  Hi
I am novice in Scanning and Image Editing/Colour Correction (Using

I have little/confusing theoritical knowledge about RGB, gamma and

I am new to Photoshop too.I am thinking of buying a book which
 concentrates

 theory
  about RGB, gamma and colourspace.

The book has to be practical(with illustrations) and should give steps

I browsed in amazon.com and read the reviews about following books.
  Inside Photo Shop 6,
  Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers,

I'm not Robert (at least I don't think I am), but I *do* have this book
sitting fairly close to my work station. It's:

 ISBN 0-201-72199-6

published by Adobe Press in association with Peachpit Press, price:
$49.99(US), $74.95 in Canada. It was scheduled for release in June, but my
local library has it now. Yours might, too. :-)

 Best regards--LRA

Thank you. I'll have to check the library. Hate to put out $74.95 CDN plus
PST and GST and find out its not what I really want.

Do you know what's in the 'patch'?

 I really need it.

I haven't yet found anything myself that doesn't work in

The following are a list of fixes to 7.0.

 Fixes
? A display issue causing the Effects menu to remain on screen after use has
been resolved.
? When cropping an irregular selection area, the area outside of the
selection is now either filled with the current background solid color (when
performed on a background layer) or rendered transparent (when performed on
a raster layer).
? An issue that could cause an application error when using the Proof and
Auto Proof options in the Text Entry dialog on a background layer has been
resolved.
? The Rotate command operates correctly after moving a layer containing a
mask while in Mask Edit mode.
? The Histogram and Overview windows are properly updated after performing a
crop.
? When creating or resizing a crop marquee using the mouse, the ruler
operates in the same manner as the Selection tool by displaying the affected
area as a dashed line.
? Plug-in filters that have been properly removed from paths used by the
program will no longer be listed as available plug-in filters or file
import/export options.
? DPI information is correctly passed to file export plug-in filters
? The Sculpture and Texture effects correctly preview and apply rectangular
patterns.
? The ColorsAdjustHue/Saturation/Lightness command processes Lightness
value changes properly.
? The Page Curl effect will no longer leave white spots at the edge of the
curl.
? When using the Save, Save As, and Preview commands, the Image Mapper
properly processes vertical map boundaries when they do not extend across
the entire map grid.
? The Image Slicer will no longer generate an error when using the Grid tool
and clicking on an area outside of the document in the preview window.
? Information in the Target field is now retained when saving Image Slicer
settings.
? Vector objects are properly redrawn when they are on different layers and
their properties are collectively modified after being selected with the
Object Selector tool.
? Attempting to group existing vector object groups will no longer cause an
application error.
? Gradient fill colors are retained when changing vector object properties
when the current foreground or background solid colors differ from the
active colors at the time the object was created.
? Nested vector group names are properly retained.
? When pasting a new layer, a display problem that would cause a second
instance of the pasted data to temporarily appear has been corrected.
? Layer group values are retained when layer positions are modified using
the Layer Palette.
? The JPEG and GIF Wizards output properly when run with their default
options.
? When using the Save As command to save in JPEG format, designating a new
path and filename, then launching the JPEG optimizer, the new path and
filename are retained when the optimizer returns to the Save As dialog box.
? A problem that could prevent the browser from displaying thumbnails of
supported file types when the browser's cache file was read-only has been
corrected.
? Image size and memory information is no longer clipped off the right edge
of the Status Bar when running the program in a normal window at a screen
resolution of 800 x 600.
? When the position of the previewed area is changed using the
four-arrowhead button in affected program dialog boxes, the change is now
retained when using the Zoom In/Out controls.
? Rulers are now properly synchronized when images are viewed at negative
zoom levels.
? The brush and Scratch Remover tools now function properly after closing
some instances of the Page Setup or Multiple Image Printing views.
? 1- and 4-bit images are properly processed and previewed when used as a
pattern by program tools and effects.
? Several minor issues with using Undo to discard changes to vector content
and masks have been corrected.

 NORMAN CUSTOMER ALERT

 Date: March 14, 2001

Please be aware that a new mass mailing virus, W32/magistr@mm, alias
PE_Magistr.A, W32/Magistr.24876@mm, has been reported to be in the wild.
The
virus payload is very destructive, as it erases the hard disks(s) and
flashes
the computer?s BIOS, rendering the computer unable to start. At the
moment it
seems to be spreading relatively slowly, but it may develop into a major
risk
within the next couple of days.

This virus infects Win32 executables and will mass mail itself over email
by
direct SMTP. It will pick up email addresses from Microsoft Address book
and
 other files containing email addresses.

Because this virus is polymorphic, the subject, body and name of the
attachment
appear to be randomly created by the virus.

It will usually arrive in email as an EXE file with a random filename.

Until full detection is in place, we advise strongly NOT to open .exe
email
attachments with unknown content, even from a known sender.

If you execute an infected file, it will infect your system and the virus
will
start its mass mailing routine to propagate itself. It enumerates all
network
resources looking for folders with the following names:

 WIN 98
 WIN 95
 WINNT
 WINDOWS

If a folder with these names is found, it copies itself to these folders
and
adds an entry to Win.ini to load itself at the next system startup.

The virus contains the following encrypted text:

ARF! ARF! I GOT YOU!@ v1rus: Judges Disemboweler. By: The Judges
Disemboweler,
 written in Malmo (Sweden).

New signature files for version 4.8 are under development at this time. An
update that detects W32/Magistr will soon be published at our website,

the USB commands, and it looks like it will be quite easy to
add support for it to VueScan. It encapsulates SCSI

almost identical to the commands used by the LS-2000.

Yes - that's the same thing.

Interestingly, NikonScan 3.0 that came with this scanner
also works with my LS-30. The commands that these
scanners use are almost identical. NikonScan 3.0
with the LS-30 has the same limitations - 8-bits only.
It also doesn't enable DIgital GEM and Digital ROC

Also, I just got VueScan to come up and talk to the
LS-40, without changing any code. It doesn't scan yet,

Roger,

Without resampling QP and PS are pretty close, I think QP still does a
better job though. It is too bad that QP does not work with Mac as I'm sure
those that have a Mac would really like the program.

Dale

 Hi Dale,
Thanks for the tip, but I'm using a Mac G4. As it happens, I
don't resample for printing (sorry if I gave the wrong impression).
Along with Austin Franklin, I am also interested in how
Qimage makes prints far superior to Photoshop. I gather from your
first reply to Austin that it has to do with superior resampling
algorithms, so does it also give better prints if you don't resample?

 Regards,
 Roger Smith

Re: filmscanners: Re: File sizes, file formats, etc. for printing 8.5 x 11and 13 x 17...

2001-02-27 Thread Dale Gail

Roger,

If your OS is Win95/98/Me/2000 I suggest you try a program called Qimage
Pro. You don't have to resample for printing as the program does it for you.
The print results are far superior than PS or PSP. The program is very
inexpensive and the support is very good.

You can get a trial version at:
http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/imaging/index.html

Dale

 1. In my case, I always scan at the optical resolution of the
scanner (2720 ppi with my Canon FS 2710). This gives a file of about
26.5 Mb (assuming you are using an 8-bit file).
For printing I resize to the size I want in Photoshop's Image
Size ("Resample Image" unclicked) and let the resolution fall where
it may. There have been many discussions on the "ideal" image file
resolution for Epson printers, but the consensus seems to be
somewhere between 240 ppi and 360 ppi. My tests showed that there was
some improvement in going up from 240 to 300 to 360, but that there
was no degradation of the print using odd resolutions such as 347 ppi
or 353.753 ppi. Some people have claimed that using odd values for
resolution affects the quality of their prints, but I haven't found
 that to be the case.

Re: filmscanners: Re: File sizes, file formats, etc. for printing 8.5 x 11and 13 x 17...

2001-02-27 Thread Dale Gail

From my experience I find the prints are far superior than what PS produces.
You have full color management (ICC) support. The algorithms used in QP are
better than the resampling in PS. In PS or PSP you have to manually resample
prior to printing. In QP when setup the don't have to resample , if required
it is done by QP. You have a choice of 7 different types of interpolation to
choose from. The default is Lanczos, and if you take the time to try the
program you will find it to be better than the algorithm used in PS. For
$30.00 you might say it can't be much of a program at that price, it is well
worth much more. Many Pro Photographers who used PS for printing now use QP.
There are close to 900 people on the e-list and many are Pro Photographers.
Since getting QP I very seldom use PS and never use it for printing.

What, exactly, do you mean by "The print results are far superior"? What
is
the workflow you are claiming this is true for?

If you are claiming this is true when your resultant resolution falls
below,
say, 240...and you need to resample I could believe it is better than the
PS
resampling algorithms...but I'm not quite clear what claim you are making
 here...

 What's new in version 6.7

   * Improved cleaning, both with and without infrared

   * Added warning message when error writing files
 or when disk is full

   * Added warning message when insuffient memory available

   * Decreased ScanWit scan time by simultaneously returning
film holder to home position and processing scan data

   * Fixed ScanWit problem with manual focus prior to scan

   * VueScan now runs on a Mac with no SCSI adapter
 (only scans from disk files)

 Hi Ed,

The key insight came when I learned about Sigma filters. I was
amazed at how well the final algorithm worked. I can probably
tweak it some more, but it works quite well now. I'd recommend
using the "Clean" setting instead of "Scrub" or "Scour" since
it seems to work well and is quite fast.

Does that image cleaning stuff work with scanners without an IR channel?

Lynda,

The following may help with batch scanning from the negative strip.

"You select each thumbnail image and set your adjustments for each image as
needed just as you normally would. Then, in a windows environment, do a
control left click on each thumbnail image in the thumbnail tray. All the
thumbnail images are then selected. When you click the scan button, the
software asks you where to save the images and gives you a window to select
file type and a name."

I hope this helps.

 Jonathan,
The scheduled release for the SS120 is mid Janurary. The actual release
should be 1/15 through 2/15 depending on how fast we can tie up all the
loose ends. The MSRP will be $3995 with an expected street price of around
$3500. I am sure they will be on allocation initially so the initial
street
 price will probably be higher.

Hi Daryl,

I would appreciate itvery much if you had a few
sample slide scans, type of shot could be landscapes, people, street scenes and
of course in color. I have slides dating back to 1960 which I want to scan to
CD. A comparison scan using the default settings in both the Minolta software
and VueScan would be a bonus. I have the SCSI model of the HP PhotoSmart which I
use with VueScan. I like ViewScan however I have nothing but bad luck with the
PhotoSmart. It has been replaced three times.

I have been very happy with mine, but I use VueScan. I
scan mostly slides (Kodachrome and Provia). It has some troubles with
certain Velvia images, as most CCD scanners seem to.
I wish I had a Q-60 to scan on it, but I may be able to come
up with some other things to scan for you if you give me an idea of what you
might like to see (trannies or negs, type of shot, color or bw
  etc.).
Again, overall I'm very pleased. It outperforms all
other in it's price range in my opinion and for my purposes. And VueScan
is the greatest piece of software ever. ;)

I've got a problem with scanning at higher bits with Vuescan on my Canon
 FS2710.

I am sure that in the past, when I have scanned slides, I have done so at
48
bit and then ended up with a Tiff file which is 36 bit in PS (maximum bit
 depth on the scanner).

Now, when I scan, even set at 48bit in vuescan, all I get is a 24 bit
file.

Surely I must be able to get at least a 36 bit file?
