Re: [Finale] measure numbers and upbeats
Nonetheless, that upbeat measure should not have it's own number. I don't know what kind of piece you are doing, but musically the correct way to notate this is to have _two_ incomplete measures, ie (in 4/4) a measure with 3 quarters and one with one quarter, and both are in fact the same measure (and get the same measure number). If your source does not give you this option the upbeat measure should still not get it's own number imo. Depending on the circumstances you could consider to start new measure numbers, which would make the upbeat measure 0 (or -1). Johannes d. collins wrote: I know we discussed something similar recently, but what does one when, in the middle of a piece, a new section starts with an upbeat and an incomplete measure? Re: [Finale] scanning typeset scores
I am a PC/WinXP/Finale 2005a user. Buried somewhere in the documentation is the comment that not all scanners generate a SmartScan compatible file. This also directs the reader to their scanner documentation for help (UGH!). For years I had given up on using SmartScan because I always got an error message telling me that the source .tif document was unrecognizable. The work around I mentioned came to me in a serendipitous moment this past summer. Re: [Finale] New USB midi keyboard
Ken, Simple Entry allows the addition of dynamic markings and articulations with meta tools at the same time as you are entering notes. I am not used to this method and have the usual reluctance to change long standing habits, but the Finale folks who demonstrate the software (I see them yearly at a convention) use Simple Entry with a midi keyboard, and they are very fast with this method. They have adapted to the newer method and claim it is better. they are probably right. The instructions are in chapter 15 of the on line documentation. [Finale] measure selecting tip
This may be old news to many Finale users, but I thought it was a neat way to select measures for editing. I'm working on a score that has over 40 staves. (Most of the time I can't see all of my measures at one time on one page.) I wanted to break all of the barlines in only 1 measure (using a staff style) so that I could put a fermata over the bar line without interference from the barline between many of the staves. The Mass Mover tool lets you select a whole stack of measures simply by double-clicking on a measure. (Quadruple clicking, if you have select partial measures on.) If you switch to the Staff Tool while the measures are now selected, you can apply a staff style. Done! Double-clicking in the Staff Tool doesn't give you the same results--it just opens up an editing dialog for the measures you already have selected. There are many ways to get these same results, but this is the quickest. You can use Mass Mover to select measures and then switch to the Midi Tool, Clef Tool, Stave Tool (and others) to edit. This feature may have been around since Finale 2003, but today was the first time I tried it on a stack of measures and I thought that was cool. -Randolph Peters ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Textblocks on invisable pages
I am extracting parts on a 31 page score. On several pages of the score I have title text blocks, which, due to less pages in the parts, appear nowhere in the parts. I can find the text blocks via the Edit Text command in the in the text menu, but contrary to what I thought it is not possible to edit the frame attributes for those text blocks. Is there any way I can get those text blocks to appear on visable pages? Ie, move a text block which appears on page 25 in the score, to appear on page 5 of the 11 page part? Actually, how Finale's spacing does it depends on the layer assignments. If the quarter notes are in layer 1 and the whole note is in layer 2 it will do the former. Basically, Finale will always push the higher-layer-numbered note to the right and calculate beat spacing based on the lower-layer-numbered note. What to you think is best? In your case, I prefer the first choice. More generally, I usually prefer the more active line to have uniform spacing and let the less busy one be pushed aside. More generally still, I will consider any such situtation individually and use my personal esthetic judgment to choose what I consider most readable and most attractive. Some ideas I may not have time to test for a couple of days: 1) if you add pages by adding them at the end using the menu option in the page layout menu, text blocks assigned to a later page may show up, where they may not if you add the pages by inserting them. 2) if you add pages by selecting speedy entry, placing the cursor on the last measure, and create measures by using the right arrow key, and create enough measures to force the necessary number of pages, you may be able to get the blocks show up on their original page. ns ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Of course I've checked Mic Level, Quantization, Transposition etc. With HyperScribe the pitches come out approximately, and the rhythms NOT EVEN close. I.e. with Metronome Sound through my earphones, coming from the my Powerbook, I can't get simple quarter notes, tongued or legato. Otherwese, Hyperscribe works fine, when I play Midi Keyboard.
