christie had some really interesting stuff to say about cats and changing
diets last night, and i've got to try to grab her and get more info--about
how cats, as a species, imprint on "food" and "not-food" when they're very
young, so it's much harder to switch them from one to another as adults.

the other book that christie recommends--and she flat-out REFUSED to give
any recipes last night, instead telling people where to go to find their own
information, as every cat's needs are different--is strombeck's

when the transcipt is available, i'll post it!

if you remember back when aol was starting out, their PetCareForum was set
up and staffed by the Veterinary Information Network (VIN) then when
aol went to a flat-rate service, rather than pay-per-hour plan, they dumped
a number of their more popular forums, so VIN took back their staff and
chats and message boards onto their own servers. they really weren't set up
to be a "consumer" site, tho, so after a year or so they decided to go back
to concentrating on their professional side.

so we put up a, "free to a good home," ad: trained, knowledgable staff of
chat hosts and message-board monitors. and the pethobbyist.com family
of sites took us in!

some of the hosts have been together for close to 15 years now; i'm a
newbie at only 7. christie keith, who did the cat-food chat last night, is
one of the folks who has been there all along, through AOL and VIN and now
pethobbyist.com. many of our chatters have also been regulars for 10 or
more years, so it truly is a family--very safe place, with LOTS of good
people and great information.

the main difference is the element of real-time--we have chats monday
through saturday that are either open for just fun, or on a topic, as well
as pet-loss-support chats EVERY NIGHT of the year, including holidays.
unlike a list, during scheduled chat times, you KNOW you'll find SOMEONE to
talk with! as hosts, we are trained to deal with problem people (usually
teenagers), and we have tools to mute people who are disruptive, as well as
those to kick them out and even ban them from the site if necessary.

Jenna --

Of all the disabilities for a cat to have, blindness is one of the least
worrisome, really, for the mommy. My housemate's old cat Kitty, 17+,
had CRF and one day had a blood pressure spike and just went blind. My
housemate was distraught because Kitty cried loudly for a couple of days
and Gail thought she was in pain. After some research, though, she
realized that Kitty was just using sonar to scope out her space in a new
way. After that she sort of followed the walls around, used her
whiskers to avoid crashing into stuff. At her age, she wasn't about to
do a bunch of jumping around anyway, but I believe some younger blind
cats actually do learn to jump up on stuff. Gail's old girl was always
able to find a sunbeam, at least. ;-)

Jenna,

First of all, I agree with everyone else-if you won't help this poor
soul, who will? I'm new to the rescue business and special needs cats,
but I'm finding so much support and help. I know there will be
heartbreak in my future, and I'm often crying when reading everyone's
experiences on here-but just know that you are part of an amazing group
of people who's hearts are so large and benevolent, that they can take
almost anything-I know you can too!

As for information, on another discussion board that I've just recently
joined (but not as focused as you all are on FeLV and special needs
kitties), I think there's a lady with two blind kitties-Cosmo and
Cooper. I'm not quite sure, but she has them as part of her signature.
Her user name is Laura IMOM and the web address is
http://www.imom.invisionzone.com/community/index.php?showforum=49

This website is for people seeking financial assistance for their
special needs animals. I just get advice here-so you don't have to be
asking for money. But, you might be eligible with the new baby. Here's
the link to a post with her name on it-it was one of my topics that she
responded too.
http://www.imom.invisionzone.com/community/index.php?showtopic=2554

I'll also post something for her and see if she responds. I can pass the
info on to you if you'd like...

Best wishes for you, and I hope you can take the poor thing-but you'll
know what to do and what is best for your situation. Just know that
there are many people who would support you emotionally if you decided
to take on this new kitty.

Melissa

Re: feline glaucoma--question for anyone with knowledge

2007-04-06 Thread Melissa Lind
Hi Jenna, I got a quick response to my post on the other website. Here's
what the lady I was talking about wrote (although she misunderstood the fact
that you are thinking of taking the cat, not giving it up, if I understand
correctly):

"There is absolutely no "issue" to blind cats..they are every bit as easy to
take care of as sighted cats are. I know many people are afraid of "dealing"
with a blind pet, but in all honesty there really is nothing to deal with.
The only things that I have to keep in mind with Cosmo, is that he can not
go outside (I don't believe in letting cats outside to roam anyway, all mine
are indoor only) and I try not to move furniture around much. He has always
found his litter box and navigates my house just like a sighted cat.

When your friend's cat has his other eye removed he should be fine, he
already knows the layout of his house, so he won't have to learn it like my
Cosmo did (and Cosmo learned my house remarkably fast). So there is no
reason she should even consider adopting him out...I really don't think
she'll notice much of a difference in him without the other eye.

Juli IMOM is Cooper's mom (the other kitty in my banner) , and I'm sure she
will post about blind kitties once she sees this thread.

When you have a chance go to the Cool Cats Chatter forum and read Cooper and
Cosmo's threads (they each have a thread there), you may direct your friend
there as well. She'll see that blind cats really are no different than
sighted cats, just a bit more special"

Here's the website to this post and then to the Cooper and Cosmo threads:

loving person!

Hi again Jenna. I should mention that I'm hoping to adopt a litle blind kitten
right now. If the only risk is that the glaucoma could spread to his other
eye, I wouldn't worry about that in the least! From what I've heard, blind
cats do just fine and will learn to navigate in no time.

I can understand your concern about the glaucoma affecting the rest of his
health and his life span. And only you cann know how much you can handle
(emotionally and financially). But if there's anything I've learned in the
last few months, it's that cats (and probably all animals) are far more LIKE
humans than they are different - even physiologically, emotionally, and
socially. I don't think I've ever heard of glaucoma in people affecting other
than vision, so I kind of doubt it would in cats either. But I don't know.
I'd keep asking around and as long as it's not going to mean he'll die shortly,
I'd definitely take him! Especially since he's calling to you. :)

Satine will be so proud of you for loving this little one! Good luck!

  MJ
