Re: [Finale] 3/2 vs. 6/4

2016-12-07 Thread Allen Fisher
I agree with Darcy. When reading the score I'd much rather see 6/4. The shift
to 3/2 causes me to have to think a bit more.

I did an arrangement several years ago where the quarter note stayed constant
but had lots of meter changes (it was approximating some chant and I wanted to
use downbeats to line up word stresses). It was much easier to read putting it
in all x/4

way of drugs for it, due to other side-effects from the fall), and I
am able to do much more work than I could a year ago, but I still find
myself at the mercy if others.I am asking, again, for engraving help.

I made this request before, in 2014, and the result was amazing. I
got help literally all around the world, from these listers:

 Dick Hauser (Washington State, US)
 Allen Fisher (Minnesota, US)
 Jim Williams (Indianapolis, IN, US)
 Richard Huggins (Tyler, TX, US)

And, especially, HUGE amounts of help from:

 Jón Kristinn Cortez (Reykjavík, Iceland)
 Bruce Kau (Hawaii, US)

Jon and Bruce have already helped a great deal on the new project, but
they have, uhh, LIVES and can't do it all.

As many of you know (I know how it is, you remember details about some
people, but not all, on a list like this) I had a stroke at age 60 in
October 2013, and followed that up with a bad fall on stairs in Feb
2014 which injured the base of my spine (be careful going down stairs
 - three members of my family are dealing with life-changing injuries
from a fall down stairs!). I can't sit for hours at a time like I did
for YEARS, happily typing away in Finale.

(I am typing this on my laptop, standing, but my Finale chops on it
are dismal, and the laptop is way too slow. I've tried
standing-desktop setups and they don't work for me.)

Meanwhile, I am in the middle of a big project, a grant (small, but
encouraging) to orchestrate the 'Music Play' Franklin's French
Affair by the late, Pulitzer-awarded composer Ernst Bacon. I am
working actively with the composer's widow, Ellen, to finish the work
that Mr. Bacon's failing eyesight would not allow.

I could really use some help! When I was healthy, I enjoyed nothing
more than sitting and making quick arrangements in Finale - did them
all the time for others, even strangers on the internet, and I am
thinking there are users like me out there who are still healthy and
wouldn't mind taking a few minutes now and then to pound out a file or
 two for me. Yes?

I only need help with STEP ONE: to take pdfs of Mr Bacon's piano-vocal
MS (quite legible) and input them into Finale - any version. There
are about 40 separate songs, some one page, some longer. I have #1 -
9 orchestrated already, and Bruce is finishing #10 as we speak. (It's
quite nice music - which helps!)

Many of you are pros, and have deadlines of your own, but some of you
may be able to share some work. No money to offer - I am getting a
little for the finished product, but not enough to spread around,
 unfortunately.

If anyone is with me so far, a message with I'll do one or I'll do
all I can or whatever is all I need to shoot some pdfs your way.

 Thanks for any help!

Re: [Finale] Finale 2014: Looking back, looking forward

2014-07-31 Thread Allen Fisher
Spotlight hooks into the OS's search system. Depending on what you implement in
your exporter, you can search on things like clef, key, time, composer,
etcetera. IIRC you could search for instruments in a document. Really is handy
when you have a lot of files and need to find a subset quickly.

The other thing QuickLook gives you is a view of your files in the Cover Flow
view in Finder windows.

I used these things a lot and it's a huge bummer they are on hiatus.

Or for something like a quick check through a folder of orchestral parts. Not
having quicklook would be like having no Return key. Of course you can still
get stuff done, but not efficiently.

I could see that could be useful, but that hasn't been a deal breaker
for me, as I've never had that capability in the first place. It sounds
like the good news is that because of the new future-oriented file
system, once those tools are working, they should continue to work on
future releases with minimal or no development work, and that means
development resources could be put against other problems.

This is the frustration of doing a major architectural upgrade to a
rather old codebase. Users get the impression that there are few
benefits for such a long wait. But the benefits are there -- they are
just realized over a longer time horizon.

Re: [Finale] SFA - composer with issues asking for volunteer help

2014-07-13 Thread Allen Fisher
Hi Raymond--

I'd be happy to help. I could bang out the first one there for you. What
version of Finale do you want it in (I've got one or two laying around from my
17 years of use ;) )

Sent from my iPhone

On Jul 13, 2014, at 6:06 PM, Raymond Horton horton.raym...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi listers,

As many of you know (I know how it is, you remember details about some
people, but not all, on a list like this) I had a stroke at age 60
last October, and followed that up with a bad fall on stairs in Feb
which injured the base of my spine (be careful going down stairs - 3
in my family are dealing with injuries from a fall down stairs!). I
can only sit for a few minutes at a time without taking addictive
pain-killers and have worked for years, and gotten pretty good fin
chops (though now I have to learn 2014 quickly) sitting.

Plus, as I have mentioned in the last few days, I have had
major-league computer issues with my super-wiz-bang HP Windows 8
machine. I am typing this on my laptop, standing, but my Finale chops
 on it are dismal.

Meanwhile, I am in the middle of a deadline, and even though I have an
extension I simply must get this work done -choir needs most of it's
music by the last week of July. It is quite adventurous, involving
research, narration, and PowerPoint. I have had good luck with some
great ladies at my church who are helping - typing my dictation and
doing the PowerPoint which I am a novice at.

My point, and I do have one (thanks for reading this far) is that I
could really use some help! When I was healthy, I enjoyed nothing
more than sitting and making quick arrangements in Finale - did them
all the time for others, even strangers on the interwebs, and I am
thinking there are users like me out there who are still healthy and
wouldn't mind taking a few minutes now and then to pound out a file or
 two for me. Yes?

I know that I could have done some of these chores during the time
taken to write this message, (esp how bad a typist I am on this
laptop) but I am hoping that the detail will draw some people in to
sharing some of your skills with me, and interested folks won't need
the whole story with every request.

I will list some things in this message, and will add more in the
coming weeks. The project is called Searching For America and tells
the story of K.L. Bates writing America the Beautiful in 1893 - for
singer actors, chorus, and chamber orch (strings, 2 fls, 2 trpts, 3
perc.). I am making big-time use of folk songs and other existing
material, such as old sheet-music of obscure tunes that don't have
midi files anywhere (I use found midi files a lot in this sort of
thing, but I don't even have the time to spend much time at that now).
My plan is to give mostly straight-forward arrangements to the
choir, and contribute more originality to the instrumental and
narration portions before the prmire in November.

Many of you are pros, and have deadlines of your own, but some of you
may be able to share some work. No money to offer - I am getting a
little for the finished product, but not enough.

If anyone is with me so far, here are my first needs. Any Fin file will do:

 1. Type out these songs:
 http://www.loc.gov/item/sm1871.02334/

My wife has already typed the words to the latter - I'll include that
 in my next email.

 2. same for some pdfs I can attach to private emails. simple stuff.

 3. A fin file, as simply scored as possible, of the Sousa arrangement
of The Star-Spangled Banner - midi files may be around for that.

A message with I'll do 1 or whatever to the list will help avoid dupes.

More later! Thanks for any help!

I think there's a way to auto-annotate fonts that I think was introduced in
2012. I don't have Finale in front of me, but I remember only having to tweak

I use the FP versions of the fonts, and they work well, although I had to

been a result of not importing earlier FAN files correctly - never sure how I
am doing with things like this, but the fonts are working as expected now.
There are some I have come to prefer so strongly over the alternatives that I
would be unhappy without them - the soft chord slashes and rhythmic notation
 being the most important.

 All the best,

If anyone who has this working well responds, perhaps it would be helpful if

It's also very important to make sure the fonts are included in Finale's

I would think so... Finale doesn't control what program opens what... That's in
the operating system. Finale will recommend itself to the OS, but the fact that
the Finder is reverting suggests something else may be wrong.

I suspect your launch services database might be borked. I think MM has a KB

If you resize a note, anything attached to it gets resized, so that means

There's nothing ignorant about it. Y'ever been out west? Regional

 John,

I disagree. RO-dee-oh is an American pronunciation of a Spanish (Mexican)
word. There are many examples of such borrowed words that are not commonly
pronounced as they would be in Mexico or Spain: Animas as in the Animas
River; Santa Fe, Santa Rosa, Amarillo, Lamesa, Tucumcari, chile (chili) etc.

As do the feminine alumna and the plural alumni, which are still
universally used and understood. Syllabi is commonly used in the
academy, although it ALMOST seems pretentious.

And then there are those pesky words that seem to be in the middle of
their transition: data (always plural) and datum (singular); and
even worse, media (always plural) and medium (singular).

For some borrowed and assimilated words singers have to make choices
(unless a composer has made it perfectly clear): ro-DEH-oh (Spanish)
 or RO-dee-oh (ignorant American!).

I've looked into the dedicated Freehand MusicPadPro but am also considering
the iPad. The good thing about the Freehand is the screen size, but the
relatively tiny memory would mean a lot of switching files in and out, and
it's not good for anything else. Plus I've read some discouraging comments
online about where the company is heading, so I'm a bit reluctant to purchase
something where the company might be gone in a year or two. If anybody is
using one of these, please comment on it.

I do know of several music reading apps for the iPad -- MusicReader needs a
PC or Mac to convert the PDF files into native file format but there's a free
iPad app to read the files on the iPad. I've purchased the Windows version
and am very impressed with the capabilities. The other one I've found,
ForScore, will work directly with PDF files of the music but otherwise seems
a bit less capable than MusicReader. I would welcome comments from anybody
using either or both of these.

Is the iPad screen really too small, assuming one has good eyesight (or
correctable to 20/20 with glasses) or is it manageable?

Thanks for any/all comments about either device as a replacement for paper

The answer depends on the source from which the PDF is going to be
 created.

For instance, if your friend has Office 2007 or 2010, PDF output is
included (though with early releases of 2007, you had to download it
 and install it).

I have used PDF995 for years, and also use PDFCreator (though the
latter I use because I can programatically control it from VBA in my
Access database applications -- it also works as a standard PDF
 printer, though).

I don't know if either of those options have any compatibility issues
with versions of Windows after WinXP, or if they run on 64-bit
 Windows.

On my 64-bit Win7 machine I use a program called doPDF which is freeware
and can be downloaded from http://www.dopdf.com/ -- on the PC, with such a
program, it installs as a printer-driver which Ryan's friend would choose as
the printer from whichever program he's trying to create PDF output from. I
realize most PC users would understand that, but I thought I would include it
for Ryan's sake, since he's on a Mac.

doPDF allows you to select the folder to save the PDF file into.

But I don't know anything at all, working with VNC every day to do

Re: [Finale] piano-vocal template?

2010-04-17 Thread Allen Fisher
You can make a document style or styles with your libraries and settings loaded
then use them with the setup wizard. No bloat required.

On 17 Apr, 2010, at 9:26 AM, Noel Stoutenburg wrote:

I haven't used the set-up wizard in years, as it adds a significant quantity
of bloat to a file, in the form of items (articulations, expressions, chord
symbols, c) that are not going to be used in my work. Instead, I have built
a set of custom libraries, and templates and load just what I need. A Piano /
Violin score, and a Piano / Vocal score both start from the same base
template, to which I add the necessary supplemental custom custom shape and
character libraries I need. Thus, if you compare the expression lists, you
will see the expressions con sord and pizz. and arco in the Violin
composition, but not in the vocal one, and the expression with closed lips
in the vocal one, but not the violin one.

Use the setup wizard... I use it all the time as the starting point for
templates and starting with 2009, when you open a template, you get the two
pages of the setup wizard that let you do clef/key/time and title/composer/etc.

the files I originally made in some ancient version, I want to start with
fresh files created in v 2010, so that my files won't have legacy code hiding

I figured I'd start with one of MakeMusic's templates and then edit it to
match all my preferred settings, but when I do New Document as Template, I
don't see a piano-vocal template anywhere on the list. Is it really true

Re: [Finale] F2007 printing Glitch

2009-12-04 Thread Allen Fisher

Hi Dick--

Try turning off Smart Hyphens and Word Extensions in lyric options. I
think it might be an errant word extension.

I loaded the original file and created a ~.ps file. I dragged that
into my word processor (Pages on the Mac) and got a 300+ page of
printer instructions that I'm overwhelmed by. It's a repeating
general pattern of pages where we have about ten pages of stuff like
this:

**
Those two different kinds of patters repeat a bunch of times till we
get to the end of the 320 or so pages.

I know some of you could make sense of what was going on there, but
honestly, I don't think I have the skills to understand an
explanation, much less try solutions at this level.

However, when I double click on the post script file, it is opened
by the Mac app Preview. And sure enough, the line is there.

So it looks like I've imbedded some character that draws a line at
that point. Best solution is probably to re create the file.

I don't have time (as I just said in a previous post) to redo the
whole file today, but I'm convinced that it's the only way that I'll
get a clean print.

Thanks all for your time.

You've gotten good replies already -- here's my suggestion:

1) enter the music in page view only;
2) calculate just which measures you want on each set of facing pages;
3) enter the music for each page just as you wish it to appear
(forget about playback of anything more than a single page of a
single part);
4) create two different page headers, one for the Secondo Part and
one for the Primo Part, each set to appear only on left page or
right page accordingly;

5) Set the measure number regions, one for each page;

This should allow you to end up with a single Finale file which will
print just as you wish without the bother of having to go to PDFs
and interlacing the pages to get the proper printout.

If I've omitted any important step, I'm certain someone will point
that out. :-)

Re: [Finale] importing Score files into Finale

2009-04-25 Thread Allen Fisher
I recommend either scanning or entering from scratch, having not seen
the score, I would probably reenter it. Score is really frustrating to
get installed (it is a DOS program) much less learn for one project;
there's not much demand for it these days

On Apr 25, 2009, at 6:45 AM, dhbailey wrote:

anyone tried inputting Score files into Finale? Was
there much editing to do? In the import menu, Score is
listed.
I was given very old Score files which of course did not
open in Finale and had .ham as the suffix. Which would
likely be best for that portion of the score already
input? The score can be printed as is but needs to be
input to create parts. The other two thirds of the score
of course I was going to input into Finale. Or should I
learn Score? I'm great at learning programs quickly but
would think that Score wouldn't hold a candle to Finale
and this is a complex classical full orchestra score.
I can try and get a hold of the Score files, and/or scan
those score pages already complete into Finale using
SmartScore X Pro (although my scanner is letter size and
the score pages are tabloid - so I'd have to either
reduce them or scan in 2 parts), and/or I could purchase
Score and learn the program. I thought that Score was
discontinued long ago but found one site on the web where
a new version of Score 5 is sold. I think importing the
Score files would be fastest and the best choice if they
come across pretty clean. There is both a tabloid sized
full score and also a piano vocal that is letter sized.

As you say this is a complex classical full orchestra score, most
likely scanning won't save you very much time over entering from
scratch, as frustrating as that sounds. Scanning isn't nearly close
to 100% accuracy, so you'll need to check (and quite likely edit)
all the notation and the lyrics may well get screwed up in the scan/
import process. Scanning the current tabloid pages in 2 parts won't
work at all, based on my importing experience (admittedly not much
since it's so frustrating and inaccurate for anything other than
simple music).

Buying Score and learning Score to enter 2/3 of the full score,
compared to entering the whole score into Finale, it seems to me
that first off you will need to know whether Score will run on your
computer. It's a DOS program, isn't it? not all of them will run
anymore, so you'll need to do research. Then you'll need to take
the cost of Score plus the learning curve -- it's quite different
from any of the Windows notation programs, from what I have heard
although I have no experience with it.

My choice, were I in your position, would be to enter the entire
thing from scratch into Finale so that you will have a complete
score which will (knock on wood) be openable in future versions of
Finale should future editing be necessary.

After a bit of searching, I discovered that this process is invoked
when printing from a 32-bit application to a 64-bit driver. So, it
seems the culprit is Vista. However, Finale 2009 is the only
application that gives me this error. And, Finale 2008a prints just
fine to this driver. This suggests Finale 2009 is at least partly to
blame. Has anyone else with a similar setup run across this issue?

Also related, it appears that the compile postscript listing command
is broken in 2009 (on my setup, at least). It uses strange font
references that distiller doesn't know what to do with, and
generates a postscript file that is not plain text, so it is
difficult to examine to see where the problem lies. Does anyone on
the list use the compile postscript listing? It has never worked
properly for me (it sort of works in 2008, but the actual music ends
up displaced off the page with only a small portion visible on the
edge).

When you install Finale on a computer, it gathers information
internally such as the hard-drive brand and size and other
specifications, the CPU model and speed, how much RAM you have
installed and other info, quite possibly including specs from the
video card. From that data, it constructs a number which is unique
to your computer and sends that number to MakeMusic which generates
an answering code and the two are stored on your computer -- they
have to bear a certain relationship to each other or Finale thinks
it's been installed on a different machine.

Noel was right that usually all you have to do is contact MakeMusic
and explain what you're doing and they'll re-allow one of the
installations and you should be all set to get it activated again.

You can't really copy the authorization from one machine to another
(or even one hard drive to another) because they're very hardware
specific and won't work on different hardware.

forgetting I have to do it all again, or delete the measures. OK,
not a big deal, but why? Make the wizard more customizable, it will

While I agree with you on this being a nuisance, I don't find such a

entering into a score started from the wizard would have more than
31 measures.

I do wonder how such a random number was arrived at, though. Why
not 8, since much music is built of 8-measure phrases, or 16 to get
a double-phrase started, or 32 to fit a 32-bar pop song format?

Where did 31 come from as a default?

+4, but it must be wrong, because it sounds horrible. What might I
be doing wrong?

Yes, horns in E, a halfstep lower than today's F horn. But for
Mendelssohn, as for Beethoven and others in the early 19th century,
there was no normal F horn. The hand horns they used were crooked
into a variety of keys, of which F was only one. Mozart seems to
have favored the slightly richer sound of the Eb and D horn. And it
the wedding music for Midsummernight's Dream Mendelssohn use the
brighter G horn. (Not as bright, though, as the A horn in
Beethoven's 7th symphony!)

The rule of thumb is this: The E horn is a minor 6th lower than
concert pitch. Therefore it must be noted in a key a minor 6th
higher, and in notes a minor 6th higher. (I think! I have to re-
figure it out every time the question comes up, and I could well be
incorrect. But that's how you approach it.)
