also, a previously 'negative' cat could in fact have a latent infection which
does not show up.  This can go on for potentially years and later turn positive
when sick/stressed.

Sure, if the cat got outside or are otherwise exposed to other cats. Not all
cats coming into contact with a positive cat will contract the virus.Plus the
virus can take 90 days to show up on a test. You'd have to be more specific
about the circumstances - when all the cats were tested, what kind of test, are
the cats indoors/outdoors?

Tigger passed very suddenly, from what we believe to be a feline heart issue

He has been playing that morning, being silly as usual, not wanting me to go to
work, as usual
When i came home, he was gone

you probably had the SNAP done

wait a few weeks, then do the IFA

and remember, that they can live very rich lives, being just as loving (more
so, in my opinion), and being silly.

Bless you for taking this little one in

Hi John!

Thanks so much for your quick replywow, you had 6 cats all in the house??
That would be heaven for me:)))  My husband is NOT  a cat lover, so he was not
particularly happy stepping in the poop today:(

I'm thinking we were chasing the kids in the house at about the time she  left
her mess.  Maybe she was scared and it justall ran out??  I hate to keep her in
the basement now, but I don't want any surprises during the night.  She does
have plenty of blankets down there with her food and two litter boxes.

I do not know what test she was given.  If it's not too difficult for you to
discuss, could you tell me how your Tigger's health deteriorated towards the
end?    So I might know what signs to look for

Hope your other kitties are healthy:)

Thanks again for your time!

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me

We live in the country and have about 8 outside cats.   A friend decided to
take one home, Pumpkin, and had her all fixed up at the vet with shots, spay
and declaw.  She found out she has  feline leukemia.  She kept her for about a
month, but I guess she was making a mess as far as using the litter box.  I
told her I didn't want her to go to an over crowded humane society, so I took
her back.  She is now in the house, as she is front declawed, and she is not to
be around the other cats with her cancer.

So... I've had her home since just before Christmas, and she's been fine other
than not eating a whole lot.  Her stool is quiet soft, and I did find a few
hard turds in two different sleeping places that she uses.  Well now today,
she had a ver messy stool on the wood floor in the hallway!! Really shocked me
as she's been so good using the littler box.

Is this a sign that she is getting sick, the not using the littler box?  She
has a prescription for Tylosin Tartrate, and she said to give this to
her(powder form), when/if she gets sick???

She does seems to sleep most of the day, but I know cats do do that:)  She also
does purr quite loud!!  Must be a good sign.  She will play with a string too.
So she's been very happy, but now I had to resort to putting her back in the
basement with her food and litter.  I might end  up sleeping down there with
her again, as I did when she first came in thehouse.  She has had the run of
the house now for weeks, but I just don't trust her since her accident.

I've read where infected cats can live quite long, but yet others do not.  I
certainly would not want to put her thru all sorts of treatments...

Thank you for your time:)))

I appreciate any input for my Pumpkin!

Subject: [Felvtalk] Dublin woke up from surgery blind

I am devastated -- my FeLV boy Dublin had major dental surgery yesterday to
remove the rest of his teeth due to severe stomatitis and feline resorptive
lesions (his third dental surgery in six months).  He came through OK it
seemed, and his bloodwork turned out to be very promising (his mild anemia
around December had reversed with his hematocrit in the middle of the normal
range).  But something seemed off with agitation and his eyes and the vet
realized that Dublin seems to be blind.  He did all the ocular tests they do
and nothing physiologically can be found wrong -- no detached retina, no bleed,
no evidence of hypoxia, etc.  But only his left eye is even minimally reactive
to light.  The vet believes the blindness to be related to the FeLV, although
I'm still totally confused about the suddenness of this all.

Dublin has always had something weird about his eyes -- the pupils stay mostly
dilated and while they constrict a little it's definitely not like a normal
cat.  I wondered if he had an eye problem and could see well even before I
adopted him and learned he was FeLV+.  But he seemed to see fine.

While Dublin is physically stable he is apparently extremely agitated and the
vet wants to keep him at the hospital until he settles down and begins to
adapt.  He was with him until 10:30 last night and says that Dubbie has
scarcely been out of a tech's arms since.  (He is the most loving,
people-oriented cat, and is not stressed just from being at the vet -- it's
almost a joke how much he likes it there.)  I am crazy with distress and also
with anxiety about bringing him home (have another cat, pretty rowdy, and a
dog), though everyone says blind cats can do well.

I'd appreciate any encouragement -- or in particular any insight into a
FeLV-blindness link.

the beginning with fevers but we finally got that under control.  He has gone
over 6 years with no problems or sickness.  The other day I felt a very large
knot on his left front leg.  I took him to the vet to get it checked out.  He
thought it was probably cancer.  He removed it today but he couldn't get all of
it.  He described it as having tenticles going in all different directions.  He
is sending it off to be sure it is cancer and what type.  I have never dealt
with this before and Smokey's outlook seems pretty grave.  Any opinions would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your replies. Lynda, sorry to hear about your cat.  That's what I

But I do agree as he gets older and is not neutered, he will become very
frustrated.
It is bad enough he can't be with other cats.  When I first called, I was told
they
won't do the surgery b/c of fear of spreading disease in their facility. That
sounded
wrong since arent' they supposed to use sterile procedures and keep animals in
surgery
separate? So I called again and a different person told me the reason was
liability. That
doesn't sound right either since they make you sign a form accepting risk. This
is a facility
that euthanizes feral positive cats upon testing when brought for sterilzation
unless theperson
bringing the cat in takes it back unsterilzed. I do have a private vet but she
has seen only one
cat test positive  in her practice t so I'm not sure if she would know about
risks.

need (Storm).
You have the support of a great fellowship

Over the past 2 years I have lost 3 cats to old

Nothing will replace Tigger, but every new cat brings so much joy.

closes at the end of November and the person who has been feeding it is
going to live with relatives, where the cat is not welcome.

The woman who contacted me is desperate to find a place for the cat by the
end of November and she's willing to cover all vetting costs herself.
Transportation is also available most anywhere.

The cat is called Storm because he showed up after Hurricane Irene. He's a
long-haired black and white neutered male.

If you know of anyone who can help, please contact me and I'll put you in
touch with the woman who's trying so hard to save this poor baby. He's had

I was contacted by someone whose friend has been feeding a
stray cat that's living in a seasonal mobile home park on Chincoteague Island.
The park closes at the end of November and the person who has been feeding it
is
going to live with relatives, where the cat is not welcome.

The woman who contacted me is desperate to find a place
for the cat by the end of November and she's willing to cover all vetting

The cat is called Storm because he showed up after
Hurricane Irene. He's a long-haired black and white neutered male.

If you know of anyone who can help, please contact me and
I'll put you in touch with the woman who's trying so hard to save this poor

John, I know that Tigger would want you to have your heart open to a cat in
need (Storm).
You have the support of a great fellowship of cat lovers.
Over the past 2 years I have lost 3 cats to old age/disease and I immediately
found 3 loving cats that needed a home.
Nothing will replace Tigger, but every new cat brings so much joy.
Good luck with all things feline.

I came across this site, having just been informed by the vet that the
abandoned kitten I took in three weeks ago. Before I took it to the vet,  I
have been keeping it in a separate room but admit that since it seemed so
healthy I let it out for little walks.  I have 4 cats over 12 years old. Other
than walking on the same floors, they have not had contact with this kitten.
In our short phone call, the vet basically said that she would understand if I
euthanized the cat and that she wasn't sure about false positive and whether
retesting would be worthwhile. The cat also has hookworms.  When I took the cat
in, she suggested that I give it its vaccinations before waiting for test
results.  I asked if the cat turned out postitive, wouldn't this harm its
immune system.  she said no.  Now when she called she said she was surprised
that the cat tested positive since, other than the sore gums, which she
attirbuted to teething and bad breath, she said it
seemed healthy.  It does seem healthy , eats well and plays. and is the
sweetest cat, loving and intelligent.  I am heartbroken about this. I'm sorry I
haven't had time to read all archives but I work from home and also take care
of my bedridden elderly mother.  Is there anyone out there would be kind enough
to give me some advice? Thank you. PS  the test done was elisa and it just says
positive the vet estimates the cat is from 5-6 months old.

Message body
I was apart of this list 09/2000 when my husband and I adopted 3 kittens, and
all tested positive. We lost little Vinnie at 8 months due to lymphoma, Molly
developed lymphoma and we treated it. She lived 4 years, the lymphoma never
came back, the feline leukemia took her life. Toots lived 9 years, no problems
until the last month of his life he developed bone cancer. All 3 of my babies
received interferon and dimethylglycine every night. Two years ago we adopted 2
more kittens, they were negative. This past Friday my neighbor#39;s daughter
found a cute orange tabby kitten and asked us if we wanted him.  He tested
positive, but it is not in his bone marrow. I have everyone separated, and am
looking for a home. I know may people mix positive with negative cats, can you
please tell if there are success stories out there or if negative cats became
positive. Thanks, Jo Ann

Please DO  NOT WORRY – if she or “husband” are FIV+, the kittens will be just
fine!
Your vet knows NOTHING about FIV!  It’s a lot different than FeLV
I can guarantee that they will be fine.
DO NOT ABORT THIS LATE – each baby has to be taken out and killed!
I don’t have time to write now, but I can e-mail you personally later, if
that’s OK!
I have had dozens of FIV mothers whose babies were ALL fine!

Hi,

We have someone interested in adopting our FeLV+
boy and it sounds like a great home, but the gentleman smokes. Does anyone know
if this would be a considerable risk for a FeLV cat? I know smoke isn#39;t

Other

Subject: [Felvtalk] doubts on two FeLV positive kitties

Dear all,

It's been a while since I haven't posted to the list. Since my Beltza passed
away, last year
I am still in debt with you guys for all the support you gave me with her.

I cannot remember if I told you that I run a very small cat shelter in
Cuernavaca, México, where I live.

Recently, we rescued two kitties which turned out to be FeLV positive (on a
triple SNAP test, FeLV, FIV and HW, Idexx brand). These two cats are not
siblings, they come from different litters from different parts of México
City.
We are aware that they need to be retested in 3 months in order to be
completely sure that they are FeLV positive.

However, I have a lot of doubts and this is the reason of why I am posting
again...
We want to find nice and responsible families for these two kitties. Does
these kitties need to be adopted as the only cat in the house? Can they
share their lives with other cats? FeLV negative as long as they have their
vaccines up-to-date? Can we give them together in adoption? Can they share
their lives with other FeLV positive cats?
We are also aware of the huge responsibility that is in our hands at the
time of giving these two furry ones in adoption, we know that we need to
find homes that are well documented, and that intend to keep them indoors.
We would greatly appreciate any advice you could give us in order to ensure
a great life for these two little guys.

Thanks in advance,
Ana

Subject: [Felvtalk] Cali - 7 month old kitten

I am new the site and I am just crushed. I have never had cats before and I
adopted a shelter kitten from Petco in Plano, Texas. She had Ringworm to start
with and she was tiny, but she was playful and is as sweet as can be. We live
in Downtown Dallas so she sits in the window of our high-rise and overlooks the
skyline. Last week, she became very lethargic and on Friday, I became worried
so I took her to the emergency room. She's always been little, but playful and
happy until last week.

They did a Feline Leukemia test and it was positive. The only thing I had ever
heard about Feline Leukemia before Friday night was that all cats who get it -
die.

Cali is only 7 months old and I can't stop crying. I just moved to Dallas last
July. I have always had Dachshunds but I didn't think that dogs should be in
apartments, so I got Cali. Then I didn't want Cali to be by herself, so I got
another shelter kitty from the Petco in Bedford, (named Sasha) and she is very
healthy.

The emergency room vet and the Vet that I took Cali to have both told me that I
need to put Cali to sleep so that Sasha won't get sick and Cali won't get
better
so she should be put down. For all of you out there, please say a prayer for
me
and Cali. She is a Blue Cream Tabby, she weighs 5 pounds and she has been a
real fighter. I don't know how I will find the strength to put her to sleep.

She is so little. I want her to get better. I can't stop crying.

Instead of an enema, which cats (nor we) really appreciate, why not try some
fiber?
Have you tried sardines, mackerel, Boston Market chicken (if there's one
near you), smoked ham, thin slices of roast beef - all those things are
great for fussy eating cats (one of those things might just be it).

took BreAnne to vet yesterday.  chem screen all within normal limits.  on
CBC: lymphocytes were high.  vet said she definitely has leukemia.  WBC were
13.2;HCT was 32%; HgB of 9.9; RBC's 6.5  - - all within normal range.
platelets are low; neutrophils are low, and Ly (what is that) are high. he
said her hydration was good.  amoxicillin for 10 days and hope she pulls out
of it.  he said she had a lot of poop inside.  sent me home with an enema.
his diagnosis was alopecia and lymphadenopathy - - in her neck and behind
her knees.  and I know often the growths cannot be felt.

you encouraged me to hang with her.  continuing the supplements.

she seems like a lost little soul; eats a few bites and then leaves or
doesn't eat at all.  will eat in privacy but very, very particular.  took
the other cats to the country and have taken her out there a couple days.
she ran up a tree Friday morning.

Has your vet done a complete blood panel on her? You might be able to find
a clue to her problem. Also complete urine test would help. These will help
identify a problem. Since cats are so good at hiding illness, we sometimes
need to go to extemes. It costs, but may be less in the long runsince you
find out fast what is wrong and needs to be done.
As to food, I have found that Gerber's baby food (check first to be sure
there is on onion or garlic in it) is easier to feed and my girls have
responded to that. Also, add hot water to canned food. My girls and boy seem
to prefer the liquid to eating the meat. At least they get some nutrition.
Also, has your vet said anything about doing sub q fluids? I had to do that
with Lil Bit after I first got her. Se was stressed out, had a ragged coat,
no luster and had lost weight. After a little over 1 - 1/2 weeks, she
responded and has been fine since. Giving her fluids wasn't very hard. The
vet gave me a bag of fluids and needles and told me how to do it. The
heardest part was sticking her with the needle but I remimded myself I was
doing it for her benefit.
If she is stressed out, maybe keep her seperate from the others for a
while and give her lots of extra attention and loving to reassure her that
she is loved. Then reintroduce her to the others and see how it goes then.
These ae all tihngs I have done with my pride. Good luck!
