But Sherry, why don't you try to "educate" this vet about all the declawed
cats that end up dumped in kill shelters for litter box problems???
Or those cats that are just brought into vets to be "routinely" euthanized
for inappropriate urination??
My 2 Maine Coon boys each were brought in, on 2 separate occasions, 2
different owners, within one month of each other to be euthanized Peeing

Year+ later, they are both doing fine
Too damn big to be declawed...Each over 25 lbs.!! Whatever were
these people thinking??
Anyway, since you're volunteering there, maybe you can "talk" to this vet
about how inhumane declawing is.
You know, it is illegal in Europe, and even California is talking about
"outlawing" it.
It should be illegal.
It's just cruelty, plain simple.
And, Sherry, I know you are against it, I'm just having one of my

Ah, only a cat would have to put up with a choice
between amputation and being homeless.

www.catsinternational.org has excellent information on
how to train a cat. They've toned down their
article on declawing for some reason, but still make
some good points in it. Feline Future also has a good
article on declawing, without sounding hysterical.

I know it can cause litterbox problems and could change their personalities.I also know that she doesn't declaw after a certain age too.I think it should be outlawed too.But I can't just start telling her what's right and whats wrong. She knows what the outcome from the declawing could be.I will have to ask her why she declaws them all,but I believe it is like I said,it makes them more adoptable.(sad as that may be)I hate the claws too,but my first day with Rafferty I was clipping his nails.not all cats will let you do this.My Maizee was a beast when it came to it.Sorry that you all feel so angry about this issue, but I do still believe in her cause. Sad I know, believe me after I found out how declawing was done,I was appalled.a lot of these cats have came in already declawed, could have been very well because of it,who knows.I just try to love them and hope that thay are happy. And from what I have seen they are. Thanks for the link, might be helpful in educating people. I think
the declawing should be outlawed too. We really don't get that many
people who ask for declawed cats in Arkansas, but there are some and
we always screen for that.

We do too.
We had a "landmark" case here a few years ago.
When doing a routine vet check, we found that the applicant (who stated
very emphatically she would never declaw), had in fact
declawed the cat she had adopted from us 3 years prior!!
Her application for second cat was denied, and our lawyer did file suit for
breach of contract.

Fostering Fiv Cat

2006-01-01 Thread Sherry DeHaan
Hello everyone, well I finally decided to foster the cutest and sweetest Fiv boy named Rafferty. He must have just looked at me just right cause just this week something told me to take this boy home.So last night we got to my house 40 seconds before midnight.I do believe he likes being away from the other 75 cats.I also gave lots of loving to poor sweet Hardy,Jen the vet who runs it left us a note to love him while we have him.He purred so loud and sweetly,I hope he knows that we all love him so dearly.I believe she took him and Moses(really bad ear infection) and Marley(URI) to the clinic today.Keep them in your prayers. If you want to see my foster boy Rafferty,go to www.crashslanding.organd click on current residents and you can see all the beautiful furbabies. Sherry~
Hooray for both you and Rafferty..
I am sure you'll both give each other much happiness.
I also looked at all the darlings on the website...
I'm confused about something though. Is almost every cat there
de-clawed??? Because a vet runs the shelter?? Or is it an
error??
Just never saw so many de-clawed cats at one shelter.
Happy New Year!

Agree - what's with all these declawed cats? Does Michigan just go
for declaw?

I have on rare occasion talked to people, btw, who say that their vet
recommends declaw. (Probably also recommends just transferring $$$
to his/her bank account too).
