I appreciate Mac's filename flexibility. I'm not aware of any

Y'know, this is a bug often seen on applications which are multi-
platform. I haven't seen one with Mac-only application yet. If the
developer took OSX NAVServ API, it escapes forward slash. When I used
to work for Windows, we had a big issue with trailing back slashes which
is a part of quite a few Japanese characters. Imagine that mess :-(

I never did see Heracles, but I went to several dress rehearsals for Danton

vehicle that Eaton had written for his wife, Nelda Nelson. Some intriguing
theatrics, and a lot of music that that engendered a lot of references to
naked emperors while failing to live up to it's composer's programmatic
claims. (I am unapologetically a major believer in letting music speak for
itself rather than telling audiences how they are supposed to feel about
it.)

And from all the IU composition faculty at the time (late '70's), Bernhard
Heiden was the only one with a memorable sense of humor, flying in the face
of stereotypes about age and nationality. I'll never forget how, on the
first day of counterpoint class, he remarked that "sequences are the
Hamburger Helper of modern music," how later on he told one student "you did
this [assignment] like you did your income tax--you tried to get away with
as much as possible," and also, at a composers' symposium à propos of the
premiere of Eaton's "Danton & Robespierre," how "writing an opera [as
opposed to chamber music and other small-scale projects] is the sprit of
Evel Knievel" [sp?].

I recommended trying to "Compress PDF" instead of "Save to PDF..."
Now I know why my suggestion worked (in a round-about way).

"Compress PDF" is an Applescript and it prompts you to name the saved
file by presenting a blank field. Chances are that you won't fill in
the name with a "/" because of good computer sense. The "Save to

cause problems.

There is nothing on the list. I tried this with a blank file. If the
graphic is embedded and later deleted, it still is in the file somewhere --
in other words, if I embed a 4MB photograph, the file grows by 4MB as
expected. But deleting the graphic doesn't seem to get rid of it -- even
when I *really* meant to link to the file, and go back to make the change.

In other words, if I go through the score and delete the embedded images
that I forgot to link, they don't go away. If I delete *all* graphics,
they're not in the "Check All Graphics" list. That's now empty -- but the
graphics are still in the file, even after saving, after Data Check (Data
Check doesn't have those elements on the list anyway), and after leaving
Finale and reopening the file. The file is still big (in this case, nearly
90MB), and has no graphics available.

Do you see this?

If we could still save to ETF, I could just grab the graphics block and
delete it. But it's all binary now. :(

And I'm also not able to compile a Postscript listing with the graphics
included. Mac users don't have to do this, but to get a nice-looking PDF
(on screen), the compile feature does it, but the print feature doesn't
give a nice display (and I've tried it with Distiller, PDF995, docPrint
Pro, etc.).

Many of my scores have photographs embedded as part of the performer
guidelines. In my 25 Landscape Preludes for piano, the pianist interprets
the dynamics by means of a graph derived from the photograph, and the photo
is also on the page.

In scores with electronics, the graphical score is also part of the entire
score. In two pieces for MalletKat and playback, the entire sequencer score
is shown in parallel with the dot-music score.

In a recent set (the one giving me so much trouble), it is a commission for
12 performance pieces for tenor guitar.

I can think of several more complicated things, but for starters, when I
have a part with a RH page left blank to facilitate page turns, I place
a graphic of an arrow at the bottom of that page to indicate that the

[Finale] Removing embedded graphics

2007-05-19 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

I'm sending this again. My requests about graphics here seem to vanish.
There must be *somebody* who works with graphics in Finale! :)

Anyway, to say again:

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if there is a tool I'm missing.

As I've been working on a score, I occasionally have forgotten to check
"link to file" when importing graphics. I would delete the graphic and
re-do it with "link to file" checked. I noticed that the saves were getting
slow, and then found that the file had grown to over 80MB -- the embedded
graphics (all photos) were not being removed. Doing a data check doesn't
help. Saving and re-opening the file and/or Finale doesn't help.

Is there a tool to remove these residual embedded graphics? I hadn't
noticed this before, but I do see that each piece created from the previous
carries forward these deleted graphics that appear to be embedded -- since
the compositions are based upon each other, I need to move them forward
from the previous one.

I tested a new file, imported a graphic, and then deleted it, and did a
data check to remove deleted items. The graphics are not removed, and the
file always grows to the size of the embedded graphics -- even if they're
otherwise completely deleted. Nothing can get rid of these for me.

Any help on this? Or someone who can confirm this behavior?

(Also, an earlier email that got no responses: Compile Postscript Listing
-- which produces the best-looking results -- seems to leave out the
graphics. Anyone else see that?)

Many thanks,
Dennis
