Yes, the bass flute works (no double barlines here, though; probably in the preferences somewhere), but the contrabass flute apparently doesn't exist except as a name in the list. > So there's clearly a problem with the instrument definition list, but > when I opened it (using a program which can display both hexadecimal and > ascii) I see no way to change the entry for contrabass flute to make it > work properly. Don't know where this list is. Is this the SQLite database file that jef mentioned? Finale.instruments or GIFF.Soundmap? One more list. It used to be an extensive XML file. I edited it to add an alto flute back when there wasn't one available. It required creating a custom soundfont (sfz) file for the instrument (I have an soundfont editor, and based it on a standard flute). Now it's GIFFinstruments.txt (user settings) combined with Instruments for Finale.bank.xml (in the Garritan program entry) and probably other things. Since every Finale version recreates this file, it's a pain to find and edit these by hand. > thought of the day -- we have it backwards: there are not finale > workarounds, but rather finale IS a workaround for our notational > needs. :P Yes. somewhere deep within your computer there is a database with instruments that can only be edited -- as i recall -- with a programme that can write/read mysql... or something like that. i don't recommend it, but have edited it in the past for my own needs. >So there's clearly a problem with the instrument definition list, >but when I opened it (using a program which can display both >hexadecimal and ascii) I see no way to change the entry for >contrabass flute to make it work properly. thought of the day -- we have it backwards: there are not finale workarounds, but rather finale IS a workaround for our notational needs. :P >So my suggestion is for you to make the music appear as you wish >(use bass flute since the program can work with that) and if >playback is important then export it as midi file to open in a >sequencer and then edit the midi data for that section so that the >contrabass will play back (if you have a sound library which >actually has a contrabass flute patch) with the correct sound at the >correct pitch. -- neueweise -- fonts for new music (and traditional) notation [JAN 2016] v. 1.002 for Finale 2014.5 and PC http://newmusicnotation.com/fonts.html shirling & neueweise | http://newmusicnotation.com new music notation + arts management + translation [FB] http://facebook.com/neueweise | [TW] http://twitter.com/neueweise ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu

I just ran an experiment -- started with a full orchestra score, then for a few measures in the contrabassoon part I tried a change to contrabass flute -- no change appeared whatsoever. But when I tried a change to bass flute the double barliness appeared (don't know why an instrument change in one part should trigger double barlines for the whole score) and the clef changed to treble clef just as it should. So there's clearly a problem with the instrument definition list, but when I opened it (using a program which can display both hexadecimal and ascii) I see no way to change the entry for contrabass flute to make it work properly. So my suggestion is for you to make the music appear as you wish (use bass flute since the program can work with that) and if playback is important then export it as midi file to open in a sequencer and then edit the midi data for that section so that the contrabass will play back (if you have a sound library which actually has a contrabass flute patch) with the correct sound at the correct pitch. -- David H.
