Re: Peanut/Special Needs List/Update
Thanks Belinda all of you for your support prayers. The vet called Peanut's liver values were all elevated. Her bilirubin white count were thru the roof. He thinks that cholangiohepatitis is the most likely culprit. I took her to the vet for 3 days of supportive care treatment (IV fluids, antibiotics, syringe feeding). I hated to do it...I don't want her to feel scared, but I felt it was her only chance. I really felt that she wouldn'thave survived the night if I had kept her here. It was really hard to leave, but I'm hoping this will turn her around. I had to go to work after that there were no phone calls from them since I dropped her off, so I'm considering that to be good news. They would have called me if she would have needed to be moved to a 24 hour vet for overnite care, so she was apparently medically stable enough to go the night there. Peanut/Special Needs List
Hi Belinda, Could you please add Peanut to the special needs list? She came to me 2 months ago with 2 of her companions, from a bad situation, she is now having issues with her liver. I am waiting on results of her bloodwork urinalysis. I have been syringe feeding her through the night, but she is very weak this morning. She stopped eating abruptly the night before last this crash come on like load of bricks. I am floored. She has jaundice her urine is a dark orangey yellow. I'm praying like crazy that we'll be able to turn this around with the force feedings. Depending on what the vet says, I may opt for a feeding tube. I'm pretty scared but trying to remain optimistic, since that's what Peanut needs from me right now I have read of cats recovering from liver issues. She's 18 years old I know they can't live forever, but I've only had her for 2 months I just want to have longer to show her that this world can be a decent place that she is loved before she moves on. But, then again, it never seems like it was long enough when the time comes. I just hope it isn't her time yet, selfish as that may sound. I am determined, though, to do whatever is best for her, to the best of my knowledge. Please keep my precious baby in your prayers. Thanks for listening. Yvonne Check out the new AOL. Re: Peanut/Special Needs List
Ask thevet for Denosyl, or look up the amount of SAMe in the Denosyl pills and get it from the health food store (it's the same thing, Denosyl is just how it is marketed through veterinarians). It helps with liver failure. Unless the liver failure is caused by cancer, the Denosyl should help. She may also need subcutaneous fluids. If the vet thinks it could be lymphoma in the liver and you do not do diagnostics and chemo, ask for a combo dexamethasone and depomedrol shot. When my Simon had liver failure from lymphoma and the chemo stopped working for a while, those shots brought his liver values almost to normal by shrinking the lymphoma. Thanks so much Michelle! I will ask. Peanut did have sub-q's yesterday. I was hoping that she would perk up, but she is very, very weak...she can barely change positions, but I'm not giving up. From what the assisted feeding list said, these cats can be very weak sick still recover, so I'm hanging in there with her. Thanks again. Yvonne
Re: Peanut/Special Needs List
Hi Yvonne, I hope it isn't hepatic lipidosis, the only thing that will reverse that is enough food. The liver is one of the organs that definitely can heal itself, but if she is jaundice from not eating enough then food, more importantly enough food is the only way to save her. Not saying this to scare you it is a fact and I've seen it enough to know it is very reversible, Buddie had this, hers was caught very early on and she was fine. Lots of prayers for Peanut. Make sure she is getting a can to a can and half of food a day if this is what she has. And yes it can strike in just a day or two if a cat quits eating, especially if the cat is overweight to start with. I'm adding her now, hope her blood work comes back with out any serious problems going on. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... RE: Peanut/Special Needs List
Yvonne, if Peanut does have hepatic lipidosis ("fatty liver") and she hates being force fed, the intubation might help a lot. It did with Luc, although the willful little sh*t got his appetite back about a week after we'd had it implanted! But for the time we used it, it took a lot of the stress of holding a struggling boykitty and squirting stuff into him out of the force-feeding process. The first couple times he just did a sort of surprised "Baroo?" look when he felt the sensation of stuff going down his esophagus that he hadn't personally eaten. The hardest part of the process was getting the watered-down A/D dissolved down fine enough not to clog the tube, which has a very small inner circumference. Not to mention that more than once our syringe clogged or locked on us. But once we got the suspension right, we abandoned the syringe almost entirely, and just put a small funnel in the tube and poured the A/D right out of the measuring cup. Also, when he started eating on his own, it still wasn't quite enough, so we would supplement with a tube feeding as well. The tube took some general keep-clean-change-wrapping maintenance but it didn't seem to bother him. We did have to wait a month after the implantation to get it removed again, so that the edges of the opening had a chance to knit themselves closed, but otherwise it was an easy procedure. The only thing was, it turns out Luc has problems with anesthesia, so the original intubation was more complicated and costly than it would otherwise have been, because he ended up spending a $600 night at the emergency vet's who had done the procedure. Re: Peanut/Special Needs List
We also turned Goliath around from liver failure... the vet said he was sending him home to die that there was nothing he could do. He said he was one of the worst cases he had seen (Goliath was almost completely yellow). We fed Goliath every 2 hours for almost 2 months... he got SamE (or the veterinary equiv. is Zentonil) and I SWEAR SWEAR SWEAR by that stuff... I have seen SamE (100mg - it's time release so you can't cut a larger size) completely cure liver failure. Pat Lamoretti is on this group... and Goliath is one of her rescues... so she can tell you he was almost feral... and now after coming back from near death is a big teddy bear... so don't give up... feed small amountsOFTEN... I fed baby food because he couldn't keep anything else down (make sure it has no garlic or onion powder) I mixed it with NutriCal to give more nutrients that he needed...and dosed SamE. I set my alarm to get up all through the night... and to this day the vet still is amazed that Goliath not only survived, but is thriving... There IS hope with the liver... RE: Peanut/Special Needs List
Wow, I will have to remember that in case, God forbid, this happens to one of my bunch again. Thanks! Diane R. I was hoping that she would perk up, but she is very, very weak...she can barely change positions, but I'm not giving up. From what the assisted feeding list said, these cats can be very weak sick still recover, so I'm hanging in there with her. Thanks again.Yvonne
