2016-02-17 Thread Lee Actor
My setup is MIDI keyboard to my left, perpendicular to the computer keyboard
and monitor. Left hand on the MIDI keyboard, right hand on the number
keypad makes for very fast note entry. As the MIDI keyboard is full-size 88
keys, I can instantly enter any note in any octave, plus of course when
there are multiple notes entered on the same beat it is done in a single
step. To each his own, but I'm very fast using my method and like it a lot.

After using Finale for over 25 years and trying out all methods of note
entry,
I can say without any doubt that David's method is the fastest and, once you
become practised at it, the most accurate.

Left hand on the up/down arrows for the pitch and right hand on the number
pad keys for the durations. When copying sheet music I now only need to
glance at the screen every once in a while and never at my fingers - I can
keep my eyes firmly on the original music for long periods and this makes
it very fast indeed. There are many keyboard shortcuts and you can set up
metatools to make things even faster. Taking my hand away to use a MIDI
keyboard would really slow me down, as does using the mouse.

Don't be tempted into thinking that scanning music or using Hyperscribe will
speed things up, it doesn't. It ends up as a mess which you have to spend
even more time cleaning up.

Here's where I differ from David and agree with Mike G. It takes a long,
long time fiddling with all the settings and making expression and
articulation
libraries etc, before you get them the way you want. A blank template file
stores them all, instantly ready for the next project. I do have one
template
in a particular style for a publisher, but mostly I use my own "house
style".

2016-02-17 Thread Girard Bowe
That's funny - I use Speedy also, but I select the value on the QWERTY, then
press the pitch on the midi. Maybe you're not using a midi keyboard? So for
me, it's note value first, then pitch. However, "pitch first" is great for
banjos!

I've gotten to be pretty adept at using 2 keyboards. I also have several
templates set up for different projects. The main ones are jazz/funk band
arrangements (2-5 horns + rhythm), jazz solo transcriptions, and a legit
template.

Linked parts has been a huge time-saver for me - so much better for my
purposes than part extraction.

There are no plug-ins for entering notes that I'm aware of, but there are
number which are very useful once you've entered notes. I seem to use the JW
Plugins every session.

Totally agree. The only difference for me is that I use Speedy with my
computer keyboard as a 3-octave keyboard (z-m, a-j, q-u) to select the
pitch, rather than arrow keys. Very quick and efficient, and one of the
main reasons I haven't been tempted by other notation apps.

2016-02-17 Thread John Roberts
I think many of the people who have used Finale or a while use Speedy,
with or without a midi keyboard (in my case it's with). It used to be
Make Music's recommended method, and that's what we got used to and
developed the habits. Latterly it would seem that Simple entry has been
improved considerably, but those of who learned with Speedy and have got
use to it are unlikely to change.

Try both, and see what works for you. You might find Simple more
intuitive. I'm sticking to Speedy.

I use speedy entry -- sometimes with a midi keyboard but more frequently
using the computer's keyboard. Arrow keys up and down to select the
pitch, number keys to select the rhythm. If you switch between using a
midi keyboard and not using a midi keyboard to enter the music using
Speedy Entry be sure that the toggle Use Midi Device for input is
unchecked if you're using only the computer's keyboard or all you'll get
are rests.

I don't usually use templates, preferring to set each new document up
precisely for that particular project. But then I don't usually work on
projects which have to be "just so" for a particular publisher.

I don't find plug-ins to be helpful for entering the notation -- they're
great for things after the initial music entry but I find they get in
the way when I'm in the music entry phase of a project.
