called the vet clinic. They had run their own PCV (Hematocrit), and it was down to 10% (N = 24 - 45%). Two of the vets came to the house after we had some time to spend with Digby. One of the vets had requested to come with the other one, as she had come here last summer to help our CRF baby Casper cross, and said she wanted to be with us this time as well. We were very touched by her compassion and concern for us. Digby passed very peacefully in his favourite spot - in our bay window on a pillow looking outside at the birds. He gently laid his head down and closed his eyes. We were so relieved at the peacefulness and tranquility of it. That morning, I had discussed our wishes with the vet clinic. Digby will be separately cremated and his ashes returned to us in an urn. We made it known to them that if they wished to autopsy him for tissue samples, etc. to gain perhaps some more insight into Feline Leukemia, that was O.K. with us. Our thought is that perhaps Digby's passing can serve some greater good for others suffering with this. They felt that the Animal Health Lab at the Veterinary College in our province would be interested in samples, to add the information to their database. This lab is the one that had done most of Digby's blood tests. I will continue to read the posts on this forum, as our other furbaby Pekoe is also FelV+. He's doing fine healthwise - as far as we know. I believe he realizes that Digby isn't here anymore, but I know he'll be fine. Many thanks to all of you for sharing your trials and tribulations. I would like to share a phrase with you that I came across just yesterday. I find it very consoling at this time - A gentle sleep is sometimes the kindest answer to the most impossible question of all ... Marlene

Carla Date sent: Mon, 23 May 2005 16:47:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Jamie Laws [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject:Andy is gone Send reply to: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond about Andy. I do appreciate it. Barb, Sharon, Yvonne, Terrie, Belinda and anyone else I may have missed- it was good to hear from you again. To the others- it was good to meet you for the first time. I did take him to the vet first thing this morning. Dr. Caldwell was in surgery so I saw Dr. Baxter instead. Also a very nice man. Every person in that place has just been wonderful! He looked at Andy's chart and said he hoped I didn't think of them as bad since my very first experience there has been this ordeal with my baby boy. Anyway, he was very straight forward and said while he wanted to commend me on an outstanding job taking care of a Felv+ cat for this long, that there was not much he could do and that this was the beginning of the end. Whatever was going on had his insides in shreds. The vet said even if I WANTED him to run tests, he was 99% sure that Andy would not come out of the sedation in that state. Barb- it was so strange. He held up Andy's face so we were eye to eye and said Mrs. Laws, tell me, do you really see Andy there anymore? And the answer was no. So I started bawling and babbling about how I didn't warn my husband that this was a possibility this morning and he just went to work without saying goodbye. I mean I was a crying freak and I just met the man! So he gave me a small TOWEL and said I was not having a Kleenex cry so to take a towel. Then he told me we were not making the call right now, and not like that. He gave him a bag of fluids and a shot of Prednisone and told me to talk to my husband first. I went back to work, then came and got Andy at lunch. I took him home and spent the afternoon with him. He pooped blood all over himself TWICE. The second time I was washing him off in the sink and he had one of his episodes (Dr. Baxter said these were probably small strokes rather than seizures). But this time it lasted a long, long time. He quit breathing and went limp in my arms. No noise, no chest movement. He was gone. So I laid him on the floor on the towel and my phone rang, it was my husband. So I was hysterical telling him Andy just died in my arms and I was freaking out. Right then, Andy let out this gaspy, panting type breath and started convulsing. Then he just kind of sat up a little bit like nothing happened! But he was dead I tell you. So then I really freaked out and said he's not dead! I mean screaming it. So Abe (husband) asked what freeway the new vet was off of since he was on his way home. I told him where it was and he just said I am meeting you there right now. So I knew. I was not going to keep him through the night to spend a little more time together. That was it. He was suffering and I was thinking of what I needed to be okay and not Andy. I wrapped him in a towel and drove to the vet. I called first and again, just crying into the phone I managed to get out I had my cat in there this morning and... that's all I could get out. The poor girl who answered said I'm so sorry Jamie, we will see you in a minute. She knew my name and I hadn't even mentioned the cat's name. Guess I was the only bawling woman in with a cat today. Anyway, I managed to choke out but you close in 15 minutes. She just said we'll be here. It was so wonderful to be treated with compassion. My old vet would have said well ER hours start in 15 minutes so just be prepared to pay double. Anyway, I met Abe there and Dr. Baxter took us back to the treatment area. Andy laid on the table very still and I petting him and kissed his little face as the vet gave him the injection. I have never witnessed an animal bing PTS in real life. I'm sorry if this is all too graphic but it helps me to get it out. I was surprised that his eyes didn't close and nothing changed. I didn't realize he was gone until the vet said ok, his heart stopped. Then I lost it. The never agains hit me like a ton of bricks. He will never do his cold nose bumping and tiny front teeth nipping on my husband's inner arm trying to get him to pet him. He will never serve as my fun police when I want my great dane to stop bringing his toy to me. I would just lay it on the coffee table right next to Andy who was always ready with his right hook. That kept Apollo in check. He would NOT go for that toy if Andy was sitting by it. :) I will never again have my soft little lap warmer as I sit at my

So he is in the early stages of cardiomyapathy (he is 10 years old and negative). He will have to take medication once the radioligist verifies the vets findings, but I also want to get him on some kind of natural supplements that are beneficial for the heart. On Friday night we noticed her breathing was heavier and more rapid then normal. She was also lethargic and her appetite had decreased. On Saturday evening she was even breathing with her mouth open at times so we took her into the animal emergency office. I didn't realize how much I appreciate my normal vet until I talked to this guy. He was very negative and made us feel like we were giving Roxie a poor quality of life by keeping her alive. But the thing is, until last week, she has always been very healthy. He did soften up a little toward the end of the visit (I was in tears by this point). They put Roxie on oxygen for about an hour and gave her shots of Dexamethasone and Brethine, hoping that it would open her airways. So far, she is some better, but her breathing does get worse when she gets stressed, and giving her he antibotics really stresses her. I just hope that she is able to get passed this. I am at my wits end. I plan to take her back to the regular vet on Monday unless she is dramatically better. Thanks for listening, I really appreciate this group so much. Re: o/t blockage question
They usually do that in extreme cases have they tried change of food and perscriptions? My friend had a male cat and they said they were going to do that he opted not to and they have had no problems they usually don't mention this unless there is a chronic problem. I would switch to food that they sell at the vet I used Hills cdx for a cat with chronic problems she is a female cat. I also give her solid gold berry mix which is good for urinary problem cats. Have had no problem in 2 yrs with her. She is on the hills prescription there are other formulas but she did best with this one. Also I would try corn silk tea this has worked for my cats now I use this when the cat seems to not urinate as much and then bam the cat is back to normal. You brew it and give 1/2t 3 x a day. I keep this on hand. If the cat has problems still 24hours later and not back to normal then I call the vet. BUT if the cat is not at all and straining then I would go to the vet asap. The problem was blockage--and McKillips recommended, and then carried out, removal of the cat's penis. Has anyone heard of such a remedy for blockage? It seems extraordinary, to put it mildly. Re: need help - a negative, later positive - ?
I would have the cat retested on IFA. Cats can test negative if they are postive if it's during the intal virus incubation. We had a cat test negative in our group the kittens got adopted. One got really sick took to vet and he tested postitive. All the other did too. Retested the mom and she was positive. My guess the the cat was just infected and had not gone thru the blood stream. Or could just be a false positive meaning the cat was around a cat that was positive. Hard to tell I would retest and if + retest in 3 months. If it's early enough then maybe the kitten can through off the virus. Carla Date sent: Wed, 06 Apr 2005 09:29:00 -0500 To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org From: Gloria B. In addition to glaucoma in his enlarged eye, he has a luxated lens, cataracts and corneal ulceration. He has cataracts in his 'good' eye, as well as the prolapsed lens. The opthamologist (she was great!) recommends removing his right eye and monitoring the left eye (he has some drops for it) for 2-3 months. The left eye does have the potential to rupture as his right eye has. He's not a youngster and he's FIV+, so I am debating whether to have both eyes removed in one surgery instead of doing one and then finding out in a year that the other one needs to come out. The practice I went to is all specialists (dermatolgists, cardiologists, etc.) and I was really impressed with everyone there. My husband is having surgery next week to repair an abdominal aneurysm (wow, the fun never stops around here!) so I was thinking about seeing if Brownie could have surgery while Steve's in the hospital and then I'd either get them both home about the same time or check myself into the insane asylum!!! Thanks to all of you for your good thoughts for Brownie; he was such a trooper on the long ride! Hugs and headbutts! Re: Brownie needs good thoughts
Julie Healing vibes to Brownie. Is the lense detached? Bamama had that and was semi blind for two years. She could see light but not really good the vet sad she saw shadows. Brownie's in my thoughts and prayers. Carla Date sent: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 06:18:31 -0800 (PST) From: Julie Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Copies to: Subject:Brownie needs good thoughts Send reply to: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Dear Friends, I've written in the past about Brownie, my FIV+, blind and deaf cat. When he came to me after TNR (obviously he could not be released) he had been vetted and I was told about his disabilities. I assumed (NEVER again) that his eyes had been examined and that nothing could be done for him, but sort of had it in the back of my mind to take him to the veterinary opthamologist who I took Paulie to for a specialty opinion. He seems wonderfully happy, has gained lots of weight, lays in his poofy bed purring like he's in heaven, so other things kept coming up and I just never did it. About 10 days ago I was looking into some feline eye diseases because Trixie has an eye infection that I can't clear up; I suspected entropion (which she in fact does have). I saw a photo of a kitty with a hideously enlared eyeball and the caption said it was glaucoma and that it's extremely painful in cats. It looked just like Brownie's eye, so off to my vet we went (along with Trixie, to have the entropion checked, and she does have it, though a mild case we will try to treat with steroid drops before we do any surgery). Brownie does in fact have glaucoma in that eye and has a prolapsed lens in the other eye. I can't even describe how sick and furious I am. I immediately called my friend Joan and had her check his chart (I adopted him from her organization) and there is nothing on it recommending any follow-up or other treatment for his eyes; not even a diagnosis other than blind. We both assumedshe's dealing with the vets who seeminly chose to ignore the condition of his eyes (hey, he's old, he's FIV+, deaf, blind, skin and bonesso what, don't treat him?) and I am taking him to a veterinary opthamologist in Rhode Island this afternoon. It's possible that both his eyes will need to be removed, but we won't know until she examines him. She sounded great on the phone so I am hopeful that we'll get a good diagnosis. I just want him to be pain-free. He doesn't show signs of pain, but we all know how good kitties are at hiding it. So, if you could all keep Brownie in your thoughts, I'd be so appreciative. felv + white kitten looking for home in Houston TX
Hi all I received this from a friend in the houston TX area. If anyone can help please email the name below or you can email me off line. I have pictures of this guy he is very cute. Hopefully someone can take him. Carla He also as affectionate as he is beautiful. Snowbell was found abandoned at an area mall on Christmas Eve, 2004.He was extremely cold and frightened, and he was meowing, asking -- begging -- for someone to please help him. Luckily, one of our rescue group volunteers heard his cries amidst the snow flurries that evening and immediately came to his aid. Snowbell was underweight and undernourished. We fed him, nurtured him and brought a gleam to both to his eyes and to his soft white coat. That snowy Christmas Eve, we made a promise to help Snowbell every way we can. Now, what Snowbell needs most is a fantastic forever home! He is a healthy 8-month old, who is neutered, up-to-date on shots and FeLV+. He is a kitty who is grateful to be rescued. He will thank whomever adopts him with loads of purrs and hugs! If you think you may have a potential adopter for Snowbell, please let me know. Anyone who lives with this wonderful kitty will be a very fortunate person indeed! She was looking really good last Sunday/Monday and only looked OK on Tuesday but by Wednesday night/Thursday morning she had stopped eating completely and Thursday did not move at all (except to occassionally turn over). Force feeding was not an option because it could have landed her back in the oxygen tank. I now believe that the ONLY treatment for her anemia that she benefitted from was the blood transfusion, and we knew that the effects that had would be temporary. She didn't seem to respond favorably (or at least quickly) to the Epogen or the steroids and taking heroic measures (force or tube feeding, another temporary blood transfusion, etc.) would not have been humane, in our opinion. She was very weak and her quality life had disappeared almost overnight. We are very sad but not surprised by Gary's outcome. We were hoping she would be healthy for longer but are grateful that we could give her a nice couple of months so she didn't have to die in the shelter or on the street. She had a great personality and will be impossible to replace. FYI: I'm going to unsub from list. I only have limited experience with FeLV and this was my only cat with it. Re: question
Tonya I think it depends on the cat. Peggy had a cat with cancer and was anemic. They gave her less than 2 months to live. They put her on Pred to make her cat more confortable. She live over 18 months longer. She was getting B-12 shots for the anemia and pred for the cancer. So it helped her cat I think. She had overgroomed to the point of developing the neoplasta..whatever stuff. She was semiferal, so I didn't take her in until I absolutely had to. She developed a URI (probably from the office, as no one here had one) and never recovered. I think the stress of the office visit, probably getting the uri from there, and the pred. combined is what caused me to lose her. What do you all think? And what can I recommend for overgrooming if not pred? She's been doing this for a while. The last time I took her in the vet said it wasn't enough to worry about, but it's getting worse. When I told my vet on Saturday that I didn't think pred. was a good choice for a positive she said we could always try some sort of kitty prozac. Is there one any of you think is safe for a positive? Do you agree with the pred. idea? Thanks for any input! Tonya
