Re: OT-Anyone know of safe ways to deal w/ ants?
This reminded me that ants, after finding a good food source, will leave a scent for the other ants to follow, so it is important to clean the areas where you have seen ants, and find their trail, if possible. Just destroying the scented trail can be very helpful. Also, just finding the entry point and sealing (if possible) can be enough sometimes. Re: OT-Anyone know of safe ways to deal w/ ants?
The folks on the feral list I peek in on once in a while were just discussing ant deterrents. Some of the suggestions were: diatomaceous earth (the type for use with pets, not the swimming pool kind), ground cinnamon (sprinkled around doorways and windows to keep them outside, food dishes etc), boric acid mixed with yeast and/or sugar, (providing you keep it in places that the animals can't get into), and the most surprising one to me that was working for one lady was corn meal! Re: OT-Anyone know of safe ways to deal w/ ants?
They do not like mint, or eucalyptus oil. We got them to leave by putting both where they were going, and tracking them back to their nest in a wall and putting the oil around the edges of the hole and stuffing some mint in it. We did not want to kill the ants, or hurt anyone else, and it worked. If you have carpenter ants, it is good to try to find out where they are living in your house, though, because it generally indicates rotting wood that needs to be replaced. We found out we had a rotting beam because of the ants, which was a good thing. Michelle
